In This Issue Of

Rec Rider Magazine

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! I hope the celebrations have left you happy, comfortable, and ready to go. Rec Rider is ready to come out of the gate roaring this year! With winter just technically starting and the next couple months being limited to what outdoor activities we can do, I hope you keep your copies handy to read while looking outside. This issue has good reading in it. We have some racing action from ECEA and TRUPA, the MAMA and District 7 Awards, and all the regular content you expect. January is a hard month; it’s kind of stuck. Out with the old in with the new is good, but what if you liked the old? 2014 was a great year for me and many people I know, but I know lots of others who are going to be happy to see it gone and who are hopeful that 2015 will treat them better. I hope 2014 was great for you and 2015 is even better. 2015 should be a great year for Rec Rider. We plan on being at lots of events, and I hope to meet even more of you all out at them. As usual if you have an event or hear of an event and you want to be sure we have it listed on the events page, don’t hesitate to send me an email to be sure it’s in there. It’s my goal to be sure that everything we can list is on here so you all have it at your fingertips. What could be easier? I love hearing from everyone. And don’t forget to take the survey on our webpage; there’s a $50.00 gift card up for grabs. We are also looking for video submissions from you guys for our YouTube page, so if you have ’em and want to get ’em up on there, go to RecRider.com and submit them for a chance to win a T-shirt. That’s all I’ve got for this month, except to say I hope your holiday season went great and to wish you all the best for the new year!

TRUPA at AIR MX's "Save the Tatas" Race By Regina Swinger

Trike racing groups are becoming more common, and many states have one (or more) or are in the midst of organizing one. Our region’s biggest and best groups met up in New York recently for a breast cancer race and some camaraderie. New York has a race group called NYTRO, New York Trike Racing Outlaws. This group invited TRUPA (Trike Riders United based in PA) to come to one of its events, a breast cancer awareness race called “Save the Tatas,” at Air MX in Delavan, N.Y. This was a motocross race with four classes: Three-Wheeler A Class with 11 racers in that class; Three-Wheeler B Class with eight racers in that class; ThreeWheeler 200 Class with five racers in that class; and a Three-Wheeler Women’s Class with eight ladies racing. Trike racers came from all over to race at this event, not just New York. Racers traveled from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, and Canada. A wide range of racers all met up for this good cause to do what they love, race trikes. Although there is a bond among trike racers, these racers came here to compete and that’s just what they did. This was a two Moto format, with the A Class, B Class, and 200 Class being five laps for each Moto and the Women’s Class being three-lap Motos. These were all very intense races with everyone competing for the win. The A Class had 11 amazing racers: four NYTRO, three TRUPA, Two OTC, (Ohio Trike Crew), and two unaffiliated racers. They raced hard and meant business out on the track; in this class there was no room for a mistake. With every lap being fought hard, it was very intense. The guys were rolling their trikes in the tight turns trying to pass, only to jump back up and get on their trikes and continue fighting through the pack. All in all it was very exciting race to see.

Now for the B Class. There were eight guys at the gate ready to rub tires and eat dirt. This was a very competitive class where even teammates fought it out on the track. There was no point in the race when you knew who was going to take the win. But at the end, TRUPA racers took first and second places in the event. The 200 Class was another great class for the TRUPA team, with the same members who won the B Class taking it again in the 200 Class. TRUPA was on a roll. And this was not a class that was to be taken lightly, with the competition causing one racer in the first Moto to wreck and end up going to the hospital. The competition was intense and all racers were out to win, no questions asked. The Women’s Class was my class, with some good competitive ladies racing against each other. There was Sandra Hall, the owner of Halls Performance Racing on one of her husband’s builds. Halls Performance is known in the sport for its race trikes and 250R builds. Melissa Raposo on her 310R, a new girl to the trike racing world that I’d heard a lot about, was there along with many other girls who were ready to rip it up. In this class, the girls were not playing around either; we were out to win. We were at the gates with fire in our eyes. On the first Moto when that gate dropped we were fighting for that first turn. In the first turn, some of the girls got into rubbing some tires. This caused Melissa to flip her trike and break a finger on her left hand, but this did not stop her from racing. She jumped back up and got seventh in the first Moto and sixth in the second Moto. This was a great weekend for racing, with so many awesome people out there for a great cause. Thank you to NYTRO for inviting us for a weekend of some intense racing and great friendship. We can’t wait for next year!

Mercer Chapter of ATV Traction Christmas Party By Arnie Ylonen

On Dec. 9, the Mercer Chapter of ATV Traction held its annual Christmas party. Instead of a member gift exchange, as is customary, we chose to purchase and donate to the Toys for Tots program. The Toys for Tots program is an effort of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), and its objectives are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas and to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children. It ends up helping the entire community by offering a chance to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from ATV Traction!

