Dear Friends, We are pleased and excited to welcome you to our 7th Annual Bull & Female Sale – More Than a Bull! Our goal is to offer each customer a complete genetic program along with support services. Our success is measured by the profitability of the commercial producers and purebred breeders who use Red Hill genetics. The cattle have been selected to improve economically relevant traits in order to optimize the practicality and profitability for our commercial customers. 2011 was a year of opportunities at Red Hill Farms. In the spring of 2011, we broadened our Red Angus genetic base with the agreement to lease the entire cowherd from Coyote Hills. These cows represent some of the top genetic lines from Red Hill along with many of the great cow families from Buffalo Creek Red Angus. We thank the Clark Family for allowing us to share these genetics with our customers. We have also leased the Coyote Hills farm in Scottsville, Kentucky and purchased additional land which will allow us to further expand our cowherd. In 2011, Red Hill Farms became one of the newest member/owners of Allied Genetic Resources. We believe this relationship with Allied will result in tremendous networking opportunities for our customers. The demand for Red Hill sired cattle continues to grow. We welcome the opportunity to assist you in marketing your Red Hill sired replacement females and feeder cattle. On Friday night, March 16th, the evening ‘cattle talk’ will focus on marketing opportunities available to our customers. Clint Berry from the Red Angus Association will discuss the RAAA Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and the advantages of utilizing this program. Troy Marshall from Allied Genetic Resources will also update us on the latest in the Allied supply chain development. We dedicate this 7th Annual sale and wish to celebrate the life of our dear friend and coworker, Jerome Hunter. Jerome was only at Red Hill Farms for a few months until his death in September 2011, but these were great times. Although we did not get to accomplish our dreams of breeding cattle together, Jerome had such a positive influence on our crew. His smile and “can do” attitude will always be remembered. A major reward of the seedstock business is the opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of our customers and fellow breeders. You are always welcome to visit our farm to study our cattle and their production records. We intend to collect the most comprehensive data set in the industry - - from birth to rail to cowherd records - - and share all the information with you, the customer. Please review our catalog and contact us if you have questions. We hope to see you on March 16th and 17th! Bart, Sarah and Ty Jones Gordon and Susan Jones

ALLIED GENETIC RESOURCES Allied Genetic Resources is a business owned and supported by a group of committed cattle seedstock producers but designed to promote the profitability of their customers. The future of genetic production and marketing will become more focused on customer service and increased profitability and less about the tradition of just selling bulls. Superior genetics must not only function to increase efficiencies at the ranch, they will need to be desired and differentiated in value by the beef industry. Allied is positioned to provide those type of services. Whether you are looking for genetics tailored to your commercial production environment and resources, or you are searching for profitable marketing options, we can help. The 60 owners of Allied Genetic Resources are located in 21 states from California to Virginia and Montana to Texas with over 14,000 seedstock cows and 6,250 commercial females. The owners market more than 5,000 bulls annually. This scope helps to insure great selection and quality whether you need 1 or 100 bulls or any size group of replacement females. With over 2,500 SimAngus bulls, 1,200 Simmental bulls, 1,000 Angus and Red Angus and 300 Balancer bulls marketed annually, Allied owners offer tremendous selection regardless of your genetic needs. Ultimately, the value of the Allied group of producers is in their character and commitment to customers. This business rests firmly on the combined reputations of some of the highest quality people in the beef business. Independent farm and ranch families all with a proud tradition of standing behind the bulls and females they sell and working with the goal of commercial customer profitability.

What can Allied do for you? 1. Provide priority access to a substantial network of Allied Feeding Partners who prefer feeding cattle with genetics provided by Allied seedstock producers. 2. Simplify the process of purchasing great genetics with decision support, proof of value and warranty. 3. Assist in the marketing and purchase of valuable replacement females of all ages. 4. Work with you individually along with your seedstock source to get the most out of the genetics you purchase.

