Dear Friends, We are pleased and excited to welcome you to our 9th Annual Bull & Female Sale – More Than a Bull! Our goal is to offer each customer a complete genetic program along with support services. Our success is measured by the profitability of the commercial producers and purebred breeders who use Red Hill genetics. The cattle have been selected to improve economically relevant traits in order to optimize the practicality and profitability for our commercial customers. We continue to focus our program on 3 principles – 1) offering cattle documented as breed leaders for production traits, 2) offering cattle that are phenotypically pleasing to the customer, and 3) offering services to help our customers improve profitability. We manage our cattle like a commercial herd and ask our cows to perform with minimal inputs. We attempt to manage our cattle so they go to their new homes and thrive in new environments. We hope you will find time to join us on Friday prior to the sale for our cowherd tours and “Cattle Talk” in the evening. The Friday evening presentation will feature Clint Berry. Clint will discuss the many opportunities for marketing feeder cattle and specifically marketing with Superior Livestock. A major reward of the seedstock business is the opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of our customers and fellow breeders. You are always welcome to visit our farm to study our cattle and their production records. We intend to collect the most comprehensive data set in the industry - - from birth to rail to cowherd records - - and share all the information with you, the customer. Please review our catalog and contact us if you have questions. We hope to see you on March 14th and 15th! Bart, Sarah and Ty Jones Gordon and Susan Jones

Red Hill Cooperator Breeders Coyote Hills Farm - Coyote Hills is owned by the Dal Clark Family, Scottsville, KY. The Clark family has been in the Red Angus business since 2006. The Coyote Hills cattle are heavily influenced by Buffalo Creek and Red Hill genetics. The addition of these cows has added unique genetics for Red Hill customers. We are fortunate to lease the Coyote Hills farm and manage their cows as a part of the Red Hill herd. Buffalo Creek Red Angus - The name Buffalo Creek is forever synonymous with quality Red Angus cattle. After the Buffalo Creek dispersal, Gini Chase asked if we would manage some of her personal cows. We were excited she would send these cows to Red Hill. We enjoy working with Gini, as it is always good to get wisdom from a master breeder. Jack and Gini have been great supporters of our program, and we are honored to have these cows at Red Hill. South Fork Farms - David Billingsley runs a 75-cow herd on 250 acres in Barren County, KY. The 107-acre homestead has been operated by David’s family since 1945. David is a charter member of the Barren County Cattlemen’s Association, and he is a member of the Barren Beef Group. David’s role with the Beef Group has been identifying superior genetics for the group. David has developed an excellent Angus - based cow herd, and it seemed a natural fit for David to become a Red Hill Cooperator to produce SimAngus bulls. This is the first offering of David’s bulls at Red Hill.

