I

hope that our lucky winners from last week who won a double pass to the Top Gear festival enjoyed their prize! The team and I are eager to see photos sent in by them this week! Our creative team went down for the day and had a great time, the weekend was full of high octane action, especially after their last weekend at the Mardi Gras. Sydney is rolling out all the good events! They’re not slowing down either, head to our what’s on pages to stay up to date - beginning on page 20. Coming up this weekend is the Hills Home Show and Lifestyle Expo in Kellyville. This exhibition is a great opportunity to see what local business and services have to offer when it comes to improving, selling, developing, extending or decorating your home. Perfectly timed to get everything you need finished in time for winter! Head to page 11 to view a few exhibitors that will be at the show this weekend and for further home and lifestyle related information. Feeling lucky? We are currently giving away Bunning’s shopping vouchers on our website, homesguide.com.au. Head online and enter the competition! While you’re there, check out our recently listed properties, search for a garage sale or perhaps check your interest rates for a home loan on RatesRus. If you’re into sports gore, we have created an article on the worst sports injuries of all time, on page 42. Though it’s not for the faint hearted. The Sochi Paralympics are currently on, and Australia has a strong chance of taking Gold. Head to our sports section to see the team, page 44. Don’t forget to test your skills on our puzzles this week on page 52, and check your answers for last week on page 6. Wondering where else you can find us? Turn over for our distribution points. If you are a local business owner, services or professional, then homesguide is the perfect print media for you to advertise. Call us and we can assist you in promoting your business.

how to build an outdoor table The garden or patio table can become an indispensable item throughout summer especially if you have a shady retreat where you can enjoy the company of friends. The size of this table can be increased to suit your requirements but will require extra materials. 1. MAKING THE TABLE TOP Cut the top boards to length. Shape the corner diagonally using a plane, then cut the two end support rails to length with their 50 deg end levels. Lay one of these on the workshop floor and pencil a line around its profile to make it easy for setting up the legs later. Lay the boards on the supports to check for fit allowing about 4mm spacings between. Use a 100x4.5mm nail as a spacer. Adjust this spacing more or less to fit the supports. Allow the edge boards to over hang the supports 5 or 10mm. Check the top is approximately square using a square. Fasten the top board to the spacers with the 57x8g screws. Countersink the screws slightly below the surface. 2. MAKING THE LEGS Cut the legs to size and shape. Lay the legs on the floor with their top ends up to the previously outlined support rail in their proposed positions. Using a straight edge, check the bottom of the legs are in alignment, then mark the leg crossing intersection on each leg ready for the

half check housing. Mark out the housing depths. These should be half the thickness of each leg. Remove the housing waste using a saw and chisel. Prime paint the housings. Prime paint all the joints before fastening together. Tack together the legs with two nails to temporarily hold the shape and screw fasten both to the support rails with 2 or 3/57x8g screws each end. Then screw join the legs together at the housing using 2 or more screws. Attach both pairs of legs in this manner.

Fig. 1

Fig. 2

3. ASSEMBLY Cut the top ends of the braces to shape then measure the length required - see fig.2. To obtain this measurement, keep the legs square. Cut these to length and screw fasten to the legs intersections and the top boards. 4. FINISHING OFF YOUR TABLE Fill all screw countersink holes with an exterior filler and allow to dry. The table is now ready for painting or staining.

how to choose your bbq

Aussies love a good BBQ and, with the right choice, you can make it BBQ season all year round. Whether you cook on it every night or just special occasions, here are a few things to look out for when making your choice. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BBQ? Wherever you want to cook outdoors there’s a BBQ to match. From lightweight, portable BBQs for camping, to compact sizes for small courtyards, right up to a massive outdoor kitchen for your new deck. HOW MANY ARE YOU COOKING FOR? Whether it’s for family meals or the whole footy team, you can judge how many a BBQ caters for by the number of burners. 2 burner BBQs will easily cater for 4 people, or you can get serious with up to 6 burners. WHAT’S ON THE MENU? Chops and snags always go down well, but you can find BBQs designed

for baking, roasting and smoking, with extra features like side burners and rotisseries. Or you could go for a pizza oven or spit roaster. BASIC FEATURES There are two basic BBQ designs – the flat top grill, which cooks using direct heat, or the round kettle, which uses direct and indirect heat. Hooded BBQs are a great choice because they give you a mix of both.

