T
he Two Oceans Aquarium offers visitors the opportunity to discover the diverse marine life found off the southern African coast. Through displays ranging from the small and almost fantastical Knysna seahorses, to large ragged-tooth sharks, the Aquarium holds wondrous discoveries for young and old. Meet the animals that call the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean their home – and the brightly coloured ones that live in the warm Indian Ocean. Be mesmerised by the swaying of the giant kelp in the aptly named Ocean Basket Kelp Forest Exhibit- one of only a handful living kelp forest displays in the world and the only one in Africa. The Aquarium offers qualified divers the opportunity to dive in the I&J Predator Exhibit with ragged-tooth sharks, turtles and shoals of other predatory fishes. For divers with an advanced qualification, diving in the Ocean Basket Kelp Forest Exhibit, surrounded by a multitude of fish, is a “must-do” dive. Dive bookings are essential and

ambia, the country that was put on the European map by explorer and adventurer David Livingstone, is wellknown for the largest waterfall in the world, the Victoria Waterfalls. Albeit that the country takes its name from the mighty Zambezi River, Zambia is much more than just a massive mass of water tumbling down. Even though the Victoria Waterfalls (named after queen Victoria of England) are extremely impressive, the country caters for all types of tourists. Whether you are into adventure, nature, culture or history, Zambia is definitely the country for you. Being one of Africa’s most water- rich countries, Zambia teems with bird- and wildlife. Due to the continuous efforts of its government to improve conservation, the National Parks boast some of
the best game viewing in the world. From the oddly shaped hippo to the tenacious crocodile, you will find all of natures popular actors and villains here. Through in the world’s largest lake, Lake Tanganyika; Lake Mweru (slightly off the beaten track) and Lake Kariba with its beach holiday atmosphere, you will find it difficult to believe that you are in a land-locked country. Add to that one of the fastest growing cities in Africa, namely the capital city of Lusaka, you certainly have the best of both worlds. To sweeten the pot even more, the historic town of Livingstone is fast becoming “the adventure capital of Africa.” Zambia, a truly quintessential African country! It offers Stone Age history, cultural - and biodiversity and so much more. SOUTHERN AFRICA

T
he Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, is known as “The Living Desert”, because of its large number of living species. This desert lends its name to the country in which it is situated, Namibia. Where else would you find places with such mysterious names as Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast and Etosha? Namibia is a place for adventure, a place for loosing yourself and a place for finding yourself. It is no wonder that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt chose this place for the birth of their child. It is a place of wonder. Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and also the jump- off point for tourists. From there you can explore the wonderful town of Swakopmund, known for its ecotourism. If sand-boarding is your
thing, Swakopmund is the place for you. It also sports beautiful colonial style architecture. If you are looking for something contrasting, look no further than the second biggest town in Namibia, Walvis Bay. The meeting place of two extreme landscapes, you will find the Namib Desert on the one side and a massive lagoon with a harbour on the other side. If this is not extreme enough for you, visit the aptly named “Skeleton Coast”. The Bushmen named this place “The Land God Made in Anger”. The Portuguese sailors called it “The Gates of Hell”. Enough said. Space does not allow me to wax lyrically of the Etosha National Park and other natural gems of Namibia. Suffice to say, see it for yourself. SOUTHERN AFRICA

Deeply rooted in the lore of the African bush, the programme not only creates a series of unforgettable moments for the whole family but forges strong bonds between our young guests, our planet and its people. WILDCHILD ADVENTURES
At &Beyond’s family-friendly lodges in Africa, as young, sleepy heads take shelter in the comfort of their beds after a day full of thrills, they will find an assignment for the following day’s expedition laid out on their pillow, ready to fill their dreams with anticipation. Each expedition is carefully selected according to the interests and ages of the children and will be carried out in the care of our friendly staff, from rangers and trackers to child minders and cooks.
Expeditions may involve activities such as tracking and fishing, making traditional bows and arrows, beading, crafting and painting, as well as fun in the lodge garden or kitchen and more. The children’s activities available at each of &Beyond’s lodges attempt to tie in with that particular environment, as well as the local heritage of the region. For example, at &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge in Namibia youngsters may experience stargazing as well as Bushman games that teach them the culture of the region, including how to find food and water in the desert. Meanwhile, in Botswana’s Okavango Delta adventures may include fishing expeditions and making necklaces with the Delta’s beautiful water lilies. WILDCHILD MEMORIES Each WILDchild adventure is made up of unforgettable moments to cherish forever and, to help keep memories of their safari fresh, each young traveller will receive a WILDchild backpack with a special scrapbook and other goodies at the &Beyond lodge where they begin their journey. Throughout the safari, the scrapbook is filled up with mementoes of special times in the bush, from notes and drawings to stickers. At each subsequent participating lodge our young guests will receive a different educational or bush-oriented gift, as well as fresh expeditions to carry out, so that each stop adds to their collection and their experience
continues to grow throughout their journey. Each &Beyond lodge has something different to offer, whether it is a solar torch, a magnifying glass or a compass. Specially sourced by &Beyond, all our gifts consist of quality products made of recycled or sustainable materials where possible and used to encourage interaction between the child and their ranger or guide, who helps them unravel the mysteries of the African bush and introduces them to local customs and traditions. To add to each child’s experience, the Safari Shops at many of &Beyond’s lodges and camps also stock a range of WILDchild goodies, including scrapbook stickers and clothing. Through purchasing these mementoes, our young guests not only provide themselves with a tangible reminder of their African adventure but also contribute towards the Community Leaders Education Fund scholarship programme, which assists students from the communities bordering &Beyond’s conservation areas with funding for their tertiary education. WILDCHILD IN THE MAKING At the end of your extraordinary family adventure, along with treasured memories of time spent together, you will find your children have fallen irrevocably in love with the animals, people and landscapes of Africa, true conservationists in the making.

