The Late Dr. Roland K. Sanchez M.D. had a vison of a creating generations of sustainable valued add Santa Gertrudis seedstock.

Red Doc Farm, the Sanchez family functions as a professional seedstock operation focused on providing superior, efficient, profitable bulls and females to commercial beef producers. Our successes stem from developing bulls and replacements females that reliably add value to cattle operations in diverse environments and throughout the beef supply chain.

SALE DETAILS

Bidding

Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder without reserve. Minimum bids start at $2,500. The auctioneer (or sale manager) will settle any dispute as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.

Terms

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of seven days after the sale, whichever occurs sooner. After seven days a maintenance fee of $4.00 per day will be assessed until pickup unless Red Doc Farm is arranging trucking.

Sight Unseen Purchases

Buyers may purchase cattle through Red Doc Farm personnel at auction or private treaty without viewing the cattle. For sight unseen purchases, the buyer has the right of inspection at the time of delivery. If the animal is deemed unsatisfactory, it may be reloaded and returned to Red Doc Farm. If the animal is deemed unsatisfactory within one week of purchases, the buyer at their expense will return the animal to Red Doc Farm for a refund of the purchases price.

All International Buyers will be responsible for all exportation, health certificates/ international documents, feed, and transportation costs during the exportation process and outside of the U.S.A. International transport fees are as follows:

Cattle purchased through sale will be maintained at no cost to the buyer for 30 days. After the thirty day time frame a fee of four dollars a day, per animal will be enforced.

Certificate of Registry

A copy of the registration certificate will be furnished to the purchaser for each registered animal once proper settlement has been made. For Registered Breeders, all transfer costs will be at Red Doc Farm’s expense.

Health

Interstate Health Papers suitable for interstate shipment will be furnished on all animals. All lots will be ready to ship at time of sale.

All bulls staying at Red Doc Farm must be insured. See Alicia Sanchez, Justice Insurance Specialists on sale day or contact at 817295-5008.

Announcements

Any changes from the information of any kind in this catalog will be provided in a sale day supplement sheet or announced from the auction block and such information shall take precedence over cataloged information.

Breeding Guarantee

All animals are guaranteed to be breeders with the exception of, a) calves under 14 months of age that have not passed a fertility test: b)animals shown by purchaser after sale in which the breeding guarantee (if any) shall be agreed upon between the seller and the buyer: c) injury or disease occurring after sale; d) gross negligence or willful misconduct on part of the purchaser.

Any bull which settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by competent veterinarians, mutually agreed upon by buyer and seller, during any six-month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sales terms and conditions entitled “Option and Privilege of Return and Adjustment”) shall be considered a breeder.

Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment

All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within three months of the sale date. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller with prior arrangements if in good condition and complying with health requirements of the seller’s state. The seller shall be entitled to a six month trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If the seller proved that animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchases to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses, including but not limited to transportation, feed, and medical expenses. If the animal is not proved to be a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or issue credit for the initial selling price.

If any animal is sold and through blood typing is proven to have incorrect parentage, as represented by the certificate of registration, and for which parentage can be determined, the seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price to the buyer, refund the purchase price or issue a credit for the initial selling price upon the return of the animal to the farm of the seller.

Rights and Obligation

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Other than the guarantees and warrantees stated above, and on other warranties or guarantees expressed or implied. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.

Neither Red Doc Farm, the Sale Manager nor any other person connected with the management of the sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.

Partnership Bull Contract

All partial interest bulls are guaranteed to produce freezable quality semen. If a partial interest bull has not produced freezable quality semen within 6 months of sale date, the buyer(s) at their option may be refunded the total purchase price or be issued a credit for the initial selling price.

On all consigned bulls, Red Doc retains the right to collect semen on all bulls for in herd use for the life of the bull at Red Doc’s cost and the owners’ convenience. Red Doc retains the right to ¼ semen interest in each bull in sale with no possession. As purchaser of the bull, you own 75% semen interest and control semen sales and full possession of the bull. All parties with a semen interest will be allowed to collect and store semen for in-herd use and access required AI certificates with no obligation to others with a semen interest.

RED DOC MEASURES UP

I believe 2024 marks the 9th consecutive year I have summarized and ‘ranked’ the ultrasound and feed efficiency data from the Red Doc offering. Every year, it is one of the most anticipated sets of information I get the opportunity to analyze. This year the bulls were fed a little ‘cooler’ of a ration, and they endured a bit harsher weather conditions than normal. You’ll see that surface in the data, particularly in Average Daily Gain (ADG), but also in some of the ultrasound data. The good news is there is an immense amount of confidence bull buyers can place on the EPDs generated from the data. Moreover, this is still an incredibly efficient set of Santa Gertrudis bulls with elite carcass traits.

