We have been working closely with our course tutors to develop our ‘Get Started’ programme to help you get started in your chosen course and ensure a smooth transition into college life. Over the next couple of months we will be sending you lots of information and top tips. If you have any questions about the course tasks in this booklet please do not hesitate to contact the course leader who will be able to help. TASK 1: RESEARCH DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION CAREERS For this task we would like you to research different careers within the construction industry. We would like you to use the National Careers Service website to learn more about careers. On the next page we have provided you with a worksheet to add your answers next to the five careers we would like you to research - bricklayer, electrician, joiner, plasterer and plumber. 1. Visit the National Careers Service website by going to: https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/explore-careers 2. Enter one of the five careers we would like you to research into the box on the website. 3. Make some notes about the different careers in the worksheet on the next page, how much you could earn, what skills you might need and what day-today tasks you will be doing in these careers. 4. TASK 2: UNDERSTANDING PPE A key part of your role working in the construction industry is to abide by health and safety laws and ensure that you are wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. For this task we have produced a short presentation covering health and safety signs in the construction industry. Click here to view the presentation. It covers the different types of PPE signs you may see around a construction site and what type of PPE you would need to use in these areas. On the next page there is a worksheet to test your knowledge on these signs. Add your answers in the box for 5 different types of PPE signs.
