Robin Williams’ paternal instincts are dubious at best in World’s Greatest Dad

R

o bi n W i l li am s starri ng in a movie written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait.” Here’s where you start turning the page, and here’s where we command you to stop. If you’re thinking Patch Adams and Police Academy, don’t. In easily the funniest, dirtiest, most unforgiving comedy of the year, Williams plays a mopey loser of a high school poetry teacher who can’t get a single manuscript published in his off time. When his son (Daryl Sabara, Spy Kids) kicks it doing something we really can’t discuss in these family-friendly pages, Williams pens the lad’s suicide note rather than suffer the indignity of the world knowing the truth. The newfound respect his deadbeat progeny gains is black comedy gold. Although Sabara leaves World’s Greatest Dad at the halfway point, he’s responsible for an almost pants-wetting barrage of potty-mouthed asides that’ll keep you chuckling when the film enters Heathers homage mode.

All About Steve “Cruciverbalist” means “creator of crossword puzzles,” yet you never see it as an answer in crossword puzzles. It’s also the occupation of Sandra Bullock in this comedy, and the underrepresented cruciverbalist population might not be thrilled with her depiction. SB’s workaholic Mary is a clingy loser who promptly becomes obsessed with cameraman Steve (The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper), leading to many comic misadventures. Thomas Haden Church co-stars. Silent Night, Deadly Night Compilation In this three-disc set you get SNDN III: Better Watch Out, IV: Initiation and V: The Toymaker, which begs the question: Have they really made at least five freaking Silent Night, Deadly Nights? Well, we can assure you that the 1984 original is a hilarious minor horror classic, deeply upsetting parents and religious rights groups before Bad Santa took a dump in the eggnog 20 years later. Paper Heart

R

e m e m b e r t h e a w k w a r d Asian girl who hung out with the stoners in Knocked Up? That was Charlyne Yi, an up-and-coming comic who took big risks with this deeply personal film. Paper Heart is essentially a documentary about love, as Yi travels the country espousing skepticism on true unyielding devotion—until she meets Michael Cera. The two dated and split in real life, so it’s up to you to separate reality from fiction. Starz/Anchor Bay

Saturday Night Live: The Complete Fifth Season When people prattle on about this show’s golden years, season five is pretty much the last gasp. The original crew of Not Ready for Prime Time Players (including Bill Murray and Gilda Radner) and their writing staff were still at the top of their game in 1979. The musical guests are just as impressive, as we were treated to in-their-prime B-52s and Blondie, plus incendiary performances from Dylan, McCartney and the Grateful Dead. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Borrowing liberally from Jumanji, the first NATM was a no-brainer for Ben Stiller—he got in a poo-throwing fight with a monkey (okay, it was a slap fight), and admirably played it straight amid an avalanche of CGI terrors. This time around, his security guard has to break into the Smithsonian to save mini-Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan, shipped there by mistake. As on The Simpsons, Hank Azaria tackles multiple roles with gusto. In Stores December 1

Terminator Salvation And now for one of the stranger action sequels in memory. The first Terminator flick without Ah-nuld trades for a much better actor in Christian Bale, who immediately submarines his likeability with a profane rant against a bumbling DP. And who better to helm the story of the adult John Connor’s revolt against the machines than… Charlie’s Angels director McG? All weirdness aside, Salvation delivers the cybernetic thrills you’ve come to expect. In Stores December 1 WARNER BROS.

