how to grow tomatoes Are you yearning to grow your own tasty juicy tomatoes? It is easy to grow with some guidelines, and amazing to harvest and eat. Luckily you can grow your own tomato plants anywhere. With sufficient sunlight, water and patience tomato plants go a long way and you’ll get your expectations. That is all you have to do to get your tomato plant growing. Planting The ideal position for tomato plants is in full sun, protected from strong winds. Prepare the soil before planting by digging in some organic matter then water in thoroughly using a liquid fertiliser. Ease the seedlings out of the container and plant them at the same soil level as they were in the punnet. Water in the seedlings immediately after planting. Plants requiring staking should be planted at least 1 metre apart. Bush type tomatoes should be planted 50cm apart. Staking Most tomato plants benefit from staking to encourage fruiting. It is best to stake early while the plant is young and to ensure a nice straight stem. The best plant ties are made from a soft material as they won’t cut into the stems as the plants grow. Any type of support structure may be used. Feeding Tomatoes require regular feeding. Apply granule fertiliser, supplemented with

a soluble or liquid fertiliser regularly at recommended rates.

varieties need large deep tubs (5060cm) with good staking or support. Compact varieties such as San Marzano

Watering Regular watering is more effective than frequent light sprinkles. To prevent disease occurring avoid watering the foliage. Early morning around the base of the plant is the most beneficial method.

pots and great for small areas. Don’t forget to water and fertilise your potted tomatoes as pots dry out more quickly. Also look for compact varieties such as Tumbler Red, Tumbler Yellow, Patio Roma and Pot Tomato in the Floriana For best results always use a quality Australian Standards potting mix.

how to re-pot plants Your soil is degrading, roots tightly packed within the pot or protruding from drainage holes and you have water sitting on the soil surface too long after watering. It is time for re-potting. Safety Always keep tools and materials away from children. Be cautious when using the knife or pruning shears/secateurs.

should be white or light-coloured. Black, dark-coloured, or foul-smelling roots are usually signs of a serious problem, such as fungal disease.

Remove the Plant Take the plant out of the pot. Before removing from the pot, water the plant thoroughly for a few hours before the process. If the pot is extremely dry, soak in a bucket of water for a few hours to ensure the root ball is wet through.

ChooSe youR toolS Hand secateurs are good for small to medium thick branches. Long-handled loppers or a pruning saw may be needed for thick older branches. Make sure you wear rose gloves with long sleeves to protect your hands and arms.

Small PotS Small pots that are easy to manage, simply tap the rim of the pot few times upside down covering the soil with your hand. Larger plants can be laid on their side and tapped with a rubber mallet around the pot until the root ball loosens from the container, then slide the plant out for inspection. A plant ready for repotting should slide out with the soil in one piece. If much of the soil falls free of the roots, the plant may not need repotting. If it does, there may be a solid soil-and-root mass in the shape of the just removed pot. Roots

tRim the RootS Tightly packed roots don’t absorb nutrients efficiently, therefore to promote good nutrient absorption, trim the roots and loosen up the root ball before replanting. Cut through any roots growing in a circular pattern to help prevent the plant from strangling itself with its own roots as it grows. If the roots are thick along the sides of the root ball, shave or peel away the outer layer or gently untangle the root ball with your fingers. Do this along the top edge of the root ball too. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears for this job,

removing as much as the bottom third of the root ball if necessary. Re-Potting Choose a larger pot that the plant will easily fit in and have room to grow. Add a few inches of potting mix and place the plant into the pot so that the top of the root ball sits about an inch below the pot rim. If the plant sits above the rim, remove and repeat with less potting mix in the pot. Add potting mix around the plant, compacting so that it sits upright and the pot is tightly packed. maintenanCe Finally, trim the plant’s foliage relative to how much the roots were pruned. A rule to follow is if you removed a third of the roots, prune off a third of the top growth as well. Water the plant thoroughly and keep it moist, shaded and cool until it is re-established. hintS and tiPS Potting mix is used in preference to garden soil as it ensures adequate drainage and aeration.

