Rides to the polls
All things transportation on Election Day

Need a ride to the polls? There are multiple options to help Athens voters get to the polls this year.
The Peoples’ Agenda is providing rides to the polls for voters that need it. Their website, https://economicjusticecoalition.org/voter-guide/get-a-ride-to-vote/, includes a form that voters should fill out early in order to secure a ride. The form includes a spot for voters to indicate if they have disabilities or other needs. Individuals can also volunteer to be a driver. This is an Atlanta-based program that works throughout the state. Athens-Clarke County bus systems will be running as usual on Election Day. Wheels of Hope offers rides year-round to individuals who are disabled, visually impaired or otherwise unable to drive because of health reasons. This Athens-based program includes an application process to receive services. Drivers will stay with clients, so they don’t have to worry about being dropped off and picked up again. There is no charge for the services.

As Nov. 5 approaches, voter guides can provide policy information on each candidate, explaining the laws or issues that appear on local and state ballots for voters of that jurisdiction to decide. Voters can find their guide by entering their home address at https://www.ballotready.org/. Voters can print out and annotate a sample ballot to bring to the polls on Election Day, which can be downloaded from their state’s election site.
President of the United States
Former President Donald J. Trump, the Republican candidate, was in office from 2016-2020. His running mate, JD Vance has served as a U.S. Senator for Ohio since 2023. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, has been in office since 2021. Her running mate, Tim Walz, has served as governor of Minnesota since 2019. Chase R. Oliver, the Libertarian candidate, ran for Georgia’s 5th congressional district in 2020 and competed against Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock for U.S. Senate in 2022. His running mate, Mike ter Maat, is a former economist and retired police officer.
Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, ran in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections and is currently an internal medicine doctor. Her running mate, Butch Ware, is an activist who teaches history, Black studies and Islamic studies at UC Santa-Barbara.
Claudia de la Cruz, an independent candidate, is an activist, community organizer and theologian. Her running mate, Karina Garcia, is an activist, educator and community organizer. They are running under the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Cornel West, another independent candidate, is the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at Union Theological Seminary. His running mate, Melina Abdullah, is a professor of Pan-African Studies at Cal State LA’s College of Ethnic Studies and the co-founder of Black Lives Matter. She is the first Muslim to run for the vice-presidency.
U.S. House of Representatives - District 10
The U.S. is divided into 435 congressional districts. Mike Collins has been the congressman of Georgia’s 10th congressional district, which represents Athens-Clarke County, since 2023. Collins, the incumbent Republican candidate, is running against democratic candidate Alexandra “Lexy” Doherty.
Georgia Senate and House
Two Georgia senate seats are up for election in Districts 46 and 47.
Bill Cowsert has been the state senator for Georgia’s 46th district since 2007. The incumbent Republican candidate, Cowsert, is running against democratic candidate, Gareth Fenley.
Frank Ginn has been the state senator for Georgia’s 47th district since 2011. The incumbent Republican candidate, Ginn, is running against democrat, Conolus Scott Jr.

Houston Gaines has been the representative of Georgia’s 120th district since 2023. The incumbent Republican candidate, Gaines, is running against democratic candidate, Andrew Ferguson.
Marcus A. Wiedower has been the representative of Georgia’s 121st district since 2023. The incumbent Republican candidate, Wiedower, is running against democratic candidate, Eric Martin Gisler.
Spencer Frye has been the representative of Georgia’s 122nd district since 2023. The incumbent democratic candidate, Frye, is running unopposed.
Trey Rhodes has been the representative of Georgia’s 124th district since 2023. The incumbent Republican candidate, Rhodes, is running against democratic candidate Melanie M. Miller.
District Attorney Western Judicial Circuit
The District Attorney is the chief legal representative of the district. Georgia’s Western circuit includes both Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties. Deborah Gonzalez has been serving Athens-Clarke and Oconee County as DA since 2020. Independent candidate Kalki Yalamanchilli is running against Gonzalez.
Unopposed local elections
The Clerk of Superior Courts keeps the official record of all civil and criminal actions filed in each court and is the official custodian for all land records. Elisa Zarate has been Athens-Clarke County’s Clerk of Superior Court since 2023.
The county sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county and is responsible for enforcing laws. John Q. Williams has been the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff since 2021.
The county tax commissioner is responsible for overseeing the tax process, including billing, collecting, processing and distributing taxes. The Democratic candidate is JP Lemay.
The county coroner investigates the cause and manner of death of a citizen through completing test results, performing autopsies and documenting evidence. The Democratic candidate is Michael Eberhart.
Proposed constitutional amendments
Georgians will vote on House Resolution No. 1022, a statewide local-option homestead exemption from ad valorem taxes. Essentially, this would be a type of tax break for homeowners.
House Resolution No. 598 asks voters if the state should create a separate tax court. A tax court would operate like superior courts do but instead take on cases involving tax matters. Tax court judges would be appointed by the governor with approval from the Georgia Senate and House judiciary committees and serve four year terms.
Statewide referendum question
Georgians will vote on approval of increasing the personal property tax exemption from $7,500 to $20,000. Personal property may include furniture, machinery or other property used in a business as well as individually or corporation owned aircrafts and boats.
Voters can bring notes, a voter’s guide or a sample ballot into the voting booth. Some polling places restrict cell phone use, so bring paper copies of anything you want with you.
