The Flanders poppy has long been a part of Remembrance Day, the ritual that marks the Armistice of 11 November 1918, and is also increasingly being used as part of Anzac Day observances. During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. In soldiers’ folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground.

ANZAC Day in Sydney ANZAC Day on April 25 is a national day of remembrance and commemoration. This solemn day remembers all Australians who have served and died in war and on operational service. The 25th marks the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) 1915 landing at Gallipoli in World War I. Dawn services, wreath laying, marches and commemorative services are held across Sydney and NSW. All are welcome, with the main Dawn Service held in Martin Place at The Cenotaph, which was sculpted by Sir Bertram Mackennal and unveiled in 1929. The Cenotaph service begins at 4.15am. Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. Australia’s most important national occasion is Anzac day which is recognised as a ritual occasion by New Zealanders and Australians. During the First World War Australian and New Zealand forces fought for the first military action. Anzac as a word is the acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps used to describe the combination of both army corps during World War I. On 25 April 2017 we mark the 102nd anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. The largest Anzac Day commemoration outside of Australia, is held at Gallipoli, Turkey. Gallipoli is a peninsula which is located in northwest coast of Turkey between Gulf of Saros and Dardanelles. Battle of Gallipoli was a combat

between the Central powers and Allied Powers and during this battle Gallipoli peninsula became the center of bloody war. Central powers were Germany, Ottoman Empire (modern Turkey), Hungary, Bulgaria; Allied Powers were Russia, France, Australia, USA, United Kingdom and Germany. In January 1915 Russia asked Britain and also France for assistance and the Gallipoli Campaign was born. Allied powers were extremely in need of an alternative route to Russia. Russia found itself isolated and it lacked modern weapons although had a large army. The plan of British and French armies was to force opening waterway to Allied shipping to allow Russia to receive weapons and munitions from its allies. SYDNEY CBD This year Sydney’s traditional Anzac Day March through the CBD will run down Elizabeth Street, leading those who take part directly to the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. The Sydney CBD will again have four key commemorative events this Anzac Day. 4:30am - Dawn Service (Cenotaph, Martin Place) - Dawn Service Map 9:00am – Anzac Day March (from Cenotaph, along Elizabeth Street to Hyde Park) 12:30pm - Commemoration Service (Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park) 5:00pm - Sunset Service (Cenotaph, Martin Place)

beef and mushroom bolognese Brimming full with hearty flavours, this beef and bolognese favourite is a real crowd pleaser. INGREDIENTS • 375g spaghetti or other pasta • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 500g beef mince • 150g button mushrooms, finely chopped • 575g jar tomato pasta sauce METHOD Step 1 Heat oil in a medium frying pan on high. Brown mince for 4-5 minutes, breaking up any lumps with the back of a spoon as it cooks. Step 2 Add mushrooms and cook, stirring for another 4-5 minutes, until mushrooms are tender.

Step 3 Stir in sauce and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Step 4 Meanwhile, cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water for 1012 minutes following packet instructions. Drain well. Step 5 Serve pasta topped with bolognese. Sprinkle with a little shaved parmesan and chopped parsley, if you like. Source: www.taste.com.au

INGREDIENTS • 1 Lebanese cucumber, cut into thin strips • 3 teaspoons sea salt • 1 1/2 cups spinach, blanched, excess liquid removed • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 1/4 teaspoons sesame seeds • 65g (1 cup) bean sprouts, blanched, excess liquid removed • 440g (2 cups) Sun Rice Sushi Rice • 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 2 carrots, peeled, cut into matchsticks • 300g lean beef mince • 4 eggs • Chilli sauce, to serve • Miso soup, to serve METHOD Step 1 Place the cucumber and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Add cold water to cover. Set aside for 20 minutes or until the cucumber softens slightly. Rinse and drain. Step 2 Combine the spinach, 2 teaspoons sesame oil, 1 teaspoon sesame seeds and 1

teaspoon of remaining salt in a bowl. Combine the bean sprouts and remaining sesame oil, sesame seeds and salt in a bowl. Step 3 Cook the rice following packet directions. Cover to keep warm. Step 4 Meanwhile, heat half the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the carrot, stirring, for 2-3 minutes or until just tender. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a bowl. Add the mince to the pan. Cook, stirring to break up any lumps, for 10 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a bowl and cover with foil to keep warm. Wipe the pan clean with paper towel. Step 5 Heat remaining vegetable oil in the pan over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook for 3 minutes or until cooked to your liking. Step 6 Divide the rice among serving bowls and arrange the mince and vegetables on top. Top with eggs. Serve with chilli sauce and miso soup. Source: www.taste.com.au

how to prune trees Pruning can help your trees to grow strong and keep a good shape. Another reason to prune is to remove damaged branches, which allows for new growth and helps prevent viral, bacterial and fungal infections from entering the tree. We’ll show you how to prune correctly and how to avoid damaging the tree.

STEP 1

STEP 1. TRIM SMALLER BRANCHES WITH SECATEURS Before you start put on your safety glasses and gloves. Secateurs are like spring-loaded scissors and have a locking system to keep the blades shut while you’re not using them. Start by cutting off small branches near the base of the tree. You can also use the secateurs for low hanging small branches. STEP 2. CUT MEDIUM BRANCHES WITH YOUR HANDSAW Ideally the blade on your handsaw will be very sharp, so it’s important to work carefully. You can use a handsaw to cut any protruding or lower level branches too big for the secateurs. Cut the branch off close to the tree trunk and avoid cutting the main trunk. Make sure you cut the branch on an angle that protrudes slightly off the trunk. STEP 3. PRUNE HARD TO REACH BRANCHES Use your pole pruner’s lever action to cut hard to reach branches. For thicker branches, there are attachments for the pole pruner, including a saw, that you can also be used to cut branches higher in the tree.

STEP 4. PRUNE THICKER BRANCHES WITH LOPPERS Loppers are like giant secateurs used for pruning big branches. They are designed to give you more leverage and makes it a lot easier to cut through thicker branches. STEP 5. CUT THICKER BRANCHES USING AN UNDERCUT Undercuts are used to remove large branches, that if you cut it from the top, the weight would snap it off. This can lead to tears in the bark and expose the tree to diseases. To undercut, start under the branch and saw upwards until you have cut halfway through. Then saw down from the top of the branch, starting about 3-5 cm up from the undercut. Keep sawing until the weight of the branch pulls it away from the tree. Tidy up the tree by cutting from the top of the remaining branch, away from the trunk, all the way through.