HILL FARMS — 2014 — Developmental Duplication
Developmental Duplication (DD) is the latest among several genetic defects that have been discovered in recent years in the cattle seedstock industry. With the advancement of DNA technology, it has become possible to identify abnormalities in cattle that in earlier years would have most likely been classified as congenital abnormalities or “birth defects”. Such conditions in the past would have been ignored unless a high frequency of calves were identified with the defect. The first major genetic defect identified in cattle was dwarfism which occurred in both Angus and Hereford cattle more than fifty years ago. In the 1970’s, the condition called syndactly or “mule foot” was identified in several breeds of cattle. After studying the inheritance of these conditions, it was determined that both conditions were homozygous recessives, meaning that an affected calf must have received the abnormal gene from a phenotypically normal appearing sire and dam. These parents were genetically heterozygous or “carriers” of the deleterious gene. By carefully studying pedigrees and only using animals with no known “carriers” of these genetic defects in the pedigrees, breeders were able to essentially eliminate these two conditions from the cattle population. This process of eliminating these defects was costly and time consuming and did not allow the “carrier” animals to be used to capture their genetic value. The terms “clean” and “dirty” pedigreed cattle became common in the beef industry. Cattle with no known “carrier” animals in the pedigree were referred to as “clean” pedigree cattle and those with a known “carrier” in the pedigree were referred to as “dirty” pedigree cattle. The “dirty” pedigree cattle were usually devalued to commercial prices. Developmental Duplication refers to a condition that allows for a fetus to develop an additional leg that may appear on various areas of the body. If “carrier” bulls are mated to “carrier” cows, the expected frequency of calves with the DD condition would be 25%. Because the frequency of affected calves appears to be lower than 25%, some questions have been raised about the mode of inheritance of this condition. However, the condition does now appear to be a simple recessive condition inherited in the same manner as dwarfism and mule foot. The exceptions must be that the extra “legs” are quite small and do not break the hide, or some other tissues in the body may be duplicated. Consequently, calves with tiny legs or other tissue duplications under the skin may appear normal. Obviously this condition has much less economic significance than the lethal “curly calf” or “waterhead” conditions that were recently discovered in Angus cattle. The cattle industry is fortunate that Dr. Jon Beever at the University of Illinois has discovered the DNA sequence and developed a low-cost test for DD and other important genetic defects. At Red Hill Farms, all potential “carriers” of DD have been identified. Any bulls in this sale that are “carriers” of DD have been noted in the sale catalog as DDC. These bulls are recommended for use in commercial herds that have not used “carrier” bulls in the past. If you have questions about the pedigrees of bulls and potential “carrier” status of bulls used in your herd in the past, we will welcome the opportunity to assist you in making that determination. The animals that were tested “clean” of DD are denoted in the catalog as DDF. The long-term goal at Red Hill Farms is to remove the DD gene from the herd; however, we plan to salvage the outstanding genetic potential of some of these “carrier” animals by using DNA testing on their progeny. ABOUT THE CATALOG for RED ANGUS LOTS Cat: An animal’s category under the Red Angus recordation system. This is a registration structure that classifies an animal according to its percentage of Red Angus genes.
Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
1A -
Purebred 100% Red Angus with no disqualifying characteristics (i.e. black, scurs, white in front of navel)
Milk (MILK): predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves.
1B -
87% to 99% Red Angus, with no disqualifying characteristics.
2-
1A and 1B animals that are disqualified from those categories because of characteristics described above.
Total Maternal (TM): predicts the rancher’s actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal’s daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf’s weaning weight EPD.
3-
Less than 87% Red Angus gene content. PERFORMANCE VALUES
BW: The animal’s adjusted birth weight. A lower BW Ratio corresponds to lighter birth weights. 205 WW: The animal’s adjusted weaning weight. 365 YW: The animal’s adjusted yearling weight. ADG: Average Daily Gain from weaning to yearling. ADG Ratio is a Red Hill Farms ratio, grouping cattle by sex. Scrotal: Scrotal measurements are actual measurements in centimeters taken on 2/13/14. Frame Score: A convenient way to describe skeletal size of an animal based on the animal’s hip height adjusted to 365 days of age. With appropriate height growth curves, most animals will maintain the same frame score throughout their life while the actual hip height increases with age. However, with some animals that mature earlier or later than average, the score will change. Frame scores have been calculated twice on animals selling. The frame score listed is an average of the 2 values. %IMF & REA: Adjusted measurements taken on 9/10/13 for fall animals and 1/20/14 for spring yearlings. DAM MPPA: Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA) - An estimate of a cow’s future productivity based on her past productivity of weaning ratios and number of progeny. PERCENTILE RANK: The smaller numbers under each respective EPD is the percentile rank of that animal within the respective breed. EPD DEFINITIONS Calving Ease Direct (CED): predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year-old heifers. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s progeny. Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
RED
Maintenance Energy (ME): predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in percentage differences in energy required for body maintenance. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Just like the Stayability EPD, Heifer Pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of percentage probability difference. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s daughters. Stayability (STAY): predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. Since the main reason for cows being culled before the age of six is being open, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Marbling Score (MARB): predicts the difference for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Rib Eye Area (REA): predicts the difference of carcass rib eye area between the 12th and 13th rib. Larger rib eye area is associated with more desirable carcass yield grade. Yield Grade (YG): predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. DAM’S INFO YOB: Birth year of dam. WT./BCS: Cow weight and body condition score at last weaning. BR: Number of calves weighed/Average birth weight ratio. WR: Number of calves weaned/Average weaning weight ratio. YR: Number of calves weighed/Average yearling weight ratio.

