Gavin Hood nails an icon in X-Men Origins: Wolverine
G X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 0 th C e n t u r y F o x
[
o o d n e w s f o r indie directors—it will only take two relatively well-received movies before you’re handed the keys to a major comic book franchise. Gavin Hood impressed plenty with Johannesburg gangland classic Tsotsi and the inexplicably unappreciated Rendition—and really, he had to be an improvement over X-Men: The Last Stand helmsman Brett Ratner. So, voilà, Marvel’s new Origins series. You may have thought that X-Men 2 in particular had Wolverine’s backstory covered—he was a soldier outfitted with a virtually indestructible adamantium exoskeleton by Brian Cox’s diabolical colonel many years ago. Hood explores just how many years ago and adds the ferocious Liev Schreiber as Logan’s cracked-mirror brother-in-arms Sabretooth, digging deeper into the notorious Weapon X project that spawned them both. Guys will enjoy the history of an iconic antihero, and girls will scrape their jaws off the floor during star Hugh Jackman’s many shirtless scenes.

Fighting See, the title’s a metaphor for the battles that go on in… screw it, it’s about fighting, literally. Channing Tatum is a street rat who spends his days selling counterfeit crap to naïve tourists in NYC. He winds up getting involved with underground fight manager Terrence Howard, and if you think Howard’s slumming after Hustle and Flow and Iron Man, you’re right. But hand-to-hand movies are a lost art, and this one kicks ass. In Stores August 25 Universal
Heroes: Season Three It’s rare that you see a televisionary as honest as Heroes’ Tim Kring. When the second season was dubbed a sophomore slump by critics and audiences, Kring publicly acknowledged that the pacing and romantic subplots needed to be improved. Sure enough, the third season was a major rebound, starting with an assassination attempt on Senator Petrelli and leading up to the pursuit of renegade Building 26 agents. In Stores September 1

Crank: High Voltage

A
b s u r d i s t a c t i o n c e r ta i n l y took long enough to make its way from Asia to our shores. Not like Crank is a remake of, say, a yakuza flick or anything by Hark or Wei, but it has that same gleeful, anything-goes spirit so lacking in the Rock or Vin Diesel’s vehicles. Jason Statham’s tormented hitman is scraped off the pavement directly following the end of the first installment, then spends the remainder aggressively recharging his artificial heart. Lionsgate
Universal
State of Play After the success of Traffic, it’s somewhat surprising that more overseas TV serials don’t get condensed to satiate our notoriously weak attention spans. State of Play’s middling box office probably didn’t help the cause, but the subject matter couldn’t be more relevant— questioning whether a truly independent press still exists. Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck star in this slow burn, which revolves around a U.S. Congressman’s deceased mistress. In Stores September 1 Universal
The Office: Season Five Ricky Gervais limited his original U.K. series to 12 episodes, just like his well-regarded follow-up Extras. Americans are not so modest. Luckily, The Office remains an extraordinarily well-acted and written comedy, navigating the romance between Jim and Pam without getting too “emo.” We like to think the show stays afloat via the influence of writer Michael Schur, responsible for the sadly defunct, brutally uproarious baseball blog Fire Joe Morgan. In Stores September 8 Universal
[
Parks & Recreation: Season One Speaking of Michael Schur from Fire Joe Morgan (no, we’re not on his payroll, although Mike, if you’re reading this…), here’s his latest NBC comedy, co-created with Greg Daniels, another vital creative mind behind The Office. SNL/ Baby Mama troublemaker Amy Poehler is perfectly cast as a delusional bureaucrat struggling to generate green space out of a crappy construction pit. Rashida Jones and Aziz “Raaaaaaaandy!” Ansari co-star. In Stores September 8 Universal

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season Wa r n e r
[
ig Bang fans often gripe about next-door neighbor Penny (perky Kaley Cuoco), but there’s nothing wrong with breaking up Leonard and Sheldon’s perpetual bickering once in a while. That said, Jim Parsons is well-deserving of any past, present or future Emmy nominations/wins for his outer-space portrayal of Sheldon, whom the writers have obviously identified as the human highlight reel of this stellar comedy. For the uninitiated, there isn’t much to Big Bang, which is much of its charm. Leonard (Roseanne expat Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon are young physicists who basically hang out with their two likewise socially inept pals and do nerdy stuff. The writers lovingly nail said nerdy stuff, though (sample Sheldon dialogue: “I’m polymerized tree sap and you’re an inorganic adhesive, so whatever verbal projectile you launch in my direction is reflected off of me, returns to its original projectory and adheres to you”), while retaining plenty of heart and humanity.

