Drawn from the Gallery’s collection, the works in this exhibition speak of the complex, ongoing attachments to country held by Aboriginal people. Included are sculptural representations of Mimih, Purukapali and the Djang’kawu – important figures who take human form in particular
areas of northern Australia – alongside images of the Wanka (spider) and Kanpaarka (centipede) that are drawn from the desert regions. There are also more abstracted depictions whose optical effects capture the movement and reverberations that are enacted across country by such forces as the Tingari. Many of these works can be considered self-portraits, such is the attachment between their maker and those to whom they are giving visual form. As artist Emily Kam Ngwarray famously exclaimed, ‘I am the yam’. fruit jellies Here are two delicious fruit jellies to suit everyone’s taste after dinner. INGREDIENTS Orange & blue berry jellies • 500ml fresh apple and mango juice • 4 1/2 teaspoons gelatine powder • 6 small navel oranges, halved • 1 cup (140g) fresh or thawed frozen blueberries Cranberry & strawberry jellies • 500ml white cranberry strawberry fruit drink • 4 1/2 teaspoons gelatine powder • 6 small naval oranges, halved • 1/2 punnet (125g) strawberries, hulled, chopped
METHOD Step 1 Bring 200ml of juice to the boil. Stir in gelatine, whisking with a fork until dissolved. Add remaining juice, and stir until well combined. Step 2 With a small knife, cut around the orange between the flesh and skin. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Stand orange cups in muffin trays. Step 3 Spoon blueberries or strawberries into orange cups. Pour over jelly mixture and refrigerate for 3-4 hours, or until set. Serve cold.

fruit loaf INGREDIENTS • 150g dried apricots • 150g dried figs • 150g pitted dates • 150g raisins • 2 cups orange juice • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 2 cups White Wings Self-Raising Flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • butter, to serve

METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 7cm deep, 10cm x 21cm (base) loaf pan with baking paper. Step 2 Combine dried fruit and juice in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring,

for 20 minutes or until liquid has been absorbed. Stir in bicarbonate of soda. Set aside for 10 minutes. Step 3 Transfer fruit mixture to a bowl. Stir in sugar and eggs. Sift flour and spices over fruit mixture. Stir gently to combine. Spoon into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Step 4 Stand for 10 minutes in pan. Turn onto a wire rack to cool. Serve slices at room temperature or toasted, spread with butter. Source: www.taste.com.au

how to enjoy your outdoor area in winter Even if the weather is cold, you can still enjoy your outdoor area just as much as your indoors. There are plenty of ways to keep it warm and protected so that you can let the good times roll on all through winter. ROOFING Before you even think about heating, you need to protect yourself from the elements. Covering your outdoor entertaining area with a permanent roof will shelter you from rain and wind. Corrugated zinc steel roofs come in colours to suit any home. But you can also get translucent polycarbonate roofing in a range of colours, including clear, to let in more natural light.
You can also install a shade cloth or shade sail, which are easy to put up and relatively inexpensive. OUTDOOR HEATING There are a number of ways to heat your outdoor area, from installing a slow combustion wood heater to building your own fireplace. If those options are too big, there are fire pits and chimeneas that come in a range of sizes and styles to suit, and they can be easily moved to wherever want them. Freestanding gas heaters come in a range of sizes – large enough to warm all of your outdoor area or small enough to put on your table. There’s also a huge selection of electric outdoor heaters to choose from – large and medium sized freestanding ones, while others can be mounted on the wall or ceiling.
HEAT AND EAT Cooking outside with a BBQ or pizza oven will warm up your outdoor area, plus your family and friends get to enjoy some of your delicious home cooking. KEEP THE HEAT IN Enclosing your outdoor area will keep more of the heat in. Bistro blinds are easy to install, and will keep the wind and rain out of your outdoor area.