LAND OF THE BAOBAB TREE, MAPUNGUBWE AND THE BIG FIVE.
he province was named after the Limpopo River, second largest river in South Africa. As such, the river was used as a means of transport for foreigners to trade with the ancient civilization of Mapungubwe. The importance of the Mapungupwe landscape is underwritten by the fact that the area is one of South Africa’s eight world heritage sites. Because Limpopo borders Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, the province is considered the gateway into Africa. Limpopo is an area of exquisite natural beauty and contrasting landscape. It boasts spectacular mountain scenery and is teeming with wildlife. So much so that 80% of South Africa’s game hunting industry is found in Limpopo. The province has more than 54 provincial game lodges and an array of luxury game lodges. The majestic baobab tree, with its short branches is a feature of this area. These trees are extremely large. So large in fact, that one of them is home to a pub. The biggest baobab tree in the world can be found in Limpopo. Limpopo has more than enough to satisfy your wildlife, landscape or luxury needs. Limpopo, definitely a place where you can exhale.

auteng, Sesotho for “Place of Gold” cannot have a more appropriate name. The history of the province can be tracked back to the 1800’s. Situated on the Highveld of South Africa, Gauteng is well- known for its mines, vibrant economy and political history. Even though the province is landlocked, this does not detract from the tourist appeal that the province has. There are too many other attractions that compensate for the absence of an ocean. Johannesburg, one of Gauteng’s major cities, is known as the economical capital of South Africa. The city has a lively, cosmopolitan feel to it. For many tourists, it is the gateway to South Africa and even Africa. Add to this the fact that Soweto, an Apartheidsera township, is in close vicinity, it becomes
comprehensible why there is a natural pull towards this city. Soweto is home to Vilakazi Street. This street’s claim to fame is that both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu (two Nobel Peace Prize winners) lived here. Pretoria has long been known as the political capital of South Africa. The city is known for its historical buildings. A visit to the city cannot be complete without seeing the union buildings. For those with a more Palaeo - Anthropological interest a visit to the “Cradle of Humankind” cannot be missed. This is one of the eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa. Within this site can be found the Sterkfontein Caves where the famous “Mrs. Ples”, the first complete Australopithecus skull, amongst other skeletons, was found. ver heard of a game reserve that spans three countries. Ever heard of a place where you get the “Big Five” and the “Big Six” of the animal kingdom? If not, then it is obvious that you have not visited the Kruger National Park. The Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and the world. It covers areas of the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces in the north-eastern part of South Africa. Together with the Gonarezhou National Park of Zimbabwe and the Limpopo Park in Mozambique the Kruger National Park forms the” peace park” that spans these three countries. It is designated as an International Man and Biosphere reserve by UNESCO. For those who like to crunch the numbers, here’s something to entertain you. The park hosts
the following: 336 species of trees, 49 species of fish, 114 species of reptiles (including the Black Mamba), 507 species of birds (including the illusive Pel’s Fishing Owl) and 147 species of mammals. Hey here’s a challenge, see if you can spot all of them next time you go visit the park. In case you were wondering what the “Big Six” was, they are: the Lappet-faced Vulture, the Martial Eagle, the Saddled- billed Stork, the Kori Bustard, the Ground Hornbill and the Pel’s fishing owl. For those who are still wondering, they are all birds. This makes the park a unique place. You get two for the price of one. And if you think that you will have to tough it out in the wild, the park has wonderful lodges to cater to all you creature comforts. The Kruger National Park ,truly a unique place. SOUTHERN AFRICA

