A NEW SCHOOL YEAR APPROACHES Thank you for being among our very first readers! We are so excited to bring the first edition of this learning support guide to you and your family. This first issue is full of useful information about literacy, education, books and new stories. It is my hope that your child becomes a better reader while being a part of the Red Apple Reading community!

Although no longer teaching in the classroom, I get this same sort of feeling when creating and finalizing new content for Red Apple Reading. BACK TO SCHOOL The beginning of a new school year can be a hectic time, but with a little preparation you can make the transition less stressful and even a little fun! Here are a few tips for making sure you and your children are ready to start the year.
TALK... Many kids are a little nervous about starting a new grade.
clothes are for playing! However, you might want to make sure your little one wears something a little bit nicer for school.
Make sure you take some time to ask about how your child feels about the upcoming year and let him ask some questions. A short talk could go a long way in easing his anxiety.
Make sure all of her clothes fit and follow the school dress code. Some children like to buy a special backto-school outfit for the beginning of the year.
CLOTHES During the summer, it’s easy to ignore the holes and stains on your child’s play clothes. After all, play

This can be a good way to get them excited about their first day, and the new clothes can, of course, be worn other days of the year.
SUPPLIES Now is the perfect time to buy school supplies. Many stores mark down prices for school items in preparation for the upcoming school year. Your school probably handed out supply lists at the end of the previous year or posted the lists on its website. If not, you can contact your school office to request one. Some schools require binders and folders to be a certain color, but if yours doesn’t, ask your little one

if there’s a certain color or design they prefer. This can also make your kid more eager for the start of school.
PLAN About this time of year you’ll start getting information about orientations, parent meetings, school start and end times, bus or car rider instructions, and other housekeeping items. Be certain to write everything down and
organize the information so it doesn’t get overwhelming.
LUNCH Whether your children take their own lunch to school or buy it from the cafeteria, make sure they’re prepared. If they buy their lunch, be certain they have money in their account or send money to school with them. If your child brings their lunch, be aware of what foods aren’t allowed in the
school. Many schools ban nuts and other foods due to allergies.
BEDTIME Your kids’ bedtime may have become nonexistent during the summer when they could sleep in; but now that they have to be up early for school, it’s time to get back on schedule. Be sure to start enforcing regular bedtimes at least a week before school starts to give them time to adjust.
WHILE THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR CAN BE HECTIC, WITH A LITTLE EFFORT YOU CAN GREATLY REDUCE BACK-TO-SCHOOL STRESS. BEGIN PLANNING NOW AND YOUR CHILD WILL START THE YEAR WITH A SMILE!

Actions speak louder than words! If your child sees you reading, whether it’s a book or a magazine, he’ll likely follow your example.

MAKE TIME
Schedule a regular reading time. Before naptime or bedtime are good times to set aside for dedicated reading. Add some weekly time for Red Apple Reading too!

READ ALOUD
Reading aloud to your child is a great way to introduce books to her. Remember, independent readers still like to be read to as well, so don’t leave them out!

PRACTICE SIGHT WORDS
Sight words are words commonly found in texts, therefore, your child needs to know them just by looking at them. Red Apple Reading teaches 250 sight words in levels B and C! Try using the reading program or some fun sight word games to practice! 5

MAKE IT FUN
Younger children especially love playing with letter magnets and other letter manipulatives. You could also use lettershaped cookie cutters to make words out of Play Doh. Find links to phonics games here.

VISIT THE LIBRARY
You can’t read without books! Not only is the library a great place to find interesting books, but many libraries also have fun reading programs and activities that promote literacy.

CONTEXT
Teach your child how to use context. Even if your child doesn’t know a word, she can still use context clues to discover the word’s meaning. Red Apple Reading level C lesson 64 teaches this important concept.

LITERACY TIME! Alphabet Books Take a piece of paper and write each letter of the alphabet down one side (use the back or another piece of paper as needed.) Work with your child over the next several days (or weeks) to identify a book title for each letter of the alphabet. For example, when you read a book (e.g. Green Eggs and Ham), help your child write the title next to the letter G on your chart. Be sure to read all 26 books as you identify the titles!
Build Your Own Book Encourage your child to write a story of his or her own, with inspiration from favorite stories. Help your child form ideas for the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Help your child write the words as needed. Ask your child to draw pictures to go with the story. You can help your child type the story and print it out as well. Then staple it together to make a book. Make sure you write the title and the author/illustrator’s name on the cover.

Silly Story Mix Up
Trip To A Library
Ask your child to choose a favorite book. Read the story together. Then ask your child to tell an alternate ending to the story. Ask your child questions about the characters. For example, you might say, “How would the book be different if the main character was a boy/girl, a cat/dog or a monster? What do you think would happen if the setting of the story was a castle/a boat/an island/a cloud? How would that change the story?� Encourage your child to be creative and tell a new, changed version of the story.
Take your child to the library and enjoy a day of reading new books. If your child does not have a library card, sign your child up for one. Allow your child to check out a few books. Be sure to look for notices about library book sales and take advantage of purchasing inexpensive books. Alternatively, visit a thrift store, a garage sale, or a half-priced book store and allow your child to pick out a few books to purchase at a super cheap price.
