Thoughts on the final stretch in Georgia’s regular season Tori Newman With just three games left, Georgia football will face a series of tough opponents to end its regular season. Coming off of a ranked win over Missouri, the Bulldogs will be challenged consecutively by two more opponents that will likely both be ranked, Ole Miss and Tennessee. As the team continues to work around the injury of tight end Brock Bowers, a more difficult schedule will likely challenge the Bulldogs. But the challenge may prepare Georgia for stronger competition in the SEC championship and postseason to come. The Red & Black asked students around the University of Georgia campus their opinion on Georgia’s final few games and the players that will lead the team into the postseason.

“I think that everyone has been saying that we had a super easy schedule, like cupcake schedule. And so I think that playing a lot of good teams at the end of the season will get the team in the right headspace for facing better opponents. … I hope that we see an angry team, maybe a riled-up team.”
“Our defense and offense is a lot [more] well-built, compared to theirs. … But I do think the plays against Tennessee [last season] really did shape them to perform well.”
“I think it’ll definitely help us, because we tend to play up or down to our competition. So playing up with our competition right before the playoffs will definitely help us in the long run.”
“I think that will prepare them for close games, against Ohio State or Michigan or any team that we might go head to head with, possibly in overtime. So all these SEC opponents are looking to take us down, all the players on those respective teams.”

Hit or (Ole) Miss
Rebels face Bulldogs in Athens after more than a decade Owen Warden For the first time since 2016, Georgia will face Ole Miss when the No. 10 Rebels travel to Athens on Saturday. Georgia has a 32-13-1 all-time record over the Rebels despite not even playing in the same division, as SEC West opponents don’t play the Bulldogs often. Georgia’s last matchup against Ole Miss resulted in a 45-14 Rebels victory in Kirby Smart’s first year as head coach. Since then, a lot has changed for both teams, as current head coach Lane Kiffin took over the Ole Miss program prior to the 2020 season. So far, through almost four seasons, Kiffin has amassed a 24-13 record during his time in Oxford, Mississippi. This will be the first time that Smart and Kiffin, who coached together at Alabama, will face off as head coaches. Smart has said in the past that the two are good friends and text each other often, which has resulted in Kiffin poking fun at the Bulldogs on X, formerly known as Twitter, in years past.
972
Georgia and Ole Miss are averaging a combined 972 yards per game. The Bulldogs are putting up the sixth-most yards per game in the nation, while the Rebels are No. 12 in that category. Kiffin has always been known for his offensive success, and this year is no outlier. This season, Ole Miss’ offense has averaged 479 yards per game, the 12th most in college football, and 39.2 points per game, the 11th most in college football. Georgia, meanwhile, currently sits at sixth in the nation with 493 yards per game, and 10th in points per game with 39.3. Kiffin’s offense is relatively well-balanced in both the run and pass game, as junior quarterback Jaxson Dart and sophomore running back Quinshon Judkins lead the way offensively. Dart had to beat out multiple quarterbacks this offseason to retain his starting spot. Both Walker Howard from
LSU and Spencer Sanders from Oklahoma State — the latter of whom is a former PlayStation Fiesta Bowl Offensive MVP and record holder with the Cowboys — transferred into the program. Despite tough competition, Dart earned the job and has kept rolling since then. Dart has thrown for 2,467 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. His performance hasn’t been flawless, but he’s done enough to keep Ole Miss to only one loss — a 2410 defeat against Alabama. Judkins, who has rushed for 793 yards and 12 touchdowns, is regarded as one of the better backs in the SEC. As a freshman, he was selected to the All-SEC First Team. While he isn’t on the same trajectory as last year, where he ran for 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns, the combination of Judkins and Dart have propelled Ole Miss to a 8-1 record thus far. In the Rebels’ 55-49 win over then-No. 13 LSU, Dart threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns, while Judkins ran for 177 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air. The two helped the Rebels overcome a high-powered Tigers offense. Dart also had help from receivers Jordan Watkins, Tre Harris and Dayton Wade, who all had touchdowns. Harris led the way in the LSU game and leads the team with seven receiving touchdowns and 749 receiving yards. All three receivers have over 500 yards and could prove dangerous on the field Saturday. While Ole Miss’ defense doesn’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of opposing offenses, it’s held up admirably this season. The unit sits right in the middle of all defenses in college football, allowing 22.9 points per game and 365.7 yards per game. Safety Trey Washington leads the way for the Rebels statistically, with 59 tackles and two interceptions. Defensive end Jared Ivey leads the team in sacks at five and a half. The Ole Miss defense totaled 31 sacks, 10 interceptions and eight forced fumbles this year. Georgia has one more interception than Ole Miss, but only has 19 sacks and three forced fumbles, nearly half of Ole Miss’ production in both categories. However, the Bulldogs are ranked ninth in yards allowed per game and sixth in points allowed per game. Georgia’s offense, led by quarterback Carson Beck, is towards the top of the conference. Beck has the ninth most passing yards in college football and the second-most in the SEC. Beck’s 72% completion is sixth in college football and second in the SEC. While the Bulldogs seemingly possess a better passing
offense and overall defense, Ole Miss has the advantage in the run game. There’s a reason both teams are at the top of the SEC and college football as a whole. If both teams play to their potential on Saturday, offensive fireworks could be on display in Athens.
GEORGIA OLE MISS TIMELINE SEPT. 3, Kirby Smart coaches his first game with the University of Georgia. Georgia wins 33-24 2016 over North Carolina. Kirby Smart coaches his first and only game
SEPT. 24, against Ole Miss as a head coach. Georgia 2016 loses 45-14.
JAN. 8, Georgia loses 26-23 to Alabama in the national championship. The Bulldogs ended 2018 Kirby Smart’s second season with a 13-2 record.
SEPT. 26, Lane Kiffin coaches his first game with Ole Miss. The Rebels ended that season with a 2020 5-5 record. JAN. 10, Georgia wins first national championship since the 1980 season. Ole Miss ended the 2022 year 10-3, with a victory in the Outback Bowl. SEPT. 3, Jaxson Dart starts his first game at quarterback for Ole Miss. He threw for 2,974 2022 yards and 20 touchdowns that year, as the Rebels started the season with a 7-0 record.
JAN. 9, Georgia wins their second consecutive national championship. Ole Miss loses four 2023 straight games to end the season, including a loss in the Texas Bowl.
SEPT. 2, Carson Beck starts his first game at 2023 quarterback for Georgia. He’s thrown for
2,716 yards and 16 touchdowns during his 9-0 tenure as the starter.

