TOKYO FRUITS – 20 YEARS OF STREET FASHION When: Until 16 September 2017 Where: The Japan Foundation, Sydney From colourful decora to neo-goths and cyber-punks, influential street fashion publication FRUiTS Magazine told stories from Harajuku, the creative centre of Tokyo fashion, for over twenty years. The Tokyo FRUiTS exhibition will map the myriad of trends and multiple identities of Tokyo fashion, through a selection of photographs from the publication. The exhibition will also feature an immersive installation of a Harajuku room, produced by researcher Megan Rose. Developed in 1997 in response to Harajuku’s bourgeoning experimental street fashion boom, FRUiTs magazine (led by photographer Shoichi Aoki) documented the colourful characters that defined the creative and fun identity of Tokyo’s youth culture. Twenty years on, the palette of street fashion has evolved to a simpler aesthetic, with a stronger Western influence, and the FRUiTs publication drew to a close. This exhibition traces the movement from Decora girl gangs, Lolita, and Urahara kei, through to the more recent trends of Neo Gyaru, Nu Goth, and the Simple Boom. For more information visit jpf.org.au DOWN THE BARREL: INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE & ALL MATTER HAS A PAST When: Until 26 August 2017 Where: Verge Gallery Gallery 1 :: Down the Barrel: Indigenous Resistance :: Elaine Syron :: Curated by Rebekah Raymond Down the Barrel: Indigenous Resistance is a solo exhibition of works by Elaine Syron. Syron’s photographs capture Indigenous resistance in and around Sydney over the past four decades. From grassroots movements to mass protests, her photographs document moments that changed history, united mobs and paved the way for future generations. Down the Barrel: Indigenous Resistance begins with Elaine’s rarely-seen photographs and expands to posters and archival documents from 1972 to today. The exhibition embraces the connections and tangents of history and storytelling. The exhibition title Down the Barrel alludes to the photographic medium and immersive style used by Syron. This title speaks to the very real dangers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples then and now. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should be aware that this exhibition contains images and names of deceased persons in photographs, film, and printed material. Tokyo Fruits – Shoichi Aoki, FRUiTS magazine THE PUBLIC BODY .02 When: Until 2 October 2017 Where: Art Space The second exhibition in a three-part speculation on one idea, this year THE PUBLIC BODY .02 brings together the work of over forty artists and collectives from the 1970s to the present, integrating the archival and the contemporary to draw connections between works across decades. Extending on THE PUBLIC BODY .01’s exploration of contemporary representations of the body and, in particular, the naked and/or sexualised body, the second iteration delves further back to highlight a range of practices embedded in feminist, queer and anti-racist subjectivities. The

Some take refuge in the safety and power of distinct communities and networks, while others struggle to free themselves from the dictates of systems that reduce and subjugate. within her installations to reveal the opposing durational qualities of stillness, temporality and flux. She explores different forms of timekeeping, with the ceramic elements revealing gestures of everyday objects within a static form; the moving images convey a sense of compressed time; and the plant works, created through a labour intensive process, will change with time and alter colour, shape and texture. The combination of these diverse mediums allow time to be reimagined from a linear formation into a more malleable substance. Aussie Burgers Dish up an Aussie burger classic with all the extra trimmings for a victorious dinner. INGREDIENTS
• 500g beef mince • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 4 WeetBix, crushed • 1/3 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 4 large slices tasty cheese • 4 rashers bacon, rind removed, halved crossways

• 4 hamburger buns, split, toasted • 1/3 cup whole-egg mayonnaise • 3 iceberg lettuce leaves, finely shredded • 2 tomatoes, thinly sliced • 4 slices canned beetroot • 4 canned pineapple rings
METHOD Step 1 Combine mince, red onion, Weet-Bix, parsley, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, egg and salt and pepper in a large bowl. Using clean hands, shape mixture into four 2cm-thick patties. Place on a plate. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Step 2 Preheat oven to 150°C. Heat oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook patties for 3 minutes each side or until almost cooked through. Step 3 Transfer patties to a baking tray. Top with cheese. Place in oven for 5 minutes or until cheese melts. Step 4 Meanwhile, add bacon to pan. Increase heat to high and cook for 2 minutes each side or until crisp. Step 5 Spread hamburger bun bases with mayonnaise. How to install a rotary clothesline
STEP 1
Find out how to install a clothesline properly so that stands strong and straight in the ground. We’ll show you how to concrete the pole into the ground. And a simple way to keep the pole straight while the concrete dries. Step 1. Dig a hole for the rotary clothesline Choose a spot to install your clothesline. You’ll need an area with at least a six-metre diameter. Then dig a hole in the centre for the pole. Your instructions will tell you how deep it needs to be – in our case it is 250mm wide and 650mm deep. Step 2. Set the level of the sleeve for the rotary clothesline in the ground Fill the bottom of the hole with approx. 200mm of builders screenings. Then push the pole sleeve about 100mm into the screenings. Make sure that the top of the sleeve is at ground level. In our case, it is sitting a little low, so we add a bit more screening to top up the hole. Once the sleeve is in place, tip in a few more handfuls of screening for extra support.

Step 3. Hammer pickets into the ground to support the rotary clothesline pole Starting a metre out from the hole, hammer in three star pickets about 300mm the ground, equal distances apart. These will help support the clothesline post while the concrete sets. When you hammer them in, angle them away from the hole to give them added strength. Step 4. Install and straighten the pole for the rotary clothesline Remove the cap from the sleeve and slide the pole in. Then tie ropes around the middle of the pole and loosely secure them to the three star pickets. Now adjust and tighten the ropes using your spirit level to make sure the pole stands perfectly straight.

Step 5. Concrete the pole for the rotary clothesline Wet down the hole with a hose. Now fill the hole with quick-dry concrete mix and use the hose to soak the mix thoroughly. While the concrete is still wet, double check that your pole is standing straight and make any final adjustments. Then leave the concrete to set. Step 6. Install the top of the rotary clothesline Once the concrete is set, untie the ropes and pull the star pickets out of the ground. Then lift up the top of the clothesline and slide it into the pole. To finish off, follow the instructions to release the arms, fold them out into a horizontal position and lock them in place.
