Summer Bucket List

Spending the summer in Athens is a special treat, especially for kids. From the Georgia Museum of Art, to Bear Hollow Zoo to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Athens provides a plethora of fun things to do. If you’re thinking of creating a bucket list, here are some places to help you get started.

State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Hot summer days call for outside activities. While you’re in town, stop by the Botanical Gardens and visit their numerous exhibits. During the summer, it offers an array of events such as the Sunflower Concert Series. Make sure to also visit the Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden. Built in 2019, it is the perfect place for kids and their families alike.

Bear Hollow Zoo

One other option includes visiting Bear Hollow Zoo to see some of the animals housed there. Bear Hollow is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bear Hollow houses non-releasable wildlife including black bears, river otters, alligators and more. Stop by during business hours and observe the intriguing animals they have.

Georgia Museum of Art

The Georgia Museum of Art offers numerous programs for kids during the summer. The museum’s Art Adventures program is a free summer program from June 5 to July 24. Inspired by the unique ways in which visitors can experience art using the five senses, each 90-minute session includes interactive gallery tours, games and an art activity. The museum is also holding Family Day on July 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. On Family Day, families can explore the galleries with interactive games and make their own takehome art project.

Kaitlyn Loyd, the assistant curator of education at GMOA, hopes kids will visit her favorite exhibit, the Le -

titia and Rowland Radford Gallery of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings.

“Spending time at the museum is a great way to beat the heat and have a fun, educational experience with loved ones,” Loyd said in an email.

Athens Clarke County Library

If you are more introverted and want a no-cost option, a great summer activity is going to the Athens-Clarke County Library for a day of reading. Additionally, the Athens-Clarke County Library provides an activity nearly every day of the summer such as storytimes, magic shows, crafting parties, Lego workshops, and movie nights.

Rook & Pawn

If you are looking for something a little more relaxing, visit the Rook & Pawn board game cafe. One of the first board game cafes in the southeastern U.S., according to its website, Rook & Pawn provides a cozy environment where you can play a variety of games such as Jungle Speed, Spot It! and Uno. Food and beverages are

also available to pur-
time in the cafe. This is a great option to consider if you’re a lover of games and looking for a fun summer hangout spot. Collin Webb, the general manager at the Rook & Pawn, graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in physics and has been at the cafe for eight years. As a board game enthusiast and a people person, Webb had endless praise for the Rook & Pawn. “I’m a big board game person, so having around 1,000 board games at my disposal, I can have fun whenever I want to. Those are two just like massive, massive reasons that I love this place,” Webb said. Whether you go biking, to the art museum or the board game cafe, there are numerous options to explore this summer. Treehouse Kid & Craft

Encouraging creativity during playtime

Every toy, no matter how big or small, simple or complex, can be an outlet for kids to flex their imagination and wonder. Toy stores help facilitate this outlet, giving kids a physical space to express this creativity in an interactive and engaging way.

By providing a wide collection of toys, crafts and activities, toy stores offer children opportunities to explore new interests, develop their skills and immerse themselves in a space where they can be creative. This hands-on environment encourages learning and growth in a fun, supportive setting.

Kristen Bach, self-described “chaos creator” and founder of Treehouse Kid & Craft located on 585 Barber Street, believes in the importance of having toy stores like hers.

“I think our store also is very hands-on,” Bach said. “Being able to touch things that are available [to you] and just the space and community, I feel like that hopefully encourages play.” According to Bach, Treehouse’s mission is to provide kids and the local community with ethically made and quality toys that do not require batteries or electronics but still promote creative uses of the imagination and critical thinking.

Bella Martin, a cashier at Treehouse Kid & Craft and a recent graduate of Clarke Central High School, explains why this focus on sensory play without the distractions of screens is important.

“Just getting them to take some time away and actually involve their hands with the environment or outside is so important because it gets them to be present,” Martin said. “Which is really important for everyone to do, just be more present in life.” Treehouse strives to take every avenue to encourage creativity and wonder in children. The toy store is constantly adding new additions to its shop, making sure its “kids at heart” attitude stays in check.

“We’re

ences with new materials, as well as “Treathouse,” a candy store and allergy-free ice cream shop. The ice cream shop, which opened in October of last year, has oat milk and dairy-free, fruit soft serve, free of the top 10 allergens with a collection of specialty cones, toppings and more.

Treehouse also holds classes, summer camps and birthday parties designed to foster exploration and embrace the process of creation. Their creativity classes host a wide array of activities, such as Crafterday Saturdays, Crafty Maker Mondays, Craft Inc. Kid Business and Storytime with Mr. Doodles.

“We’re on week three of summer camp and it’s pretty magical, just seeing what everybody creates,” Bach said. “[They’re] using different materials throughout the week that introduce them to new experiences and ways to make art. I think everybody has a good time.”

Five-year-old Ayla Ward, a recent pre-school graduate, participated in Treehouse’s Busy Town Camp and is a fan of the local toy store.

“It’s a very fun thing, it has ice cream and also a lot of toys,” Ward said.

Trendy Toys From Jellycats to craft kits, there are some toys that kids just can’t get enough of at Treehouse.

The hot ticket item on some kid’s wish list seems to be the inexplicably soft Jellycats. Jellycat offers a wide range of animals, including classic teddy bears, bunnies and more exotic creatures like axolotls, dragons and unicorns. Jellycat toys are known for their cuddly nature and simple designs.

We’re constantly adding new things like a rainbow ceiling that I hope creates curiosity and wonder and just beauty that they will, in turn, feel inspired by.