For these artists, pleasure is found in discovering the fantastic in what appears to be mundane, where simplicity is a mirage. The exhibition includes video, sound, photographic and sculptural installations that reflect the intricacies of the artists’ work. ompetition flights (tasks) require pilots to exercise skill in maneuvering their balloons over a set course with goals, targets, scoring areas, time and distance limits. Good results in competition tasks are achieved using a combination of winds at various altitudes to fly in the direction of a goal and accurately approach the target within the designated competition area. Balloons do not land on the target itself. Crew members aboard the balloons drop markers onto or as close to the target as they can fly. The markers are small sandbags with streamers attached.

balloon challenge DAILY BALLOON COMPETITION With 2 world class competitive balloon events on through the week competition will be intense, exciting and unmissable. The Australian National Ballooning Championships and the inaugural Canowindra International Balloon Challenge will attract the best of the Australian pilots and an increasing number of overseas pilots. The director for 2014 is Gary Lockyer, Canada’s leading balloon event director, will oversee the running of the event and is sure to take advantage of the high quality and unique flying conditions offered in and around Canowindra. Weather permitting there will be flights each morning at about 6.30 to 7am from Tuesday to Saturday and each afternoon at about 3pm from Tuesday to Friday. Take-off locations will vary day to day, flight to flight depending on wind direction and the flight tasks, these are announced on the Facebook page “Canowindra Balloon Challenge” as soon as the director announces it. Take-off and other information is available on 1300 908 825 so put this in your quick dial and don’t miss a thing! You can also wait near where Emma Street meets Rodd Street and follow the balloons as they leave the briefing and

head to the take-off point but please do not get in the way. Competition events are free to watch, for the maximum experience and enjoyment come and watch the take-off and then follow the balloons as they navigate to the various targets. Marvel at the skill of the top pilots zoom in on the targets in many cases dropping markers within inches of the targets. A competition flight can include up to 5 tasks, some may be pilot declared so you will see them flying to their own destination, others are director declared that they must all attempt. Points are awarded according to how close the pilot drops the marker to the target. Director declared targets will have official measuring teams to check the marker positions.

KEY GRAB - 27TH APRIL A Fiesta event open to all pilots where they test all their ballooning skills in an attempt to grab a “KEY” from the top of 30ft pole. The successful pilot wins a substantial cash prize. A key grab is a great fun event for the pilots and a fascinating event for spectators and is the last task for the event, usually the last Sunday Morning. 2014 key grab will be on Sunday 27th at 6.30am to 7.00am depending on weather conditions.

www.homesguide.com.au

The “key”is set on top of a pole on the Canowindra Airport site on the northern outskirts of the village off Longs Corner Road. Pilots review the weather conditions and decide the location they think is most likely to give them the best flight course to “grab the key”. The only proviso is that the take off is at least 5kms away from the key. Once in the air the pilots have to navigate the 5kms using only the wind to control the direction, until they get close enough to grab the key.. Difficult, you bet, in the last 2 Canowindra Key Grabs several pilots have reached within a metre of the target but failed to take the prize. If the key is not claimed the cash prize is shared across the 5 pilots dropping their markers nearest to the pole. All balloons compete in this challenge, making this a fantastic spectator event and well worth the early start. Entry is by Gold Coin Donation at the gate, and there is plenty of parking available. Take off is between 6.30 to 7am with the 1st balloons arriving on site between 7.00 and 7.30am. (Depending on the air movement or winds) For more information, visit the website at www.canowindrachallenge.org.au

council watch News and updates by the hills shire council Stage IS Set For Bella VISta Farm Park The construction of a stage at Bella Vista Farm Park is set to commence in June following approval by the NSW Heritage Council. The Heritage Council had previously approved the stage, but construction was held up pending further site investigations which have since been conducted. Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said the construction of the stage would further enhance Bella Vista Farm Park’s growing reputation as a performing arts venue. “Over the last decade we’ve really opened up the wonderful Bella Vista Farm to the public and events in the Park are becoming increasingly popular,” Mayor Byrne said. “Shakespeare in the Park and the Sydney Country Music Festival are the kind of events that have not only drawn people to the Park but attracted visitors from outside the Sydney Hills.” “This stage will give artists and performing arts groups more options in the Sydney Hills.” Mayor Byrne also thanked Baulkham Hills State MP David Elliot, who had successfully secured $123,500 worth of NSW Government funding for the $500,000 project. “David has shown great support for Bella Vista Farm Park and he can see the enormous potential of further enhancing the park as a performing arts venue.” “I want to thank David and NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell for their support of the Sydney Hills.”