Why Crossbreed? MATERNAL HETEROSIS Not Glamorous… but HUGE! The benefits seen from using a SimAngus composite bull on a mainly straight-bred cowherd are subtle at first – slightly higher weaning weight, yearling weight, average daily gain and a higher calf survivability rate can be expected. However, research trials dated as far back as thirty years conclude the greatest advantage is an increase in overall cowherd production thanks to MATERNAL HETEROSIS. The crossbred cow is twenty to thirty percent more productive in her lifetime than a straight-bred cow due to increased longevity, increased efficiency, reduced age at puberty, calf survival rate, and increased rate of gain. That same research shows that MATERNAL HETEROSIS is directly responsible for: 1.3 years increased cow longevity (Cundiff 1993) -
20% more calf weaned per cow exposed (Gregory 1980) 1 more calf weaned in her lifetime (Weaber 2007)
“Carefully designed composites, not just crossbred bulls, are easy for the commercial producer to implement and sustain. Remember that all crossbreeding provides heterosis, but heterosis alone cannot fix poor genetic choices. Bottom-line: utilizing heterosis correctly will reduce costs and add value.” Jim Butcher

ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Docility (DOC): Percent of docile calves from one sire compared to calves of other sires. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, focus on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring $140 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $90 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

Red Hill 18-Month Old Bulls The Fall Bulls were weaned in April 2013. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/10/13. It would have been easy to step up the energy in the diet and add 300 pounds to the yearling weights, but we feel this would have had a negative impact on the bulls’ longevity and chose the slower growing forage development. Since that date, the bulls have been on limited pasture with a TMR haylage based ration to maintain condition. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on February 13, 2014 and the scrotal measurements printed in this catalog are from that date. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

A balanced bull that covers all traits very well. Seven EPD traits in the top 20% of the breed and in the top half of breed for every trait except milk. We would say we do not need breed leaders for milk anyway. We used 204Z on a group of our top Nice' n Easy daughters this past fall. This bull maintained excellent flesh during the breeding season. Additionally, 204Z has an excellent haircoat for the fescue belt.

227Z is a bull that has gotten better every day for the last few months. It is safe to say he has worked his way right into this position as Lot 2. This bull is unique for his massive rib and body, fleshing ablity and thickness. He could be the most like his sire of any bull we have offered. 227Z's dam, 104U is as stout and thick as any cow at Red Hill. She is a cow we found to be unique, and we flushed her at a young age. We sold her 2010, 17P son to Russ Diedrichsen, NE.

162Z is a maternal brother to Nice'n Easy and Lot 3. This is a very moderate framed, easy fleshing bull. We selected this bull to clean up a group of AR heifers at Red Hill last fall. 162Z is a very sound structured, long striding bull. The Right Kind cattle have proven themselves as moderate, performance players at Red Hill.

An easy fleshing, moderate 84S son. The dam has outstanding ratios, and she is the combination of a B571 son and a Red Hill donor, 46R. 46R is a product of mating our maternal herdsire, M361, to the dam of our herdsires, 31R and 2U. Proven cows for performance on both sides of this pedigree. 168Z had a maternal brother by T189 that sold for $4250 to LJ Watson, KY in 2012.

159Z is very similar to Lot 1. They are 3/4 brothers. The maternal grandsire, 126T, was sold a few years back to Hardrock Beef, NC. We only retained two daughters of 126T, but they both are raising outstanding bulls to lead off our sale in 2014. 126T is doing a great job in NC and looks quite impressive as a mature bull. 159Z has a full sister that is a standout in our group of fall calving 2-yearolds.

180Z is a standout bull for having super slick, short hair. I know this is "gibberish" to our western customers and friends, but haircoat is so important in Fescue country. This combination of 84S on T189 seems to really work, and it just improves the consistency of the cow traits.

190Z was selected to clean up heifers at Red Hill in the Fall of 2013. We liked S107 and his progeny at Beckton's and decided to sample him in our program. 190Z's dam, 141W, is a top young cow in our program that traces back to the M554 cow like many of the outstanding cows at Red Hill. 141W was the dam of Lot 3 bull in 2013 that sold to Kell Rutt, NE. 190Z had an injury between weaning and yearling so we contemporaried him seperately at yearling. He is fully recovered and did a good job breeding heifers for us.

