The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is Australia’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian culture
– from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. The Wynne Prize is awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery, or figure sculpture, while the Sulman Prize is given to the best subject painting, genre painting or mural project in oil, acrylic, watercolour or mixed media. BIRD WATCHING When: Every day Where: Sydney Olympic Park More than 200 native bird species have been recorded at Sydney Olympic Park, making it an excellent choice for bird watching opportunities without leaving the city. The size of the Park and its diverse habitats support migratory, nomadic and resident birds of all colours, sizes and shapes. Shrubby areas provide habitat for small woodland birds, such as the Superb Fairy-wren, Double-barred Finch, Spotted Pardalote, Grey Fantail and Red-browed Finch. The riverside walkway is a good place to spot White-bellied Sea-Eagles; or scan the skies over grassy areas for birds of prey such as the Black-shouldered Kite and Nankeen Kestrel. Well known as a destination for bird watching, the Park offers species at the edge of their geographical range such as the Red-rumped Parrot and Mangrove Gerygone and species that are declining in urban areas including Finches, Shy Crakes, Rails and Thornbills. Enjoy a walk around wetland hotspots such as the Waterbird Refuge and Lake Belvedere to enjoy both resident and migratory waterbirds. The estuarine Waterbird Refuge plays host to Red-necked Avocet, Black-winged Stilts and many species of duck whereas the freshwater Lake Belvedere is home to a breeding colony of cormorants and Darters. A list of all bird species recorded at Sydney Olympic Park between 2000 and 2014 can be downloaded. Remember that feeding of wildlife in Sydney Olympic Park is not permitted as feeding changes bird behaviour, can make animals ill and encourages aggressive species. WAR AT SEA – THE NAVY IN WWI When: 8 August to 29 September 2017 Where: Hawkesbury Central Library, 300 George Street, Windsor Over one hundred years ago, on 14 September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or the 35 crew has ever been found. This story is now being told in War at Sea – the Navy in WWI, an eight panel exhibition at Hawkesbury Central Library, Windsor, on tour from the Australian National Maritime Museum, from Tuesday, 8 August to Friday, 29 September, during opening hours. This panel exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy service staff through their diaries, mementoes, ship’s logs and letters home, to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships. Working almost exclusively in oils on canvas, he has gradually developed a style that highlights an abstract dimension which he identifies as central to his vision of the bush. The result of this harmonisation of style and subject matter is a body of work which some perceive as abstract and others as representational. In fact, these paintings hover between those two poles and play on the tension that this dual vision creates in the eye of the viewer. He regards his paintings as ‘incomplete’, awaiting the participation of the viewer. Keith Betts was the winner of the Waterbrook Trendsetter Travel Prize for 2010 for ‘Growth’ and was a finalist in the 2011 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the richest art prize in Australia and the richest portrait prize in the world, for his painting ‘The Inner Ear: Susan Blake with Gerard Willems’. Harris has intuitively incorporated this linear element in ever increasing ways over the last three years, layering it onto a more organic ground. The motif signifies her immediate environment in its most basic form – whether vertical or horizontal the strips describe features such as: her studio louvre window, musical scores, birdsong, garden elements and the weather. This motif also references Harris’ process of stripping back any recognisable imagery or formalist structure from the canvas and allowing the paint residue to create the final work. aesthetic concept of Wabi-sabi which looks at the beauty of imperfection and impermanence especially with regard to the natural world. With this in mind she paints intuitively allowing her physical surrounds to flavour the work: she is directly influenced by the seasons, her studio, the music she chooses and sounds from outside. Harris has a long history of non-intentional painting, she allows the substance of the work to reveal itself without a predetermined outcome in mind. The colours and texture of the paint find their own form, in this way her paintings are a collaboration with the natural environment. Vegie Burgers Get the kids to love their vegetables with these healthy burgers that are so simple to make. INGREDIENTS • 500g coliban potatoes, peeled, quartered • 1/2 cup frozen baby peas • 2 medium carrots, peeled, finely grated • 100g button mushrooms, finely chopped • 1/4 cup plain flour • 3/4 cup seasoned stuffing mix • 1/4 cup vegetable oil • 6 white bread rolls, halved • 6 butter lettuce leaves • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced • 6 slices tasty cheese • 1/3 cup Baxters Tomato Chutney with Red Pepper

METHOD Step 1 Cook potatoes in a saucepan of boiling, salted water for 8 minutes. Add peas. Boil for 2 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain. Remove to a bowl. Mash well. Add carrots, mushrooms and flour. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Step 2 Using your hands, shape potato mixture into 6 patties. Place stuffing mix on a plate. Coat patties in stuffing mix. Step 3 Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook patties, in batches, for 2 minutes each side or until golden and heated through. Drain on paper towel. Step 4 Top bun bases with lettuce, tomato, patties, cheese, chutney and bun tops. Serve. Source: www.taste.com.au
Fish Burgers Serve these tasty fish burgers with oven baked chips and lemon wedges for a complete mid-week meal. INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup plain flour • 2 eggs • 2 1/2 cups fresh white breadcrumbs • 1 tablespoon lemon pepper (see note) • 700g whiting fillets (see note), bones and skin removed • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 40g butter, chopped • 4 hot dog buns, split, toasted • 80g baby rocket • 1/2 cup tartare sauce • oven-baked chips and lemon wedges, to serve

METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 150°C. Place flour on a plate. Lightly beat eggs in a shallow bowl. Combine breadcrumbs and lemon pepper on a plate. Step 2 Coat fish, 1 fillet at a time, in flour. Dip into egg, followed by breadcrumb mixture, gently pressing crumbs on with your fingertips. Transfer to a large plate. Step 3 Heat oil and butter in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook fish, in batches, for 2 minutes each side or until cooked through. Transfer to a baking tray. Keep warm. Step 4 Top hot dog bun bases with rocket, fish fillets, tartare sauce and bun tops.