The family of coward punch victim Michael McEwen will be on hand to warn Sydney Hills youngsters of how a night out can turn ugly, even through no fault of your own. The first ever Street Wise Seminar will be held at Castle Grand Community Centre on Wednesday April 16, with NSW Police, Emergency Services and Julieanne Bridges also speaking on the night. Michael McEwen, 23, was knocked unconscious and fell backwards to the ground following an unprovoked coward punch attack, hitting his head on the pavement. He was in an induced a coma for a week and required two operations. Michael’s sister Cynthia said the event changed their lives, but they’ve turned it into something positive after starting the Wake Up foundation. “Michael’s assault was devastating for our family and all who knew Michael. Fortunately, his recovery has been miraculous and we are now in a position where we can use our story to make a change,” Cynthia said. “By telling our story, my father and I wish to educate young people about the effects of late night violence. If people understand that anyone can be affected, perhaps their attitudes towards alcohol and violence will change.” “We are using the Wake Up Foundation to encourage young people to re-evaluate their idea of a good night out. There seems to be a glorification of drinking and getting drunk that needs to change.” “I also want to stress to young men that their fists are weapons and can be deadly. If you punch someone in the head, there is chance that you will kill them or do serious damage.” Senior Constable Jason Roughley from Castle Hill Police will look at motor vehicle statistics and local black spots and their relation with local pubs. Julieanne Bridges will talk about issues surrounding young drivers. For details and tickets visit www. streetwise2014.eventbrite.com.au

Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has congratulated the University of Notre Dame on reaching their first milestone – having operated in Norwest Business Park for 12 months. Mayor Byrne said that the idea of bringing a university to Norwest Business Park was one she supported after it was first suggested by Adjunct Professor Jim Taggart, Baulkham Hills State MP David Elliott and local businessman Brian McHenry. “Professor Taggart, Mr Elliott and Mr McHenry all saw the enormous potential for a university that offered post-graduate business courses in the heart of Norwest Business Park. “I want to thank them for their passion and dedication to creating higher education opportunities here in the Sydney Hills. We’re well known for the fantastic primary and secondary educational options on offer and I think we’ll see an increase in tertiary education options in the coming years.” “For a long time there has been a lack of post schooling educational opportunities with residents having to travel to other areas to access tertiary education. However, things are changing along with Baulkham Hills TAFE, we now also have the Bedford College and the University of Notre Dame up and running offering post high school opportunities for residents.” “With the population of The Hills expected to increase by a 100,000 over the next 20 years, there will be a demand for increased educational facilities including tertiary educational opportunities.” Mayor Byrne, who is also the Chair of the University’s Advisory Committee, has spent the majority of her life enrolled in formal education and said she knows the value of having institutions like Notre Dame in the Sydney Hills. “Education opens doors and it’s important that education is accessible and affordable to all those who wish to pursue it” said Councillor Byrne. “I congratulate Notre Dame on their success in The Hills and I look forward to celebrating more milestones with them in the future.”

skincare mistakes Common mistakes that damage your skin

You already know it’s a sin to go to bed without washing your face (right?!), but that’s just one of many common bad habits that can seriously damage your skin.

T

o determine the most unforgivable beauty mistakes, we talked to board certified dermatologist Debra Luftman, M.D., co-author of The Beauty Prescription and dermatologist for Simple skincare. Brace yourself for some tough love—trust us, your skin will thank you later! Mistake #1: You piLe on The proDucTs We’ve all done it—you hear rave reviews about a new treatment and immediately think, yes, i need that! Before you know it, your beauty arsenal consists of toners, moisturizers, scrubs, retinols, cleansers, creams, and more. Not only is applying all of these products excessive and time-consuming, but you run the risk of irritating your skin. According www.homesguide.com.au

to Luftman, your daily skincare routine should really cap off at three to four products. “You only need a cleanser, daily sunscreen, and a treatmentoriented product—like a moisturizer, acne treatment, or anti-aging product,” Luftman says. If you’re constantly tempted by a new mask or cream that you bought, keep it out of sight so you only use it occasionally. And nix harsh scrubs and toners from your daily routine—they should only be used two to three times per week, Luftman says. Mistake #2: You skiMp on sLeep anD waTer There’s a reason your face resembles a celebrity mug shot after a night of partying. “Sleep and hydration are essential for