BULL BUYING DECISION Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic Resources I’m just buying a bull….right? Most of us don’t really believe that (statement above), yet the gravity of the decisions associated with selecting the next generation of seedstock may be greater than you first think. All of us consider the calves these bulls might sire and the value they should return to the ranch. Most consider pricing bulls based on a projection of years of service, hopefully 4-8 years barring injury and the calf performance we might expect them to sire. If you don’t keep your own replacement heifers, this makes some sense. If, like most, you keep females, the long term effects of this year’s buying decisions on ranch profitability may not be quite as obvious until we break it down based on the long term maternal value traits we are purchasing. Let’s assume your operation purchases 4 bulls this coming spring of 2012. - First calves born in spring of 2013 - First daughters calving in spring of 2015 (First granddaughters calve in 2017) - With any luck 2 or more of these bulls are still breeding at age 7 (2018) - Last calves born sired by these bulls in 2019 - Last calf crop females have their first calves in 2021 (Their first daughters calve in 2023) - In 2022 a substantial share of the 2-7 year old cows are daughters of the bulls purchased 10 years before. - In the year 2030 there are still a few 11 and 12 year old daughters in your herd sired by the 2012 purchased bulls. - In the year 2030 the granddaughters and great granddaughters of the bulls purchased 18 years ago still make up a substantial portion of the genetics of your herd. I know, most of us don’t like to think about the year 2030. Seems like the Bi-Centennial was just a few years ago (actually 37 years!). If however your plans are to keep or make the beef business an important part of your family’s livelihood as far out as 2030, which most of us do, the bulls you purchase this year will still be an important piece of the profits you enjoy or the challenges you are still working through nearly 20 years from now. Sire selection is that important, so use all the tools available to make the best decisions you can every time! So, if you would like to see a snap-shot of your cow herd 10-20 years from now in 2030, you need only spend some time with the seedstock herd you purchase bulls from. With the exception of a few differences created by environment, what you see is where you are headed! The size, disposition, body condition, udders, feet, calving ease, fertility, longevity, etc of your future cow herd is right there to see. Not just the mature cows either, make sure you look at the 2 and 3 year olds too and consider the direction your source is moving. That is why it is so crucial to choose a seedstock source that is headed where you want and need to be. RED

ABOUT THE CATALOG for RED ANGUS LOTS Cat: An animal’s category under the Red Angus recordation system. This is a registration structure that classifies an animal according to its percentage of Red Angus genes.

Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

1A -

Purebred 100% Red Angus with no disqualifying characteristics (i.e. black, scurs, white in front of navel)

Milk (MILK): predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves.

1B -

87% to 99% Red Angus, with no disqualifying characteristics.

2-

1A and 1B animals that are disqualified from those categories because of characteristics described above.

Total Maternal (TM): predicts the rancher’s actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal’s daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf’s weaning weight EPD.

3-

Less than 87% Red Angus gene content. PERFORMANCE VALUES

BW: The animal’s adjusted birth weight. A lower BW Ratio corresponds to lighter birth weights. 205 WW: The animal’s adjusted weaning weight. 365 YW: The animal’s adjusted yearling weight. ADG: Average Daily Gain from weaning to yearling. ADG Ratio is a Red Hill Farms ratio, grouping cattle by sex. Scrotal: Scrotal measurements are actual measurements in centimeters taken on 2/14/12. Frame Score: A convenient way to describe skeletal size of an animal based on the animal’s hip height adjusted to 365 days of age. With appropriate height growth curves, most animals will maintain the same frame score throughout their life while the actual hip height increases with age. However, with some animals that mature earlier or later than average, the score will change. Frame scores have been calculated twice on animals selling. The frame score listed is an average of the 2 values. %IMF & REA: Adjusted measurements taken on 9/7/11 for fall animals and 1/16/12 for spring yearlings. DAM MPPA: Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA) - An estimate of a cow’s future productivity based on her past productivity of weaning ratios and number of progeny. PERCENTILE RANK: The smaller numbers under each respective EPD is the percentile rank of that animal within the respective breed. EPD DEFINITIONS Calving Ease Direct (CED): predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year-old heifers. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s progeny. Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

