A team of unemployed young people have been rolling up their sleeves to help turn a house in to an activity based youth club. Thanks to funding from UK Steel, the team were able to purchase the necessary materials to redecorate the property based in Grove Hill ready for Kids Kabin to host their workshops. With a timescale of just one week, the team were able to repaint both inside and outside the property, cut down branches, assemble new shelving, put up new lampshades and put together the new summerhouse in the back garden. Kids Kabin takes mobile trailer workshops into disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Newcastle upon Tyne and Middlesbrough and runs street pottery, cookery, woodwork and bike repair workshops for children. Children, aged 7-13 years, take part in practical, hands on activities on their terms and in their streets. They learn new skills and then share these skills, boosting their selfconfidence and enabling them to play active and positive roles in their community. Sue (McBride, Project Manager, from Kids Kabin, said: “We were extremely lucky to have the Princes Trust choose us for one of their community action projects, it was important for us to have our young
people involved in the project from the beginning with their ideas being taken into consideration. We are very grateful for all the work done to our building, all the young people were hard working and respectful of our project, and would like to extend our thanks to all those who took part.” Middlesbrough Prince’s Truist Team Leader, Martin Copley, said: “The project was a lot of work for the team to complete in such a short space of time but everybody really pulled their sleeves up and got the job done. “Kids Kabin work hard to engage young people in the Middlesbrough area and we were grateful we could aid them in the amazing work they do.” Jonathan McCulpha, Middlesbrough Prince’s Trust student, said: “The community project has been my favourite part of the course so far. I love painting and decorating but it made such a difference knowing we are helping young people in our local area.”

group were able to tidy up the area, plant trees and put up a new gate and fencing. Michael Armstrong, 19, from Shildon, a student working on the project, said: “I have really loved working on the project, it is for such a good cause and I’m glad I have had the opportunity to contribute. I have learnt so many new skills and improved on the ones I already had but most importantly we all worked as a team against the weather.”
The Prince’s Trust Bishop Auckland team programme, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, encourages its groups to complete community projects in their local area. The West Mills Project, lead by Michael O’Neil, is a five year project with the goal of transforming the area of land donated by the County Council, opposite the Rugby Club along the river in to a sensory area and a habitat in which wildlife can thrive.
Marc Iveson, Prince’s Trust Team Leader, said: “This was such a fantastic project to be involved in, one that we hope we can continue to work with until it is completed in five years’ time. Despite a few setbacks with the weather, the group really engaged with the project and understood how important it could be for their local area.” Michael O’Neil, added: “With help from the Prince’s Trust team we are off to a very strong start and we hope they can continue to work closely with us.”
Michael O’Neil, Project Lead for the West Mills Project, said: “Although this project is really important to the area, we are still relying completed on fundraising and volunteers. We want this to be a place that is free for the public and appeals to people of all abilities.” During the week that they were there the

After weeks of hard work and preparation, our Stockton team found themselves ready to pull their sleeves up and get to work on their community project. Working with Community Campus and Coatham House Projects the group got to work in their quest to help the homeless. With the aim of making a difference in the community, the team split in to two small groups with the first working on clearing out rooms ready to redecorate for re-occupancy, and the other working on painting the outside of the community hub offices. Using practical skills such as painting and decorating, plastering and joinery, the team, who were supervised by professionals,
worked together to ensure they had everything completed in time and to a very high standard. Once finished, Group Leader Melisa, said: “Myself and Nav are so proud of the team and all the hard work they have put in throughout the week. They really buckled down and got the job done and it is lovely to see how rewarding it is for them all to be making a difference in their local community.”

STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER TO SUPPORT VETERANS AT CHRISTMAS TIME A group of unemployed young people have worked together to construct a Christmas Remembrance wreath for the veterans in the local area. Now displayed in Phoenix House, a rehabilitation centre run by Help for Heroes, the group each carved their own circle and poppy to be displayed on the wreath and were joined by local Gurkhas who also helped. Working closely with North Yorkshire Youth, as their team project the group wanted to create something that would mean a lot to the local community. They felt that a wreath was seasonal but combined with the poppies would also bring meaning and sentiment to the project.
Chris Barnes, Prince’s Trust Catterick Team Leader, said: “It was amazing to see this group of young people come up with such a meaningful project idea. It was great to see the local Gurkhas join us and help with carving the wreath and I really think the group benefited from working with them. “The team are so proud that their work now has pride of place in Phoenix House, it is such an important centre in our area so to produce something for them is a real honour.”

A Darlington care home has been given a boost after a group of unemployed young people volunteered to give their communal garden a makeover. The Prince’s Trust Darlington Team programme, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, encourages its students to take part in a community project in their local area. When Ollie, a member of the team suggested that his grandmother’s care home was in need of some work the group raised funds for materials and volunteered to help. Wilton House care home was in need of a helping hand to make its outdoor space more accessible for wheelchair users. Vince Loftus, maintenance man at the care home, said: “We have always known the work outside needed doing but it is a lot of work for just one person, on top of my other jobs around the building and I found it hard to find the time to do it on my own.” In the week that they worked there, the team worked together to extend the paving to the garden, extended the pond, repaired the fence in the car park, painted staff rooms and toilets and provided a new bird bath. Student, Zack, 24 from Darlington, said: “Despite the weather conditions, as a team we managed to get it all done in time. This community project was my favourite part of the programme and we really hope the
residents enjoy it.” Prince’s Trust Darlington Team leader Mark Hamilton, said: “The group really worked together to get this project done in time despite the weather causing problems. We are grateful we could assist Vince and the team here at Wilton House to make the surroundings more accessible for the residents.” Vince, added: “The group have been great, they completed so much digging in such a short space of time and the residents are going to love it, especially in the summer time. We are all very grateful to the Prince’s Trust team for all their help.” The Prince’s Trust 12 week Team programme is a personal development course aimed at young people aged 16 to 25 who are currently unemployed. The course focuses on progression and employability with a view to moving young people on to positive outcomes.