Red Hill 18-Month Old SimAngus Bulls Since 1996, the American Simmental Association (ASA) has conducted an extensive progeny evaluation program. This program has identified the superior calving ease and carcass genetics in the breed. The Simmental breed was also the first breed involved in the University of Illinois progeny test where complete gain, feed efficiency, and carcass data has been accumulated. Quite simply, the Simmental breed has been the industry leader in sire progeny evaluation. The Simmental genetic evaluation is solely based on data from herds involved in Total Herd Enrollment (THE). Because of the superior growth rate and muscling of Simmental cattle, the breed is a natural complement to Red and Black Angus genetics.

Red Hill Spring Yearling Bulls The bulls were developed on a high-roughage haylage based ration with a goal of the bulls gaining 2.25 pounds per day. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and height measurements were taken on January 20, 2014. Scrotal measurements and BSEs were performed by Dr. Chad Shaw on February 13, 2014. The scrotal measurements printed are actual measurements from February 13, 2014. Many of these bulls have grown 1 to 2 centimeters since their January yearling measurements.

58A is a unique genetic combination of a high performance sire with "in demand" phenotype combined with a moderate Angus cow that excels for calving ease and marbling. 202 is twelve this year and still an active producer here at Red Hill. Her ratios above reflect her Simmental calves. She had a number of Angus calves prior to coming to Red Hill, including our Angus herdsire, 7350. As you can see above 58A balances the data extremely well and his phenotype will not disappoint.

Over the last decade we have sampled several Angus bulls and cows to add new genetics to our SimAngus program. No one Angus animal has suited us any better than 102A's dam, 765. Her frame size is ideal, hair slick, disposition is quiet, data is good and udder is near perfect. 773X is a calving ease 701T son from one of the stoutest purebred cows at Gateway. 102A is a unique bull that deserves extra attention. 129A's dam, 60T, is an ideal SimAngus cow. She has a picture perfect udder and excellent structural correctness. As you can see by her ratios, she always brings home an above average calf. The maternal grandam, K144, produced here until the age of 13 and was a model cow for efficiency. 129A offers excellent structure and feet with gainablity potential.

82A was the bull calf that towered over all others as we neared weaning last fall. He continued his outstanding growth at yearling again. If you sell cattle by the pound, 82A is the bull for you. He is no fluke as he is sired by the high accuracy sire, Beefmaker, and his dam has consistently raised above average calves. 82A has a small scar on both eyes.

“The value in crossbreedng is often underestimated because it has a small positive effect on many different traits that are lowly heritable and difficult to measure. Frequently, maternal heterosis (the value of the crossbred cow) is about decreasing inputs as much as it is about increasing output. For example, longevity, liveability, and disease resistance are traits that impact the input side of the equation as much as the output.” - Dave Daley, Chico State University RED HILL

513T is a nicely balanced, problem-free cow that fits the Red Hill environment well. We flushed 513T to Sharper Image to add performance and the results are balanced cattle with tremendous birth to yearling spread.

152A is a calf that is significantly younger than this group of spring bulls. Due to his late birthdate he was contemporaried separately. We are most impressed with his performance and especially his outstanding scan data. 152A's dam, 14S, is a cow we purchased from Tom Hook for her unique data set and progeny performance, not to mention her outstanding phenotype.

73A was a standout last summer while nursing. His dam's record ranks at the top of our herd. 25P's ability to add pounds at weaning is second to none. 25P has sons working for Mike Smith, GA, Gerkin Family, IN and Jerry Anderson, KY. 25P is also the dam of the heifer we gave to Ty to start his Red Angus herd. To help validate this cows influence, Ty's daughter of 25P is the granddam of Lot 1, 204Z, at the front of this catalog. 73A's maternal granddam, 281 is still going strong at 12 years of age nursing an outstanding bull calf. 281 has had eleven consecutive calves born in a 60-day calving season!

Red Hill Open Heifers We have grown the heifers very slowly (approximately 1.0 lb. ADG from weaning to yearling). We have learned that overfeeding replacement heifers is a waste of money and resources. Red Hill Farms yearling heifers have been wintered on a haylage based ration. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and yearling height measurements were taken on January 20, 2014. Since late February, we have increased the nutrition on these heifers. We plan to breed in mid April; and therefore, we intend for these heifers to gain weight and body condition prior to breeding. We are excited to offer this group of heifers; however, if they do not sell we intend on keeping each one in our herd. These heifers are cycling and ready to breed.