RED

Maintenance Energy (ME): predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in percentage differences in energy required for body maintenance. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Just like the Stayability EPD, Heifer Pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of percentage probability difference. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s daughters. Stayability (STAY): predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. Since the main reason for cows being culled before the age of six is being open, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Marbling Score (MARB): predicts the difference for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Rib Eye Area (REA): predicts the difference of carcass rib eye area between the 12th and 13th rib. Larger rib eye area is associated with more desirable carcass yield grade. Yield Grade (YG): predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. DAM’S INFO YOB: Birth year of dam. WT./BCS: Cow weight and body condition score at last weaning. BR: Number of calves weighed/Average birth weight ratio. WR: Number of calves weaned/Average weaning weight ratio. YR: Number of calves weighed/Average yearling weight ratio.

Why Crossbreed? MATERNAL HETEROSIS Not Glamorous… but HUGE! The benefits seen from using a SimAngus composite bull on a mainly straight-bred cowherd are subtle at first – slightly higher weaning weight, yearling weight, average daily gain and a higher calf survivability rate can be expected. However, research trials dated as far back as thirty years conclude the greatest advantage is an increase in overall cowherd production thanks to MATERNAL HETEROSIS. The crossbred cow is twenty to thirty percent more productive in her lifetime than a straight-bred cow due to increased longevity, increased efficiency, reduced age at puberty, calf survival rate, and increased rate of gain. That same research shows that MATERNAL HETEROSIS is directly responsible for: 1.3 years increased cow longevity (Cundiff 1993) -

20% more calf weaned per cow exposed (Gregory 1980) 1 more calf weaned in her lifetime (Weaber 2007)

“Carefully designed composites, not just crossbred bulls, are easy for the commercial producer to implement and sustain. Remember that all crossbreeding provides heterosis, but heterosis alone cannot fix poor genetic choices. Bottom-line: utilizing heterosis correctly will reduce costs and add value.” Jim Butcher

ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Docility (DOC): Percent of docile calves from one sire compared to calves of other sires. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, focus on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring $125 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $75 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. RED

Red Hill Red Angus 18-Month Old Bulls

The Fall Bulls were weaned in March 2011. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/7/11. Since that date, the bulls have been on limited pasture and hay and have been supplemented with soy hulls to maintain condition. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on February 14, 2012 and the scrotal measurements printed in this catalog are from that date. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

HILL FARMS — 2012 —

Red Hill SimAngus Bulls Since 1996, the American Simmental Association (ASA) has conducted an extensive progeny evaluation program. This program has identified the superior calving ease and carcass genetics in the breed. The Simmental breed was also the first breed involved in the University of Illinois progeny test where complete gain, feed efficiency, and carcass data has been accumulated. Quite simply, the Simmental breed has been the industry leader in sire progeny evaluation. The Simmental genetic evaluation is solely based on data from herds involved in Total Herd Enrollment (THE). Because of the superior growth rate and muscling of Simmental cattle, the breed is a natural complement to Red and Black Angus genetics. The Red Hill Simmental program is built around Gateway genetics from Montana. Jim Butcher and Family are to be commended for the contributions they are making to the beef business. The cattle selling are direct descendents from the Gateway Program, and we thank the Butcher Family for sharing their superior genetic resources and cattle breeding expertise. We asked Jim about color and horns on a particular bull prior to Gateway’s record sale in February, 2012. His reply, “Coming to Gateway is like going to Vegas - - take your chances.” However, rest assured there is NO gamble in the Gateway cattle breeding program for calving ease, marbling and cow performance. We encourage each producer to study the Simmental EPDs, as these EPDs DO NOT need to be compared with the data on the Red Angus bulls and heifers. Starting with the release of the Fall 2010 EPDs, the Red Angus Association and American Simmental Association have a combined genetic evaluation. However, the Red Angus published EPDs and Simmental/SimAngus published EPDs cannot be directly compared because the EPDs are published on the respective breeds’ base. We believe the ASA to have the most advanced multi-breed genetic evaluation system in the beef business. The Simmental bull management has been identical to that of the Red Angus bulls – as all the bulls ran in the same pastures and were fed from the same troughs.