This was our first year to have a special guest. This guest was Lance Cpl. Justin Seidner of the USMC. We were very proud to have him as a guest at our event and will hope to have him back again. In front in the picture is our chapter president, Dan Scott, shaking hands with Justin. All totaled, there were 40 members and their guests at the party. New unwrapped toys for all ages were placed in the box, which was to be brought to the Youngstown Air Force Base, where Justin serves. Thank You to all our members and guests who brought gifts and to the U.S. Marine Corps for their unwavering support of our nation as well their care for the children of this nation.

Western PA SxS and ATV Riders By Bobbi Jo Steffey

Belonging to a group of like-minded enthusiasts makes for a great experience both on the trail and the times you are at home wishing you were on the trail. So much knowledge and camaraderie, as well as the playful brand war jokes back and forth, make getting loaded up and ready to hit the trails that much more enjoyable. If you would like to learn about upcoming events, be sure to check out Western PA SXS and ATV Riders on Facebook. We are a diverse group of riders of all ages and walks of life. There are ATVs and SXS’s, both sport and utility. The next Toy Ride was set for Dec. 14. Scrubgrass is definitely on our list of places to ride more often this coming year. We will see you out there. Don’t forget to visit us on Facebook, as well as Stiller Motorsports and all of our sponsors. See you at Scrubgrass! If you would like to sponsor a ride for our group, or our group as a whole, you will be reaching more than 800 members, with that number growing more every day in the western Pennsylvania area. Please contact Bobbi Jo Steffey at bsteffey1@yahoo.com for more information.

When a person first thinks about group riding, the idea that generally follows is a nice, warm, sunny day with ideal temperatures between 68 and 72 degrees. The mud is just perfect, it has just rained so the trails aren’t dusty, and everyone who goes out comes back in one piece. We were invited to a group ride put on by Stiller Motorsports called the annual Toy Ride, and my ideal requirements changed a bit. I’m no fair weather rider, as we ride 52 weeks a year, but to get me out to an organized event in 30 degree weather it had to be special. You see, $20 or a $20 toy got us into this ride, and we can’t argue with a good cause. The toys were going to be given to kids less fortunate, and we got to do what all of us yearn for the minute we offload our trailers back at home the week before. How can a group of people change the lives of so many kids with just $20? Get more than 900 of them to come to the event; that’s how! Our group alone, the Western PA SXS and ATV Riders, came through 100-plus riders strong! From the time we hit the trail until the time the trailer door closed, everyone we spoke with had a blast. Trails were in great shape; Scrubgrass OHV Park is often an overlooked place to ride in our community. Powersport riders usually steer clear of anywhere that has been rutted by Jeeps, but the trails were surprisingly clean. We didn’t come across anything overly difficult, but it was still enough of a challenge that you couldn’t let your guard down. The day started as so many other rides and poker runs do. Everyone was getting geared up, checking their fuel and tires, packing cargo bags, and making sure there were tow straps ready to pull someone in distress. We weren’t 15 minutes into the ride when a 2015 RZR 900S shut off and we couldn’t get it started trailside. Thanks to some recovery work we got it back to the trailer and diagnosed the problem. Back out on the trail, with only a couple minor and a couple not-so-minor mishaps, the day went off without a hitch. At about 1 p.m., our group, the Western PA SXS and ATV Riders, got together for a group photo and our best count was around 88 machines. An amazing turnout for our group’s first official ride!

2014 MAMA Awards Banquet Story and Photos By Melissa Chappell and Chas McHenry

The first weekend of December this year found me in a place I never thought I’d be. I was at the Mid Atlantic Motorcycle Association (MAMA) and District 7 Awards Banquet. I have to say it was impressive walking through the door for the first time and seeing the stage. At first sight I thought that this was either going to be a great night watching people get awards and participating in the excitement, or it was going to drag on forever. I didn’t need to worry about that. The board at MAMA did an outstanding job giving out all the awards and keeping us all entertained. Just the excitement of watching all the riders and their families respond to the winners and interact with each other made me very glad to be there. The racing community is a tightknit community, and everyone seemed to be there to have fun celebrate and look back on a great year of racing. My favorite part was the Special Awards. Not to discount in any way the awards for winning the races, but to me the Memorial Awards, Sportsmanship Awards, and awards for promoting the sport represent an organization that praises not only the ability to race well but also an organization

that teaches respect and consideration for things other than winning. That behavior was well represented by the kids and young adults that make up the body of MAMA. The banquet itself started with an hour of mingling, saying hellos, and signing up for Chinese auctions and various drawings. After that, we sat down and waited to be called for our buffet-style dinner, which was excellent. Then the awards started. Between District 7 and MAMA, I fully expected to be there forever and at some point begging for it to be over, but each award had a different set of winners and the top position of each was able to give a quick thank you or shout out that kept bringing me back to how impressed I was with the devotion of the racers. I can’t speak to racing in general as I have very limited experience with it, but going to this banquet made me wish I had more. I have plans now to buy a dirt bike and go crash it multiple times trying to learn and relive some parts of my youth. Hopefully my wife doesn’t find out about it anytime soon. Thank you to MAMA for inviting me to share this with