War for Territory
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising will get you combat-ready in a hurry
O
peration Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was so successful in portraying the realisms of war that the United States Marine Corps, the United States Secret Service and six other countries used modified versions of the game for military training. Fast forward seven years. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising quantum leaps over Cold War Crisis. It’s bigger, more realistic (wait until those JDAM explosions rattle mom’s china cabinet) and the closest Cheetos-eating gamers will ever get to war. Unless they enlist. Dragon Rising centers on the volcanic island of Skira in the North Pacific Ocean. Diplomatic channels have closed between Russian and China over ownership of the island. The next step? War. Like two well-armed playground bullies pummeling one another over a patch of grass. Anyway, the Russians can’t handle the Chinese alone, so they liaise (they don’t remember Rush’n Attack, apparently) with the U.S. military to rout Chinese forces. That’s Dragon Rising in a nutshell.
[
16 + record store magazine + september 2009
]
Well, not entirely. Codemasters wanted war on a huge scale. Even if it’s on an island. You’ll walk 4.5 real human hours from one end of Skira to the other. Need to get from the north to the south more quickly? That’s 20 actual minutes in a helicopter. In-between the long spans of land is death. Unscripted killing. Unlike the Call of Duty or Medal of Honor franchises, Dragon Rising doesn’t corral you into an alley or force you into a bunker. Everything’s wide open and subject to change. Attack the enemy checkpoint. Or don’t. Somehow conflict will find you on Skira. There are goals and objectives, but don’t expect to follow A to B in order to reach them. More than 70 weapons with real-life ballistics and 30 different vehicle types (land, sea, air) are at your disposal, but it’s the Ego Engine AI that’s sweetest. Friendly or enemy, the AI responds to your tactics and movements. Think that charred farmhouse is sufficient cover from a Chinese Type 99 tank battalion? Don’t bet on it. The enemy AI thinks on-the-fly and will rub you out
The Beatles: Rock Band Wii, PS3, 360 [ea]
The same day that those wonderful remastered mono and stereo boxes drop, the Fab Four’s long-awaited foray into the Rock Band universe follows suit. The big difference from prior iterations is the inclusion of a three-part harmony system, obviously integral to recapturing many Beatles classics. The instruments look suitably vintage, and since all you need is love, if you botch a tune too badly, you won’t even be booed off stage. In Stores September 9
Muramasa: The Demon Blade Wii [Ignition] A 2D side-scroller, set in feudal Japan, with stunning visuals, an intuitive control/attack system (using Wii remote/ nunchuk), special attacks, big end-boss fights and plenty of re-playability? Where do we sign up? There’s not much missing from this gorgeous old-school beat ’em up that we can’t wholeheartedly support. Fans of Odin Sphere are in for a real treat. In Stores September 8.
Mini Ninjas X360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC [Eidos ] faster than you can open a package of Double Stuf Oreos. Changing tactics to address the situation is the only way to survive. Friendly AI is just as proficient, though. Bullet to the arm? Ouch. Your squadmates provide cover or move you to safety so wounds can be tended. Dragon Rising features single and multiplayer modes. In the single-player mode, it’s the classic move-up-the-ranks story across 20 missions. Start off as a grunt. End up—if you don’t take too many dirt naps—a commander. Multiplayer’s 16 vs. 16 on the PC and eight vs. eight on the X360 and PS3. The Republic of China Army has 130,000 troops. You struggle with the Pringles can. Codemasters’ newest shooter should prep you for the inevitable. At least you’ll know how to take a bullet like a man. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising beachheads October 6 for X360, PS3 and PC.
We’ve always wanted to be Sho Kosugi. That may never happen, but thanks to Eidos we can ninja vicariously through the small but agile Hiro or lumbering but powerful Futo. In Mini Ninjas, your goal is to thwart the Evil Samurai Warlord. But first you must prove yourself as a diminutive arse-kicker. In Stores September 8
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 X360, PS3, PSP, PS2, Wii, DS [Activision] Times are tough. It’s hero vs. hero. At the heart of the conflict is the Superhuman Registration Act. In the sequel, Activision ups the action-RPG ante, allowing you to control which heroes are pro- or anti-registration for multiple endings. The gameplay is similar to the first Ultimate Alliance, but everything else has been improved. In Stores September 15
NHL 10 X360, PS3 [EA]
Following in NHL 09’s hallowed footsteps, EA is keen on maintaining the “Wow Factor” in NHL 10 by making over 200 gameplay tweaks, including board-play, puck-control and player movement mechanics. Crowds also play more of a role. As usual, look for updated graphics, better online play and some guy named Alex Ovechkin to rule the ice with an iron fist and a wicked slapshot. In Stores September 15
Wet X360, PS3 [Bethesda Softworks]
Meet Wet’s Rubi Malone. She wields a blade (a long one), a gun and more attitude than your sister’s best friend. Think Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia meets Kill Bill-style action. Rubi’s objective is to bring down the black market human organ trade. She does so, ruthlessly executing all kinds of bad dudes that try to obstruct her. In Stores September 15

