TOP 3 BEAUTY TIPS THIS SUMMER

1

Stay Moisturised - Moisturising is a must to help protect your skin all year round. Choose a moisturiser with SPF protection to protect against those harmful rays.

2

Go Waterproof – Mascara can be problematic in the summer with heat causing us to sweat more and that can cause mascara to run. Try a waterproof mascara this summer to keep that clean and fresh look.

3

Be Colourful – Summer is all about bright colours so don’t be afraid to wear some bold and fresh colours. Why not try out a coral lipstick or add some pink or blue eye shadow?

NEW RIG TAKES STUDENTS TO THE

DIZZY HEIGHTS OF THEIR FUTURE CAREER If you have visited the College recently you might have noticed a new addition to the grounds. The College now has a 30foot outdoor industrial training rig. Created to replicate the demands of working in an industrial environment, the facility will support training in decommissioning, rope access and industrial competency. It’s certainly good news for engineering students who will get to practise their technical skills in an environment that replicates the real demands of a working site. College Principal Jason Faulkner said: “The industrial training rig is 30 feet high, which, when you are at the top, gives a real feeling of height. The rig also

provides the chance to test your technical skills when faced with the restrictions and accessibility issues of a tight space. No amount of classroombased learning can prepare you for that. “Our students will walk away, not just with the technical skills they need in their careers, but they will also have the high levels of competency and safety awareness that will make them ready for work.”

ENGINEERING STUDENTS VISIT WILTON ENGINEERING

Engineering students have recently visited Wilton Engineering in Middlesbrough to take a tour of the site and hear from Wilton Engineering CEO, Bill Scott OBE. The students were able to find out more about the different job roles on the site and see for themselves the kind of projects the company is involved with. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Wilton Engineering over the coming year.

PEO STUDENTS GET TO GRIPS WITH WELDING Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations students have been learning how to weld over the last few weeks. Working in the engineering workshop the students began by learning how to weld in a straight line before getting to grips with welding different materials together. Did you know that welding was first attempted in space in 1969?

FOOTBALL ACADEMY

KICKS ON

For this edition of Newsbite we caught up with our Football Academy head coach, Mark Proctor. Ex Boro legend Mark has over 30 years’ experience of playing and coaching at the highest levels. ‘‘We are approaching the first anniversary since the launch of the Academy and it’s been a great first year,’’ said Mark. ‘‘We have grown the number of players in the Academy as the year has gone by and I am really excited to have seen the improvement in all the players.’’ It is clear to see that Mark’s passion for the Academy shines bright. He said: ‘‘Our aim for this academy has never changed, we are wanting it to be inclusive for players of all levels and abilities. All we ask is that you bring your enthusiasm and passion for improving.’’ Students studying a full-time course at the College are able to become academy

players*. The Academy provides both male and female players with the opportunity to complete training and nutritional programmes similar to professional players and play competitive football for the College football team. The Football Academy has recently announced big plans for the future with the development of a 3G football pitch on the College campus**. This is the latest stage in our investment in our sport facilities after the recent refurbishment of our sports hall and upgrade of our fitness suite. Did you know that students are able to use the fitness suite free of charge? Free inductions are also available. *Subject to course timetabling. **Subject to approval.

PUBLIC SERVICES RAISE

FUNDS FOR GOOD CAUSES Level 3 Public Services students have been learning event planning skills as part of their leadership and teamwork modules after holding fundraising events to help raise money for local charities. As part of their fundraising efforts students have held Christmas markets to raise funds for local charities such as Zoe’s Place and the Dogs Trust. The market stalls included a tombola, photobooth, sweet shop and the opportunity to stroke a dog for a donation to Dog’s Trust. Lewis, a Public Services student from Redcar, said: ‘‘The event was a great way to raise money for local charities but also helped towards a key module on our course. We developed so many new skills hosting this event and we all had a great time.’’ In addition to the Christmas markets it has been a busy few months for our Public Services team. Students have recently taken part in the fire service fitness test at Redcar Community Fire Station, and developed woodland survival skills and have been learning how to rock climb.

CHILDCARE AND HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE STUDENTS SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITY Even the smallest of changes can make a whole world of difference to someone living with dementia. Students studying Childcare and Health & Social Care have been able to learn not only more about dementia but also gain first hand experience of working with people living with dementia. Before Christmas, students were given the opportunity to become Dementia Friends, with over 423 students from across the College taking part. However, students on the Childcare and Health & Social Care courses have been able to take this training even further by supporting the College to work with Dementia Friendly Redcar and Cleveland to deliver monthly dementia tea dances, an event which allows a range of people living with dementia in the local community to come together to enjoy an afternoon of music and dance.

Michelle Kelso, programme area lead for Health and Childcare said: ‘‘It has been really lovely to see the dementia dances go from strength to strength. The students have really got involved with the dances and it has been great to see them interact with the local community. It really is great experience for them.’’

HAND WASHING

Techniques

Health & Social Care students have recently been learning a range of new skills and knowledge around infection control. Students have taken part in workshops with the NHS to find out more about the use of personal protective equipment when working in the health and social care industry and how to correctly wash your hands. Check out this NHS guide to hand washing.

MEET PLASTERING STUDENT Poppy When it comes to career goals few are more focused than Plastering student Poppy who knows exactly what she wants to do, and all the signs show she has the skills to get there. With her heart set on a future in fibrous plastering, we interviewed Poppy to find out more about the course. Why did you choose to study Plastering at Redcar & Cleveland College? I studied Business before this and that made me realise I didn’t want to be sat behind a desk every day. I wanted to be doing something. I have always done some renovation with my mum and one day I suddenly thought why not plastering? It was a spur of the moment thing. Tell us about the course? I started on Level 1 Plastering but after looking at our grades myself and another student were brought straight up to Level 2. I am now studying on the Level 3 course. It has been great and a lot of fun. I have made really good friends. It is a great environment to be in. What made you choose Redcar & Cleveland College? Redcar was one of the only colleges in the region to offer the course that I wanted to do. When I came and spoke to the tutor he was really enthusiastic and I was really excited to get started. What is a typical day like? It is really hands-on. We do a bit of theory. It isn’t easy but it is different in

an enjoyable way. You get lots of practice in the workshop. The group is great fun, we have a laugh but work hard. Would you recommend the plastering courses at Redcar & Cleveland College to other people? Definitely. Coming on to the course has really helped me to broaden my horizons and see where I want to go in my career. I’m really looking forward to it. What’s next for you? At the end of the course I’m hoping to find employment or an apprenticeship. I really want to keep learning and to build my skills and experience.

BUILDING SKILLS FOR A

DIGITAL FUTURE

Tech-savvy students are learning the true value of their skills. The Computer Science and Creative Media teams have been delivering a range of digital services to the local community. “Understanding the many ways in which their skills can be used in business and everyday life is an integral part of our digital programmes,” said course leader for IT and Creative Media, Sam Beel. For organisations such as The P.A.D Foundation, a Skelton-based charity that helps place defibrillators in remote areas of East Cleveland, that included the creation of a new logo and digital

newsletters. Students even organised a fundraiser for the charity, raising a fantastic £80 with their own big screen games tournament! Sam said: “Offering our students the chance to work with real clients on real life briefs is what sets our digital courses apart. “It is about giving learners the chance to experience what it would be like to work in the digital industry as well as understanding the diversity of the work.”
