You can’t say you’ve experienced the Island until you’ve visited The Needles, the Island’s most visited and most Instagrammed location. You can see them in a number of ways, including hiking along the nearby clifftops, taking the famous chairlift down to the beach, or taking a boat tour to view them up close. Kids and kids at heart will especially enjoy the activities at The Needles Landmark Attraction, with plenty on offer including rides, amusements, crazy golf, candy-making demos, a 4D cinema experience, and - of course - the opportunity to take home some of that famous coloured sand!

When not visiting for a holiday, the chances are you’ll be heading to the Island for one of its many eclectic events. Once playing host to the largest music event of its time (the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, whose headliners Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors and Leonard Cohen drew over 600,000 people) the Isle of Wight has gained widespread notoriety for its festival and events culture. Amongst some of its most noteworthy, the ‘Isle of Wight Festival’ made a comeback in 2002 and has since featured some of the biggest names on the music scene, whilst ‘Cowes Week’ is still the oldest and biggest sailing regatta in the world.

You’re on holiday! So, if you’d rather let someone else do the cooking, we’ve got it covered. The Island is FULL of eclectic, award-winning independent restaurants, many of which feature locally grown produce and ingredients. From freshly caught seafood with a gin and a view of the sea, to a hearty roast loaded with seasonal veggies, locally reared meats, and local ale. VENTNOR

If you’re just visiting the Island and can’t afford the time to see ALL her towns and villages, be sure to keep Ventnor on your list. This town has it all and ticks A LOT of tourist boxes, making for efficient use of your time and offering plenty to keep you entertained in a localised area. Highlights include Ventnor Beach – perfect for sunbathing and swimming – fantastic independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, as well as access to some of the most scenic walks on the Island – including the Ventnor Downs, Ventnor Botanic Gardens and the beautiful Victorian Ventnor Park.

COMPTON BAY

Another unmissable stop on your tour around the Isle of Wight is the stunning Compton Bay. Located in West Wight along the famous Military Road, Compton offers a two mile stretch of gold and dark sands alongside shimmering blue waters, multi-coloured sandstone cliffs, and glorious views of the white chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay. Reminiscent of the beaches you’d find in Cornwall, this spectacular, tranquil beach is popular with surfers and water sports enthusiasts but also ideal for families (think buckets ‘n’ spades, sunbathing and swimming) – just without the amusements and donkey rides.

AQUA PARK

Fun for the whole family – especially those hard to please teens – this brand-new attraction is set on the popular Tapnell Farm Park estate and offers over 20 wet and bouncy obstacles, featuring giant freefall slides! All sessions must be booked online in advance. Make a whole day of it and explore all the other family friendly activities Tapnell has to offer, including getting hands on with the animals, sledge slides, jumping pillows, pedal carts, play areas and more. For refreshments The Cow, located on-site, serves awardwinning burgers. Yum!

COASTAL WALKS Visiting the Isle of Wight and not going for a walk along the coast – would just be a real shame! A true ‘walker’s paradise’ it’s safe to say that the Island is home to some of the most epic, scenic walks you could ask for in the UK. For the best views head to the south west of the Island. Just be careful not to get too close to the edges. Cliff erosion is an ongoing challenge in the Island’s coastal areas, so we thank visitors to help us maintain the landscape. Lace up your walking boots and be sure your camera is on full charge for all those photos!

Blessed with fertile land and the perfect mix of sun and rain (more sun than rain!) the Isle of Wight is the perfect place to grow fresh fruit, grains and vegetables as well as raise livestock. And fresh seafood? You’re surrounded by it! If you’re making some of your own meals during your stay, be sure to visit one of the many local farm shops, bakeries, butchers and fishmongers and sample the best the Island has to offer.

DINOSAUR DISCOVERY

The Isle of Wight is widely regarded as one of the richest areas for dinosaur discovery in Europe, earning it the title “Dinosaur Island”. Have yourself a Jurassic afternoon looking for fossils in hotspots Compton Bay or Yaverland. Or join a guided fossil walk with one of the Island’s dinosaur experts. When it comes to places to watch the sun rise and set, we reckon the Isle of Wight is up there with some of the best. The combination of coastline and sea views, with the impressive cloud formations the Island and its surrounding waters often provide, can make for a spectacular show in the sky. For summer sunsets head to the north coast, and in autumn and winter go for the south.

SHANKLIN CHINE

We’ve asked you to keep Ventnor on your list… and we suggest you keep Shanklin on there too. Start in Shanklin Old Village, known for its thatched cottages and tea gardens, and make your way down Shanklin Chine – a stunning tree-lined gorge that is home to historic exhibitions, waterfalls, exotic flora and fauna and the gateway to Shanklin Beach. In the evenings the Chine is lit by a striking set of illuminations. 11

The history of the Isle of Wight’s music festival stretches back as far as 1968, and it was once reckoned as the largest ever event, after 500,000+ people descended on the Island at Afton Down in 1970! The Isle of Wight Festival in its current guise hosts around 55,000 free-spirited festival goers at Seaclose Park in Newport, but still attracts an eclectic mix of some of the biggest and best names in music. The event, which traditionally takes place at the start of June, kicks off the UK’s busy festival season, and is still seen as one of the most sought after.

Rhythmtree is one of the best family-friendly events you’ll find anywhere in the UK. Known for offering a diverse and rich selection of live music, partnered with entertainment for all the family, this safe and friendly festival at Three Gates Farm, near Calbourne, is an absolute dream. Now in its tenth year, Rhythmtree has forged much of its reputation by focusing on creating a warm and welcoming vibe and atmosphere, with creative and innovative features throughout. Alongside this, they also bring some of the biggest names from world music to their various stages and areas over the weekend.

COWES WEEK (cowesweek.co.uk)

As the largest and longest running annual sailing regatta event in the world, Cowes Week has become an iconic highlight in the British sporting calendar. The event has been going since 1826, only taking a break for two world wars, and 2020’s pandemic. Across the eight days of the event, competitive racing takes centre stage with around 8,000 people competing and up to 100,000 spectators watching. Alongside the main event, many venues and pop-ups around Cowes host a fantastic line-up of entertainment, traditionally concluded with a spectacular firework display!