“The future of the industry really comes down to alignment. The cow-calf segment will need to respond to and align with upstream demands for more consistent and valuable genetics...Finally, of course, all of us in the beef trade will have to focus on thoughtful, consistent delivery of a predictable eating experience to our eventual consumer!” -James Herring, CEO, Friona Industries LP. Managing Yearling Bulls In a progressive purebred herd, the young yearling bulls usually represent the most advanced genetics available to the commercial industry. If appropriately managed, these yearling bulls can be used at the age of 14-15 months with excellent results. The Red Hill herd has been developed from herds that have been successfully using yearling bulls for many generations. Yearling bulls are also used extensively in the Red Hill Farms breeding program. We have had no difficulty with yearling bulls maintaining appropriate body condition during the first breeding season; however, we use the bulls for only a 45-60-day breeding season. The yearlings in this sale have been developed to optimize growth rate, skeletal development, and sexual maturity. It has been our goal to give the bulls an opportunity to express their growth potential along with genetic differences for intramuscular fat and ribeye area. Even though the bulls are not as fat as if they had been developed on a higher energy ration, they are still in excellent body condition with some extra fat that is likely to be lost during the first breeding season. Yearling bulls may be mated to cows or heifers, but we prefer to use them on only 15-25 females during the first breeding season. At 14-17 months of age, bulls certainly are not mature in size, and, consequently, a portion of the nutrients consumed should be going toward growth in addition to being used for body maintenance and breeding activity. We recommend removing young bulls from the females after the breeding season to allow the bulls the opportunity to gain some of the condition they have lost and to continue growing at an optimal rate. Yearling bulls may be used in multiple sire groups with other yearlings; however, we strongly discourage the use of yearlings in combination with older bulls in multiple sire settings. All young bulls should be observed at the beginning of the breeding season to determine that each bull is active and aggressive in seeking and mating females that are in heat. Even though young bulls have passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation, this does not ensure that bulls have appropriate libido and the ability to breed in a pasture setting. RED

HILL FARMS — 2014 — BULL BUYING DECISION
Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic Resources I’m just buying a bull….right? Most of us don’t really believe that (statement above), yet the gravity of the decisions associated with selecting the next generation of seedstock may be greater than you first think. All of us consider the calves these bulls might sire and the value they should return to the ranch. Most consider pricing bulls based on a projection of years of service, hopefully 4-8 years barring injury and the calf performance we might expect them to sire. If you don’t keep your own replacement heifers, this makes some sense. If, like most, you keep females, the long term effects of this year’s buying decisions on ranch profitability may not be quite as obvious until we break it down based on the long term maternal value traits we are purchasing. Let’s assume your operation purchases 4 bulls this coming spring of 2014. - First calves born in spring of 2015 - First daughters calving in spring of 2017 (First granddaughters calve in 2019) - With any luck 2 or more of these bulls are still breeding at age 7 (2020) - Last calves born sired by these bulls in 2021 - Last calf crop females have their first calves in 2023 (Their first daughters calve in 2025) - In 2024 a substantial share of the 2-7 year old cows are daughters of the bulls purchased 10 years before. - In the year 2031 there are still a few 11 and 12 year old daughters in your herd sired by the 2014 purchased bulls. - In the year 2031 the granddaughters and great granddaughters of the bulls purchased 17 years ago still make up a substantial portion of the genetics of your herd. I know, most of us don’t like to think about the year 2031. Seems like the Bi-Centennial was just a few years ago (actually 38 years!). If however your plans are to keep or make the beef business an important part of your family’s livelihood as far out as 2031, which most of us do, the bulls you purchase this year will still be an important piece of the profits you enjoy or the challenges you are still working through nearly 20 years from now. Sire selection is that important, so use all the tools available to make the best decisions you can every time! So, if you would like to see a snap-shot of your cow herd 10-20 years from now in 2031, you need only spend some time with the seedstock herd you purchase bulls from. With the exception of a few differences created by environment, what you see is where you are headed! The size, disposition, body condition, udders, feet, calving ease, fertility, longevity, etc of your future cow herd is right there to see. Not just the mature cows either, make sure you look at the 2 and 3 year olds too and consider the direction your source is moving. That is why it is so crucial to choose a seedstock source that is headed where you want and need to be. RED