Red Hill SimAngus 18-Month Old Bulls

The Fall Bulls were weaned in March 2011. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/7/11. Since that date, the bulls have been on limited pasture and hay and have been supplemented with soy hulls to maintain condition. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on February 14, 2012. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

“It’s the proverbial no-brainer: increase cattle production with the same inputs or maintain current production with fewer inputs. That’s the predictable opportunity provided by heterosis through crossbreeding cattle...Research conducted at U.S. Meat Animal Research Center indicates heterosis yields 25% more lifetime cow productivity and 38% more cow longevity. All told, crossbred females are estimated to be 30% more productive over their lifetimes, due to increased fertility, calf survivability, increased weaning weights and cow longevity. Wes Ishmael, “Crossbreeding Arrives, Finally, Maybe, BEEF, March 1, 2010

“I encourage producers to think about bulls more as an investment rather than as an expense. Think about what you can invest economically, relative to what that investment can return. The biggest mistake I believe cow/calf producers can make is not investing in a good bull. – Jason Cleere, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, Texas A&M University

Red Hill Black Angus

Red Hill Farms strongly supports crossbreeding systems which are designed to take advantage of the economic benefits of hybrid vigor. Crossbreeding in the beef industry presents the opportunity to take advantage of breed complementarity. We are utilizing our small herd of black Angus cattle primarily to provide complementary genetics for our Simmental program. Just as with our Red Angus cows, we enroll all of our black Angus cows in the Simmental Total Herd Enrollment (THE). This gives us the most comprehensive data available on these animals from the multi-breed genetic evaluation. In 2008, we purchased Angus cattle from Dr. Warden’s Ironwood herd in Iowa and from Alan and Kathy Kapp in Missouri. Ironwood 7350 was purchased because of his fantastic ultrasound measurements and the record of his outstanding dam (see herdsire section on website and on page 57 of this catalog). In addition to 7350, we also purchased his dam, 202 (dam of Angus bulls), and his half sister, 5320 (dam of Lot 15). Likewise, we have incorporated Predestined into our Angus program because he is simply the most proven superior carcass sire in the beef industry. We have also included Gardens Wave for superior marbling and his ability to sire moderate framed daughters with low maintenance energy requirements.

HILL FARMS — 2012 —

Red Hill Open Heifers We have grown the heifers very slowly (approximately 1.0 lb. ADG from weaning to yearling). We have learned that overfeeding replacement heifers is a waste of money and resources. Red Hill Farms yearling heifers have been wintered on a haylage based ration. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and yearling height measurements were taken on January 16, 2012. Since late February, we have increased the nutrition on these heifers. We plan to breed in mid April; and therefore, we intend for these heifers to gain weight and body condition prior to breeding. We are excited to offer this group of heifers; however, if they do not sell we intend on keeping each one in our herd. These heifers are cycling and ready to breed.

Search the RAAA database for CED, YW, ME, STAY, and REA and this heifer will single herself out. This is a great combination of data. The maternal side of her pedigree traces back to the Beckton Rose N011 cow that was our first example that small cows are more efficient. Very solid reproduction in this pedigree.

FEEDLOT and GRID PERFORMANCE Most Red Hill commercial customers and fellow purebred breeders are aware of the emphasis the Red Hill program has placed on convenience traits, cow efficiency, fertility, longevity, and fescue adaptability. At the same time, Red Hill Farms has also attempted to drag along increased growth and carcass superiority. In fact, the Simmental breed was added to the Red Hill program in order to provide not only opportunities for heterosis for commercial customers but to complement the Red Hill Red Angus genetics with extra growth and carcass cutability potential. Recently, Red Hill Farms and Jay Price (RHF bull customer) received a closeout (January 2011) on 75 head (42 steers and 33 heifers) fed with the Tri County Steer Carcass Futurity in Iowa at the Gregory Feedlot. The table below illustrates the performance data for the Red Hill pen compared with averages on 6,717 head of steers and 3,319 head of heifers finished in 2010 with Tri County. The Red Hill pen of cattle were shipped to the Gregory Feedlot on June 28, 2010 and harvested on December 27, 2010 and Jan 31, 2011. Average profit for this pen of cattle was $189.46/hd.