4. GARLIC FESTIVAL (garlicfestival.co.uk) 5. VENTNOR FRINGE (vfringe.co.uk) A staple in the Island calendar, the unique Isle of Wight Garlic Festival usually takes place on the third weekend in August. There is plenty to do for all ages and interests, with children’s activities, craft stalls, a fun fair, live music, food demonstrations and samplings and, most importantly, a shed load of garlic! With so much garlic grown locally, you can expect to see, taste, feel and smell it everywhere you go – so not recommended for vampires!

This 10-day long event takes over the most southerly town of the island, Ventnor, with pop-up bars, boutique venues and hidden gems, inspired by Edinburgh’s world-famous Fringe. With just one watch-all wristband, you can access all the fantastic, weird and wonderful performances spread across multiple venues throughout the ten days. A wealth of talent can be seen during the course of the festival, varying between live music, impromptu Shakespeare, rap battles, poetry and stand-up comedy.

An event that takes you around the entire Island, travelling on vintage buses, where the bus stops are all pubs serving real ale? Sign us up! Beer & Buses usually takes place in October and sees over 100 different vintage buses travelling to the Island to operate a unique timetable and series of routes for two days. These routes lead to 120 participating venues and pubs, with many of them stopping right outside. If you prefer fresh air to ale, there are also several easily accessed walk recommendations along the routes.

The Electric Woods events bring the majestic woodland of Robin Hill Country Park to life with illuminations several times throughout the year. They often centre around celebrations of various holidays, such as Diwali and Chinese New Year, as well as forming the backdrop for their evening events during the school holidays. With street style food, fire shows, and light and sound displays, every Electric Woods is different, and allows you to fully immerse yourself into a magical land.

Renowned as the world’s largest yacht race, the Round the Island race sees around 1,400 boats and over 16,000 sailors compete in the unique race anti-clockwise around the Isle of Wight. Beginning and ending in Cowes, the race spans around 50 nautical miles and can take anywhere from 3 to 10 hours. Not much of a sailor? It’s a spectacular sight for spectators, with boats passing by many viewing points where you can set up a picnic and make a day of it! Some key vantage points include The Needles Battery, St Catherine’s Point, Culver Down and Ryde Pier.

WALK THE WIGHT (mountbatten.org.uk)

Yes, the Isle of Wight is small enough for you to walk from one side to the other in a day. But before you start brushing off your walking boots, bear in mind the 26.5 mile walk from Bembridge to The Needles isn’t an easy one! Walk the Wight invites walkers to take on the challenge every year, with an incredible 10,000+ taking it on, raising money for Mountbatten Hospice. The views along the way are spectacular, and you’ll travel through several places that are usually inaccessible – you can also opt for half distance walks if you don’t fancy the full challenge.

10. SCOOTER RALLY (visitisleofwight.co.uk)

If you love old school Vespas and vintage Lambrettas (or even shiny new ones), you’ll quite often see them on the Isle of Wight roads in the warmer months. But no time is quite like August Bank Holiday, when over 5000 scooters descend on the Island for the Isle of Wight International Scooter Rally! Scooterists will undoubtedly get the most out of this event, but for the general public the traditional Sunday rideout (from Ryde!) is a real spectacle, with 1000s of riders showing off their scooters along the esplanade before starting off in convoy for a trip around the Island at around lunchtime. 20

In the summer months, the major towns on the Island each host a colourful carnival, with streams of brightly decorated floats making their way up and down the main streets, which are lined by thousands of onlookers. BEST BEACHES FOR FAMILIES - APPLEY The wide sandy shores of Appley Beach are a playground for beachgoers. The tide goes right out, leaving loads of space for games, sunbathing and sandcastle-building, and the gentle incline makes it a great beach for paddling in the sea. There are two large car parks nearby, offering easy access, and a woodland area and park to explore to the rear. For ice creams and refreshments there’s a choice of two cafés at either end of the beach.

FOR SWIMMING - SHANKLIN

There are plenty of options if you’re looking to do a spot of sea swimming. Shanklin Beach is one of the best, with extensive stretches of golden sands minimising your potential rock encounters, and a steady gradient from the shore to the sea, meaning you won’t have to walk for miles before the water reaches above your knees. The waters are highly rated for their cleanliness, and there’s usually a lifeguard on duty during the season, so it’s also one of the safest Island beaches to go for a dip. 22

FOR SUNSETS - GURNARD For the best summer sunsets, head to the beaches on the north side of the Island. Gurnard Beach is one of the finest for watching the sun go down, with its row of well-kept beach huts providing the perfect foreground for a photo. On a warm day, grab an ice cream and take the flat walk along the promenade from nearby Cowes to Gurnard, enjoying the setting sun as you wander.

FOR EXPLORING - FRESHWATER BAY If you’re looking for a beach to visit on a grey day, or prefer skimming stones to sunbathing, you need to drop in at Freshwater Bay. Most of the beach is covered in pebbles, and the steeper inclines lead to some impressive waves on stormy days. The old smugglers’ caves at the eastern end of the bay can be reached at very low tides, but it is easy to get cut off, so only recommended for strong swimmers, or if you’re exploring with a paddleboard or kayak. At the western end of the beach there is some sand, and rockpools at lower tides, and for some impressive views back over the bay, follow the coast path east towards Compton.

Accessed via a long set of steep steps, or alternatively the chairlift from The Needles Landmark attraction above, this sand/shingle beach has views straight over the bay to the iconic Needles rocks and lighthouse. The impressive cliffs are famously made up of coloured sands. 9

malefemale parking utensils dog With luscious golden sands, and a tide that seems to go out forever, Appley is a great beach for sunbathing and paddling in the sea. The mysterious Appley tower stands tall over the sands, and there’s a large wooded area and park nearby, with adventure playground. There are two cafés to choose from at either end of the beach. 13

malefemale parking utensils dog There are 3 beaches to choose from here. “Bembridge Point” runs to the edge of the harbour, with a large sandbank at low tide, “Under Tyne” to the north of the lifeboat station is sandy below the shore line, and good for swimming, and “Forelands”, which curves around the most easterly point of the Island and has rockpools to explore when the tide is out.

parking dog Dinosaur fans often make a beeline for this sandy beach, for the fossilised dino footprints that appear at low tides. There is also a petrified forest further along the beach at Hanover Point, which is visible at low tides. Swimming and sunbathing are popular at Brook, although care should be taken as it can be rocky in parts. 3

COLWELL BAY

malefemale parking utensils Great for swimming and sunsets, Colwell Beach is a sandy beach which is very popular with families and watersports fans. At the back of the beach are rows of brightly decorated beach huts, and a restaurant which attracts many diners by boat in the summer months. 19

COMPTON BAY

malefemale parking Once considered the “locals’ secret”, Compton Bay has in recent years found itself as one of the Island’s most popular with both visitors and locals. A long sandy beach, with rugged sandstone cliffs, and stunning views of the white chalk cliffs. Great waters for swimming and watersports, and good for families, just bear in mind it gets very busy in the summer. 5

It’s safe for swimming, however this beach tends to be at its busiest in July and August, on account of the fact it’s one of the best spots to watch the sailing events.

