how to maintain a lawn A lush and healthy lawn is a beautiful part of a home landscape, and worth looking after. To maintain your lawn you must tailor a program suitable to your local conditions - your soil and grass type and the amount of rainfall you get.

AERATE YOUR SOIL PREPARATION Just like plants, grass needs light, water and air to grow and stay healthy. To improve the efficiency of these factors we recommend aerating. For minimum aeration you can clean the lawn well at the end of Autumn and give it a good raking every Spring. To further aerate the soil and root system, systematically poke holes in the ground. You may choose different aerating methods depending on your lawn size and involved expenses. The options are a garden fork, aerated shoes or a core aerator for large areas which can be hired. FEED YOUR LAWN Choosing your fertiliser is a personal choice as there are many brands to choose from. We can recommend a slow-release or organic fertiliser based on your soil’s needs and total area. Using organic fertiliser also will improve the health of your soil. To measure your grass area, divide your lawn into rectangular sections,

multiply the length by the width of each section, and add the results. You can do this simply by stepping out the area. Feed every 6-12 weeks, depending on the type of fertiliser you choose. PATCH BARE SPOTS Loosen the surface, then mix seed and lawn starter together. Rake into the surface and water regularly until you find sprouts beginning to emerge. CUT GRASS PROPERLY If the lawn is overgrown, mow it in two or more cuttings then add clippings to your compost bin or pile. Always use sharp mower blades and don’t cut a lawn when the grass is wet. Cut no more than 1/3 of the grass length at a time. WATERING YOUR LAWN A deep watering twice a week is best for your lawn as it encourages healthy root development. Repeated light watering brings roots to the surface and makes the lawn less drought-resistant.

Water your lawn to a depth of at least 2 inches in the early morning or late afternoon rather than midday. Sandy soils require frequent watering than rich heavy soils. Be sure to use an efficient watering system or a trigger spray gun. USE WEED AND INSECT CONTROL chemicals responsibly. The best time to apply chemicals is when the weeds are starting to grow, before they seed or when insects are active. Apply it with ready to use hose-end sprayer, which mixes liquid chemicals with water from your garden hose, with a garden spreader if you use granules, or mix the concentrate at the recommend dose & apply using a garden sprayer. Hints and tips The best time to fertilise is Spring. You can broadcast your fertiliser by hand, but you may get a more uniform coverage with a spreader. Once applying the fertiliser, water thoroughly, unless the directions state otherwise.

lancashire hotpot Feast your eyes on this Lancashire hotpot that even the saucepan lids will love! INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon olive oil 20g butter 4 (200g each) lamb forequarter chops 2 medium brown onions, sliced 2 medium carrots, peeled, sliced 4 sprigs fresh thyme 2 tablespoons plain flour 2 dried bay leaves 3 cups beef stock 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce 2 medium desiree potatoes, peeled, thinly sliced 20g butter, melted Finely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley leaves, to serve

METHOD Preheat oven to 180째C/160째C fanforced. Heat oil and butter in a 24cm (base) round, heavy-based, flameproof casserole dish over medium-high heat. Cook chops, in batches, for 2 to 3 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Add onion, carrot and thyme. Cook, stirring, for 4 to 5 minutes or until onion has softened. Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add bay leaves. Stir in stock and worcestershire sauce. Return chops to pan. Remove from heat. Arrange potatoes in an overlapping

pattern on top. Cover dish. Bake for 1 hour 30 minutes. Remove from oven. Increase temperature to 220째C/200째C fan-forced. Brush potatoes with melted butter. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until potatoes are golden and chops tender. Discard bay leaves and thyme sprigs. Serve sprinkled with parsley. Source: www.taste.com.au

sweet and sour chicken Kids — wok hard over a quick and easy stir-fry. INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup Alfa One rice bran oil 500g chicken tenderloins, cut into 3cm pieces 1 medium red onion, halved, cut into thin wedges 1/2 bunch baby (Dutch) carrots, peeled, trimmed, halved lengthways 1/2 small pineapple, peeled, chopped 125g cherry tomatoes, halved 250g jar sweet and sour stir-fry sauce 1 cup beansprouts, trimmed

Steamed jasmine rice, to serve METHOD Heat a wok over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil. Swirl to coat. Add half the chicken. Stir-fry for 3 minutes or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with 1 tablespoon oil and remaining chicken. Heat remaining oil in wok. Stir-fry onion for 2 minutes or until just softened.