Red Hill Farms realizes that many of their customers’ cattle are sold at weaning. However, there is potential for the entire beef industry to become more profitable if producers strive to improve production efficiency and beef products all the way “from the pasture to the plate”.

“There’s no reason to back away, no threshold level of marbling that science has determined as sufficient in breeding stock, no level beyond which selection for marbling is known to be harmful to other economically important traits...this is no time to let up on the pedal..for consumers, it takes more money to buy any beef than the competing proteins, so it better not disappoint.” Steve Suther, Don’t Forget the Value Driver (Marbling), October 2011, Angus Beef Bulletin

Managing Yearling Bulls In a progressive purebred herd, the young yearling bulls usually represent the most advanced genetics available to the commercial industry. If appropriately managed, these yearling bulls can be used at the age of 1415 months with excellent results. The Red Hill herd has been developed from herds that have been successfully using yearling bulls for many generations. Yearling bulls are also used extensively in the Red Hill Farms breeding program. We have had no difficulty with yearling bulls maintaining appropriate body condition during the first breeding season; however, we use the bulls for only a 45-60-day breeding season. The yearlings in this sale have been developed to optimize growth rate, skeletal development, and sexual maturity. It has been our goal to give the bulls an opportunity to express their growth potential along with genetic differences for intramuscular fat and ribeye area. Even though the bulls are not as fat as if they had been developed on a higher energy ration, they are still in excellent body condition with some extra fat that is likely to be lost during the first breeding season. Yearling bulls may be mated to cows or heifers, but we prefer to use them on only 15-25 females during the first breeding season. At 14-17 months of age, bulls certainly are not mature in size, and, consequently, a portion of the nutrients consumed should be going toward growth in addition to being used for body maintenance and breeding activity. We recommend removing young bulls from the females after the breeding season to allow the bulls the opportunity to gain some of the condition they have lost and to continue growing at an optimal rate. Yearling bulls may be used in multiple sire groups with other yearlings; however, we strongly discourage the use of yearlings in combination with older bulls in multiple sire settings. All young bulls should be observed at the beginning of the breeding season to determine that each bull is active and aggressive in seeking and mating females that are in heat. Even though young bulls have passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation, this does not ensure that bulls have appropriate libido and the ability to breed in a pasture setting. RED

Expected Progeny Differences—EPDs by Dr. Gordon F. Jones Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the most important data in the cattle industry for use in making selection decisions. EPDs have allowed cattle producers to include scientifically sound information in the decision making process. The key to having meaningful EPDs is the performance data that is used in making the calculations. Because of Total Herd Reporting (THR), the Red Angus database is the most accurate in the beef industry. THR was implemented in 1995 to require the annual production of each cow and the performance of every calf raised through weaning to be reported. Beginning in 2006, the only data used in Simmental EPD calculations is data from herds involved in Total Herd Enrollment. To understand EPDs, it is imperative to understand that the most important word is Difference. For example, if Bull A has a Weaning Weight (WW) EPD of +35 and Bull B has a WW EPD of +15, the difference is 20 pounds of weaning weight. If these two bulls were AI’d to comparable cows in a contemporary group, then we would expect the calves sired by Bull A to average 20 pounds heavier at weaning. Would this difference always occur? No, but the larger the number of calves sired by each bull, the more closely the actual difference in weaning weight should come to the expected difference. Does the EPD for a yearling bull have the same meaning as for an older, widely used, proven A.I. sire? Yes, the EPDs have exactly the same meaning. However, there will be a difference in the accuracy value between the yearling and the “proven” sire. The accuracy values are reported as decimal numbers from 0 to 1.0 and are an indication of the likelihood that the EPD represents the true genetic merits of an animal. The accuracy values are based upon the amount of information that is available for calculating the EPDs. Of course bulls with a large number of progeny in several different herds will have higher accuracy values than young bulls with no progeny records. Should more emphasis be placed upon individual performance values or EPDs? Certainly most of the emphasis should be placed on EPDs because the EPDs not only represent the performance deviation of an individual from his respective contemporary group but also incorporates information from relatives. Research at various universities has shown clearly that genetic progress can be achieved much faster by using EPDs than individual performance data. Should a commercial producer select for maximum/minimum EPDs or optimal EPDs? There has been a tremendous misconception among purebred and commercial producers alike concerning how EPDs should be utilized in selection and breeding programs. Among many purebred breeders, there appears to be a race to get the highest or lowest value possible for some traits, and, then animals with these high/low values are promoted accordingly. A commercial producer should first assess the areas that need most improvement in his herd, and then select bulls that fit the needs of his particular herd. For example, some beef herds have been derived from a dairy genetic base and may actually produce more milk than desired. Heavier milking cows and limited feed resources often result in a higher number of open cows than desired at the end of the breeding season. In this case, one would certainly NOT want to purchase a bull with high Milk EPD. Conversely, if a commercial producer has easy fleshing cows that breed back easily and his weaning weights are low, then it would be logical to select bulls with higher Milk EPDs to sire his replacement heifers. Therefore, it is important for a commercial producer to assess his herd to determine the areas that need improvement before making selections. Producers should think of the bull simply as a delivery system for passing on the genetics of the bull. EPDs are the best tool available for assessing the bull’s genetics for most of the economically important traits. However, we also recommend considering the phenotypic traits of importance for which EPDs do not exist such as structural soundness, fleshing ability, frame size, body volume, and udder quality. We will be happy to assist if you have questions concerning the EPDs reported in this catalog. Also, if you would like a more in depth discussion about EPDs, the Red Angus Association has an excellent publication -- “Predicting Profit…The Rancher’s Guide to EPDs”. You may obtain a copy by calling 940-387-3502 or visiting www.redangus.org.