FRESHWATER BAY

malefemale parking utensils One of the Island’s most picturesque beaches, with two impressive rock stacks standing at the eastern end. It is mainly stone and shingle, with some sand away to the west end, where a rock ledge also appears at low tide, great for rockpooling. Make sure to call into the Freshwater Independent Lifeboat shop for beach essentials, and refreshments. 4

GURNARD

malefemale parking utensils dog One of the Island’s best spots for sunsets, Gurnard also has a small stretch of sand and shingle beach, most notable for its rows of green beach huts to the rear. There’s a village green behind the huts, with a small adventure playground to keep the kids entertained. 7

OSBORNE

malefemale utensils Not many places can boast a “royal” beach, other than the Isle of Wight! You’ll have to pay to enter the house and grounds at Osborne to experience this one, but it’s a great place for a paddle and picnic. There’s a café serving delicious Minghella ice cream at the beach, and they host traditional Punch and Judy shows in the summer. delivering their own unique spin on the traditional day on the beach. 8

RYDE EAST

malefemale parking utensils As with Ryde’s other beaches, the tide goes right out here, leaving lots of open space for relaxing, sunbathing and beach fun. Its golden sands are good for swimming, but we’d recommend waiting for high tide, when you’ve got less of a walk to the shoreline. To the rear of the beach is a playground, traditional amusements, and boating lake, with the main town just a short walk away.

SANDOWN

malefemale parking utensils Long sandy beaches are a feature of the Bay area, and Sandown’s is one of the most popular spots. Instantly recognisable for the traditional pleasure pier halfway along, there are plenty of places to eat, shop, and entertain yourself along this stretch of beach and seafront. Deckchairs and sun loungers are available to hire from beach outlets. 11

SEAGROVE

malefemale dog One of the Island’s most exclusive looking beaches, Seagrove has a number of large seaside properties to its rear. Whilst it’s mainly shingle and stone above the tide line, when the tide is out there’s a large expanse of sand, making it popular for bathing, beach activities and watersports. 16

malefemale parking utensils Just outside East Cowes, along the esplanade, is this shingle and sand beach, with fabulous views back across to West Cowes and its harbour. A good place to visit if you’re looking for a quieter beach in the main season, it’s good for swimming, and has woodland to the rear with some short walks to explore.

SHANKLIN

The seafront and beaches at Shanklin are a throwback to traditional “bucket and spade” holidays, with traditional amusements, crazy golf, ice cream parlours, deckchair and sun lounger hire, and loads of sand for you to set up for the day. Great for swimming and watersports, the beaches get busy in the summer season, but head to the west of the esplanade, and it’s usually quieter. 10

SPRINGVALE

parking A long stretch of sand and shingle, linking Ryde’s beaches to Seaview. Springvale beach is popular for sailing and windsurfing and is a good alternative to some of the busier beaches in the summer if you’re looking to do some sunbathing and swimming. There’s a nice walk through a nature reserve to the back of the beach. 12

ST HELENS

malefemale parking utensils dog A long stretch of sandy beach and dunes, which runs to the entrance of Bembridge Harbour. The old church overlooks the beach at St Helens, with the former golf course of the “Duver” supplying lots of green outdoor space to explore. Watersports and adventure activities are popular here, with an activity centre at the edge of the harbour.

TOTLAND BAY

malefemale parking utensils dog Often a quieter beach than some of its neighbours, due to its predominantly shingle makeup. However, Totland Bay has all the great views of neighbouring Colwell, and if you can wait for the tide to recede enough to reveal the sandier parts, is just as good for swimming. The small pier is (at the time of writing) in the process of being refurbished. 17

VENTNOR

malefemale parking utensils Another of the Island’s traditional seafronts and beaches, albeit with a more recently built bandstand and small harbour for fishing boats at the eastern end. The beach is made up of shingle and sand and has rows of former Victorian bathing machines which are now converted to beach huts. It’s great for swimming, and there are plenty of places to grab an ice cream or snack during a visit. 14

YAVERLAND

malefemale parking utensils Curving round from the southern edge of Culver Down, until it meets Sandown’s main beach, Yaverland is a complete contrast to its more traditional neighbour. With chalk cliffs at one end, and sandstone cliffs to the rear, this sandy beach is more alike to those found on the west side of the Island. Along with being a popular beach for swimming and watersports, it’s also good for fossil hunting.

LOOKING FOR MORE OF A CHALLENGE? WHITECLIFF BAY - One of the Island’s most beautiful beaches, but also one of the toughest to access. Guests of the holiday park above can take advantage of a shuttle service, but otherwise you’ll have to walk from either Bembridge or Culver, then navigate the very steep slope down to the beach. Try to go at low tide, as the beach all but disappears when it’s high. STEEPHILL COVE - A charming cove made up of fishermen’s cottages, colourful beach huts, cosy eateries and a sheltered sand and shingle beach. The waters are great for swimming, and there are rockpools to explore at lower tides. The easiest way to access Steephill Cove is to park at the western end of Ventnor esplanade, and follow the coast path along for approximately 900 metres. BONCHURCH MONK’S BAY - Set in a secluded little bay at the edge of the village of Bonchurch, this beach is a mix of sand and shingle, with rock breakwaters. Formerly a landing spot for smugglers, there are a few houses down by the shore and mainly woodland to the rear. With no parking at the bay, the most scenic way to get here is a mile-long walk from Ventnor seafront. However, there is a small car park on Shore Rd in Bonchurch that gets you closer. WATCOMBE BAY - If you’re a keen kayaker, or have access to a boat, make sure to explore Watcombe Bay on a calm day. Pretty much only accessible from the sea, round to the west of Freshwater Bay, this beach has tall chalk cliffs to the rear and a fabulous outlook into the channel.

ISLE OF...WALKS The Isle of Wight has often been described as a ‘walker’s paradise’ – and that couldn’t be truer. You’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to spend time putting one foot in front of the other. With over 500 miles of footpaths, it’s not hard to find somewhere to go for a walk on the Island. Just keep your eyes open for the footpath signs and you’ll be amazed at how many you’ll spot!