Jay-Z’s latest aims to rewrite the pitch-corrected rap game
Y
ou surely remember “Swagga Like Us,” the M.I.A.-sampling T.I./Jay-Z/Lil Wayne/Kanye super-collaboration from T.I.’s Paper Trail. Well, the sequel was supposed to pop up on this, Jay’s final album for Def Jam, but no dice. Instead, the Brett Favre of hip-hop gave us “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune),” which puts the massively overused vocal effect to bed… unless you’re Jigga’s best friends Wayne and Kanye. They get a pass. (Actually, the song was consciously removed because it was so Auto-Tune heavy, although Jay’s not exactly refunding Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreaks profits.) So, okay, not a Hall of Fame moment for integrity, but that doesn’t mean we’re not psyched for the third Blueprint, especially after Jay’s aesthetic rebirth via the American Gangster soundtrack. Like Favre, he can still zing it in there once in a while, so why not let him play ’til he decides it’s over? Not to mention we get song title of the year candidate “The Audacity of Dope.”

Muse’s world takeover continues with The Resistance
Muse The Resistance Wa r n e r
[
T
h o u g h y ou di e , La Resistance lives on. Matt Bellamy’s probably not referencing South Park here, given his proclivity for megaton-sized guitar epics about paranoia, conspiracy and warfare. A sampling of song titles—“United States of Eurasia,” “Uprising,” “Exogenesis: Symphony Part I (Overture)”—indicates content both political and proggy, but advance word is that it’s all just a metaphor for love. Looks like Bellamy’s got a little Lennon in him, but let’s hope he doesn’t forget the Prince, Hendrix and Morello, too. After all, what made Muse stadium fixtures (overseas) is his populist virtuosity—not just at guitar but piano, as evidenced in the trio’s titanic performance at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2007, captured on the H.A.A.R.P. DVD He can incite pits with urgent speed-riffing (“Stockholm Syndrome”) then channel the Purple One’s sexy falsetto (“Supermassive Black Hole”) at the drop of a hat. Here’s hoping that The Resistance affords Muse Radiohead-level acclaim.

AUTOLUX

n o t h e r p l ay e r i n the Whatever Happened to Those Guys Derby, Los Angeles quartet Autolux debuted with a shimmering bit of shoegaze in 2005’s Future Perfect. Then drummer Carla Azar broke her arm and was told she may never pound the skins again. Eight titanium screws later, she’s finally healthy, and the band is finally back to work on sophomore effort Transit Transit. Ex-Failure multi-instrumentalist Greg Edwards generates some truly evocative guitar effects, and frontman Eugene Goreshter’s androgynous coo recalls the best of My Bloody Valentine. date