50 Cent Before I Self Destruct Interscope

Final Countdown It took him long enough, but 50 Cent is ready to Self Destruct

R

emember when 50 said he’d retire if Kanye’s Graduation outsold Curtis in their first week of head-to-head competition? Well, he was just playing. And, supposedly, just playing when he mocked Ye’s “Love Lockdown” via lip sync at a concert last year, chastising the crowd that the frigid soul number was what they were now “stuck with.” Although “Get Up” is a credible “In Da Club” flashback, we wish 50 would start beefs with people who, you know, actually stink. But obviously, the head-to-head defeat affected Curtis Jackson, as he and his label have been tinkering with this fourth full-length since February. As is common in hip-hop, four singles have been released already, the aforementioned “Get Up,” the Dr. Dre-helmed one-two “I Get It In” and “OK, You’re Right,” and most recently “Baby by Me.” Between 50’s primal desire to win at all costs and the almost comical delays, this continues to be one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

Long Island sounds smoother than ever on Alicia Keys’ latest

Alicia Keys The Element of Freedom MBK/J Records

[

I

f Jay-Z is hip-hop’s living and breathing patriarch, the kind of guy you really don’t want to upset, Alicia Keys owns the same role in soul/R&B. It’s the reason their pairing on “Empire State of Mind” is so regal and powerful, which explains why the whole world cringed when unworthy upstart Lil Mama crashed the stage during its rendition at this year’s VMAs. A revamped version of the instant classic, “Empire State of Mind II,” closes this release, and HOV isn’t the only big-ticket guest star making Freedom an event album. His nearest and dearest Beyoncé makes “Put It in a Love Song” a duet to remember, and Mariah Carey lends her unmistakable pipes to “More Than Just Friends.” First single “Doesn’t Mean Anything” possesses a dreamlike quality that is an obvious evolution from anything Keys has released before. The lady simply oozes assurance—she’s truly our generation’s princess of soul.

It’s Getting Loud in Here, So Take Off All Your Strings

It’s lights, camera, soundcheck in the new rockumentary It Might Get Loud by brian baker

F

ro m it s i n c ept i o n , rock ‘n’ roll has been an integral part of film, as both soundtrack and subject. As the focus of a movie, rock has a somewhat less than stellar track record, with fictional (or fictionalized) accounts veering into histrionic parody and straight documentaries replacing passion with an overtaxed sense of historical perspective. Certainly, films that have gotten rock ‘n’ roll right hold a special place for fans of both mediums. Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous was a lovingly detailed evocation of rock’s evolution, Val Kilmer made a devastating Jim Morrison in The Doors, even if the movie could have been a bit more sharply written, and the independent Turtles biopic DVD from earlier this year, My Dinner With Jimi, was a low-key but ultimately wonderful bit of cinematic storytelling. Martin Scorsese has done a lot to revive the fortunes of the music documentary; his PBS series on the blues was compelling and his Rolling Stones concert movie, Shine a Light, was a huge advance in the form. But director Davis Guggenheim may well have found a new and brilliant documentary structure with It Might Get Loud, ostensibly a truncated history of electric guitar, but ultimately a personal glimpse behind rock’s veil in the form of a summit between Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s the Edge and the White Stripes’ Jack White. There’s plenty of backstory: how Page came to be one of the greatest guitarists in history (the summit is held at Headley Grange, where many of Zeppelin’s legend-

ary albums were recorded), how the Edge plays effects and pedals as much as guitar, and how White increased his musical knowledge by becoming an upholsterer’s apprentice in Detroit. Beyond the individual spotlights, the pinnacle of It Might Get Loud is when the trio sits down together to tell stories, trade tips (White says openly, “I plan to trick both of these guys into teaching me all of their tricks.”) and jam together on each other’s songs. When Page launches into “Whole Lotta Love,” you can visibly see White and the Edge sink inexorably into fanboy worship. At one point in It Might Get Loud, Page says, “Every night that we went onstage, it was living. Totally living.” That passion and dedication is why Led Zeppelin were and remain one of the greatest rock bands of all time. That same passion is at the heart of the Edge’s work in U2 and White’s contributions to every project he touches. Internet chatrooms and comment sections are already packed with haters saying White has no place with Page or the Edge in this movie, but that’s a ridiculous assertion. White’s success and fame are no less valid than his older and more established peers in It Might Get Loud, and his passion for rock in all its permutations is every bit as palpable as his brothers in arms. And it’s pretty damn cool to see him make a guitar out of a board, a couple of nails, a Coke bottle and a pick-up. And I’d love to see Page play it. Between the history, the inside stories, the camaraderie and the jams, It Might Get Loud is the perfect documentary for any rock fan who wonders about the men behind the curtain. Your hair will be raised, your flesh will be goosed and your rock will most assuredly be rolled. it might get loud is available December 22 from Sony Pictures.