17P is the most dominant sire we have used at Red Hill Farms. No Red Angus bull compares in the ability to moderate frame, spread the data from birth to yearling, add thickness, and combine all of this with breed leading CEM and STAY. Even more impressive than 17P’s ability to sire outstanding performance is the consistency with which he sires moderate framed, thick, easy-fleshing cattle. 17P’s dam, Shady’s MS Marias 283, was one of the best cows in our herd - 8 calves Avg BW 81 pounds, 6 calves WWR 110, 4 calves YWR 113. In addition to being a very fertile female, 283 was large-volumed, heavy-muscled, and one of the most structurally correct mature cows at Red Hill. A strong attribute of 283 was her ability to thrive on typical fescue pastures--it certainly appears she may have had some genetic resistance to the fescue endophyte. 283 and her 2011 calf were killed by lightning in June 2011. 17P’s first daughters calved in the Spring of 2008. His daughters have excellent udders and have posted above average weaning weight ratios. His daughters are also smaller than average which documents his ability to produce more pounds from smaller cows. Many thanks to the Gerkins for their confidence in our program with the purchase of 17P. We continue to use 17P and his sons at Red Hill Farms and are thankful to the Gerkins for allowing us to bring 17P back to use naturally in our herd. 17P serviced our top cows for 2010 and 2011 calves. “I am concerned many commercial cattle producers have abandoned crossbreeding and are going back to straight breeding – primarily with Angus bulls because of the demand for black-hided calves. By piling generations of Angus bulls on top of one another, those producers eventually will sacrifice the heterosis (hybrid vigor) gained through crossbreeding. It is highly unlikely the premiums paid for black-hided calves will come close to making up for the income sacrificed by the loss of heterosis.” – Dr. Harlan Ritchie, Distinguished Professor of Animal Science, Michigan State University RED