A lot can be said about the cost of feed in the last year; no doubt this set of bulls consumed an expensive diet. However, forecasted markets for what the progeny of these bulls will consume appears to be a bit more relaxed. As a result, I decided to leave the feed costs used in the formulas for Cost of Gain (COG) the same as last year. Regardless of the figure used for feed costs, the bulls will still rank the same for COG. You might also notice, the Grid Price used is slightly higher than a year ago, but a true reflection of the fed market we currently enjoy. Given the current cow inventory nationwide, now is the time to upgrade your genetic base via herd bull purchases. Rest assured that their resulting progeny will be worth a pretty penny as the national cow herd climbs back.

Red Doc is one of our leading breeders of Santa Gertrudis cattle. They aren’t located where you would expect – the humid climate of the Southeast – instead they are in the high, dry country of New Mexico. The family has been raising elite Santa Gertrudis cattle in central New Mexico since the 1960’s and today, genetics from their herd are boosting beef production throughout the world.

Santa Gertrudis cattle have been shown to significantly increase heterosis, provide solid maternal efficiency and withstand extreme challenges of environment, disease, and parasites since their development in South Texas many years ago. Today, they lead the way in efficiency, which is ever more important in the face of industry and other challenges that require we do more with less.

Ongoing studies at Utah State University, Texas State University, the University of Kentucky, North Carolina State University and West Texas A&M are challenging the frontiers of beef cattle production. Why are Santa Gertrudis cattle at the heart of those studies? It is because of the recognition that these cattle are special. The bos indicus component of the Santa Gertrudis breed is not the same as is typically found in the “eared” breeds; it is the result of “light-years-ahead-of-their-time” experimentation by the Kleberg family with the many different strains of bos indicus cattle that they imported into their operation for just that purpose. They were searching for just the right combination to provide the greatest sustainable, productive capacity under the harshest challenges. That effort, deep in the recesses of the history of U.S. cattle development, continues to provide unique characteristics to this First American Breed.

Red Doc Farm is one of the only cattle operations in the country currently offering an actual cost of gain on each individual bull. Our calculations are generated off our actual average feed cost “per pound as fed” at $330/ton. The COG (cost of gain) calculations are based off Grow Safe generated average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), and days on feed extrapolated over a 200 day feeding period.

Santa Gertrudis Breeders International’s genetic evaluation is one of the most comprehensive among the Bos indicus influenced breeds ensuring profitable genetics can be selected for your operation. Santa Gertrudis breeders have increased selection pressure on traits that have a positive influence on profitability. Profit starts with a live calf and increases when industry end-point targets are hit. Regardless of your marketing strategy, selling by the pound at weaning, retaining ownership and grid-marketing, establishing a consumer direct market, or taking advantage of the replacement female market, Santa Gertrudis genetics ensure that herd goals can be reached.

SGBI Expected Progeny Differences

Expected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge genetic technology. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GE-EPDs) has resulted in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. The association has access to thousands of performance verifying DNA samples. In addition, to being the first Bos Indicus-influenced breed to offer GE-EPDs, SGBI was the first beef breed to implement singlestep methodology for the incorporation of genetic information into the genetic evaluation. This approach maximizes use of data reported on all animals throughout the pedigree and greatly improves the EPD accuracy.

SGBI Indices

SGBI offers three selection indices for cattleman use. Indices are multi-trait selection tools designed to assist cattle producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. Indices provide an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and the calves were exposed to the same environment. SGBI’s indices provide performance insight to 3 beef production business models. The results are reported as a percentile ranking for each index.

• Balanced Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It further assumes that producers are either 1) marketing carcasses on the grid or 2) that buyer of their feeder calves base pricing on feedlot and carcass performance. This selection tool is designed to assist cattlemen who retain ownership through the feeding phase or market their calf crop to buyers focused on feedlot performance and/or carcass quality.

• Cow/Calf Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers form the bulls they purchase. However, it assumes all calves are marketed at weaning or soon thereafter. It further assumes that feeder calf buyers don’t base decisions on feedlot or carcass performance, making these traits less relevant to profitability. Producers marketing their calf crop at weaning, by the pound, would utilize this index when making selection decisions.

• Terminal Index: This index assumes that producers are not keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It assumes that producers are marketing carcasses on the grid, making carcass traits relevant to their business. This index fits operations using Santa Gertrudis bulls as terminal sires and retaining ownership of the calf crop through the feeding phase.