skin health,” Luftman says. Not getting enough water can literally leave your skin thirsty, making it look dry and dull, so make sure you’re drinking enough water every day (and it’s not necessarily just eight glasses!). And hitting the sheets a little earlier can help give you a healthier glow. “Sleep is so important for skin turnover and for blood volume coming to the skin,” Luftman says. “It just makes all the difference in the world.” Stay fresh-faced by aiming for the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Mistake #3: You uSE productS tHAt trY too HArd When a single product promises you clearer skin, fewer wrinkles, and smaller pores, who wouldn’t want to snatch that up? the problem: It’s highly unlikely that a product will contain enough of each ingredient to live up to all of those claims—and if does, it’s probably too harsh for your skin. “Women are now tending to use products that multitask. unfortunately, that means choosing products with more and often irritating ingredients,” Luftman says. Her suggestion: check out the ingredient label—anything after the

first three ingredients isn’t doing much. Instead, stick to products with fewer ingredients that are targeting a specific issue, says Luftman. Mistake #4: You put oN productS HApHAzArdLY Yes, it actually matters which products you put on first, which ones you combine, and when you apply them! When it comes to layering products, you want to put on the treatment-oriented product first, says Luftman. For example, if you’re using a retinol or acne treatment, you should apply that before a basic moisturizer. And talk to a dermatologist before using more than one product with irritating ingredients, like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid— two common OTC acne-fighters. Finally, use harsher products like retinols at night, since they can make your skin more sun sensitive, says Luftman. Mistake #5: You LEAvE Your mAkEup oN At tHE gYm We know it can be a little unnerving to work out totally bare-faced, but your skin will be better for it. Even mineral makeup formulas that swear they won’t clog your pores can still cause you to break out

www.homesguide.com.au

after a sweat session, says Luftman. keep makeup removing wipes in your gym bag so that you have no excuses. Feeling too exposed? You can get away with wearing a very basic tinted moisturizer—just make sure it’s oil free, says Luftman. Mistake #6: You’rE SkIppINg A dAILY SuNScrEEN We know you’ve heard it a million times, but it’s worth repeating: “the most important step not to miss on a daily basis is the use of an SpF,” says Luftman. Not only can it protect you against sunburns and skin cancer, but new research found that people who use a daily sunscreen with SpF 15 or higher have significantly younger-looking skin. Luftman’s suggestion: Simple’s protecting Light moisturizer with SpF 15, an oil-free formula that shields against uvA and uvB rays. In this case, it’s fine to let a moisturizer pull double-duty as a sunscreen (See mistake #3). If you plan to be in the sun for an extended period of time, be sure to layer on something a little stronger— like SpF 30 or higher. Article by Casey Gueren

stay injury free when training How to get fit and stay fit without overdoing it WEAR QUALITY SHOES AND REPLACE THEM REGULARLY When shoes break down it affects your stride, which can place stress on the tendons and ligaments of your legs and lead to injury. START SLOWLY AND BUILD UP GRADUALLY For example, when it comes to running, the general guideline is to increase your total distance by no more than 10 to 15 per cent each week. INTRODUCE ONE NEW ELEMENT AT A TIME If you’re increasing your weights at the gym, don’t increase your reps. If you’re adding an extra spinning class, wait a week or two before you sign up for kickboxing too. REST The day after a challenging workout, take it easy with a swim or gentle yoga session, or even take the day off. Margot Manning, accredited level two track and field coach and podiatrist of In Training in Brisbane, says this way your muscles will get stronger, adapt better and be able to handle a heavier training load. WARM-UP Ease into every workout with a five- to 10-minute warm-up so your muscles are warm and loose. And cool down for the same amount of time post-workout to prevent muscles from tightening up.