THE TENNYSON TRAIL

The 70-mile Isle of Wight Coastal Path takes you through the ‘Heritage Coast’ and can be split into six smaller sections ranging from 8 to 14 miles each, with each part offering you something unique. Many walkers split the route over a few days, changing accommodation along the way. Note: If you’re going to do this, be sure to book in advance. You’ll find plenty of information online for this famous route. If a full walking holiday is not on your agenda and you just want to experience the most popular part, look between Yarmouth and Brighstone, or Brighstone to Niton. (West Wight). Tip: Drive along the Military Road and simply look out of the window. When you find a view and terrain you like, just pull up in one of the many car parks, lace up, and go!

The Tennyson Trail is a 14-mile walk from Carisbrooke Castle all the way to the Island’s most visited attraction, The Needles. The route passes through some gorgeous areas including Bowcombe Down, Brighstone Forest, Mottistone Down, Brook Down, Afton Down, Freshwater Bay, and Tennyson Down, before taking you to Alum Bay. If you’re up for a long and challenging walk, this one is for you. Expect to climb up the downs, make your way through forests - even pass ancient burial sites. The views along the way? Breath-taking.

VENTNOR DOWNS

This rewarding walk delivers stunning scenery and plenty of landscape variety. Visitors can drive to the top of the downs, where there are several car parks leading down to level footpaths, or, for more of a challenge, start/park in the town (Ventnor) and make your way up into the hills from there. Before turning around, refuel at The Crab Shed (Steephill Cove) or The Seapot (Wheelers Bay Rd).

If seeing a Red Squirrel is on your Island bucket list, take a walk through Bouldnor Forest Nature Reserve for your best chance at spotting these famous critters. EXPLORE NORTH Encompassing a shoreline that stretches along the Solent channel, the wider parts of the River Medina, and Wootton Creek, the North of the Island is extremely popular for sailing and boating. You’ll also discover some of the Island’s most significant history here, with the world’s largest sailing regatta at Cowes, and Queen Victoria’s royal palace by the sea at Osborne.

WHY GO? Less than a mile to the west of Cowes is the village of Gurnard. The waters here are very popular for sailing and watersports, but undoubtedly one of the most striking features of Gurnard (and in particular the waterfront) is its jaw-dropping sunsets. Park along the esplanade on a clear evening, find yourself a great spot to watch (behind the beach huts is a great photo spot), and kick back and enjoy the show If you’re stopping for a bit longer, the Woodvale (hotelcowes.co.uk) serves freshly cooked food and has great views out across the Solent.

WEST COWES EXPLORE NORTH

WHY GO? The vibrant streets of West Cowes contain a mixture of boutique-style shops, traditional pubs and inns, and trendy cafés and restaurants. During the sailing season you’ll find the harbour and waterfront a hive of action. Cowes Week, which takes place every year in early August, draws large crowds to watch the competition out on the water, and enjoy the festival atmosphere in the town, with entertainment, live music events, and a grand finale fireworks display.

FEELING HUNGRY?

You’ll be spoiled for choice eating out in West Cowes, just make sure to book ahead where you can, as the independent eateries throughout the town get very busy in the tourist season. For sea views and sunsets, try the New Holmwood Restaurant (newholmwoodhotel.co.uk) which is located right on the seafront, just out of the main town. For delicious British food, cocktails and casual dining, Gastronomy (gastronomycowes.co.uk) on the main street is worth a look, while for classic takeaway Fish & Chips, you should check out Corries Cabin on Shooters Hill.

TOP TIP – WALKING & CYCLING

If sailing’s not your thing, there’s still plenty to explore. There are some great routes for easy walking and cycling from West Cowes. Head along Cowes Parade, past the town’s shingle beaches, and along to Gurnard for fabulous Solent views and stunning sunsets. In the other direction, follow the cycle path along the Medina estuary, bringing you through a nature reserve, and all the way south into the Island’s capital town of Newport. 56

EAST COWES

WHY GO? Separated from the “west” by the River Medina, and connected by a chain link ferry, East Cowes is perhaps best known for Queen Victoria’s royal palace at Osborne (english-heritage.org.uk/osborne). One of the most popular attractions on the Island, Osborne offers something for almost any visitor; with the house and its many collections, and extensive grounds and gardens, which include the royal beach (with traditional Punch and Judy shows in the summer).

WOOTTON BRIDGE

WHY GO? The village of Wootton is found midway between the two major towns of Ryde and Newport and is most recognisable for its tidal creek, and large mill pond, which sit either side of its namesake bridge. There are several great walks in this area, one of which takes you through to Woodside Bay, the location of the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival. Over 100,000 festival-goers descended on the village for this event, which was headlined by Bob Dylan.

Set back from the main road into Ryde, and surrounded by woodland, is one of the Island’s most tranquil spots. Free to visit, and open all year round, Quarr Abbey’s centrepiece is an active Benedictine monastery, encircled by extensive grounds that include a visitor centre, art gallery, farm shop and café, woodland walks and more. Call in and feed the friendly pigs, or grab yourself a tasty Quarr Abbey Ale and just relax!

Elsewhere in East Cowes you’ll find the town’s beach, which is less of a tourist trap than many of the others, so worth seeking out if you prefer a quieter option. There are also great Solent views from all along the Esplanade in this area.

TOP TIP - QUEEN VICTORIA’S CHURCH

A short distance outside East Cowes, in the nearby village of Whippingham, you’ll find the beautiful St Mildred’s Church, which was built for Queen Victoria, to Prince Albert’s design. EXPLORE CENTRAL In the middle of the Island you’ll find the county town of Newport, which is surrounded by a series of smaller villages with impressive downland stretching away to the south and east.

WHY GO? As the largest town on the Island, Newport boasts the most extensive network of shopping streets and open spaces, with plenty of restaurants and cafés in which to hang out and grab a coffee or bite to eat. Shopping is a popular pastime here, with a mix of well-known chain stores, and smaller independent shops to explore. If you’re looking to pick up some local treats during your visit, seek out The Little Nook (thelittlenook.co.uk), which stocks a wide range of local produce, crafts and gifts. Also worth a look is Peach (peach-veganzerowaste.co.uk), a recently opened “zero waste” store, that caters for vegan diners in its cosy café.