CAMP JABULANI
CAMP JABULANI
C
Here we nurture nature.
amp Jabulani represents the epitome of style, luxury, gastronomic excellence and warm hospitality. But at the heart of this five star operation lies a cause far greater than its tangible elements. This camp was conceptualized and created for one purpose. To support and sustain twelve elephants who by the hand of fate had found themselves in the custody of wildlife visionary, Lente Roode (founder and owner of the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre). The story began with an orphaned baby elephant, Jabulani (meaning “rejoice”). At four months of age, he was found stuck in a silt dam 100kms north of Hoedspruit, abandoned by his herd. Over a period of a year he was slowly nursed back to health. News then reached Lente of 12 trained Zimbabwean elephants who faced a grisly fate. Their owner’s farm was in the process of being expropriated - they were tagged for their meat. A rescue mission was orchestrated and in just three weeks, all 12 animals were moved to South Africa. The next logical step was in the creation of a camp to support the herd. This camp would enable travelers from all over the world to experience the extraordinary impact of interacting with elephants. Camp Jabulani was born. Each of the 6 ultra luxurious suites has a private plunge pool and deck area. Within the suite is a lounge area with fireplace, a free standing stone bath tub and double vanity, a glass enclosed shower within the surrounding bush, and a separate WC. The Zindoga Villa is ideally for the family traveller, smaller groups or those who seek complete privacy and exclusivity. Activities include daily elephant back safaris with expert grooms and handlers; game drives
in open safari vehicles; visits to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre and simple relaxation around the camp or in the “Bush Spa”. For more information you can log onto the website www.campjabulani.com The HoedspruitEndangered Species Centre is a must on any visitor’s itinerary. Not only does it present a fascinating insight into rare and vulnerable animal species and animal conservation efforts at large, it offers fun and interactive tours, drives, and excursions. It has a range of accommodation options for visitors looking for a longer stay - an ideal base from which to explore the area. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (www.hesc.co.za) focuses on the conservation of rare, vulnerable or endangered animals. Cheetah Conservation is one of their core disciplines, however the Centre is actively involved in: • The breeding of endangered, vulnerable or rare animal species • The release and establishment of captive-bred cheetahs to the wild • The treatment and rehabilitation of orphaned or injured animals which are brought to the Centre • The education of learners, students and the general public in conservation and conservation activities • Eco-tourism • A hands-on Student’s Programme to conservation and adventure enthusiasts from around the world.

here was a time that the word Zulu would conjure up images of warriors, war and tradition. KwaZulu-Natal is still known as the home of the Zulu, but the province of Kwazulu- Natal offers much more than just the image of a Zulu impi (warrior) in full regalia. The province is known as the garden province of South Africa. So beautiful is the scenery of KwaZuluNatal that the writer Alan Paton used it as an introduction of his novel ‘Cry, the Beloved Country.” Where else would you find a place with the name “Valley of a Thousand Hills”? Where else would you find a place that can do justice to that name? In KwaZulu-Natal of course! KwaZulu–Natal was formed by the old province of Natal and the homeland of KwaZulu (meaning place of the Zulu). KwaZulu-Natal is
steeped in political and geographical history. It is not only the birthplace of the Zulu king Shaka, but also the current South African president Jacob Zuma. The Zulu king Goodwill Swelithini still hold court in this province. The province plays host to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, namely the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park. As if this is not already reason enough to visit the province, it sports what is known as “the greatest shoal on earth” also known by its more common name, the Sardine Run. During mid- autumn, early winter, millions of sardines migrate from their spawning grounds towards the coast of the province. This again attracts game fish, sharks and dolphins. Add to this the many beautiful beaches, outdoor activities and so much more, it becomes easy to see why this province is one of the tourist destinations of South Africa. SOUTHERN AFRICA

Eastern Cape RUGGED BY APPEARANCE, SOPHISTICATED IN NATURE.

T
he Eastern Cape Province was formed out of the two Xhosa homelands of Transkei and Ciskei. It was the landing place and home of the British Settlers that landed in South Africa in 1820. It is also the birthplace of some of South Africa’s most prominent politicians and activists. People like Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, Oliver Tambo and the likes of Govan and Thabo Mbeki were all born here. The climate of the Eastern Cape varies depending on which side of the province you find yourself. On the western side the winters are frosty with hot summers. The eastern part of the province is wet, humid and almost subtropical. The coastline is rugged with 800km of untouched coastline to explore. The province also
hosts the only snow skiing resort, Tiffindell, near Rhodes. Whether you like surfing, taking long walks or taking a walk on the wild side, the Eastern Cape is the place for you. If you are more into the cultural side of things, Grahamstown is home to Africa’s biggest cultural event. Should you be into game watching, the Eastern Cape can accommodate you by sporting the Big Five namely: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and the African buffalo. Should you seek your thrill on the aquatic side of life, Jeffreys Bay, or J- Bay as it is known by locals, is definitely the place for you. Jeffreys Bay has some of the best “super tubes” South Africa has to offer and is a surfer’s paradise. For the divers, a visit to the Wild Coast with its graveyard of sea vessels and spectacular scenery is a “must” visit. The Eastern Cape; definitely a walk on the wild side.

