Without RECP

UNIDO RECP Programme Since the mid-1990s, UNIDO and UNEP have collaborated to foster the global uptake of the RECP concept. Under the flagship RECP Programme, UNIDO and UNEP seek to improve industrial productivity while reducing industry’s dependence on natural resources and diminishing waste and harmful emissions. This increases production efficiency, social enhancement and lowers risks to human health and environment. Today, the RECP Programme has a diverse portfolio, including projects on eco-industrial parks, industrial waste minimization for low carbon production, the transfer of environmentally sound technologies, innovative chemicals management, chemical leasing and water stewardship. The Network for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECPnet) brings together over 70 providers of RECP services on a global level, in order to catalyze the effective and widespread application of RECP in developing and transition countries. RECP

Myanmar National Cleaner Productionand Resource Efficient Services Why RECP? The need to clean-up polluting industries in developing and transition countries has remained a key challenge. To tackle this issue, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) promotesa variety of tools under the principles of resourceefficient and cleaner production (RECP). RECP is the continuous application of a preventive integrated environmental strategy to processes, products and services to reduce social and environmental risks. It addresses: • Productive use of natural resources • Reduction of impacts on the environment • Minimization of risks to people and support

for their development

Why Industries should care For industries the scarcity of resources, such as water, as well as excessive pollution can significantly impact the profitability of specific operations. This can be caused as a result of environmental degradation and the following negative developments: • High and volatile resource prices • Disruption in production due to unreliable supply • Higher insurance and credit costs • Higher maintenance costs of production equipment due to over-consumption and depreciation of machinery • Negative worker‘s health impacts affecting overall production • Rising demand for eco-friendly products • Stringent international standards

With RECP

Another concern for companies reflects the discontent from local communities surrounding the respective plant operations. UNIDO’s RECP approach addresses these challenges bringing substantial benefits, economic, social as well as environmental.

Core Benefits: Environmental and Economic

RECP is highly successful for generating more profit. Because of the implementation of RECP practices companies become more competitive as a result of saved materials and innovative practices.

Through the application of RECP solutions, money can be saved in two ways. Firstly, by converting resources into useful products and services. Secondly by reducing the costs of cleanup, remediation, transport, treatment and disposal associated with wastes and emissions.

RECP benefits include: • Cost reductions for firms, with benefits for consumers • Environmental benefits at the local and global level • Mitigation of price and supply risks for firms • Value creation through industrial symbiosis