84S is an easy calving, low maintenance bull that has a perfect disposition and is very slick haired. This bull is ideal for producing females suitable for the heat and humidity of the South. The data indicates his daughters will breed regularly, calve easily, and have longevity. His first sons sold March 20, 2010 in our annual sale and were very well received. Eight 84S sired bred heifers averaged $3,937 in the Buffalo Creek dispersal sale and the 84S sons in the December, 2011 Buffalo Creek sale averaged $1,000 more than any other sire group. 84S will continue to be a high-use sire at Red Hill Farms. “One of B571’s greatest sons, we bought 84S from Red Hill Farms in 2008 for $8,100. In February 2011, 25% interest of 84S sold to Ozark Hills Red Angus and Calvo Family Red Angus for $30,000. This past December, the 13 sons in our sale averaged over $6,000. 84S is one of the premier, proven calving ease sires in the breed, with an excellent spread from birth to yearling. Moderate in size, well muscled and extremely correct, with excellent feet, legs, and testicles, and he has an exceptionally quiet disposition. He epitomizes what the breed is about and is without doubt, a true herd builder.” Buffalo Creek Red Angus, February 2012 ARA Magazine. Rick Calvo notes the tremendous pasture breeding skills of 84S. At Calvo’s Ranch in Nebraska, 84S bred 88 out of 90 females in 50 days. He would breed a cow and move on to the next. This is a testament to the libido, structural correctness, and fertility of 84S. Buffalo Creek Nice ‘N Easy T189 was our pick of the bulls in the November, 2008 Buffalo Creek Sale. We purchased T189 with our cooperator herd, Coyote Hills. T189 is sired by BUF CRK Medallion N328, a bull whose progeny have adapted and performed exceptionally well in the Coyote Hills herd in Kentucky. T189’s dam is simply an outstanding Beckton Julian GG B571 daughter with an exceptional production record. Her progeny averages are 6 at 72 pound BW average, 6/103 WWR and 6/102 YWR for a MPPA of 102.1. Prior to the Buffalo Creek Sale, we were able to find P154 in one of the huge pastures at Buffalo Creek thriving on dry grass, and in respectable body condition for a young cow that had been so fertile and productive. She also had small teats and an apparent problem free udder. Two years later when we attended the Buffalo Creek dispersal, we purchased P154. We believe she was the best cow offered in the sale for the type of cattle we like. T189’s maternal granddam, 9005, had averages of 105 WR, 106 YR and a MPPA of 104.6 on 10 natural calves before going into the Buffalo Creek Transplant program. T189 puts together an unusually strong combination of convenience and cow efficiency traits on both sides of his pedigree. T189 is also outstanding from a phenotypic standpoint. He is a very moderate framed, structurally correct bull with tremendous width of chest, spring of rib and body volume. Out in the pasture with a large group of cows here in KY, T189 exhibits excellent overall balance as he moves over the hills. We like the way that T189 has performed on fescue since coming to Kentucky, maintaining or gaining body condition while running with cows during the breeding season. Owned in partnership with Buffalo Creek Red Angus (WY) and Coyote Hills Farm (KY). SEMEN AVAILABLE