T
he fourth largest province in South Africa, the Western Cape stretches 400km along the Atlantic Ocean north and 500km along the Indian Ocean east. The province is roughly L- shaped, with Cape Town as its crown jewel. However, the Western Cape is more than just Cape Town with its beautiful beaches and the majestic Table Mountain. The Western Cape is about the beautiful valley of Franschoek, the West coast with its friendly people, the Garden Route with its wonderful flora and the wide plains of the Karoo. Whether you find your pleasure in adventure, culture or the night life, the Western Cape has it all.

For those who love nature and the botanical side of nature, you will find one of the seven floral kingdoms almost exclusively endemic to the Western Cape. Fynbos (fine bush) has an array of beautiful flowers, amongst others, the beautiful Protea. With Cape Town being the mother city, there is no shortage of history: from Robben Island, to the slave quarters, to the castle and much more. For those who love aquatic adventures, the Western Cape, because of its jagged coastline, is custodian to a number of shipwrecks to explore. Experience a world in one province, experience the Western Cape!

HOME OF HAUTE CULTIVARS,
HAUTE CABRIERE With its unique food and wine offering, Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek is one of the most iconic destinations in the Cape Winelands.
C
radled by the Franschhoek Mountains, Haute Cabrière is deeply rooted in history. Following French tradition, the still wines are named after the property – Haute Cabrière - and the Méthode Classique range is named after the original founder, Pierre Jourdan - a French Huguenot, who was granted the land in 1694 and planted the first vines. Today, his pioneering spirit lives on in proprietor Achim von Arnim and his family, who have been sharing their passion for wine with their visitors since the early 1980s. In Achim’s hands, Haute Cabrière became the first winery in South Africa to dedicate itself

to producing wines according to the Méthode Cap Classique style - which is known in France as Méthode Champenoise - relying exclusively on the unique characteristics of the two noble cultivars, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. All Méthode Cap Classiques in the Pierre Jourdan range are fermented in the bottle and left in contact with the yeast for as long as possible, allowing the wine to develop extra charm and complexity. The fine natural mousse, produced by the fermentation in the bottle, is experienced like a feather on the tongue, turning the fine mousse into a burst of flavour.

The estate’s decomposed sandstone soils on the left side of the farm are ideal sites for Chardonnay, while the stony, clay-rich west facing slopes are perfect for Pinot Noir, which is known to be the world’s most demanding cultivar. Having successfully established the Pierre Jourdan range, Achim decided to utilise the farm’s full potential by producing still wines from these two cultivars. With this endeavour, the barrel matured Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir and elegant Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir were born. Later, the portfolio was extended with the revolutionary Haute Cabriere Unwooded Pinot Noir - a first for South Africa. Coinciding with the creation of these two wines, a new cellar was opened, specifically designed to suit the SOUTHERN AFRICA

requirements of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Sunk into the Franschhoek Mountain, it is entirely gravity fed, which helps to preserve the delicate aromas at the crucial first step of vinification. A sundial positioned at the entrance to the Haute Cabrière cellar, overlooking the vineyards, expresses Achim von Arnim’s philosophy that wine is grown, not made. Instead, wine is the result of the mystical synergy between sun, soil, vine and man.
THE TRUE MARRIAGE OF FOOD & WINE Fabulous wines naturally go well with fabulous food... Uniquely set into the mountainside on the Pass Road overlooking South Africa’s gourmet capital, Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant is a destination in its own right. All dishes are available in full and half portions, and all wines are available by the glass - allowing guests to enjoy an exciting array of taste sensations, described by Achim as the “dance of wine and food”.
HAUTE CABRIERE EDUCATION CENTRE As a result of Haute Cabriere’s commitment to the community, the Haute Cabriere Education Centre was founded in 2010. The Centre is situated on the estate and its sole purpose is to create a prosperous future for the children of Haute Cabriere’s employees. Under the guidance of a team of professional teachers, children of school-going age receive assistance with their homework in the afternoons, while the little ones receive day care from 07h00 in the morning. Apart from tutelage in reading and writing, the children’s artistic talents as well as their sporting abilities are nurtured. 48 | SOUTHERN AFRICA