The main town doesn’t offer much in the way of things to see, other than St Thomas’ church in the main square; but a short walk from the main high street will bring you to the Quay Arts (quayarts.org), with art galleries to visit, a craft shop selling locally made gifts, and a good-sized café bar with riverside terrace. A short drive from the centre is the impressive Carisbrooke Castle (english-heritage.org.uk/carisbrooke) where Charles I was imprisoned before his execution. The grounds outside the walls of the castle are free of charge to explore. Every year, in June, 60,000 festival-goers descend on Newport for the Isle of Wight Festival. The event takes place at Seaclose Park, and outside of festival time you can explore the park and arboretum where much of the festival takes place. There’s a great river walk in this area, that runs along the bank of the River Medina, along to Island Harbour, with the remains of paddle steamer ship “Ryde Queen” to look out for en route.

TOP TIP – MONKEYING AROUND

The number one “thing to do” on the Isle of Wight according to Tripadvisor reviews is, more often than not, the fantastic Monkey Haven (monkeyhaven.org), just outside Newport. This primate rescue centre has won several high-profile awards, with its collection of happy animals, knowledgeable staff, and an immaculate park. Once you’ve met the monkeys, head up the road to Briddlesford Farm (briddlesford.co.uk), to sample a tasty menu of fresh seasonal food from the Island’s farmers and growers at the Bluebell Café. WHY GO? The picturesque village of Godshill is home to much of the Island’s older architecture and the “chocolate box” cottages that have adorned the front of many a postcard over the years. The deceptively large emporium of shops, gardens and coffee shop that make up the Old Smithy will likely be the first thing you’ll see after parking your car. This will bring you out onto the main street, which is furnished with traditional tearooms and quirky shops. It’s well worth checking out the delightful Godshill Model Village (modelvillagegodshill. co.uk), which depicts Godshill, and the nearby resort of Shanklin in perfect miniature, surrounded by award-winning gardens.

FEELING HUNGRY?

With so many tearooms, the obvious choice in Godshill would be to indulge in a traditional cream tea. However, tucked away along Church Hollow you’ll find Tansy’s Pantry (tansyspantry. co.uk), a recently opened vegan restaurant and café that has earned many plaudits with its menu of freshly made plant-based delights. For more gastropub-style food, try the Taverners (thetavernersgodshill.co.uk) on the main street, for fresh locally sourced ingredients, served in charming surroundings. Nearby Chocolate Island (islelovechocolate.co.uk) is a must-visit for visitors with a sweet tooth, with many of their chocolate creations made on site. You can burn off some of the inevitable calories with a walk up to the medieval All Saints Church, which sits at the top of a hill overlooking the rest of the village.

WHY GO? When you hear reference to “The Downs” on the Isle of Wight, it usually refers to the area made up by Arreton, Mersley, Ashey and Brading downs in the centre of the Island. There’s a great open top bus tour you can take during the main season, which will show you the best of the views, which stretch all around the Island. The valleys surrounding the downland are known for growing produce, and also contain a number of great things to see and do. At Arreton Barns (arretonbarns.co.uk) you’ll discover a whole range of local art and crafts makers, sweet and farm shops, and a shipwreck heritage centre, as well as a cosy traditional pub. Further east, along the Arreton Valley, is the famous Garlic Farm (thegarlicfarm.co.uk) which is free to explore, and a garlic-lover’s paradise. To the north of the main downs road, set in the opposite valley is Robin Hill (robin-hill.com), with 88 acres of stunning woodland, open countryside and family attractions.

TOP TIP – ARRETON VALLEY

If you like exploring on foot, a great way to see the best of the central Island is to follow the Bembridge Trail, which runs from Newport all the way through to Bembridge on the east coast. This will lead you across the downs for the panoramic views, and also down through the Arreton Valley, past, or near to many of the main places to visit. 64

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway (iwsteamrailway.co.uk) runs from Wootton through to the outskirts of Ryde, with their main station and visitor centre located in the village of Havenstreet. To get the full experience of Island railways, catch the regular train from Ryde Esplanade to Smallbrook Station, where you’ll pick up the steam train to carry you to Havenstreet in style.

Along the seafront, behind the main beaches, you’ll find traditional amusements and the boating lake (with swan pedalos in the summer). Here you can also take a “flight” over to the historic city of Portsmouth on the world’s only remaining passenger hovercraft. Continue along the esplanade to Appley Beach and Park, to see the mysterious Appley Tower, and try your hand at recreational tree climbing with Goodleaf (goodleaf.co.uk).

Ryde has an abundance of places to satisfy most appetites, with restaurants for various cuisines lining the town’s main streets, and traditional holiday fodder to takeaway along the esplanade. WHY GO? Much of Seaview’s reputation as an upmarket Edwardian resort was built on its panoramic sea views and great sandy beaches, and these are still two of its biggest assets.

WHY GO? St Helens has a sandy beach, in the shadow of a ruined church, and the former Victorian golf course that forms the Duver.

It’s popular with tourists looking for a true “escape”, and in the summer months the village becomes a busy centre for sailing and watersports. The beach of Springvale offers some of the best views, straight across the Solent to Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower, and the famous Solent forts, whilst following the coast path takes you around the village and onto the more sheltered Seagrove Beach.

There are some good stops for food in the Seaview area, including the award winning restaurant at The Seaview Hotel (seaviewhotel.co.uk). Seafood fans, with a love of dining al fresco, should check out the unique Beach Hut (isleofwightbeachcafe. co.uk), which serves tasty seafood platters and cake in equal measure, with some of the best sea views you’ll find.

The three beaches, Lane End, the Ledge and Bembridge Beach, are very popular for exploring with contrasting coastlines, rock pools and stunning panoramic views out to sea. With its substantial harbour Bembridge is also a very popular sailing destination.

BRADING

WHY GO? Park up at the top of town near the Norman church of St Mary’s and take a wander along the main street to appreciate some of Brading’s interesting heritage, including the slightly gory remnant of the Bull Ring in front of the town hall. Just outside the town you’ll find Brading Roman Villa (bradingromanvilla.org.uk), which offers a comprehensive history of the days of Roman occupation on the Island.

CULVER DOWN

For many years an important military zone closed to the public, Culver is now easily accessed on foot or by car from the main Bembridge to Brading Road. There are still some remnants of its history with the substantial Bembridge Fort (nationaltrust.org.uk), and a World War II anti-aircraft battery. Spectacular views from Culver open out across the whole Bay area of Sandown and Shanklin, or look back over Whitecliff Bay and Bembridge.