17P excels in his ability to moderate frame, spread the data from birth to yearling, add thickness, and combine all of this with breed leading CEM and STAY. Even more impressive than 17P’s ability to sire outstanding performance is the consistency with which he sires moderate framed, thick, easy-fleshing cattle. 17P’s dam, Shady’s MS Marias 283, was one of the best cows in our herd - 8 calves Avg BW 81 pounds, 6 calves WWR 110, 4 calves YWR 113. In addition to being a very fertile female, 283 was large-volumed, heavy-muscled, and one of the most structurally correct mature cows at Red Hill. A strong attribute of 283 was her ability to thrive on typical fescue pastures--it certainly appears she may have had some genetic resistance to the fescue endophyte. 283 and her 2011 calf were killed by lightning in June 2011. Many thanks to the Gerkins for their confidence in our program with the purchase of 17P. We continue to use 17P and his sons at Red Hill Farms and are thankful to the Gerkins for allowing us to bring 17P back to use naturally in our herd. 17P serviced many of our top cows for 2010 - 2013 calves. 157Y was the third top selling bull in our 2013 sale. He also strides well on an outstanding set of feet. 157Y’s dam is a flush sister to our popular herdsire, 84S. We used 157Y at Red Hill. His calves have been small at birth with good vigor. Red Coat was our pick of the bulls at the 2007 Gateway Bull Sale (MT). Red Coat excels phenotypically being sound structured, thick, and balanced. Red Coat posted impressive individual performance data, low birth weight (81 pounds), 112 WR, and 111 YR. Red Coat’s massive thickness was evidenced by his 16.02 REA (122 ratio). In the Gateway Sale of 235 bulls, Red Coat had the 4th largest REA in the entire offering. With Red Coat’s unparalleled feedlot performance, he has been an ideal fit for mating to our Red Angus cows. In addition to Red Coat’s terminal traits, we have been equally impressed with the exceptional udder quality of his daughters. Red Coat has completed the ASA Carcass Merit Program - - a great way to improve the accuracies of young, unproven bulls. Red Coat has been sampled by several breeders. “Our #1 WW bull calf for 2010 was a son (GW Red Coat 099TS) at almost 950 pounds. We will be using him much more in 2011.” Terry Schlenker, Wilkinson Farms, North Dakota. Owned with Gateway (MT) and JanBil Farms (GA). SEMEN AVAILABLE

Wally impressed us with his exceptional performance ratios and the phenotype we desire. Tom Hook described Wally as “one of the heaviest muscled and soundest structured with a quiet disposition, great appetite, and boasts herd changing carcass and index profile.” We have been impressed by Shear Force’s calving ease when used at Red Hill Farms. Couple this with the high accuracy carcass genetics of Future Direction, and we were pleased to add Wally to the Red Simmental mix at Red Hill Farms. 106W has been tested in the ASA Carcass Merit Program. 106W’s greatest contribution may be his daughters. His first daughters’ calved at Red Hill in the Spring of 2013. They have excellent udders and mothering skills. Additionally, his daughters are moderate-sized and easy fleshing, and as the data indicates, very docile. 106W’s cow family was very well received in the 2013 Hook’s Bred for Balance sale. 106W’s full sister was the top selling cow at $20,000. She also was the dam of the top selling bull, Lot 23 at $15,000. Additionally, Wally 106W’s nine-year old dam sold for $7,500. We believe the Wally daughters will be one of our greatest assets in years to come.

Bull Selection Simplified. Building a cow herd?
Combine lowͲexpense traits (ME EPD) with acceptable revenue traits to breed efficiency into the cow herd. Improve fertility with selection pressure of HPG EPDs. Sleep through the night by selecting highͲCEM EPDs. Improve longevity and lower replacement rates by selecting higherͲ thanͲaverage STAY EPDs.
Breeding virgin heifers?
Select for CED EPD as the most meaningful predictor of calving ease. Red Angus’ CED combines birth weight and other factors affecting calvingͲease scores.
Selling calves or yearlings?
Heavier pay weights may be achieved by selecting higher WW EPDs, but…make sure heavier is what you want. Heavier weaning weights mean heavier pay weights for calf feds. However, for those who background their calves, too much weaning weight could translate into yearlings that are too heavy when they enter the feed yard, and finish too heavy. Overshooting performance goals can be just as detrimental as falling short. Enhance your reputation – improve traits that impact feeder profits, such as carcass traits and postͲweaning gain (YW).
Retaining Ownership?
Docile and fast starting, Red Angus are easy to start on feed and keep on feed. Balance YW EPD of potential bulls with the existing cow herd to pinpoint needed improvement for postͲweaning gains. Increase pay weight with selection for improved CW EPD.
Selling on a Grid?
FineͲtune marbling (MARB), rib eye area (REA), and back fat (FAT) EPDs to target valueͲbased grids. Target YG 1 & 2 premiums and avoid YG 4 discounts by applying selection pressure on YG EPD. Optimize carcass weights to increase pay weights while avoiding discounts for heavy weight carcasses. Balance Carcass EPDs against existing cow herd genetics: o o
Cowherds of higher continental influence may require additional selection pressure on MARB EPD to improve quality grade. HighͲpercentage British cowherds typically benefit from selection pressure to reduce YG and increase CW.