Points from the press box
Georgia’s undefeated record remains intact largely due to Beck’s performance this season, but that’s not to say it’s been a flawless run for the first year starter. The Bulldogs only put up three points in the first half of their first SEC game against South Carolina, and they only put up 10 points in the first half of their first road matchup against Auburn. Beck and the offense haven’t always rolled through their opponents, but when the lights have been brightest, Beck has delivered.
Beck blossoming in first season under center
It’s never about the numbers. At John James the end of the day, it’s about How does a team recover when the most accomplished quarterwinning. back in program history leaves for the NFL? That was the question head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia football team had to answer entering the 2023 season. Smart made his choice on Aug. 19 when he named Carson Beck as Georgia’s starting quarterback for the season opener against UT Martin. The decision has paid off handsomely for the Bulldogs thus far, as Beck has thrown for 2,716 yards, 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions through his first nine starts. He’s emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC, which Smart credited to the mental side of Beck’s game. “He’s bright,” Smart said. “He understands the game. He’s played a lot of snaps. He’s more experienced than you give him credit for … He’s got all the traits of a guy that can win games with his arm, his mind, and if he has to, his feet. And he’s done a good job of doing that, and continuing to improve is the goal.”
389
Carson Beck threw for a career-high 389 yards and four touchdowns against then-No. 20 Kentucky. For his efforts, he was later named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
C A R S O N B E C K | GEORGIA QUARTERBACK The lights were especially bright against Kentucky, Georgia’s first-ranked opponent of the season. At night, in Sanford Stadium, Beck put on the best performance of his career to this point. Beck threw for a career-high 389 yards and four touchdowns and was later named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Despite the award, Beck said he was just happier with the outcome of the game — a 51-13 thrashing in favor of the reigning national champions. “It’s never about the numbers,” Beck said. “At the end of the day, it’s about winning. Especially at the quarterback position, I think that’s a huge column that you put on the quarterback is how many wins they have, how many losses they have — but ultimately I think our team, at the end of the day, [it] just matters if we get out with a win.” The road only gets harder from here, though. Georgia’s got to take down another ranked opponent in Athens when Ole Miss comes to town. The following week, the team needs to find a way to escape Neyland Stadium with a win over No. 14 Tennessee. And if the Bulldogs manage to make it through that stretch unscathed, they’ll find themselves in the postseason once more, ready to face the best challengers that college football has to offer. Beck’s season is far from over and his toughest tests are still ahead. The prospect of entering that slate without the team’s best offensive weapon may seem daunting, but if Beck’s past performances are any indication, he’ll have the Bulldogs in position to contend no matter who they line up against.

Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins
Georgia could very well be in the middle of Jalon Walker’s breakout season. The Bulldogs deploy the sophomore at both inside and outside linebacker, and they’re starting to see results. His versatility has earned him a role in many of Georgia’s third-down personnel groups, and Walker made arguably the biggest play of his young career against Florida, where he sacked quarterback Graham Mertz for a fumble on a big third down. Walker already has impressive pass-rushing instincts, and in the absence of fellow linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson, he could find himself with even more responsibilities before the season is over.

Jaxson Dart fended off high-profile transfers Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard for Ole Miss’ starting quarterback job this offseason, and so far he’s proving the Rebels and head coach Lane Kiffin right. Dart has thrown for 2,467 yards and 16 touchdowns to four interceptions, and has added 334 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Dart is one of 35 quarterbacks nationally to be added to the Davey O’Brien Award list for 2023, which will be awarded to the country’s best quarterback at the end of the season. He’s had the Ole Miss offense on a roll all season and now he’ll get a crack at the top-scoring defense in the SEC.
Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas
Rara Thomas transferred to Georgia from Mississippi State this offseason and has quickly emerged as one of the team’s top deep threats. It’s been a small sample size, as Thomas has only caught 20 passes for 311 yards and a touchdown, but he’s made some of Georgia’s biggest plays through the air all season. His first and only touchdown of the year was an acrobatic toe-tap in the end zone, and he caught Georgia’s longest pass of the season — a 56-yard bomb against UT Martin. With Brock Bowers still out, Thomas’ athleticism and ability to win one-on-one matchups on the outside could end up being huge for the Bulldogs’ offense.

Quinshon Judkins has been the busiest running back in the SEC this season. The sophomore leads the conference in rushing attempts with 169 and is fourth in yards with 793. Judkins rebounded from a shaky start to the season, as he’s rushed for over 120 yards in three of his last five games. He’s a punishing runner who shoulders a massive workload for the Rebels, and the type of back who only gets better as the game continues. Ole Miss has been good at wearing opponents down on the ground this season, and Georgia must keep Judkins in check to avoid a similar fate.
Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker

Ole Miss safety Trey Washington Veteran safety Trey Washington has been the Rebels’ go-to tackler all season. He leads the team in tackles with 59, alongside two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He’s been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, for the first time following 10 tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble against Georgia Tech, and for the second time after two interceptions against Vanderbilt. Washington is stellar against the run and Georgia will need to know where he is on the field before every snap to keep him from getting into the backfield.
Georgia defensive lineman Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins has dealt with a foot injury all season, but made his return in a big way against Florida. In his first action since the season opener, Ingram-Dawkins came up with a huge strip-sack on Mertz that set up a Georgia touchdown on the ensuing possession. His return is a welcoming sign for a Georgia defensive front that has struggled more so this season than in the past. As he continues to get healthy, Ingram-Dawkins could become a real disruptor on Georgia’s defensive line.

Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey (84) talks to a teammate during a game against UAB at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. P H O T O / L A N E Y M A R T I N
‘Heart of a warrior’
Even with doubt about ever making an impact, McConkey remained patient until he received his chance. “I’ve always believed in my ability, known what I can do, but they gave me the opportunity and I feel like I’m doing all I can to make the best of it,” McConkey said in 2021. “It definitely is an awesome experience and something I’ve always dreamed of. It really is great to go out there and help out my teammates and do all I can do.” In 2022, the redshirt junior led Georgia’s wide receivers in receiving yards at 762 and seven touchdowns. Despite two years of success, McConkey hadn’t been able to reach higher heights this season due to a back injury that kept him out for a significant portion of the year. Despite this setback, McConkey is still fourth on the team with 337 receiving yards and a touchdown — alongside a 135-yard performance against Florida this season. While McConkey still showed that he can play at a high level, his team-first philosophy hasn’t changed over the years. “It definitely does feel good anytime you can make plays,” McConkey said. “But coach [Kirby] Smart preaches mission, team, need — so I’m last. Winning the game’s first, team’s next, I’m at the bottom. The whole team bought in on that and that’s what makes us special.” The injury setback wasn’t the only challenge McConkey faced in his young football career. While already a low-rated prospect, McConkey didn’t have many offers from teams, despite being on the path to winning the Georgia High School Association’s AAA Offensive Player of the Year. The only other high-profile offer McConkey had was from Vanderbilt, but then Smart and the Bulldogs gave him an offer on Jan. 20, 2020 — four years to the day McConkey lost his grandfather. McConkey has written “1-20-16” on his towel before every game to honor his grandfather. Aside from his on-the-field ability, McConkey has been active in giving back to the Athens community. From his work with Camp Rainbow, Read Across America and other programs, McConkey’s work in the community has earned him several honors. Among them, he was named a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is “given annually to an exceptional football student-athlete in the community and classroom.” McConkey was also named to the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. Either on or off the field, McConkey has been a tremendous asset to the Bulldogs as a team. Even if he heads off to the NFL next season, according to Smart, McConkey will always embody what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog. “I saw the heart of a warrior,” Smart said in 2021. “I said I want this guy on my team. Any player on our team will tell you Ladd McConkey will outwork any guy out there. He is everything right about college football.”
McConkey’s rise to the top of Georgia’s wide receiver unit Owen Warden It was never going to be easy for a player like Ladd McConkey. The Chatsworth, Georgia, commit was one of Georgia’s lowest-rated players in the 2020 class, and the former North Murray High School wide receiver, quarterback and defensive back had a long road to seeing the field in Athens. However, after one redshirt season, the 6-foot, 185-pound receiver proved what he could do in 2021. McConkey finished third on the team in receiving by the end of the year. But by the Florida game that season, he was the leading wide receiver on the team after not being selected to travel with the team during his true freshman season.
Any player on our team will tell you Ladd McConkey will outwork any guy out there. He is everything right about college football. K I RBY SMART | GEORGIA HEAD COACH