Buffalo Creek Nice ‘N Easy T189 was our pick of the bulls in the November, 2008 Buffalo Creek Sale. We purchased T189 with our cooperator herd, Coyote Hills. T189 is sired by BUF CRK Medallion N328, a bull whose progeny have adapted and performed exceptionally well in the Coyote Hills herd in Kentucky. T189’s dam is simply an outstanding Beckton Julian GG B571 daughter with an exceptional production record. Her progeny averages are 5/74, 4/105 and 4/102 for a MPPA of 103.8. Prior to the Buffalo Creek Sale, we were able to find P154 in one of the huge pastures at Buffalo Creek thriving on dry grass, and in respectable body condition for a young cow that had been so fertile and productive. She also had small teats and an apparent problem free udder. Two years later when we attended the Buffalo Creek dispersal, we purchased P154. We believe she was the best cow offered in the sale for the type of cattle we like. T189’s maternal granddam, 9005, had averages of 105 WR, 106 YR and a MPPA of 104.5 on 10 natural calves before going into the Buffalo Creek Transplant program. T189 puts together an unusually strong combination of convenience and cow efficiency traits on both sides of his pedigree. T189 is also outstanding from a phenotypic standpoint. He is a very moderate framed, structurally correct bull with tremendous width of chest, spring of rib and body volume. Out in the pasture with a large group of cows here in KY, T189 exhibits excellent overall balance as he moves over the hills. We like the way that T189 has performed on fescue since coming to Kentucky, maintaining or gaining body condition while running with cows during the breeding season. 149U combines two of our original Beckton cow families - Barmaid and Vernice. 149U’s dam, 87S, has a beautiful udder and is our favorite Keystone daughter. She has had 3 calves with an average birth weight of 69 pounds, WWR of 108, and YWR of 104. The maternal granddam, M682, has been a consistent producer with four daughters working in our herd. 149U is a sound structured bull that should be a no-miss maternal sire. He represents generations of low maintenance, highly fertile, problem-free cows. Owned in partnership with L. J. Watson from Liberty, KY. SEMEN AVAILABLE

28U is one of the top bulls ever produced at Red Hill Farms. 28U’s dam does what we preach - - she has weaned four calves with a weaning weight ratio of 108 and weighed 1,000 pounds last fall. 28U’s paternal granddam, N011, has never weighed over 900 at weaning and has always bred back. We believe in smaller, more efficient cows and this bull is the real deal. 28U is stacked for generations of low maintenance, efficient cattle. 28U sold in the February 2011 Buffalo Creek sale for $13,000. Ripper’s dam, N011, continues to amaze us as she is our smallest cow, weighing around 900 pounds each fall. She always breeds early and calves at the beginning of the calving season. Ripper is a valuable bull in our program as he is an outcross to all our Cherokee and Lancer cattle. Ripper’s daughters appear to possess his low maintenance and easy fleshing characteristics. The Spring 2009 sale featured 2 of the best 13R sons to date - 2U and 28U. They were our top selling bulls. 28U sold to Buffalo Creek Red Angus (WY), and 2U sold to Comerford Farms (GA). Both 2U and 28U continue to be used at Red Hill. Owned with Comerford Farms, LLC (GA)

We were impressed with the individual performance of R1 and the outstanding females in his pedigree. R1 had an adjusted BW of 89(107), WW of 778(111) and a YW of 1353(105). R1 was the first calf from an outstanding 2-year old daughter of DS Six Shooter 3H, his grand dam (L108) is an excellent cow with consistent records, and his great-grand dam (A4) was a phenomenal producer, weaning 13 calves before leaving the herd at the age of 14. The actual ultrasonic values for R1 at 1240 lbs were REA=16.9, %IMF= 3.5, and Fat=0.17. The carcass EPDs do not reflect these values because the contemporaries were not ultrasounded at the same time. MMF BO R1 represents an unusual combination of calving ease, growth, and carcass superiority along with fantastic maternal records. His first calves were born in the Spring 2007. R1 was entered in the ASA Carcass Merit Program with calves harvested in 2012. R1 is homozygous black, homozygous polled and has NOT sired a calf with spotting when bred to a group of spotted cows. R1 sired 4 steers in a group of 65 finished at a Tri County feedlot in Western Iowa. Iowa State Extension calculates Retail Value/Day on Test and Retail Value/Day of Age for all steers finished in this group of feedlots. Among the 65 steers in the pen, the 4 R1 steers ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 for Retail Value/Day of age. The other MMF BO R1 steers were sired by Angus, Red Angus and Gelbvieh bulls. The data from these steers supports R1’s growth and carcass values. Owned with Gateway Simmental, Lewistown, MT. SEMEN AVAILABLE