Incorporating the Santa Gertrudis Breed into Crossbreeding Strategies

Background

Approximately seven years ago I was approached by SGBI (Santa Gertrudis Breeders International) to collaborate on a crossbreeding project in northern Utah. While that relationship may seem a little odd being that northern Utah can be classified as winter tundra and the Santa Gertrudis is 3/8 Brahman the relationships began to make sense. As many herds in the United States, Utah had become a predominately Angus based beef cattle herd. While Angus cattle are very good cattle, there are some environments that they are not optimal for and the fact that as an industry we had become more one breed dominant, we were leaving a lot of performance from hybrid vigor on the table. Specifically, we were starting to see replacement heifers being culled much earlier in the production system. This was not only a concern from a production standpoint, but from an economic standpoint these heifers had not even hit break even. Essentially, these heifers/cows were having minimal production, genetic and economic impact on the herd. The Brahman background had the potential to change some of the longevity issues we were facing as well as possibly making our replacements more resilient in some challenging environments the extremely climate variable intermountain west.

When this project actually generated its first calf crop, the main thing we wanted to test was how were these calves going to perform/survive when they were calved in February in norther Utah. When the calves hit the ground, temperatures for the next 12 days never got above 20 degrees. Every calf not only survived but thrived. This actually made sense as these calves being born to Angus mothers (50%) were only 19% Brahman (31% Shorthorn). While this was great that the calves survived, the next test was going to see how they performed. These calves not only had higher weaning weights, but they also had better yield grades then Angus sired calves, quality grades that were no different, and did it using approximately 13% less feed to get to finish weight.

While the performance of the calves entering the feedlot and their subsequent final carcass quality and composition traits were impressive, we still needed to test whether these calves, specifically the heifers were going to be able to incorporated themselves into the beef herd to be quality contributors from both an economic and production standpoint. As we all know, when incorporating heifers into a beef herd it takes many years to determine whether that heifer is going to become a productive cow. Heifers from this study were incorporated every year and every year they bread up. Five groups of Santa Gertrudis replacement heifers have now been incorporated into the Utah State University beef herd and they have bred up, calved unassisted and rebred in timely manner. This is even more impressive being that Utah has been in a severe drought since 2019. As of now these crossbred cows are showing that they are resilient and meeting the original hypothesis that they would be productive and resilient. However, we may be a few years away from really determining their longevity. It is also important to note that when this project started there was one producer in Utah actively utilizing Santa Gertrudis genetics. Currently, there are over 11 producers utilizing Santa Gertrudis bulls and their genetics in herds across Utah Benefits of Hybrid Vigor and the Santa Gertrudis Breed

Some of the most important benefits have already been stated in the previous paragraphs. However, the advantages of the Santa Gertrudis breed to maximize hybrid vigor (heterosis) cannot be understated. With the majority of our herds having an Angus base, utilizing the Santa Gertrudis breed creates an instant three breed cross, which has a high level of retained hybrid vigor. In an even more optimal situation, if a producer is utilizing black baldie calves and then crosses over with a Santa Gertrudis bull they have an instant four breed cross (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman) which has even higher levels of retained hybrid vigor. Essentially, a producer can produce a high performing three or four breed cross with minimal management alteration. Due to the Shorthorn component of the Santa Gertrudis breed and the minimal amount of Shorthorn genetics in the US beef herd, it is very easy to achieve 100% F1 hybrid vigor (as long as those cows don’t have Brahman influence as well).

The other question I usually get is “what about the Brahman influence”? Remember, the Santa Gertrudis is only 3/8 Brahman. So, if you cross a Santa Gertrudis bull on Angus based calves, those calves are only going to be 19% Brahman, not even quarter bloods. I would even argue that 90% of those calves will have no identifying Brahman characteristics, but plenty of the traits that we all respect from the Brahman breed (i.e., longevity, heat tolerance, environmental resilience). To summarize, incorporating the Santa Gertrudis breed has many advantages when being utilized in crossbreeding systems. They have the potential to generate an instance 3 or 4 breed F1 crossbred calf which will have 100% hybrid vigor, but will not sacrifice performance or resilience as stated in the previous paragraphs. While the instant 3 or 4 breed cross is an obvious advantage, the other major advantage that addresses many of our rangeland issues (longevity, heat tolerance, resilience) through the incorporation of 19% Brahman genetics into our herds. Essentially, we get many of the advantages of the Brahman breed without becoming to Bos indicus influences. The modern Santa Gertrudis is not the breed that a lot of us remember from the 80’s and 90’s. The breed has evolved from a structural, carcass and performance perspective. I would challenge any producer to evaluate the production and economic benefits that they may be leaving on the table by not crossbreeding and then to evaluate if the Santa Gertrudis breed is something that might benefit their operation.

Requirements for the Red Doc Direct weaned calf/feeder calf program are detailed below. We understand the standards will not fit everyone’s program; however, we hope these marketing opportunities help your cattle bring as much value as possible.

