To support the Government’s objectives, Carillion Alawi is committed to assisting the Government in implementing its development strategy through its unique way of value engineering. Carillion Alawi were one of the first companies in Oman to recognise the potential of value engineering in building ˝to cost˝. This approach has been expanded to encompass private sector. For example for building the safety barriers at Sultan Qaboos Highway included preparing large number of barrier modules in our yard, manufacturer the barriers and moving them to site between 10pm and 6am. This value engineering solution was much appreciated by our client, Muscat Municipality, which reduced risk, disruption to the street and traffic during their peak hours. Oil & Gas Propjects

Client: Sohar Aluminium Project Manager: Bechtel & Co Lead Consultant: Bechtel & Co Contract Start: Dec 06 Contract Completion: Sept 08 Contract Value: RO 9million

Sohar Aluminium Smelter – Port Concrete Works & Alumina Silos The proposed villa is located in busher to be erected on plots no 176 & 177, Phase 1 comprise a main building of three floors ( a partial basement and two floor above) for a total area of 2500m2, in addition one service building such as drives room, Pool facilities, Guard house, External guest facilities etc, covering an approximate area of 400m2. Sohar Aluminium has the world’s longest single pot line at 1.2km long and is the first smelter in the world to implement Rio Tinto Alcan’s benchmark AP36 smelting technology. This $1.4billion project produces 360,000 tones of aluminium per annum. A key part of the project was the construction of a dedicated port facility within the port of Sohar for receiving raw materials and for exporting primary aluminium. Carillion Alawi were selected through a rigorous process assessing long term commitments to exemplar safety performance, and the ability to

deliver the port facility concrete works to a demanding schedule. This included a range of silos for storing alumina (2x60,000t) petroleum coke (2 x 15,000tonne, 60metres high) and a number of large concrete foundations for conveyors and storage tanks. The methods of construction were technically demanding, with slipforming the 60metre high coke silos with a 1850mm thick transfer slab cast 15metres inside the silo, and jump-forming the 49metre high 42metre diameter post tensioned alumina silos. The engineering highlight of this project was strand jacking 2 x 235 tonne roofs into place once the silo walls were constructed, removing the need for large capacity cranes, and allowing the roof to be installed with a high level of precision and safety. Also of note was the construction of the alumina reclaim system, 6metres below ground level only 250metres from the sea which required extensive dewatering and sheet piling all engineered in house by Carillion Alawi and its overseas associate companies.
