This comprehensive survey of Robert Mapplethorpe’s career features over 200 works, including floral still lifes, portraits, figure studies and erotic imagery that charts his involvement in New York’s gay scene, as well as a selection of archival material providing insights into his working methods and life. An icon who photographed other icons, Mapplethorpe captured and shaped an era with portraits that immortalised the cultural

Bright eyed and eccentric 14-year-old Daisy Moon is president and founder of the Little Monsters Club for Misfits (a play on Lady Gaga’s fan club for those not in the know), where she holds her club meetings inside the dusty beachside bus stop on her front lawn. She’s the club’s only member. Her 17-year-old brother Noah couldn’t be more different. An elite athlete on the cusp of cracking national competitions, his world falls apart when he’s caught cheating on a time trial. They both dream big and they’re both stuck in a world too small. Set in a coastal town, this play draws on Australian iconography of the faded beachside surf club, but turns it on its head by drenching it with pop-culture and contemporary teen attitude. Q Theatre is thrilled to bring you this brandnew play by up and coming writing talent Emily Sheehan. Emily completed her Masters in Playwriting at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2015 and the same year, her first play, Hell’s Canyon, won the 2015 Rodney

Seaborn Award, was shortlisted for the 2016 Patrick White Award and was showcased in Playwriting Australia’s 2016 National Play Festival at the Malthouse Theatre. Chicken and Basil Fried Rice Make the most of left-over cooked rice and a barbecued chook with this tasty fried rice idea. INGREDIENTS

• Olive oil cooking spray • 1 large red onion, cut into thin wedges • 3 1/2 cups skinless shredded barbecued chicken (see note)

• 2 medium (300g) carrots, peeled, cut into matchsticks

• 3 cups doongara long-grain rice, cooked, cooled

• 100g snow peas, trimmed, thinly sliced lengthways

• 1 1/2 cups beansprouts, trimmed • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 1/3 cup shredded fresh basil leaves

METHOD Step 1 Heat a wok over medium-high heat. Lightly spray onion with oil. Stir-fry for 1 minute. Add chicken and carrot. Stir-fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. Step 2 Add rice, snow peas and beansprouts. Stirfry for 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. Add soy sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Remove from heat. Add basil and stir to combine. Serve. Fried Brown Rice This healthy fried rice is a smart way to make sure your kids eat their vegies. INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger • 4 green shallots, ends trimmed, thinly sliced • 1 red capsicum, deseeded, finely chopped • 1/4 red cabbage, hard core removed, finely shredded • 200g (2 cups) shredded cooked chicken breast • 545g (3 cups) cooked SunRice Long Grain Brown Rice, cooled • 1 tablespoon salt-reduced soy sauce • 1 tablespoon kecap manis • Green shallot, extra, to serve • Chilli sauce, optional, to serve Photography by William Meppem

METHOD Step 1 Heat oil in a wok over high heat until just smoking. Add ginger and shallot and stir-fry for 1 minute or until aromatic. DIY wooden bathroom shelves

STEP 1

You can never have enough storage space in your bathroom. That’s why these wooden towel shelves are the perfect addition to any bathroom. They’re easy to make and we’ll show you how. STEP 1. HAVE THE WOOD PRE-CUT To make the job even easier, work out the length you want your shelves to be and have timber cut to the right size at selected Bunnings stores. Our shelves are 700mm long. STEP 2. CUT THE TIMBER TO THE CORRECT DEPTH Use the square to measure and mark the depth of the timber, which in our case is 200mm from a 290mmm depth. Use your spirit level to draw the line you’ll be cutting along. Clamp the timber in place and use the jigsaw to cut it to the right width.

STEP 3. CUT THE REINFORCING BARS Clamp the reinforcing bars to your workbench. Put on your safety glasses and earmuffs. Use the grinder to cut the 12mm reo bars into the correct length, which in our case is 150mm. You will need six bars, two for each shelf. STEP 4. VARNISH THE SHELVES Use a paint brush to apply a marine grade varnish to the shelves and leave them to dry. This will help protect them from the moisture in the bathroom. STEP 5. FIND THE CENTRE OF THE STUDS Use the stud finder to locate the centre of your studs where you’re going to mount your shelves. You will need to mark two studs per shelf. Because we are making three shelves, we have made six marks. When measuring and marking, it’s a good idea to use a spirit level between studs to ensure your shelves will be even.

STEP 6. DRILL THE HOLES FOR THE REINFORCING BARS Use a 12mm spade bit to drill the six holes in the wall and into your stud, which in our case is a depth of 70mm deep. Use a rubber mallet to insert the reinforcing bar into the holes. Make sure you leave enough of the bars sticking out so you can attach the shelves to them. STEP 7. DRILL THE HOLES IN THE SHELVES Place your shelves on the bars to work out where the holes should be. Make your marks on top of the shelves, and transfer those measurements to the back of each. Clamp the shelves to your workbench and drill in the holes deeper than the wall to fit the bars, which in our case is 80mm. Make sure you drill straight, so that the shelves will sit level. STEP 8. MOUNT THE SHELVES After drilling the holes in the back of the shelves, insert the reinforcing bars into them. If you need to, gently tap the shelves with a rubber mallet so they are flush with the wall.

STEP 9. PLACE YOUR ITEMS ON THE SHELVES Now that you’re finished, all you have to do is place your items on the shelves. They’re great for towels, toiletries and even plants.