If you like exploring nature, take a wander out through the Brading marshlands, where you’ll get great views of what was one of the Isle of Wight’s main ports until the 16th Century.

On Brading’s high street you’ll find a number of great places to eat. New to the area is the recently relocated Hungry Bear (hungrybear.online) which has taken over part of the once legendary Brading Waxworks building. WHY GO? Famed for its long stretches of golden sandy beach, and traditional pleasure pier, Sandown is another of the Island’s principal Victorian resorts. The main town beach stretches all the way along the esplanade to Yaverland, where the contrasting sand curves to the edges of Culver Down. There’s plenty of scope for watersports along all these beaches in the summer. In addition to the pier, which houses amusements, soft play, bowling and mini golf, Sandown offers a wide range of things to do. These include the Isle of Wight Zoo (isleofwightzoo.com), where you’ll find one of the Island’s quirkiest attractions, the National Museum of Poo! Nearby is an interactive dinosaur museum, and Sandham Gardens (sandhamgardens.com), with go-karting, crazy golf, and more for kids.

You’ll find plenty of beach cafés and ice cream stops along the front, perfect for warm (and cold) day refreshment. Head east along the main esplanade and you’ll find The Bandstand (thebandstandsandown.co.uk), where you can enjoy great coffee and food with panoramic sea views of the Bay area, set in an award-winning architectural conversion of Sandown’s old bandstand.

TOP TIP / ONE TO EXPLORE

Take a stroll along the sea defences from Sandown esplanade, and you can walk all the way to the village of Shanklin. There’s a couple of beach cafés along the way, which are worth checking out, as well as a watersports centre. If you’re looking for a quieter beach in the summer, which still has all the sand and views of Sandown and Shanklin, check out Lake Beach halfway between the two.

EXPLORE SOUTH On this side of the Island the traditional resort towns, with their long stretches of esplanade and beach, meet the more rugged landscapes of the West Wight. Leave the busy tourist trap of Shanklin seafront behind, and just a 20-minute drive later you could be gazing out at the striking St Catherine’s lighthouse surrounded by nothing but the Island’s outstanding natural beauty.

SHANKLIN

WHY GO? The resort town of Shanklin is split into two distinctive areas; the Old Village, with its pretty streets and thatched roofs, and the newer town, from which the road to the esplanade snakes down the hill to the seafront and sandy beaches. Both beaches get busy in the Summer, but “Small Hope Beach” to the east is sometimes quieter.

If you’re browsing the shops during your visit, be sure to look out Jurassic Jim’s Fossil Shop (jurassicjim.com) for real dinosaur artifacts and minerals, and Cavanagh & Baker (cavanagh-baker.co.uk) the “Island Made Emporium” for a great selection of local gifts and foodstuff. There are more traditional beach shops (for last-minute bucket and spade purchases) at Shanklin Seafront (shanklinseafront.co.uk) where you’ll also find adventure golf, indoor play, amusement arcades and much more to keep the kids entertained.

In amongst some of the oldest dwellings on the Island, at the Old Village, you’ll find a collection of traditional tearooms and cosy gift shops. A short walk away are the pretty Rylstone Gardens (with pitch and putt in the summer) and the entrance to one of the Isle of Wight’s oldest, and most understated attractions, Shanklin Chine (shanklinchine.co.uk). The Chine is beautiful at any time of day, but really comes into its own after dark, when its stunning landscapes, waterfalls and plant life are brought to life by magical illuminations.

FEELING HUNGRY?

As with many of the towns on the Island, there are plenty of places to eat in Shanklin, depending on what you’re looking for. If you want sea views, you can’t get much better than Fisherman’s Cottage (fishermanscottageshanklin.co.uk) at the foot of Chine, whose outdoor terrace runs up to the back of the beach. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, Salix Beach Café (thesalixcafe.co.uk) on Small Hope Beach serves Island Roasted Coffee, and delicious breakfasts and lunches, with views straight out over the bay. BONCHURCH EXPLORE SOUTH EXPLORE EAST

WHY GO? Steeped in both history and its unique geography, the village of Bonchurch has a certain “magical air” to it, unlike anywhere else on the Isle of Wight. Its notable one-time residents include none other than Charles Dickens, and in the late 19th century it was a fashionable spot for writers and artists. At the centre of Bonchurch is a large spring-fed pond, with a selection of beautiful old cottages and buildings running along the main village road.

TOP TIP - DEVIL’S CHIMNEY

Just outside Bonchurch is the Devil’s Chimney, one of the Island’s hidden gems. The walk through here is not for the faint hearted, as it descends into the landslips below down a steep set of stairs in a narrow gap in the rock. The narrow path weaves past small caves into thick woodland, until you reach the main coast path, which can be used to head back into Bonchurch via Monk’s Bay or along to Shanklin. St Boniface Church is nearby, parts of which date back to the 11th Century, and a short walk down from here brings you to Monk’s Bay, a small sand and shingle beach with rockpools to explore at low tide. The Bonchurch Inn (bonchurch-inn.co.uk) further up the village is a delightful old pub, with a courtyard garden and extensive menu of home-cooked Italian cuisine.

WHY GO? As Isle of Wight towns go, Ventnor is somewhat of an enigma. Resting on a steep incline in the shelter of St Boniface Down (the highest point on the Island) it enjoys its own “microclimate”, which brings warmer temperatures, and historically made it a place to relax and recover. Relaxation is still high on

the agenda, but the town has in more recent years become one of the cultural hotspots of the Island, with events such as Ventnor Fringe (vfringe.co.uk) now a mainstay on the Isle of Wight calendar.

The warmer climes give the plant life and wildlife a more tropical edge, which is perfectly demonstrated at the nearby Ventnor Botanic Gardens (botanic.co.uk), and the beach and seafront (complete with Isle of Wight shaped paddling pool and cascade gardens and waterfall) are very popular in the main season.

TOP TIP - ISLE OF WIGHT DONKEY SANCTUARY

One of the Isle of Wight’s best free days out is a trip to the Donkey Sanctuary (iowdonkeysanctuary.org), just outside Wroxall. The sanctuary has over 100 donkeys and horses in residence, in 55 acres of countryside, with a gift shop and café on site. Visitor comments always echo how well cared for the animals are, and if you enjoy your visit and want to help towards their upkeep you can either “adopt a donkey” or make a donation. 82

FEELING HUNGRY?