• Fuel type - wood, electric, charcoal or gas • Number of burners (2 burners are ideal) • Grills that direct grease away from the burners to reduce flare-ups • Extra features - bench space for preparation, built in thermometer, side burners or a rotisserie

Make sure your BBQ has these basic features: • Easy to use and maintain • Solid construction - stainless steel or porcelain enamel surfaces

15 diy tips for everyone Sometimes the best fixes are the simplest. Here is a list of 15 everyday D.I.Y. tips from Bunning’s instore experts. MEASURE TWICE AND CUT ONCE This may sound like an obvious one, but it’s a surprisingly common mistake. It always pays to double-check your measurements to make sure they are accurate before you cut.

1

RUB THE EDGE OF YOUR SAW WITH SOAP Make your sawing easier and smoother by rubbing soap on the cutting edge of your saw. You can also rub soap on the head of your screws to make them easier to screw in.

2 3

ALWAYS UNWIND EXTENSION CORDS It pays to not take any risks with electricity; coiled cables get hot and can cause fires. Be careful where you run your cords. It’s a good idea to run them along a wall or tape them down to avoid tripping over them.

4

ALWAYS WEAR PROPER SAFETY GLASSES No matter what D.I.Y. you’re doing around the home, if it involves any kind of sawdust or flying particles, be sure to wear safety glasses. When selecting them, make sure they’re tight fitting and fit the contours of your face.

6

7

PROTECT CHROME PLUMBING FITTINGS FROM TOOL MARKS If you need to tighten chrome shower or tap fittings, wrap the chrome in duct or electrical tape first to stop your wrench leaving marks. REPLACING A MISSING GLUE CAP If your glue cap goes missing during a job, simply find a screw that’s about the same size as the nozzle and screw it in.

8

AVOID WASHING PAINTBRUSHES BETWEEN COATS Instead wrap them tightly in cling film or plastic bags, this will keep them moist until the next coat.

STOP YOUR TOOLS FROM RUSTING Store a piece of blackboard chalk in each compartment of your tool box that contains a metal tool. The chalk will absorb the moisture and reduce the chances of rust forming.

5

16

homesguideliving

www.homesguide.com.au

REMOVING PAINTED OVER SCREWS Using a pair of pliers, heat a small piece of wire with a lighter or match, and then use it to melt the paint out of the screw head.

9

SCREWING INTO STRIPPED OUT HOLES If a hole is too big for a screw, fill it with a couple of matches or toothpicks first. Then gently place in your screw and tighten it with a screwdriver.

10

SMOOTH CAULK When sealing joints or seams with caulking, simply run your finger along it for a smooth finish. For latex caulk, wet your fingertip with water then run it along the bead. For silicone caulk, use a pair of tight fitting rubber gloves and wet the tip of your finger with methylated spirits.

11

PROTECTING PAINT WHILE REMOVING NAILS When using a claw hammer to remove a nail, criss-cross a couple of rubber bands across the claw to protect the finish of the surface you’re removing the nail from.

12

CLEANING GROUT Use a steam cleaner to bring grout stains to the surface where they can be easily wiped away.

13

15

GET FREE ADVICE If you’re ever not sure of what to do with a job, the best thing to do is get some advice from someone with experience. You’ll find expert Team Members at your local Bunnings, or you can book in for one of their free D.I.Y. Workshops every weekend.

RE-USING PAINT THINNER Clean oil based paint from brushes by placing it in a jar filled with paint thinner. Once the brush is clean, cover the jar and wait for the paint and thinner to separate. Once it has, scoop out the clarified thinner into another jar then seal. Leave the dirty jar open to dry out, and then dispose of responsibly.

string gardens, bring the greenery indoors Take inspiration from the Japanese garden trend Kokedama (moss balls) to create your indoor string garden.

M

ason jar lanterns, living walls and miniature gardening are all top garden design ideas this year, but if you want to bring more greenery and spring brights into your home then this is one trend you will want to try.

String gardens can transform your plants into brilliant art displays for kitchens and sunrooms, or can be suspended in lounges to literally create a ‘living room’. Take inspiration from the Japanese garden trend Kokedama to create your own!

1

To get started you need to select a few plants. Choose greenery and flowers such as ferns, grass, begonias and orchids, as these will thrive in the indoor environment, provided that they have a little sunshine each day to bask in. First, soak a bowlful of Sphagnum moss in water and leave to sit. Turn your attentions to your plants and remove as much soil as you can, exposing the roots. Take care to be gentle to ensure you don’t damage them. Briefly dip the plants into roomtemperature water and set aside. Pick out your soaked moss - about enough to wrap around your roots and squeeze out the water. Pull the moss around the roots and secure together with cotton string. Have a 7:3 ratio of peat moss and akedama soil at the ready, and mix together, adding water when needed to create a clay-like consistency. Pull on your gloves and proceed to shape this mixture into an orangesized ball or larger grapefruit for bigger plants. Make sure your ball has enough room for the roots of your plant. Once you’ve firmed up your ball, make a slight hole or split and enter your plant inside. Then reshape the ball around the plant. Finally use sheet moss to cover your plants and secure this with string and twine. Find a place to hang your new string garden and you’re ready to go!