Meet our Elite Cooperative Producers who have their elite genetics featured in this year’s sale.

Things have a way of coming full circle for fourth generation producer Stacey Montano of O/X Ranch and history tends to repeat itself. As Mr. Roland Sanchez, MD walked the stalls of the NM State Fair as a teenager falling in love with Santa Gertrudis cattle making good on his vow to own someday it was repeated with Stacey and Debbie Montano. The Montano family purchased their first Santa Gertrudis purebred heifer in 1991 from Mr. and Mrs. Roland Sanchez as they attended the New Mexico State Fair and the rest is history. O/X Ranch has been raising purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle for over 30 years as they are continually ”Striving for Excellence” to produce Santa Gertrudis Cattle. Stacey and Debbie work alongside their daughters on the family ranch to breed high quality genetics and remain active members in the Santa Gertrudis Association.

The Jack Family Ranch is located east of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. The ranch has been in the family for 4 generations, and we are bringing up the 5th generation to run it. About 6 years ago, we knew we needed to bring a change to our herd. We did a lot of research and fell in love with Santa Gertrudis cattle. We met with Red Doc and after seeing their cattle, knew this is the way we wanted to go. In 2017, we purchased 5 Red Doc bulls. With using these 5 Red Doc bulls, that first year’s calf crop average was 150lb higher wean weight, per head, than we ever had before!! Needless to say, we were sold on Red Doc genetics. Since then, we have expanded our herd to raise full blood Santa Gertrudis and 5-star replacement females.

The Montano/Rosales family has been raising Santa Gertrudis Cattle for over 30 years. The ME/ Ranch is in Ranchos de Taos New Mexico, and located in the high Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. Santa Gertrudis cattle have been in our family for 4 generations, this is a way of life for us and we love it. We have been buying Red Doc cattle for years from bulls to heifers and bred cows. With the help of Red Doc Farm and proven genetics, we have improved our herd time and time again. Cross Timbers Farm (CTF) is owned by Delight and Brooke Justice Delight was born and raised in the glow of cherry red Santa Gertrudis cattle from parents who embraced the breed’s philosophies for over 60 years by investing in quality genetics. Since 2007, CTF begin purchasing top quality, private treaty, show heifers. For over 15 years, CTF invested in Red Doc bulls and became an integral partner in the Red Doc cooperative program which has increased our profit margin significantly. The co-op has allowed us to sell our top cut sire prospects with the power of Red Doc’s high standards. With our proven history of success with Red Doc, CTF further invested in the high selling lot, RDF Si Sabe 3106. This significantly changed the trajectory of our business objectives and focus on curve bending EPDs and higher industry carcass quality. Our current herd sire, RDF Dinero’s Peacock, is producing outstanding progeny that is made for today’s commercial and seed-stock operations throughout the world. His offspring produces EPDs and efficiency that is needed in today’s industry and profit driven markets.

We bought our first 5 Santa Gertrudis heifers from Red Doc Faem in 2005. They have done well at the foot of the Manzano Mountains. We have had drought the last 5-6 years but our cattle have adapted well with low forage, heat and cold. We have 25 momma cows. They are very maternal and good milkers.

Demolition Cattle Co. is owned by Joshua Sanchez and located in Veguita, New Mexico. Joshua and his sons, Javid and Braxton, embrace the cattlemen lifestyle and work to improve life in the Rio Grande Valley for themselves and their neighbors. We’ve worked with Red Doc Farm and their proven genetics from the beginning to create our herd and brand. We continue to work with RDF to purchase sires and dams that produce great calves, year after year. Our herd is healthy and is improving our Santa Gertrudis cattle by being profit proven and data driven.

2024 is going to be the tenth year that Mother Lode Santa Gertrudis, located in the Central Valley of California, has participated in the Red Doc annual spring sale. The amazing story of how the Hixon family, of Mother Lode Santa Gertrudis, found and then contacted the equally amazing Sanchez family, of Red Doc Ranches, is much too long of a story to be told here. Having said that, my entire family agrees that our relationship with the Sanchez’s has been and continues to be an important part of our Santa Gertrudis breeding program. We purchased our first Red Doc bull over 11 years ago and we continue to buy a new bull from Red Doc every other year. Withthe influx of the great Red Doc genetics into our cow herd, our Santa Gertrudis calves continue to improve with each passing year. The heifers we sent to Red Doc this year, according to Roland Sanchez, are the best that we’ve ever sent. Which again, attests to the amazing breeding power of the Red Doc bulls! It’s with our sincerest appreciation that we at Mother Lode would like to express our heartfelt “thank you” to everyone at Red Doc, and here’s to another 10 years!
