Many businesses all around the world are encouraged to recycle their unwanted IT equipment. The WEEE directive were created to help with the hardzardous waste. What parts can be recycled? Many different parts of a computer can recycled such as: • The PC system itself because it is filled with a lot of metal. • The monitors. • The servers. Computer extras such as the scanners and the printers will need special particular assistance. For example the actual computer itself can contain rather heavy metals in the boards so they would need to be removed by a professional. What materials are in a PC? There are many materials that make up a computer. In your standard computer you will have: • Plastic: You will find roughly 23% is made up of plastic. • Ferrous Metals: Roughly around 32% • Non – Ferrous Metals: Roughly around 18% • Electric Boards: Roughly 12% • Glass: Roughly 15% Your average computer can also contain up to around 2kg of lead. How do you recycle your computer? There are many ways that you can recycle your computers a few include: The DEFRA (Department For Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) companies should get into contact with your waste contractor and ask for advice because it can vary with each different company. Another way in how you can recycle your computer if you do not own your own company and you just simply want to recycle your computer, is by simply searching on the Internet you can also find that they are a number of local disposal companies that are more than

willing to take on your IT waste. You can find these companies from your local government/council website. Some computer manufacturers will let you send the computer back to them, maufacturers such as Dell and HP offer these services. Dell is the largest company to recycle or take on unwanted or unused computers. When the customer sends an unwanted or unused computer; They split the process up like this: • The usable parts are screened out • All the other parts are sorted for disposal • Computers that are in good condition will be put out for reuse. • The computers in poor condition or that cannot be saved will get broken apart and torn down. Then they will look for any working parts, which they pull out, fix and then place them into the newer computers. Any items that cannot be sold/reused for any purpose or actually recycled will then get burned down to generate as much energy as possible. This method makes sure that very little gets thrown and wasted into landfill sites. The most amazing thing about recycling your computer is that 85% of it can be reused which means a better environment for everyone.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycling Legislation (WEEE) WEEE is a electrical and electronic waste equipment. This essentially covers every thing with a plug or battery, The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment became a law in January 2014. It originally came into light in 2006 called WEEE Regulations 2006. With these new regulations came the need for reusing, recovering, recycling and also the treatment of WEEE. When it became a law it ruled out the regulations. Every year around 2 million tonnes of objects from companies or the household are thrown away in the UK. Large household items such as your fridges, washing machines etc make up around 40% of WEEE but a large is other equipment such as computers. My Thoughts I think that everyone should recycle their computers because over half of the computer gets made into newer models, different parts of the system can be sold forward. They aren’t many if any negative implications of reusing or recycling the computer, it is made up of so many different materials such as aluminium and steel which can be made into things from plastic toys to car parts all from recycling your computer. Very little will end up at a landfill. There is a huge concern over the pollution caused by really hazardous chemicals. Recycling your computer and unwanted IT equipment will take away some of the increasing concern. ShareThis