Former colleagues meet again Head coaches Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin face off Samuel Higgs It wasn’t too long ago when Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin were coordinators for Alabama during the Crimson Tide’s 2015 national championship season. Both coordinators became heavily sought-after candidates for head coaching jobs and will now face off for the first time as head coaches. “They’ve got a great team,” Smart said after Georgia’s 30-21 win over Missouri this past Saturday. “Lot of respect for what Lane’s done and built there. They’ve got a tremendous offensive line, they’re playing good defense [and] it’s going to be a hell of a matchup, because they’ve got a really good football team.” Smart was hired by Georgia following the 2015 season to succeed previous Georgia head coach Mark Richt. Smart didn’t take long to get rolling in Athens, as he took the team from 8-5 to 13-2 and made the College Football Playoff in his second head coaching season. Since then, Smart’s led Georgia to the top of the SEC East nearly every year since 2017 and brought home Georgia’s first national title in 41 years in 2021. He followed it up with an undefeated 15-0 season in 2022 to defend the title for the Bulldogs. Georgia is currently ranked No. 1 in the country according to the Associated Press rankings and is the last unbeaten team in the SEC. The Bulldogs are in prime position for another College Football Playoff appearance and a chance to three-peat as national champions.
Following Kiffin’s departure from Alabama, the former offensive coordinator became the head coach at Florida Atlantic. In his three years there, Kiffin posted two double-digit winning seasons, two bowl-game victories and a record of 26-13.
I have a lot of respect for Lane. ... I appreciate the friendship that we’ve been able to maintain and that he doesn’t let recruiting come between us. K I R B Y S MA R T | GEORGIA HEAD COACH
Kiffin returned to the SEC before the 2020 season when he took the head coaching job at Ole Miss. Kiffin helped restore the program to national relevance, as the Rebels never won more than six games in a season under predecessor Matt Luke. In Kiffin’s first year with the program, he faced a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but still took
the team to an Outback Bowl win over Indiana. In the following seasons, Ole Miss has built itself up as a viable threat in the SEC. In his second season, he led the team to a 10-3 record, finished behind Alabama in the SEC West and ranked as the No. 11 team in college football. After a hot start in 2022, Ole Miss finished a disappointing 8-5, dropping its last four games. In 2023, the Rebels are back in the thick of it with a 8-1 record and a No. 10 spot in the College Football Playoff poll. Their lone loss of the season came on the road against Alabama to both Smart and Kiffin’s old boss, Nick Saban. However, since that Week 4 loss, the Rebels have bounced back and won their past four games as they sit behind the Crimson Tide in the SEC West. Ole Miss will be the highest-ranked opponent that Georgia has faced thus far in the season. The Bulldogs will have the home field advantage as the Rebels travel to Athens to play between the hedges. Kiffin has turned heads at Ole Miss so far, and has a chance for his biggest win yet if the Rebels pull off the upset. Either way, the two friends will clash in a big game with big implications for both sides. “I have a lot of respect for Lane,” Smart said at the 2023 SEC Media Days. “It’s a friendship. We worked together, we worked hard together. We had the same goal and I thought he did a tremendous job at Alabama — he made my job easier because we scored a lot of points. I appreciate the friendship that we’ve been able to maintain and that he doesn’t let recruiting come between us, it’s bigger than that.”