The vintage clothing stores in the town have been known to draw celebrity shoppers in the past, whilst there is a great collection of independent boutiques to browse, such as bespoke jewellers Honeybourne Jewellery (honeybournejewellery.com).

Ventnor has recently transformed into something of a foodie destination, with several of the Island’s top-rated restaurants positioned on the seafront and main streets. You can enjoy an elegant afternoon tea at The Royal Hotel (royalhoteliow.co.uk), or sample locally caught seafood with views out to sea from the Smoking Lobster (smokinglobster.co.uk). For more stunning beachside views try the Spyglass Inn (thespyglass.com) and at Ventnor Haven you can takeaway a portion of the Isle of Wight’s “national dish”, which is a delicious serving of “Crab on Chips”.

The beautifully presented Ventnor Park (ventnorpark.co.uk) is great for exploring, with live music in the summer, a putting green and a free outdoor gym overlooking the sea. The Fringe usually takes place at the start of the summer and is the brainchild of the creative team behind Ventnor Exchange (ventnorexchange.co.uk), a theatre, craft beer bar, and record store all in one, built in the old post office.

ST LAWRENCE & NITON EXPLORE SOUTH EXPLORE EAST

WHY GO? The Undercliff area, that includes the villages of St Lawrence and Niton, is great if you like to explore rugged coastline and hidden coves. A landslip in between the two has made access tricky, however by following the coast path from Ventnor you will discover the small bays of Woody and Binnel. On the Niton end, there are several walks that take you around St Catherine’s Lighthouse (another photographer’s favourite), and from here you can walk back to Castlehaven and Reeth Bay.

A short drive from Niton is Blackgang, where you’ll find the UK’s oldest theme park, and maker of many childhood memories, Blackgang Chine (blackgangchine.com). On the downland above the park stands St Catherine’s Oratory (also known as the “Pepperpot”) which was the original lighthouse that covered this area of coast in medieval times.

EXPLORE WEST The West Wight is very different to the rest of the Island. Largely undeveloped during the 20th century tourism boom, the west side remains relatively untouched, with a scattering of attractive rural villages throughout its countryside, much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Yarmouth, the only surviving town on this side of the Island, is one of the smallest in the UK. The beaches of the West Wight are generally more rural, with eroding cliffs creating spectacular backdrops.

BRIGHSTONE & SURROUNDING AREA

WHY GO? One of the bigger villages in the west is Brighstone. It is largely made up of traditional farmhouses and thatched cottages, and has a medieval church dating back to the 12th century. Housed in some of those thatched cottages are a small museum and library, and the local newsagents, which surprisingly doubles as a cosy café and shop serving and selling Island produce and crafts. At the edge of Brighstone, along the iconic Military Road, is Dinosaur Expeditions (dinosaurexpeditions.co.uk), which offers dinosaur and fossil exhibitions at its farm and local fossil hunting trips.

There are traditional pubs aplenty in this area, with The Crown at Shorwell (complete with extensive garden and trout stream) and Sun Inn (characterinns.co.uk/the-sun-inn) at Hulverstone both worth a look if you’re in need of refreshment.

TOP TIP - ISLE OF WIGHT MOUNTAIN BIKE CENTRE

Whilst it rarely receives much press, the Isle of Wight Mountain Bike Centre (isleofwightmountainbikecentre.com) is often spoken of as one of the best in the UK by mountain bike pros. Set on Cheverton Farm, near Shorwell, they’ve created an ever-expanding trail network to challenge varying abilities of rider, with plans to extend this even further in the future.

In nearby Mottistone, the grand manor house at the centre opens its tranquil gardens to the public, and from here it’s just a short walk onto the downs to the mysterious Neolithic “Longstone”.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Many of the villages in West Wight have their own pub at the centre, where you can enjoy traditional pub classics, and a warm welcome. The Blacksmiths (blacksmithsiow. co.uk), just outside Calbourne on the main Newport road, is a shining example of this; highly rated for its food, with stunning panoramic views out across the north of the Island and the Solent. WHY GO? The expansive village of Freshwater is one of the more popular in West Wight for visitors. At the centre there is a small high street with a few independent shops and cafés, with a supermarket at the edge of the village, selling a good range of Isle of Wight produce. There are two churches in Freshwater, which are both worth a look: the medieval All Saints in the main village, and the pretty thatched church of St Agnes in Freshwater Bay.

The Bay itself consists of a pebble beach, with chalk cliffs and impressive rock stacks at the eastern end, and some sand and a rock ledge to the west, which make it good for rockpooling. There are caves in the cliffs just past the ends of the beach in either direction, but these are difficult to reach on foot, unless you book onto an adrenaline fuelled Coasteering experience with IOW Adventure Activities (www.adventureisleofwight.com).

FEELING HUNGRY?

There are a few cafés that are worth checking out for breakfast and lunches around the village and Bay area, including the inviting Piano Café (thepianocafe.co.uk) near St Agnes Church. If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, or an evening meal, the Red Lion (redlion-freshwater.co.uk) is always spoken highly of by visitors and locals, and The Cow (thecowco.com) just outside the village, has won multiple awards for its tasty burgers.

At the edge of the village, Freshwater Golf Club (freshwaterbaygolfclub.co.uk) extends up onto Afton Down for some of the “best views with a game of golf” you’re likely to find. The 360-degree panoramas include the former Isle of Wight Festival site, which in 1970 attracted over 500,000 people to the Island! You can discover more about the festival in a dedicated exhibition at nearby Dimbola Lodge (dimbola.co.uk), which was once the house of celebrated photography pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron.To the east of Freshwater, along the coast, you’ll find one of the Island’s best beaches at Compton Bay. It gets busy here in the main season, but Brook Beach further along the coast is a good alternative if you’re struggling to find a spot on the sand.

WHY GO? The Needles is the Isle of Wight’s most iconic landmark, made up of a row of striking chalk stacks that rise up from the sea beneath, and an equally impressive red and white striped lighthouse that protects seafarers from the rocks. You can visit them by several different means, all of which vary according to your interests.

There is a boat trip run by Needles Pleasure Cruises (needlespleasurecruises.co.uk), that runs from Alum Bay beach, that’ll give you the perfect “up-close” view, whilst for thrill-seekers, you can switch that up to a fast rib which will take you right round the lighthouse, to discover a hidden cove on the other side.