Why all runners should When you’re doing 10 to 20 minutes of strength work each day, your injury risk will decrease dramatically, allowing you to run more, train faster, and ultimately race faster

I

n the old days, runners ran. (Seriously: Ask runners a few generations older than you what they did for their daily workout, and they’ll likely answer: “I ran.”). But no matter what race you’re preparing for, you might not want to stick to this old training routine. We’ve learned a lot over the last 30 to 40 years, and running has evolved. Today, runners need to do more than just run. Runners need to be strong and athletic. If they’re not, they can get hurt even if they practice good running form. In fact, some injury statistics put the annual injury rate for runners at a staggering 66 percent. That’s higher than professional football! Reducing the injury rate isn’t actually

“Today, runners need to do more than just run.” that difficult, though. In fact, runners can do so effectively with just 10 to 20 minutes of strength training each day. The benefits of strength training for runners—for both injury prevention and performance—are real. Whether your goal is simply to run easier with less pain or to run faster in your next race (whether a 5K, a half marathon, or the full 26.2 miles), a few strength sessions every week can help. Using runner-specific strength exercises will increase structural fitness—or the ability of your bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles to withstand the impact of running. While most forms of strength training can help improve overall performance, 40

homesguideliving

www.homesguide.com.au

adding heavy resistance exercises, in particular, can make you faster during the final sprint of a race. “Whether your goal is simply to run easier with less pain or to get faster in your next race, a few strength sessions every week can help.” Strength work is especially important for injury-prone runners and those who are putting in a lot of miles (For marathoners, that means at least three strength workouts every week!). While building your aerobic engine (read: endurance) through running, it’s key to counteract all that wear and tear with the right exercises. Since many of us live fairly sedentary lives in front of a computer all day, it’s no wonder running injuries are so common—we’ve lost all our strength! Luckily, there are specific exercises that can counteract this strength loss and are highly effective for runners. Compound movemenTs The best exercises for runners train movements, not muscles—so stick to compound, multi-joint exercises in the gym (and make sure your form is correct!). Some of the classics include deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, chin-ups, bench press, and step-ups onto an elevated platform. These exercises target functional movements that we do in real life, like bending down, pushing and pulling things, and picking things up. “Bodyweight routines can help you recover from running while still building the strength needed to help prevent future overuse injuries.”

strength train Bodyweight exercises Complement compound movements with a good dose of bodyweight exercises you can do in your living room after an easy run. Bodyweight routines can help you recover from running while still building the strength necessary to help prevent future overuse injuries. Effective exercises you can do almost anywhere include lunges, planks, pistol squats, push-ups, side planks, bird-dogs, and side leg lifts. All of these build the core strength you need to prevent injuries and get stronger. hip strengtheners A majority of running injuries are caused by weak hips—a major problem area for runners who sit for most of the day. One solution is the ITB Rehab Routine, a series of exercises that treats and prevents IT band injuries but also works well for general injury prevention. It focuses on hip and glute strength—two of the most important stabilizing muscles that are used while running. Foam rolling is another great option for muscle recovery and injury prevention. Strength sessions can be quick: Simply pick 3-5 exercises and do 2-3 sets each, aiming for 4-8 repetitions. And don’t be

afraid to lift heavy: Remember, heavy weight helps runners! Just keep in mind that heavy-weight routines are more intense and should be done just 1-2 times every week. Scheduling strength exercises isn’t difficult—simplicity is the best policy here! Follow these three easy principles to make sure your strength sessions fit well with your running schedule.

1

save the weights for post-run and moderate effort days Since strength workouts can be higher in intensity than a standard run, strength train after you run (immediately or later in the day) on moderate effort days. Avoid doing them on your long run or workout days since you’ll already be fatigued from your running (Your form may suffer, and you don’t want to increase injury risk.). And keep your easy days easy—no hard lifting when you should be prioritizing recovery!

2

Bodyweight? piece of cake Depending on the exercises you’re doing, bodyweight sessions can require only low-to-moderate effort and can be done on any day of the week.

www.homesguide.com.au

Do them right after you finish your run and they’ll help you warm-down properly by increasing your range of motion and preventing muscle adhesions (i.e., places where muscles get knotty from scar tissue). By doing this, you’ll avoid a lot of the aches and pains that are too common with most runners. “It’s more important to do something than nothing at all, so just get started.” Start with just five minutes of strength exercises (or 4-6 exercises) after your run and build from there. It’s more important to do something than nothing at all, so just get started. Don’t worry if it’s the perfect exercise or routine—you’ll notice yourself feeling better in no time.