Mud Pit Purchasing an ATV

Words by: Stephanie Gehman

Jena and Gage getting ready to ride

This month let’s chat about picking out the right ATV for you. Depending on whom you talk to, the requirements you need to consider when purchasing equipment will vary and opinions on how to pick the right size of vehicle for kids will, too. For our purposes in writing this article, we will be following the recommendations set forth by the state of Pennsylvania (PA), where a good deal of our readership lives and rides. ‘Today’s ATV Rider in Pennsylvania,’ an instructional booklet provided by DCNR (Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) recommends that parents and the child consider the following when determining what equipment is appropriate for the child to ride. • Can you (the child) sit comfortably on the vehicle and reach the controls easily? • Do you have coordination adequate enough for the challenge of riding an ATV? • Do you have good depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to judge distances? • Will you be able to understand the risks involved in riding an ATV and make good decisions to drive responsibly and avoid accidents? As you and your parents are weighing the answers to those questions, make sure to familiarize yourself with the state’s riding laws as well. Pennsylvania has laws in place that affect how and where you can ride an ATV as a youth. Look over these with your parents before you start riding your newly purchased ATV: • No ATV shall be operated without a lighted headlight and taillight from a halfhour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise. • All ATVs must be titled and registered, with the owner receiving one numbered plate. • Registration is to be renewed once every two years. • No one under age 8 shall operate an ATV on state-owned land. • No one between the ages of 8 and 15 may operate an ATV unless on a parent’s land or in possession of a safety training certificate. • No one under age 16 may cross a highway or operate an ATV on designated roads unless in possession of a safety certificate and with an adult 18 or older. • ATV use on any street or highway is prohibited, except to cross and except for roads designated as ATV roads. So, when starting the shopping process for a new ATV, make sure you and you parents keep in mind these recommendations and make a safe and appropriate choice that works for your age, riding experience, and of course your abilities, too. And, as always, be safe and have fun when you’re riding and off-roading! Information for this month’s column was sourced from www.atvsafety.gov/state/pennsylvania.html.

ECEA Sahara Sands Hare Scramble Photos and Story By Joann Hauser

Nathan Dulaney, first place 50cc “13-Year-Old ECEA “Fast Kid” Jake Ross Takes the Overall for Morning Race at Sahara Sands Hare Scramble” I would like to start out by mentioning a very talented 13-year-old boy named Jake Ross from Winchester, Pa. He took the overall win for the morning race at Sahara Sands Hare Scramble, which was hosted by the Pine Barrons Enduro Riders on Oct. 18 and 19. Jake, riding in the School Boy class, won the overall out of the 211 riders that were in the morning race. This is an incredible accomplishment for a 13-year-old rider. He did not just receive the overall on Sunday, but he also raced on Saturday in the Youth class, taking second overall, and first place in his class, 12-13 Super Mini. As the season comes to an end with one race remaining at Blue Diamond, he is currently standing in first place for 12-13 Super Mini, second place overall in Youth, and first overall in School Boy for the year. This young man really knows how to turn on the gas, and I believe that his riding abilities will grow along with him. If he continues to work hard and stick with riding, his achievements will be endless and he will one day be a champion. Congratulations to Jake from the ECEA; you certainly did some spectacular riding out there at Sahara Sands Hare Scramble.

Kyle McDonal, first place overall main

By the end of the morning race, the trails became a little beat up and dried out a little in some places. The flag dropped at 1 p.m. for main event and the AA were the first riders to take off into the trails followed by 134 others. Kyle McDonal was the first rider to come around, with Tegan Robert Temple less than 30 seconds behind, trailed by Michael Medeiros less than a minute behind. Kyle stayed calm and held onto the lead to win the overall. By the last lap, Kyle had a lead of over two minutes on Tegan and a lead of five minutes on the third- place rider. Some other highlights from the two-hour Main at Sahara Sands were Joseph Ferraro from A Open winning second overall and Tegan Robert Temple earning third. Luke Ross won the B class overall by nine minutes, followed by Michael Giovanniello and Anthony Kropp, who was closing in on second place with less than a minute apart.

A couple special highlights from our Fast Kids event on Saturday for outstanding riding: The overall win went to 50CC Nathan Dulaney, with Jaden Palmer in second and Kyle Grenewicz in third. Joesph Rainone won the Pee-Wee class, Julian Wojcik received second, and third went to Gavin The morning event took off at 10 a.m. into the near-perfect trails for Williams. Outstanding riding to all of you who came to support the event. everyone who showed up. For people who were just starting out, this was It was certainly a great race weekend for all, and what an outstanding a perfect event for them. There was something for everyone, ranging from accomplishment for 13-year-old Jake Ross. fast-flowing trails with little technical sections here and there, whoops, Thank you, ECEA, Sahara Sands Sand and Gravel, Eagleswood First Aid wide-open roads, grass track, and even a few motocross sections. The Women’s class in the morning event was filled with excitement as Megan and Fire Department, and Pine Barons Enduro Riders for setting everything Horseman took first place by nearly 10 minutes followed by Leah Reins in up, along with all of the sponsors who help make it happen.