Gene Simmons drive you crazy? Sign up for Team Ace. Frehley, criminally no longer a member of KISS, is the guy who designed their logo, for crying out loud. It took him almost 20 years to concoct this fourth solo effort, but it’s worth the wait, as the legend has a rollicking new take on Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” to offer, as well as a plethora of nifty guitar tricks. If you’re one of those people who’s always whining about celebrity musicians, you’re just going to have to accept that ScarJo is here to stay. And, come on, she’s not exactly covering Dogstar here. After a surprisingly well-received Tom Waits covers album, she’s hooked up with veteran singer-songwriter Yorn (he wrote the eight originals; a Big Star cover is also included) for this sure to be entertaining series of duets. Mariah Carey Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Island Def Jam
Sigh… that is such a Mariah Carey title. Pretentious and ripe with the potential for icky oversharing. And yet, we still love her. Mariah’s selfabsorption and weirdness are constantly counterbalanced by her uncanny ability to stay contemporary after nearly two decades in the game. While American Idol contestants kill themselves emulating MC’s octave-shifting glass-breakers from her early days, she’s content to dial down her incredible voice for sultry (and at times understated) effect. After almost two decades on Epic, one of the few original Seattle grunge titans still standing has developed a uniquely inclusive distro model for their ninth fulllength, employing the services of everyone from Target to your friendly neighborhood indie store. Eleventh Hour Rodrigo y Gabriela like their flamenco heavy by nick green
R
odrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero’s 2005 debut Rodrigo y Gabriela was a testament to restlessness, a jumble of angular guitar lines and skittering finger-picked bass well suited to the pair’s itinerant lifestyle as street buskers and touring musicians. But Rodrigo y Gabriela’s new record, 11:11, finds the duo back on their home turf of Ixtapa, Mexico, with an expanded—and altogether more comfortable—approach that incorporates electric guitar, funky rhythms and percussion. 11:11 suggests wanderlust of a different type: 11 songs influenced more by their favorite musicians than their rapidly changing surroundings.
[
24 + record store magazine + september 2009
]
According to Sanchez, the album’s title is a way of reinforcing the idea that it is simply a collection of 11 songs influenced by 11 different artists. But there’s also a double-meaning: “Gabriela and I have both been running into the number ‘11’ for years. But we’re also artists who work with instrumental, wordless music. As we tour around the world, each country will essentially have a different name for the record, or a different way of pronouncing it. It’s a neat way of giving fans in each country the freedom to interpret the title as they want.” As befits a record with multiple different reference points, the sound of 11:11 is literally all over the map, though each of the songs is filtered through Rodrigo y Gabriela’s familiar flamenco-inflected style. On the title track, the duo pays homage to Dark Side of the Moon-era Pink Floyd; on “Buster Voodoo,” Sanchez quotes a portion of “Voodoo Chile” and plays with a wah-wah pedal to draw a parallel with Jim Hendrix. And on “Atman,” frequent collaborator Alex Skolnick adds a searing guitar solo on a song dedicated to one of the group’s other musical heroes, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. For Sanchez and Quintero, who played a role in coaxing Skolnick back into Testament, this was the ultimate form of wish fulfillment. “Alex Skolnick actually reached out to us through MySpace, and we were very much starstruck,” notes Sanchez. “Before we ever played together, I pulled him aside and told him, ‘The next album we do, we need to have you as a guest.’ When we were getting ready to record this new album, I called him and was like, ‘Now’s the time. Don’t bring anything but yourself and your Gibson.’ He was excited. And as you can hear on the record, he’s back.” 11:11 also marks another significant achievement in the band’s history: the first record they’ve been able to complete on their own terms, in a studio they built in Ixtapa while touring in 2007-2008. “It wasn’t an easy project to finish—it was actually pretty stressful and expensive. Now I feel like it was totally worth it,” laughs Sanchez. “Ultimately, I hope this enables us to find a good balance between touring, which we both really like, and having a more ‘normal,’ settled kind of life, which is something that has eluded both of us until now.” 11:11 hits stores September 8 from ATO.

Perseverance Pays Anvil’s lucky 13th full-length has inspiration to burn
A
m e r i c a n I d o l , S o Y o u Th i n k Y o u C a n Dan ce , To p C h ef —all these competitive reality shows have led the public to believe that if you have talent and a dream, you can surely find your way to fortune and glory with minimal roadblocks. Tsk, tsk. Anyone who saw Sacha Gervasi’s metal documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil knows the ugly truth. Even if you have the chops, drive and high-powered connections, it’s still not enough. For the pioneering thrash band Anvil, there was only one way they were going to make it: the very hard, very long way. “I’ve got so many, I don’t even know if you can call ’em ‘friends,’ you know, who go, ‘Hey man, I coulda been a rock star. I used to play guitar,’” says singer-guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow. “Well, what does that say? Had you not quit, you would’ve been a rock star and it’s easy? I really don’t believe in that kind of thing.” Lips and drummer Robb Reiner have put everything they have into Anvil’s 30-year existence, and when Anvil’s 13th album This Is 13 (VH1 Classic Records) reaches stereos, there’s going to be a lot of fans scrambling to catch up with this heavy metal powerhouse. The new songs paint Anvil as a team of fighters who kick their own asses in order to get out there and kick everyone else’s ass. It’s sort of fitting that the first record Lips ever bought was Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man” single. Tracks such as “Bombs Away,” “Axe to

