WINNING SKY PHOTOS 2017: THE DAVID MALIN AWARDS When: Until 29 October 2017 Where: Sydney Observatory See spectacular, award-winning photographs of the night sky from the last 12 months as judged by world-renowned astrophotographer Dr David Malin in this free exhibition. Among the photographs on display this year is the stunning image shown above showcasing a special evening above Calverts Beach on the South Arm Peninsula of Tasmania as red airglow hits the sky. Other photographs on display show the three distinct nebulae in the Tail of Scorpius, comets travelling close to earth, stunning mosaics capturing the brightest part of our Milky Way, the Emu amongst several other significant stars, constellations and clusters, plus so much more. THE RED TREE When: 19 – 28 October 2017 Where: Riverside Theatres A piece of music theatre Based on the book by Shaun Tan When the dice is always loaded against you how do you move forward? Join us for an extraordinary journey to a world of imagination where origami boats take you on an ocean voyage, giant fish host musical interludes, and parades pass you by. This is the story of a young girl living inside her bedroom and how she conquers her fears and anxieties, finally embracing hope and taking control of the world that has always been around her. The Red Tree is a new work of music theatre. National Theatre of Parramatta has commissioned writer Hilary Bell and songrwriter and composer Greta Gertler Gold to adapt Shaun Tan’s award-winning book, directed by Neil Gooding. The score fuses pop, classical and traditional musical theatre elements with sound design and digital recording technology in an exciting, contemporary fashion. Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree won the Patricia Wrightson prize in the NSW Premier’s

Book Awards, and was awarded the ‘le Prix Octogones 2003’ prize by the Centre International d’Etudes en Literature de Jeunesse, following its translation into French. Throughout this process, these artists have been mentored by established artists and curators including Karla Dickens, Blak Douglas, Jason Wing, R E A, Jonathon Jones, Nicole Monks, Chico Monks, Emily McDaniel and Khaled Sabsabi in order to gain confidence and trust in their practice.

Since the establishment of the Left Field Project three years ago, this exhibition will be the first time for some of these artists to produce works independent of and beside their mentors as equals for a group exhibition. In response to Faith as a person and faith as a concept, the artists will present newly commissioned works that speak of their lived experiences since this landmark event in Australian political, social and cultural history. United by their reference to historical works of literature and art, these prints were produced during the first two decades of Hockney’s career when he established his international reputation as a Pop artist. A selection of Hockney’s more personal works from the private collection of his brother John Hockney will accompany the exhibition. Blue Mountains City Art Gallery is proud to present this major international exhibition in partnership with Tweed Regional Gallery. The exhibition will premiere at Tweed before travelling on to Katoomba. A touring exhibition by the British Council, presented at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery in partnership with Tweed Regional Gallery For more information visit bluemountainsculturalcentre.com.au EMU ISLAND: MODERNISM IN PLACE When: Until 19 November 2017 Where: Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest Once the home and studio of artists Margo and Gerald Lewers, the Gallery site was – and is today – a place of lively debate, artistic creation and exhibition at the foot of the Blue Mountains on the banks of the Nepean River. Coming up against the Nepean River, early settlers thought the land on the mountainside was an island inhabited by Emus hence ‘Emu Island’. The place was considered to be land’s end, but as the home of artists Margo

and Gerald Lewers it became the place for new beginnings. The Gallery site was an ‘island of modernism’ in the Australian suburbs. The Lewers’ home was founded on the principles of modernism – they lived, worked and entertained like-minded contemporaries set on fostering modernism as a holistic way of living. Curated by Dr Shirley Daborn together with consulting curator Dr Cassi Plate, Emu Island: Modernism in Place highlights the cultural significance of the Gallery’s history and site to Modernism in Australia. Emu Island: Modernism in Place in the Main Gallery showcases the work of the Lewers and their immediate contemporaries over the four-decade period of their residence (1942-1978). In this place, artists and friends gathered and were inspired by the energy and experimentation of the Lewers home, and beyond, by a rapidly changing world. The exhibition features works by those at the heart of Sydney Modernism such as: Margo and Gerald Lewers, Frank and Margel Hinder, Judy Cassab, John Olsen, Tony Tuckson, Carl Plate and Robert Klippel among others. Elsewhere on the site the legacy of Sydney modernism will be highlighted within the original historic home of Margo and Gerald Lewers, now known as the Lewers House Gallery. The work of eight young contemporary artists who continue to grapple with modernist ideals will be showcased in Young Moderns. These Artists include: Emma Beer, Terrence Combos, Sanne Koelemij, Mason Kimber, Nadia Odlum, Helen Shelley, Kael Stasce and Kate Tucker. In Ancher House, now known as the Modernist Research Centre, the work of the Gallery’s 2017 artist in residence Ian Milliss will be exhibited in Shifting Dirt. The artist

takes his place as the youngest member of the legendary 1960s artist venue, Central Street Gallery, which revolutionised abstract art practice in Sydney. Breakfast Beans on Toast Homemade baked beans on toast always tastes better with an egg on top! INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 2 rashers bacon, finally diced • 2 tablespoons Coles Brand Tomato Paste • 1 x 400g can tomatoes, diced • 1/3 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar • Cannellini beans, drained, rinsed • Thick sliced toast, to serve • 4 poached eggs, to serve

METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan. Heat oil in a large, heatproof casserole dish to medium heat. Cook onion and garlic until translucent. Step 2 Add bacon and cook for 3-4 mins. Add beans, tomato paste, tomatoes, sugar and vinegar, stir to combine and cook in oven for 1 hr, 45 mins. Step 3 Remove from oven, stir through beans and cook for a further 15 mins. Roasted Nectarine Breakfast Bruschetta Start this recipe a day ahead for a breakfast or brunch special enough to impress your guests. INGREDIENTS • 500g Coles Brand Greek-style Yoghurt • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/3 cup (80ml) dark agave syrup, or Coles Finest Pure Canadian Maple Syrup • 6 (about 1kg) ripe yellow nectarines, halved, stoned • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste • 1/2 sourdough baguette, thickly sliced diagonally, toasted • Baby mint leaves, to serve Equipment • You will need a sieve and cooking-grade muslin cloth for this recipe. METHOD Step 1 Combine the yoghurt, cardamom, 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 2 tbs agave or maple syrup

in a bowl. Line a sieve with muslin and place over a bowl. Spoon the yoghurt mixture into the sieve and lightly tie the edges together to enclose. Place the mixture in the fridge overnight to drain. Step 2 Meanwhile, preheat oven to 180C. Place nectarines, cut-side up, in a roasting pan. Combine the remaining agave or maple syrup with vanilla and remaining cinnamon. Drizzle over the nectarines. Roast for 25-30 mins or until tender. Set aside to cool slightly. Step 3 Spread the thickened yoghurt mixture over the toasted sourdough. Place on serving plates and top with nectarines. How to build a magazine rack

STEP 1

Create the rack that will keep all your magazines in place. You can put this simple project together in an afternoon.

STEP 2

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • 64mm x 19mm pine • 42mm x 19mm pine • Measuring tape • Pencil • Combination square • 30mm timber screws • 50mm screws • Power Drill • Drill Bit • Hammer drill (optional) • Masonry bit (optional) • Wall plugs (optional) • Timber Filler • Sandpaper • Spirit Level • Nylon wall anchors (optional) • Acrylic paint • Paint brush

STEP 4: ATTACH THE HORIZONTAL PIECES – PART ONE Start by securing the internal “packers” to the wall using 50mm screws. The first should be flush with the base of the verticals, the second starting about 400mm up (depending on the height of your magazines). STEP 5: ATTACH THE HORIZONTAL PIECES – PART TWO Once the internal “packers” are in place, secure the 530mm horizontal lengths over the top using 30mm timber screws.

STEP 1: CUT TIMBER Mark up and cut your timber. You’ll need two 650mm vertical pieces and four 530mm horizontal lengths of the 64mm x 19mm pine, plus two 400mm lengths of the 42mm x 19mm pine to use as internal “packers” that the magazines will rest on. STEP 2: SAND EDGES Round off the sharp edges of the timber with sandpaper. STEP 3: SECURE THE VERTICALS TO THE WALL Using a spirit level to make sure your verticals are perfectly straight, secure both pieces to your wall 400mm apart using 50mm screws. Handy Hint If you’re screwing into plaster board, drill guide holes where the screws will go and then use a screwdriver to screw nylon wall anchors. This will increase the wall’s capacity to handle the load of the shelf. If you’re screwing into masonry, you’ll need a hammer drill and masonry bit to drill the hole and a set of walls plugs for the screws to go into.

STEP 3

STEP 6: ATTACH THE HORIZONTAL PIECES – PART THREE Place the two top rails in place so that the magazines are properly held. Handy Hint Make sure that you don’t drive the screws in too hard – it could split the timber. First, drill guide holes. Then drive the screws in. Make sure they go in far enough that they countersink below the surface leaving a shallow divot in the timber.

STEP 5

STEP 7: FILL THE HOLES OVER THE SCREWS Take a small daub of timber filler to cover over the screws. Use a putty knife or paint scraper to smooth the filler out, keeping it level with the timber surface.

STEP 8: SAND THE FILLER FLAT Once the timber filler has dried, sand it so that you have a totally flat surface. STEP 9: PAINT THE MAGAZINE RACK Paint the rack using an acrylic paint. Handy Hint If you use the same colour you used to paint the wall, the rack will be less visually obvious in the room.