For families, The Needles Landmark Attraction (theneedles.co.uk) offers various rides and attractions, as well as the famous chairlift over the cliffs and down to the beach. The Needles Old and New Batteries (nationaltrust.org.uk) offer an alternative view of the landmark from above, and for heritage buffs, a window into the wartime history of the area, including the secret rocket testing site nearby.

TOP TIP - WALK TO THE NEEDLES

One of the most spectacular walks on the Island is the path that runs up and along Tennyson Down. It’s a steep climb from Freshwater village up to Tennyson monument, but once you’ve completed the ascent it is relatively easy going all the way to the Island’s most recognisable landmark, The Needles, and the views will take your breath away (much like the first part of the walk!)

WHY GO? The historic port town of Yarmouth sits at the entrance of the River Yar and includes some of the oldest architecture on the Island. It is popular for sailing, with a busy harbour located at the mouth of the river estuary. Visitors can get great views of the Solent, and the Island itself from the Grade II listed pier; look out for the names of the sponsors that pay for its upkeep, which are engraved in the

boards.Yarmouth is a small town but has some great independent gift shops and galleries to explore amongst its streets, including the unique My Funky Bags (myfunkybags.com) whose colourful collections are all crafted from recycled plastic bottles. The 16th century Yarmouth Castle is well worth a look; what it lacks in size it makes up for in setting and is a great place to sit for a picnic and enjoy sea views on a warm day.

You’ve got plenty of choice for food in Yarmouth, with some great cafés and pubs in the town, as well as a few more specialist restaurants for specific cuisines. Gossips Café (facebook.com/thegossipscafe) at the end of the pier is always a visitor favourite for breakfasts and hot and cold lunches, with views out to the Solent and mainland. The unique Off The Rails (offtherailsyarmouth.co.uk) on the outskirts of town serves a mix of freshly cooked light and more substantial bites, from the comfort of a beautifully converted railway station. They’re incredibly dog friendly, and even have a menu dedicated to them! Just a short drive from Yarmouth, Tapnell Farm (tapnellfarm.com) plays host to a much-loved farm park and restaurant, with various other activities that include the recently opened Isle of Wight Aqua Park. If you like meeting animals, West Wight Alpacas (westwightalpacas.co.uk) in Wellow offers alpaca and llama walks around their farm, and delicious artisan pizzas in its café. Another hidden gem is Fort Victoria (fort-victoria.co.uk) to the west of Yarmouth. In addition to a 1km-long stretch of beach and country park to explore, you’ll also find a series of varied attractions, set up in the arches of an old Victorian sea fort. A short distance along the coast are the popular sands of Colwell Bay, which is great for long family days on the beach.

TOP TIP - NEWTOWN NATURE RESERVE

If you like outdoor spaces, wildlife, and exploration, you should schedule a stop at Newtown during your Isle of Wight visit. Once the medieval port for the Island, Newtown (which still has a town hall, despite there no longer being a town) is now a National Nature Reserve (nationaltrust. org.uk). There are several walks you can take through the varied habitats on the reserve, which include the picturesque harbour, woodland and meadows, and a whole host of birds and wildlife. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

You know your beloved pooch is in for a good holiday when you board the Red Funnel ferry to find a dedicated pet lounge, complete with bowls of water, and tasty treats. Dogs don’t need a ferry ticket, and there’s no charge for them to travel, so bringing them to the Island is hassle-free.

Dog walks on the Island give you an opportunity to explore breathtaking countryside, coastal paths and woodland trails. For easy exploring, we highly recommend the series of flat walks that follow the former Island railway lines, with one of the highlights running from Yarmouth to Freshwater. Start at the main Yarmouth car park off River Road and follow the path south along the shoreline of the estuary, past the old mill. From here you’ll join the former railway track, for a relaxed countryside stroll through to Freshwater, with river views almost all the way.

CARS: Most of the Island is made up of narrow country roads (all accompanied by amazing views!) so for safety and enjoyment, take it easy when driving them. While not prohibitive, the narrow roads are a challenge for larger vehicles, so it’s highly advisable to plan your arrival and departure from the Island during daylight hours if you’re bringing a motorhome or towing a caravan. You may also encounter horse riders and cyclists on Island roads. Remember that horses (and cyclists) scare easily; so please, go slow, have patience and give space.

TRAINS: The Island’s main train line is currently undergoing renovation, which should be complete by summer 2021. The train stops at: Ryde Pier head, Ryde Esplanade (where the bus station is), Ryde St John’s Road, Smallbrook Junction, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. TAXIS: There’s no Uber network on the Island as of this writing; but the good news is the Island has many taxi services. Have dinner plans at 19:00 and need a taxi? Call WELL ahead and schedule a booking. Don’t leave it to 18:30 as you could be surprised at demand during peak visitor periods. The Island also has a number of water taxi terminals – with popular depatures from Cowes, Bembridge and Yarmouth.

ELECTRIC TRAVEL: There are lots of places to hire bicycles, including e-bikes. The IOW Council is currently testing e-scooters and these can be found dotted around towns and are free to use. 1885 Company ventures into operating tug boats and buys the New Southampton Steam Towing Company.

1959 MV Carisbrooke Castle, began service as the company’s first ever purpose-built car ferry.

1940 Red Funnel vessels assist with Operation Dynamo, helping evacuate nearly 6,000 from the beaches of Dunkirk.

1912 Company’s tugs assist the SS Titanic out of the Southampton Docks on her doomed maiden voyage.

SAVING LIVES

At Sea

Red Funnel’s 2021 Charity of the Year is the Isle of Wight Independent Lifeboats. This collective of Freshwater Independent Lifeboat, Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Ryde Inshore Rescue are on call 24/7, keeping visitors and residents safe while they’re on the beach or out on the water.

WHAT DO THEY DO? The three stations cover 35 of the 67 miles of Island Coastline, and also assist the emergency services and Search and Rescue.

HOW DO THEY KEEP US SAFE? On average the three stations receive around 80 callouts a year. These include walkers being cut off by the sea tides, drifting watercraft / inflatables, watersports accidents, mechanical failures on boats and more.

WHY DO THEY NEED OUR HELP?

WHO VOLUNTEERS? There are 103 dedicated volunteers from the Island across the three stations, this includes everyone from crew and maintenance to fundraising and admin.

Three Stations, One Mission

As independents, the stations rely on public donations to operate, and receive zero funding from the government or the RNLI. It can cost over £120,000 a year for basic operation, building maintenance and equipment across the three stations. To equip just one crew member costs nearly £2000!