Grind” and “Ready to Fight” act as warnings to people who have written off the band. “To say what keeps me inspired is very difficult to answer,” says Lips. “But the bottom line is, we really love what we do, and it’s as simple as that. And we’re not tired of it. It’s not a question of keeping inspired; it’s a question of not getting bored. Maybe it’s because I’ve got one of the greatest drummers in the world and I have an endless supply of ideas in the way that this guy can do anything I want. All I have to do is dream it up and away we go.” It’s the “away we go” part that is crucial to Lips’ and Reiner’s formula. In Anvil, you don’t dream about something unless you’re going to make it a reality or die trying. This Is 13’s smash-and-grab song “Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda” was referred to by Reiner as the unofficial Anvil anthem. “You should live your life without regrets,” shouts Lips emphatically when asked to elaborate. “And everything you do, you do it on purpose! I don’t think there’s any profound other meaning to the song. People shouldn’t go through their life saying ‘I should have’ or ‘I could have.’ If you’re gonna make it happen, you make it happen.” This Is 13 arrives September 15 from VH1 Classic Records. To Be or To Let It Be
Is remastering the Beatles’ canon really necessary? In a few words: Yeah, yeah, yeah by Brian Baker
T
w e n t y- pl u s y ea r s a g o , as a premium for a design job well done, my friend Keith and I were rewarded with a set of the Beatles’ initial CD releases. The only problem? Two of us, one set of discs. We split them the best way we could imagine; we drank beer, put the discs in a garbage bag and took turns drawing them out until we both had half the set. The technology was new then, but we didn’t think about that; we had the Beatles on CD at last. As sonic advances increased, more early CD releases were remastered to bring out inaudible subtleties missed on the first issues, forcing diehard collectors to repurchase catalogs they had already duplicated once. There was always fan grumbling, but they ponied up the dough. Now Beatles fans, who have been buying different configurations of the same songs for four decades, are once again digging deep to replicate their collections— not just once, but, in most cases, twice—when the Beatles’ remastered catalog is reissued in both stereo and applicable mono formats on September 9. (9/9/09... get it? “One After 909”? “Revolution No. 9”?) So, why aren’t these persecuted zealots storming EMI’s castle with torches and pitchforks? Or at least simply refusing to get shaken down for more of the same old same old? Because they know they’re getting the goods this time, that’s why.
[

]
The Beatles’ new stereo remasters draw on original masters and utilize technological wizardry that was science fiction fantasy two decades ago. Early notice on the fresh remasters is that they may be the closest thing yet to what George Martin and the Fabs heard in the control room almost half a century ago. But for true Beatles freaks, the mono remasters are the holiest of grails; it’s widely known that Martin and the band were the most meticulous with the mono versions, presumably because they wanted the single-speaker car radio crowd to have the same listening experience as the bachelor pad hi-fi set. To the rabid Beatleologist, the mono box set—which only goes as far as The White Album, the last album mixed for mono—is the sonic equivalent of Viagra... and there will be erections lasting longer than four hours. Of course, the sting of repurchasing the Fabs’ catalog is lessened by numerous extras; the stereo box includes original UK artwork, expanded booklets/liner notes, rarely seen photos and mini-documentaries on all 13 albums in QuickTime on each disc individually (compiled onto a single DVD for the box), while the limited issue mono box features its CDs in mini-LP sleeves, approximating the vinyl format that, until now, was the only way to experience these records in their original sonic splendor. (If you think mono is flat and boring, wait until you hear this stuff; you’ll be amazed at the nuances in the Beatles’ single dimension.) And both boxes will include their own versions of the Past Masters series. A quick blogosphere check reveals virtually no fan complaints for having to ante up for albums that topped the charts during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. What could possibly drive so many to lay out their hard-earned coin, in the current economic climate, for what may be among the most re-released music on the planet? Perhaps because the Beatles produced the greatest pop music the world had ever heard to that point, music that continues to impact subsequent generations, musicians and listeners alike. Opening a wallet for the Beatles never seems like a bad idea. Remasters arrive 9/9/09 from Apple/EMI.