Red Coat excels phenotypically being sound structured, thick, and balanced. Red Coat posted impressive individual performance data, low birth weight (81 pounds), 112 WR, and 111 YR. Red Coat’s massive thickness was evidenced by his 16.02 REA (122 ratio). In the Gateway Sale of 235 bulls, Red Coat had the 4th largest REA in the entire offering. With Red Coat’s unparalleled feedlot performance, he has been an ideal fit for mating to our Red Angus cows. In addition to Red Coat’s terminal traits, we have been equally impressed with the exceptional udder quality of his daughters. Red Coat has completed the ASA Carcass Merit Program - - a great way to improve the accuracies of young, unproven bulls. Red Coat has been sampled by several breeders. “Our #1 WW bull calf for 2010 was a son (GW Red Coat 099TS) at almost 950 pounds. We will be using him much more in 2011.” Terry Schlenker, Wilkinson Farms, North Dakota. Owned with Gateway (MT) and JanBil Farms (GA). SEMEN AVAILABLE

In addition to breed leading growth and carcass data, 701T was a moderate framed, wide-centered bull with excellent structure. He was also an easy fleshing bull with a calm disposition. After completing the ASA Carcass Merit Program, his EPDs are now even more superior. A bonus is that 701T now ranks in the top 3% of the breed for BW and is truly a “calving ease” son of Predestined. Among the 25 most widely used Simmental/SimAngus bulls in 2009, 701T had both the highest API and Ti of the 25 bulls. (The Register, March 2010) We have used 701T in both our A.I. and E.T. programs, and he was used naturally for Fall breeding in 2009 and 2010. 701T’s dam, 363L, is now owned by Red Hill Farms. 363L is a remarkably sound female with an excellent udder - small teats and excellent udder support at 10 years of age. 701T sons will be the highlight of our upcoming bull sale. 701T Thanks to Gateway Simmentals, MT, for allowing us the opportunity to use this great sire! GW Predestined 773X was our choice of the 2011 Gateway Sale. We are committed to concentrating the genetics of GW Predestined 701T who is one of the outstanding balanced trait bulls in the entire beef industry. Likewise, 773X is a balanced trait bull with unusually superior carcass values (120 ratio for IMF and 124 ratio for REA, the highest in the entire Gateway offering). Both the dam and the granddam of 773X have been donors in the Gateway program. 773X is homozygous black and homozygous polled. Owned with Gateway (MT) and Sunshine Farms (AL).

“Lot 7 (734Y) is a real complete bull out of a model Lucky Charm cow. He has been a stick out since he was a calf and developed nicely. Typical of the Premium Beef bulls as he is long-bodied, not tall, soft topped, and easy doing.” Jim Butcher 734Y was selected from the 2012 Gateway Sale as an ideal bull to mate to our 701T daughters. 734Y posted outstanding individual ratios - - WWR 103, YWR 110, IMF ratio 122, and REA ratio 104. Additionally, 734Y is moderate framed, easy fleshing and sound structured. Owned with Gateway Simmental (MT) and Gibbs Farms (AL).

We found 7350 at Dr. Warden’s Ironwood Farms in the Spring of 2008. 7350 had an unusual combination of low birth weight (78 pounds, BWR 91) and above average growth (WW 658/103, YW 1240,102, ADG 4.76/114), along with the highest %IMF scan (7.80/156) and the highest REA (17.2/112) of the entire sale offering at Dr. Warden’s. 7350 had a scrotal circumference of 41 cm. 7350’s dam has a remarkable record -- 4 calves at 76 pounds/93, WW 5/108, YW 3/108, %IMF 3/149, REA 3/99. In addition to purchasing 7350 as the top selling bull in the Warden’s sale, we also purchased his dam who is now in production at Red Hill Farms. 7350 is sired by the ABS bull 4 Point 8 of Ironwood and his dam, 202, is a T510 x 036 x 6807 making her a double-bred 6807. 7350 has been used in the SimAngus program at Red Hill as well as sampled in several other herds. He is a documented calving ease sire with tremendous carcass potential. SEMEN AVAILABLE
