LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL When: Until Sunday 8 October 2017 Where: Palace Norton Street The Italian Film Festival was founded in 2000 by Antonio Zeccola who, in one of Australia’s many migrant success stories, built Australia’s only national boutique cinema network, which now encompasses more than one hundred screens nationally. Eighteen years ago, Antonio realised that Australia had other film festivals but nothing dedicated to Italian cinema, and an idea was born. In November 2000 in Sydney and Melbourne, the first edition presented 11 features, five retrospective titles and five shorts, including Opening Night selection Bread and Tulips (Pane e Tulipani) by Silvio Soldini and One Hundred Steps (I cento passi) directed by Marco Tullio Giordana. The event was a resounding success. Spurred by audience demand, the second Italian Film Festival expanded nationally in 2001 to Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, with the Opening Night selection Malena starring Monica Bellucci, the Centrepiece The Son’s Room (La stanza del figlio) directed by Nanni Moretti and Closing Night Selection The Last Kiss (L’ultimo bacio) directed by Gabriele Muccino. Since then the festival has grown and grown in popularity, to the point where it is now the biggest public celebration of Italian cinema outside Italy. The event has partnered with many organisations and cultural partners over the years, however the most longstanding relationship has been with LAVAZZA who have now been the Festival’s Principal Sponsor for 14 continuous years. OLD BAR BEACH FESTIVAL 2017 When: 30 September – 2 October 2017 Where: Old Bar Road, Taree NSW The Old Bar Beach Festival is an annual community event that has grown to attract more than 30,000 people each year. The Kombi/Transporter swap meet Australian record attempt is one of the major highlights of the festival. The number of Kombis that arrive at the festival has steadily increased over the last ten years due to the support of many Kombi owners who now have made the festival an annual pilgrimage. For Kombi owners this festival is a place to meet and share their passion for their beloved buses with like-minded Kombi enthusiasts in a relaxed and festive atmosphere suited for the whole family. Each year we look at what we can do to make the festival even better. In 2012 we added a spectacular fireworks display, hosted by Ka-Boom Fireworks and introduced more children’s entertainment. In 2013 we had more professional bands and artists and this year Saltwater Board Riders Club will host the Kev Lee Memorial Single Fin Cup and wrapping up the festival on Sunday afternoon will be Taree Old Bar Surf Life Savings Club’s beer, burger and footy grand final afternoon. We’ve changed the layout of the festival to make it easier to find all of those great market stalls and displays and to give a better view of the main stage. Johnson juxtaposes various mediums within her installations to reveal the opposing durational qualities of stillness, temporality and flux. She explores different forms of timekeeping, with the ceramic elements revealing gestures of everyday objects within a static form; the moving images convey a sense of compressed time; and the plant works, created through a labour intensive process, will change with time and alter colour, shape and texture. Soft Breakfast Tacos Give your dad’s breakfast a Mexican twist with these soft tacos filled with vine-ripened tomatoes and creamy scrambled eggs. INGREDIENTS • 2 vine-ripened tomatoes, seeds removed, finely chopped • 1 red chilli, seeds removed, finely chopped • 1/4 cup sliced coriander leaves • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 4-6 drops Tabasco sauce (optional) • 4 white-flour tortillas • 8 eggs, lightly beaten • 1/4 cup (60ml) pure (thin) cream

METHOD Step 1 For the salsa, combine tomato, chilli, half the coriander and 2 teaspoons of oil. Add Tabasco if desired, and season to taste. Step 2 Wrap the stacked tortillas in paper towel, place on a plate and microwave on high for 1 minute. Turn stack and heat for a further 30 seconds. Or heat in the oven according to packet directions.

Step 3 Lightly whisk the eggs with the cream and remaining coriander. Season. Heat remaining oil in a large pan over medium-high heat, pour in eggs and, using a wooden spoon, fold for 2 minutes until scrambled and almost set. Remove from the heat. Working with one tortilla at a time (keep the rest covered as you work), spoon some egg down the centre, top with salsa and fold over the sides to enclose. Secure with a paper napkin if desired, and serve with any remaining salsa on the side. Source: www.taste.com.au

How to hang pendant lights The right light can transform a room, but how do you hang a pendant light correctly? Pendant lights can perform a variety of functions. From task lighting to a statement piece, the right light can give a room a distinct personality. But how do you hang a pendant light correctly? Is there a set of guidelines to follow or is it a case of whatever goes? Bunnings’ Lighting Buyer Kelly Squibb has the following advice. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Is the pendant a feature or is its role more functional? Maybe it’s a bit of both. Whether your pendant is intended to provide task (lighting a specific area, usually a workspace), accent (throwing light on a particular feature) or ambient (background or general) lighting will dictate where you place your fixture in the room. HOW HIGH (OR LOW) SHOULD A PENDANT LIGHT HANG? Get this wrong and it could throw out the balance of your room. The height you hang your pendant will depend not only on the height of your ceiling but also what is beneath the light – furniture or open space – and its intended use. If the pendant/s are hung above a piece of furniture, and there’s no chance anyone can bump their head, then it can be hung a bit lower to create a cosy feel. When hanging pendants beside a bed, these should be hung at the same height that a bedside lamp would sit, allowing enough room to put things on the bedside table. The other thing you need to consider here is light projection. The lower you hang a pendant light, the shallower the light projection will be.

Also, the shape of the pendant will also impact light projection – the wider the pendant the greater the light projection. Ask your electrician to hold the pendant at different heights or locations until you’re completely happy with its position. It’s difficult to gauge whether or not you’ve got it right by holding the pendant up yourself. Your electrician will also be across legislation for minimum heights over wet areas to ensure safety. The following heights can be used as a guide only (they may not work in every setting): • Above a kitchen bench: 55–70cm above the benchtop • Above a dining table: 70–82cm above the tabletop • Above bedside tables: 40–55cm, above the bedside tabletop THE RIGHT SIZE FOR THE SPACE Check your space – the pendant you select needs to sit comfortably within its surrounds. To visualise, ask someone to hold up a rough cardboard profile to get a better idea of how the light will fill the space. It’s a good idea to take photos so you can compare different positions. Large pendants can make a great statement

and become a focal point. Or try creating additional impact with smaller pendants by hanging more than one in a cluster, at the same or different heights, or in a row. Many pendants are available in range families. For example, small pendants hung as a set of three over a kitchen bench or dining table, or one large pendant in a stairwell. GET THE LOOK There are myriad styles of pendants on the market – from statement pieces to more subtle designs. Also, the material you choose will go a long way to help setting the mood in your room. Choose concrete or metal for a more modern or industrial look, or try natural materials for a beach or modern scandi style. Glass and woven or slatted shades appear more open and throw out reflected light and shadows, creating a great effect. DON’T GO IT ALONE Always get a qualified electrician to complete any electrical work on your home. If you are not a qualified electrician, then performing electrical work is not only illegal but very dangerous.
