Temporary Street Art Installation Theme A contemporary response to the Chapel Ash area - mixing nostalgia with conversation fragments. Elements • The ‘regular’ - made of Black Country Bugles, black Posca traced from photograph - monotone • The carpet - despite recent refurbishments and physical changes to the pub, the carpet remained the same - pattern created using bold origami colours, traced from photograph • A hand / pint glass spilling over - made of Grazia and Stylist magazines & black Posca - with bold origami flowing into the carpet and connecting to the words coming from the regular’s mouth • Origami connecting all sections - creating the word ‘Spill’ using negative space

Process • Initial visits to pub - chat with regulars • Reflections on experience of working there 11 years ago • Create plan for wall • Selection of materials • Creation of over 500 pieces of origami • Draw individual elements • Enlarge individual elements • Using wheatpaste, installation of individual elements • Installation of origami • Creation of additional origami pieces to ‘top up’ the installation across the duration of the weekend • Additional hand-written text elements throughout the duration of the festival

Feedback from passers-by
1. A group of young people shouted at us from the other side of the road 'Good job!' and stuck their thumbs up as they walked past. 2. A tiny little girl screamed 'SO PRETTY!!!!!' with her mum when she saw the origami. 3. An older man who'd come from the pub came and talked at length about how it brightened up the street and was significantly more pleasing to look at than the plain old hoardings that had been up for years now. 4. A visitor from 'up north' said 'if it'd
been spraypaint then it would just have been graffiti - but THIS is art!' 5. A much older couple told us 'there'll always be people who don't like what you're doing, but we think it looks great!' 6. Two Jamaican guys were very curious about the piece, which led on to conversation about the festival as a whole. 7. Some of the other regulars in the pub came over to snap a photo of the regular we'd drawn - they all recognised him!