Measure the designated area, width and lengthwise to make sure your new purchases are going to fit into the kitchen properly. Step 2. PLANNING & DESIGN Once you’ve decided how much space to dedicate to your outdoor kitchen, the next step is to work out how and when you will use this area. For instance, an outdoor kitchen intended for use, all year round, may require some additional design elements such as patio heaters and café blinds to make the space both practical and enjoyable through the colder months.

Step 3. BUDGET While you may be dreaming of an outdoor kitchen to rival most five star restaurants, your hip pocket may not agree. The key to any successful project is knowing how and where your money is best spent. If you want that expensive designer BBQ, you may need to look at other areas you can pull back on. Ensure you have a budget for each item and try to avoid getting carried away with emotional changes that can break the bank. Step 4. SHOP AROUND There’s no excuse these days for paying full price on anything, outdoor appliances and furniture are no exception. If you really want to squeeze every cent out of your budget, make sure you shop around. Online auction sites like GraysOnline and clearance sales are great ways to source both new and second hand pieces for your outdoor kitchen. Just a tip though – always ensure any outdoor

www.homesguide.com.au

appliances used are specifically designed and intended for outdoor use. Step 5. INSTALLATION After all your planning and shopping around, you’ll have some exciting days ahead watching your vision come to life. The two main tradies you’ll need; a plumber to connect any outdoor sinks or gas lines, and a carpenter to frame and construct any cabinets or pergola structures. And as you are responsible for any tradies working on your property, always insist on sighting their relevant licences and insurances before starting construction. After this, it’s simply a case of sitting back, throwing the shrimps on the barbie with a cocktail or beer in hand. Outdoor kitchen areas are real social hubs and no doubt, one zone in your home where good memories will be made. For more top tips and renovation advice, visit renovatingforprofit.com.au.

COUNCIL TEAMS UP WITH ROD FAHEY ON BERNIE MULLANE TENNIS COURTS With just under 15,000 tennis court bookings made at Council facilities last year, it’s clear that the Sydney Hills has a big appetite for the racquet and ball game. And with six tennis courts now under Council control at Bernie Mullane Reserve, those bookings are set to grow throuhout 2014. Council will manage the Bernie Mullane Reserve courts where tennis coach Rod Fahey will be running his tennis school on the lookout for the next Australian champion. Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said that the additional facilities would help residents achieve a fit and healthy lifestyle. “Joining forces with Rod Fahey will give youngsters the opportunity to develop tennis skills and could help Rod possibly unearth the next Australian champion,” Mayor Byrne said. “But most importantly, having facilities like this is about giving the wider community every opportunity to be fit and healthy.” The six floodlit tennis courts have undergone a complete refurbishment with new surfaces and fencing. fun things to do SYDNEY HARBOUR ISLANDS Only a couple of the Harbour’s islands are not open to the public. Take a picnic, enjoy a hamper, explore then switch off. Alternatively, go on an organised tour such as at Fort Denison and learn some more about Sydney Harbour. The best islands to visit are: SHARK ISLAND Take a picnic and watch the boats go by in relative isolation. Don’t forget to take a picture of ‘your Shark Island’ as you arrive. Shark Island is small and you can walk around it in a few minutes, it’s a great spot if you hate bush walking! SHARK ISLAND FERRY The cruise company Matilda currently run a Shark Island ferry service. Alternatively there is the more expensive option of hiring a water taxi. If you are feeling active you could hire a canoe and paddle your way across to Shark Island from Rose Bay. COCKATOO ISLAND The World Heritage listed Cockatoo Island is the big island approximately four kilometres west of the Harbour Bridge. In its more recent past it was home to one of the largest shipyards in Australia. Of more interest perhaps is its convict heritage. Cockatoo is

increasingly being used as a venue for events and festivals including the arts and popular music.

