Each physical element related to philosophical, mythological and cosmological concepts. Aboriginal culture recognises the infinity of relationships between all of the elements, and their shaping of human activities, cultures and beliefs. In the immensity of the Blue Mountains natural environment, the elements of earth, water, air and fire surround us. In our daily experience, we live with the grand scale of canyons and etched peaks, changing atmospherics over endless forests, spectacular cascades and reflective pools, torrents of rain and gentle mist, always anticipating the destruction and renewal created by fire. BMAN represents approximately 100 established and emerging artists within the Blue Mountains region. In German-occupied Amsterdam during World War II, the Frank family has gone into hiding with another Jewish family in the attic of Otto Frank’s warehouse in order to escape persecution and imprisonment. For two years, eight people live in one room, in fear of their lives, and 13-year old Anne documents their existence in forensic detail. Through her precocious eyes are revealed the petty disputes, the personality clashes, the shared little pleasures: until, betrayed, they are discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne, her sister and mother all perished, but her father survived and published his daughter’s diary as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. MANDY MARTIN: HOMEGROUND When: 16 September – 12 November 2017 Where: Orange Regional Gallery This survey focuses on work created since Mandy Martin came to live in Mandurama in Central Western NSW. The 20 works chosen for this exhibition reflect 20 years in the region, and address Martin’s deep unease about the landscape in which we live. Environmental issues relating to water security, the impact of the region’s coal-fired power stations and open cut mines are central concerns. The exhibition includes two recent collaborative video projects with artist and curator Alexander Boynes, that continue these investigations and follow Russian film maker Sergei Eisenstein’s proposition that between nature and industry lies art. Asian Chicken, Corn and Noodle Soup Just six ingredients is all you need for this speedy, budget-friendly Asian chicken noodle soup! INGREDIENTS
• 1/4 cup Malaysian curry paste • 2 green onions, thinly sliced • 425g can corn kernels, drained • 2 cups shredded barbecued chicken (see note)
• 4 cups Campbell’s Real Stock Chicken Salt Reduced
• 220g shelf-fresh Singapore noodles
METHOD Step 1 Heat a large, non-stick saucepan over medium heat. Add curry paste and half the onion. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant. Step 2 Add corn, chicken, 1 cup cold water and stock. Bring to the boil. Add noodles. Simmer for 5 to 6 minutes or until noodles are tender. Serve sprinkled with remaining onion. Meatball, Vegetable & Couscous Soup This hearty meatball soup is a great option with leftover potential, whether it be for your work lunchbox or the freezer. INGREDIENTS
• 550g pork and veal mince • 1/3 cup parmesan, shredded • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped • 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves • 1 egg, lightly whisked • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 brown onion, finely chopped • 2 zucchini, finely chopped • 1 celery stick, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 x 400g cans Italian diced tomatoes • 4 cups Campbell’s Real Stock Chicken • 1/3 cup couscous • Extra shredded parmesan and chargrilled Photography by Rob Palmer

How to make the most of natural light Increasing the amount of natural light in your home can actually reduce your heating and lighting costs. It also makes rooms seem bigger and more inviting. Here are some simple and inexpensive ways to get more natural light into your home. WINDOWS, CURTAINS AND BLINDS On sunny days, open curtains and blinds to let in as much light as possible. Replacing heavy curtains with a lighter or seethrough material helps to let in more light during the day and keeps in the heat at night. Aluminium or wooden venetian blinds and vertical blinds come in a range of colours and let you control the amount of light that comes in. By angling the blinds, you direct the sunlight to where you want it. And if you’re building or renovating, make sure that you design your windows to be taller rather than wider, which lets in more light. MIRRORS Use mirrors to reflect natural light and open up small spaces like hallways. Placing a mirror opposite a window that gets good light will make a room sunnier. As well as hanging mirrors on the wall, you can put them on your wardrobe door or on a desk
behind flowers to create the feeling of more space. Place your mirrors in a number of rooms around the home to find out what reflects the most natural light, before permanently installing them. NEW DOORS Replacing a solid front door with one that has stained, clear or frosted glass gives you a brighter and more inviting entry room. Changing a solid interior door for one with window panels also lets more light in. There’s a range of doors with stained glass, clear and frosted panels that can work for you depending on your budget, security requirements and tastes. SKYLIGHTS Installing skylights in hallways or small rooms with no windows lets in more light and makes it feel bigger. Skylight kits are inexpensive and easy to install. Another option is to install a dual
action window and skylight higher up on your wall to let in more light and fresh air. COLOUR SCHEME Painting walls and ceilings white, or in light colours, means that any natural light that comes in will be reflected. White painted trim around the window also helps. REMOVE OBSTACLES Trim any trees and bushes that may be blocking the light through your windows. Removing objects from your windowsills and keeping your windows clean also increases the amount of light coming in. INDOOR PLANTS Growing plants or herbs indoors is a great way to make sure that you let more natural light into your rooms to keep them healthy. You’ll also get the added bonus of a year round supply of fresh flowers, vegetables or herbs.