f t e r a co u pl e months of sold-out shows across the country, Them Crooked Vultures are in Europe this month, but they’ve left behind their debut selftitled album. It’s rare that a brand-new band can sell out tour dates, playing music that no one’s ever heard to thunderous applause. But it’s rarer that a band is made up of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Homme spent some time talking about how this unlikely combination actually makes a lot of sense. (Check out www.recordstoreday. com for more with Homme on record stores, his latest discovery at a record store and why vinyl is the greatest thing around.) You and Dave Grohl have played together often, and are friends, but how did the idea of an entirely new band with John Paul Jones come up? Homme: For many years, Dave and I have been looking for something to do when the schedules line up. We’ve talked for a long time about who should we include that makes that chemistry right. He mentioned Jones, and I thought he was joking at first. Then [I] come to find out he’s serious and he’s been corresponding with Jones. Then I met Jones and we hit it off, and two days later we started playing.

Them Crooked Vultures are the rare supergroup that demands your immediate attention by Carrie Colliton Was this a jam session at first, or did you know from the beginning you were going to make new music? Homme: After that first jam session, a couple things were clear: We had good chemistry and Dave didn’t really know what he was unleashing when he asked us to do this. In a way, I was like, well, we have to do this, and it has to be really good. Otherwise, it was like saying, “Why couldn’t the three of you make something you really enjoyed?” You and Dave have both been in bands where you’re the lead and bands where you’re the drummer. How did you decide who was going to do what, and not to do some sort of Genesis thing? Homme: You used a good example, because we all understand that you can’t Phil Collins the thing where you’re playing drums and singing. Because that’s just not cool. Dave and I knew that, in the situation we’re looking for, he’s on drums and I’m on guitar. Or I’m on bass. But that didn’t become necessary with Jones. I wanted Dave to sing some more, but he kept saying, “I’m the drummer.” I think he really wanted to scratch that itch. Them Crooked Vultures is available now from Interscope.

Attitude Adjustment

Weezer pop your expectations on the infectious Raditude by Gary Graff You’ve done another “real” album title with Raditude. Do you like those better than the different colored Weezer albums? P at r ick Wi l s o n: If I had my way, we would just use colors from now on; then we wouldn’t have to think about titles. We must’ve had a hundred titles for the [Red] record, and none of them felt right, so we just gave up and said, “OK, let’s just make a color.” Since the Red album, Rivers Cuomo is no longer the sole songwriter in Weezer. What difference does that make? W ilso n : It just seemed like that was the healthy way to keep everything feeling fresh. After 15 years of doing it the other way, it just felt like it was time. Now that we’ve got more writers, we don’t have to wait for Rivers to have a bunch of songs he’s happy with. We used to take forever to make a record, then tour on it forever and be burnt out and not do anything for two years. This is a lot better. R i v e r s C u o m o : It definitely feels like there’s a lot more of our energy that over the years has kind of been pent up. Now it’s been released and is flowing freely between the four of us. And I get a chance to do things

I’ve never done because other people are doing my job. So, when my drummer is out playing lead guitar and [singing] lead vocals, I get to go back and play drums, and that’s a blast for me. Rivers put some of the infamous, lost Black Hole album on the Alone collection. Is there ever a chance of that album coming out in its entirety? Cuo mo : Well, I never finished it. I’d say I got about a third of the way through, and then a lot of if it turned into Pinkerton and then was released. And then most of the rest of the scraps have been put out by now. I definitely considered [releasing] it, but I don’t think it would be strong enough to warrant putting out as an album. It seems like something I could put out in pieces, and then maybe a fan could put [it] together and I could give ’em the artwork, and it could be something you could kind of make yourself at home or something like that. raditude is in stores now from Geffen.