KRISTEN BACH | FOUNDER OF TREEHOUSE

Ward expressed her love of Jellycats, even saying she got one for Easter.

Treehouse holds a wide variety of these Jellycats, specifically mentioning Ricky Rain Frog being a standout popular among all ages.

Jellycat has since released a summer collection with Ricky Rain Frog wearing a rubber ducky innertube.

Jellycats come in many different sizes, including small, medium and large versions of some of their classic stuffed animals.

“The smaller ones sell better because they can buy them with their own money,” Bach said.

Maileg Mice are miniature mice that are dressed in detailed, vintage-inspired clothing. Each mouse is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, from their tiny outfits to their cozy accessories. Each mouse comes in a custom matchbox and the company sells houses for your mice to live in. These mice inspire imaginative play and storytelling, allowing children to create miniature worlds and adventures.

Calico Critters, similar to Maileg Mice, are another line of miniature animal figurines that have captured the attention of many. Originating from Japan, they feature a wide variety of animal characters, including rabbits, cats, bears and more, each with detailed outfits and accessories. The several animal figures Treehouse has to offer encourage kids to imagine themselves in everyday situations, with many kids deciding to build houses for these critters.

Another popular toy at Treehouse are MAGNA-TILES, consisting of colorful, magnetic building tiles that allow children to create various two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures. Each tile has magnets along its edges, enabling them to snap together easily and be made into many unique shapes and structures.

Treehouse supplies a 15, 32 and 100-piece set of MAGNA-TILES, the bigger sets allowing for bigger structures and more possibilities of creation. These colorful magnet toys provide kids with a way to be creative in multiple dimensions.

According to Bach, miniature animal figurines like Maileg Mice and Calico Critters have also been popular and have “reinvented the doll-house.”

“We’ve seen all sorts of amazing houses that kids have made,” Bach said. ”Parents always send us pictures of how their kid has played with what they’ve gotten here.”

For Ward, her interest lies in toys that focus on creating art, pointing out Kipod’s “CreaTV” where kids can draw movie scripts and become their own movie directors. Additionally, Treehouse Kid & Craft has plenty of

Pelican’s SnoBalls flavors to help you beat the heat

As the summer gets hotter and we’re all outside more, we need ways to beat the heat. What’s a better way to cool off than with a snow cone?

Pelican’s SnoBalls offers more than 100 flavors and a variety of toppings to satisfy any and all snow cone preferences. Whether you like fruity, sweet or sour, there’s a combination for you.

With sizes ranging from kiddie to large, you can eat as little or as much as you would like. But beware: you should try to finish before it melts in the sun!

On top of its wide selection of flavors and toppings, Pelican’s also offers seven signature SnoBalls, some with animal gummies included, each with their own theme. These cute cones are picture-perfect for this summer. We chose four of the signature SnoBalls to try, based off of different animals.

Shark Attack

A vibrant blue and red, the shark attack is a mix of the flavors sour tsunami and tiger’s blood. For those who like sour flavors, this mouth-puckering combination does the trick even without the addition of Pelican’s sour spray topping. As you eat this snow cone, you’ll uncover two blue shark gummies swimming in the ice. This SnoBall will leave you with a blue tongue and a full stomach.

Rating: 4/5

Butterfly Kiss

This pastel pink and yellow snow cone is a fitting summer pick with its butterfly theme. With the flavors birthday cake and cotton candy, this combination is great to satisfy your sweet tooth. There are two pink butterfly gummies in this signature SnoBall, which are slightly sour to balance out the sweetness of the snow cone.

Rating: 3.5/5

Frogger

If you like a lighter flavor combination, this snow cone is for you. This yellow and blue signature SnoBall combines pineapple and polar punch, which is a light blue raspberry flavor. There’s one large frog gummy in the middle that adds a nice touch to the tropical taste. As it melts while you eat it, the yellow and blue combine into a frog-like green.

Rating: 3/5

Dinosaur

This orange-and-sour-grape flavored snow cone hits you immediately with its grape flavor. It is less sour than the Shark Attack SnoBall, so if you like a more sour flavor, this snow cone would pair well with Pelican’s sour spray topping. The large dinosaur gummy adds even more sour flavor. The orange and purple color combination melts into a dark green reptilian color perfect for a dinosaur.

Pickleball Palooza

The new sport taking Athens by storm

In recent years, a new sport has swept across playgrounds, parks and school gyms capturing the hearts of kids and parents alike.

Pickleball, a unique blend of tennis, badminton and pingpong, is quickly becoming a favorite hobby for children in the Classic City. With its easy-to-learn rules and emphasis on fun, pickleball is a way for kids to stay active and offers numerous benefits that extend far beyond the court.

One of the most significant advantages of pickleball is its accessibility. The sport is designed to be easy to pick up, making it ideal for children of all ages and skill levels. The smaller court size and lighter paddles mean that even younger kids can have the chance to play without feeling overwhelmed.

“I really like the paddles because they are hard, unlike tennis rackets, and are easy to use,” Zemp Boley, a 10-yearold Barrow Elementary School student said. Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services has been at the forefront of promoting pickleball among local youth. It has introduced pickleball programs in various community centers and parks, ensuring that children have numerous opportunities to engage in the sport. Southeast Clarke Park and Lay Park facilities have especially become hotspots for young pickleball enthusiasts.

“I like playing with my friends, and I learned about it from a camp where we learned to play at,” Calhoun Boley, Zemp Boley’s younger brother, said.

My favorite part about pickleball is probably beating my younger brother Matthew or my family.
