A SPOOKY GOOD TIME My daughters are in college now and too old for trickor-treating, but they still love to come over before or on Halloween to carve pumpkins, roast the seeds, bake treats, and watch our favorite spooky movies from when they were younger, including several Scooby Doo movies. We also had some favorite picture books from this time of year, including The House that Drac Built, Boogie Bones, and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.
Whether you are celebrating this occasion or not, we hope you enjoy the fall temperatures - which are hopefully getting cooler! – and take the time to enjoy reading with your children regularly. Don’t forget to also keep an eye out for the little ghosts and goblins in the neighborhood on the big night!

SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT READERS After your children become independent readers, it’s easy to let regular reading time slip. However, simply being able to read doesn’t necessarily imply complete literacy. It is important to continue encouraging your children to read even as they get older in order to increase vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Here are a few suggestions for how to do this.
Show Interest
Keep Reading Together Even if your child can read on her own, it’s still a good idea to read with her. There are a couple of ways you can do this. One is reading to your child just like you did when she couldn’t read on her own. Older kids still enjoy this quality time with their parents! Another way to do this is to have your child read to you. This option is easy to fit into your schedule because you can do it while folding laundry or other simple tasks that don’t require too much focus. Just make sure to let your child know you’re paying attention if you choose to multitask!

If you notice your kiddo reading a book, ask him about it. Many children enjoy talking about their favorite book or book series. Ask questions about his favorite parts and characters. You could even read the book yourself and discuss it together. Even if it isn’t your favorite genre, it can be very encouraging if you show you care about his interests.

Provide Reading Material Make sure there are books available for your children to enjoy. This could mean regular library trips, but the library may not have the particular book your kid wants. If your child shows genuine interest in a series or author, look out for those books in thrift stores or on sale at a bookstore. Also keep in mind digital copies of books, which are often cheaper than physical copies. Books make great gifts too!
Set Goals This step is important, especially if your kiddo’s school does not require a certain amount of at-home reading. If your child already reads on her own for school credit, encourage her to keep up the good work and provide your own small incentive for reading, such as a favorite snack. If her school does not require supplementary reading, set a goal for a certain amount of time or pages each week and reward her for reaching these goals. The more time your older children spend reading, the better they will become at reading and writing. Make sure you continue supporting your independent readers and make reading a priority. Although the process may require a bit of extra effort, it will pay off immensely in the long run!