3

Build slowly Once you’re comfortable with the basic exercises, start increasing your reps or adding more exercises to your routine. Just make sure you’re adding several types of exercises (mentioned earlier) so you’re keeping variety high—your body will benefit most when it’s working multiple muscle groups.

Director: Michel Gondry | France In this filmed conversation, French cinematic visionary Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) meets ‘the most important thinker alive’ – philosopher, linguist and activist Noam Chomsky. Featuring brightly coloured, handdrawn animation to illustrate Chomsky’s personal life and ideas, and crafted with verve, it’s both a visual and cerebral pleasure.

icon of peace. In his personal letter to Mandela – augmented by interviews with the Dalai Lama, Ariel Dorfman, Tariq Ali, Henry Kissinger and others – director Matabane confronts his childhood hero with the difficult question of whether Mandela went too far in his policy of forgiveness and reconciliation. PARTICLE FEVER Director: Mark Levinson | USA The biggest machine ever built, the Large Hadron Collider was designed to recreate the moments after the Big Bang, thus explaining the origin of matter (the ‘God Particle’). In this immensely enjoyable documentary, former physicist Mark Levinson takes us inside the moment of truth: when the switch is thrown for the first time. Particle physicists have rarely been so compelling – or funny.

NELSON MANDELA: THE MYTH AND ME Director: Khalo Matabane | Germany, South Africa Nelson Mandela remains an international

PULP Director: Florian Habicht | UK It’s the day of Pulp’s last UK concert in their hometown of Sheffield, and all across the city fans are ready for a big night. New Zealander Florian Habicht’s loving portrait of this iconic Britpop band is full of wit and warmth, and when gangly, charismatic genius Jarvis Cocker takes to the stage, and the crowd sings ‘Common People’, you’ll want to join in!

A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION

THE REDFERN STORY (World Premiere) Director: Darlene Johnson | Australia Darlene Johnson’s forceful documentary tells the story of the volatile birth of the first all-Indigenous theatre company, the National Black Theatre. Featuring interviews with indigenous media pioneer Lester Bostock, writer Gerry Bostock, actor Lillian Crombie, activist-academic Gary Foley, academic Marcia Langton, actors Rachael Maza, Bryan Brown and Bindi Williams. The Redfern Story is presented in partnership with Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department, the ABC and Vivid Sydney.

SEPIDEH: REACHING FOR THE STARS Director: Berit Madsen | Denmark This heart-stirring documentary follows an Iranian teenager who yearns to be an astronaut despite social mores and financial woes. Sepideh hauls her telescope to the dark hills surrounding her rural hometown, trailing gossip in her wake – good Iranian girls don’t go out after dark. Filmed over several years, this is compelling, inspiring viewing. UKRAINE IS NOT A BROTHEL Director: Kitty Green | Australia Australian filmmaker Kitty Green’s fascinating documentary follows the members of FEMEN, the infamously 46

THE UNKNOWN KNOWN Director: Errol Morris | USA Oscar winner Errol Morris puts former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in front of his penetrating lens, quizzing him on the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, his relationship with George H.W. Bush, and his years in office. Rumsfeld takes it all in his stride, and Morris’ patient, insistent probing makes for fascinating viewing. WATERMARK Directors: Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky | Canada Filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal and environmental photographer Edward Burtynsky (Manufactured Landscapes) reunite to document humanity’s relationship with water. Stunning aerial footage – filmed over three years – of the rapid shrinking of immense natural waterways is interspersed with first-hand accounts that tell of our use and misuse of this vital resource.

ALTMAN ON ALTMAN When Robert Altman was granted an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement at the 2006 Academy Awards eight months before his passing, Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin introduced him as “a man who didn’t play by the rules or stick to the script.” Presented at SFF 2014 by Altman’s eldest son, Michael Altman, this selection of classics – both the hits and lesserknown titles – celebrates his idiosyncratic career and cinematic genius. THAT COLD DAY IN THE PARK Director: Robert Altman | USA This early offering is the first and certainly one of the darkest and most disturbing psychological thrillers in the Altman collection, evidencing his honed skills and experience from years of television direction and the influence of Alfred Hitchcock. M*A*S*H Director: Robert Altman | USA This iconic, irreverent Korean War-set black comedy lit the spotlight on the 50-year feature-film career of Robert Altman as well as its brilliant ensemble cast, including Elliott Gould, Donald Sutherland and Robert Duvall.

