52nd Buccaneer Cup

The sailfish action has been picking up prior to the event. Could it portend great things for the Buc Cup? Possibly another record year of releases? That waits to be seen. We all recognize the rivalry between the live bait fliers and the dead bait trollers. In the past eight years live and dead bait boats have proven they can take the top prize and Calcutta money pretty much on an equal basis. Last year, with the main body of sails still well north of Fort Worth Inlet, in an area where trollers usually prevail, the Miss Annie won the tournament fishing live bait! It will be interesting to see how things stack up this year. Fred, Gary and Courtney wish all of you the best of luck in the 52nd Annual Buccaneer Cup Sailfish Release Tournament and while not everyone can win we will strive to make it a first class event that you will enjoy participating in while benefiting two great organizations.

The Amazing Art of HANK BUFKIN

The fish was realistic in a physiological way, but it was anything but typical. There was something in the medium the artist used that made it glow and exhibit subtle color shifts as you looked at it from different angles, sort of like the way light changes as it penetrates the surface of a shifting sea. It was mesmerizing and from the crowd at the display it was obvious I wasn’t the only person who thought so.

Bufkin is a recently retired police detective who lives along the Gulf Coast of Alabama. He will tell you that he has been blessed with a God given gift, the ability to create artistic representations of what he has seen as a lifelong fisherman, hunter and an avid diver. His love and respect for nature spurs his passion for his work and enables him to express the beauty of the natural This stunning original sailfish done on copper will world as seen be auctioned off at the Buc Cup awards dinner. through his eyes.

“How does he do that,” I asked a lady standing nearby who, it turned out, was Hank Bufkin’s wife and business manager Susan. “Hank uses metal for his canvas, in this piece steel,” she told me. “He starts by etching and texturing the image into the metal to create reflective surfaces and textures before he applied paint.”

Hank combines that deep and abiding love of nature with his critical eye for detail in each one of the stunning pieces he fashions. “My desire is to create threedimensional movement as well as true to life realism and that is why I work primarily on metal.” He has developed his own techniques that require hours of hand manipulating the surface of

His “naked” etchings on copper and brass are stunning, but he also combines etched metal with painstakingly applied acrylics to create full color pieces that dance under different lighting effects. For that reason it is impossible to capture the true beauty of his work with a camera. Shoot it a dozen times from different directions with varying light sources and you get a dozen surprisingly different images, one more striking than the next. His work has to be seen to experience the way it comes to life. Because he utilizes metal for his canvas he applies numerous protective coatings to prevent tarnish and weather damage which means his work can be displayed inside or outside depending on the purchaser’s desires. Expanding his creative expression into new

vistas, Hank recently began crafting custom tables and wall frames of various woods, some finished and others in their natural state, with his metal art imbedded. These pieces are equally at home displayed in a house, a place of business or on yachts of all kinds. Imagine one of his beautiful tables on the mezzanine overlooking the cockpit of your boat or a framed custom commissioned piece hanging in the salon. Hank carefully researches each project so that every aspect is true to the subject at hand and his dedication to detail is described by many of his clients as "living works of art." Hank has created commissioned artwork for business owners, restaurants, national fishing tournaments, memorials for fallen Police Officers, fine art galleries and private collectors. He has numerous corporate clients,

He is happy to discuss ideas with clients and he encourages them to follow the progress of their artwork either in person or through emails and Facebook postings. The first is a 22” X 30” sailfish etched on copper and framed with a retail value of $4800. The second is a surprise and sure to garner a lot of interest from the ladies in attendance at the Awards Banquet, where you will be able to meet Hank and Susan and view other pieces of his work at a mini show.