McCABE & MRS MILLER Director: Robert Altman | USA This classic homage to the western features stellar performances from Warren Beatty and Julie Christie in the title roles, stunning Canadian locations and poignant music from Leonard Cohen.

3 WOMEN Director: Robert Altman | USA Sissy Spacek, Shelly Duvall and Janice Rule star in this surreal, twisted psychological study of the bizarre relationship between three apparently ordinary women in an isolated desert community.

NASHVILLE Director: Robert Altman | USA A clever romp through the iconic country-music capital, this mockudrama is an unforgettable tapestry of flawed people and troubled lives. Ned Beatty, Lily Tomlin and Keith Carradine lead the brilliant ensemble.

A WEDDING Director: Robert Altman | USA One of the best examples of the ‘Altmanesque’ style, this 24-character tragic comedy runs several simultaneous plot lines with flawless mastery. Lillian Gish, Carol Burnett, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Mia Farrow are among the stars.

SHORT CUTS Director: Robert Altman | USA This ensemble stew of vignettes overlaps and intersects well over half a dozen relationships. The all-star cast includes Lily Tomlin, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Waits and Julianne Moore. A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION Director: Robert Altman | USA Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, Woody Harrelson, Lindsay Lohan and John C. Reilly are among the stars of Robert Altman’s swan song, set behind the scenes of Garrison Keillor’s beloved radio show.

sydney’s top spots for dogs The best spots to play, stay and explore with your pooch

S

ydney is a great city for dog lovers. Whether you’d like to treat your four-legged friend to a gourmet meal, spoil her with the latest and greatest canine couture or simply let her run amok in an off-leash park, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the harbour city. But where should you go to give your dog the best Sydney experience? Here’s a guide to the three best places in Sydney to take your pooch. There are plenty of cafes and other eateries in Sydney with a positive attitude towards dog owners at outdoor tables, and they’ll go out of their way to make sure your pooch is well catered for while you sit down to a meal. But the best place to take your dog when you’re hankering for some cafe fare is Leichhardt’s Cafe Bones. This inner west institution is open seven days and promotes itself as the world’s first truly dog-friendly cafe. Cafe Bones is a vibrant meeting place for people and dogs, serving up highquality food and beverages for both humans and their pets.

48

homesguideliving

You can enjoy a cappuccino while your furry friend enjoys a Pupaccino; you can enjoy a light lunch while Rover tucks into the Cafe Bones range of gourmet dog biscuits. And you don’t have to worry about any non animal lovers being offended by the sight of your pooch - this is a place for dog lovers, so you’re sure to be surrounded by like-minded people. To top it all off, Cafe Bones is found in Hawthorne Canal Reserve, a hugely popular off-leash dog park. So, once your pooch has finished chowing down, he can go and make a host of new doggy friends and run off his lunch. Perfect!

Play Whether you head north, south, east or west, Sydney is home to some beautiful and well-maintained off-leash dog parks. Perhaps the best park, however, is found right in the heart of the city in Centennial Parklands. Centennial Parklands offers a massive 154 hectares (43 per cent of its total area) of off-leash space. With so much room for dogs to roam free, it’s no great surprise that this park is so popular with the city’s dog owners. If your dog loves running,

www.homesguide.com.au

frolicking, socialising and generally just being a dog, this is the place to take him.

Stay How great would it be to pamper yourself for a night or two in a luxury hotel? What about if you could take your pooch along for a night of indulgence as well? Well, that’s exactly what you can do at the Hughenden Boutique Hotel. Located in leafy Woollahra, the Hughenden is a boutique hotel which also features pet-friendly rooms. The elegant Hughenden has seen everything from poodles and terriers through to golden retrievers through its doors, and the staff ensure everything possible is done to make the stay comfortable for you and your pet. Pets are welcome in a number of areas of the hotel and can even join you for breakfast. During your stay the Hughenden can also help arrange pet-sitting, dogwalking, and even a visit to the doggy day spa. And just across the road is Centennial Parklands, with its special leash-free areas so your pup can run wild. It’s the ideal place to stay for petfriendly getaway. Words by: Tim Falk