HELICOPTER FLIGHTS HARBOUR HELICOPTERS AND THE NORTHERN BEACHES It is amazing just how much you can see of Sydney in half an hour. All you need is a helicopter! Travel from Long Reef in the middle Sydney’s wonderful Northern Beaches to Bondi Beach further south. Whilst you are still thinking about the

incredible coastal scenery you’ll be flying over Sydney’s Middle Harbour National Park. SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE Arguable the best comes towards the end of your flight as you head towards the fabulous Sydney Harbour. Do you take photos or just stare at the awesome 1500ft Harbour Bridge as it looms up before you? Perhaps seeing the roof of the Sydney Opera House from above will bring forth that niggling thought that has been residing at the back of your mind ‘I’m not sure I can leave this place’.

fter closing proceedings in Vancouver four years ago, Cameron Rahles-Rahbula will open them in Sochi on Friday night after he was announced as the Australian team flag bearer for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. “It’s an unbelievable honour, I can’t explain the feeling,” Rahles-Rahbula said. “It’s my fourth Games. It was a highlight just to make this team for my fourth Games but to be named Flag Bearer is a very special moment. When asked how he would handle the role of leading the Australian Team into the stadium on Friday, a relaxed Rahles44

Rahbula said he would take it all in his stride. “I won’t be nervous at all I don’t think. It’s more about making sure I enjoy the experience,” Rahles-Rahbula said. “This is my last Games and my last time with the team so I just want to make sure I saviour every moment.” The 30-year-old is the most experienced on the nine-athlete Australian team competing for medals on the slopes of Sochi from March 7-16. He is a four-time Paralympian – the only remaining member from the triumphant 2002 Australian team that won seven medals in Salt Lake City, including six gold. www.homesguide.com.au

But Rahles-Rahbula did not medal himself until the 2010 Vancouver Games, where the leg leg-amputee took two bronze (Super-Combined, Slalom), after top-10 finishes in Torino in 2006. His breakthrough in Vancouver earned him the right to carry his country’s flag at the 2010 Closing Ceremony. And now he has the honour of leading his country out in Friday night’s Opening Ceremony at the Fisht Stadium. It is expected around 780 athletes from 45 countries will compete in Sochi. The Flag Bearer announcement was made a special ceremony on Tuesday at Rosa Khutor in Sochi’s Mountain Cluster.

history Australian Chef de Mission Chris Nunn said Rahles-Rahbula was highly deserving of the honour and would lead his team mates with great distinction. “This is recognition of an outstanding athlete who has represented Australia at the highest level for more than decade, and who embodies what it takes be an Australian Paralympian,” Nunn said. “Cameron always sets a great example, and it will be no different here in Sochi. He is someone that every athlete on our Team looks up to.” Rahles-Rahbula’s success at the previous Paralympics, a thriving physiotherapy career, his wife Emily and his young son Archie were the ingredients leading to him to announcing his retirement 18 months ago. But it didn’t last long. The lure of a fourth and final Paralympic Games was too great and he made a comeback for Sochi last year. “Being named flag bearer is definitely one of the top highlights of my career. And to be able to do it with my family here too will be fantastic.” The Australian Team consists of 11

athletes in Sochi - nine athletes and two sighted guides. Australia has appeared in every Paralympic Games since the first in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden in 1976. The first medals, including the first gold by an Olympic or Paralympic winter athlete, were taken at the 1992 Albertville Winter Games when Michael Milton won the Slalom for his disability class – his first of six gold in a career spanning five Winter Games. Milton is now an assistant coach on the Australian national team. The Australian team has won 28 medals since Albertville, 11 of them gold. e was an assistant coach on the Australian Team at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, and thought he would again fill the same role for Australia at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver. That was until he met Melissa Perrine. A highly talented vision-impaired skier who has enjoyed a rapid rise in the sport, Melissa was in need of an equally skilled sighted guide to assist in achieving her goal of competing at the 2010 Paralympic Games, a role Andrew readily accepted. Although he still acts as a mentor to Australia’s Paralympic Winter Team, his major focus has shifted to strengthening his partnership with Melissa, a combination he hopes can win Australia a winter Paralympic medal in Sochi. He has competed with Melissa regularly since Vancouver, most recently winning multiple gold, silver and bronze medals throughout the 2013/14 IPC World Cup season. As the sighted guide for a visionimpaired athlete, it is Andrew’s job to ski just a few metres in front of Melissa and issue voice instructions and directions while completing the course as fast as possible. It is a sport certainly not for the faint hearted.

Citing his sister Annabel and snowboard coach Pete Higgins as the most influential people in his short snowboarding career, Ben has put the past, when his sisters dressed him up as a fairy, behind him and now looks to his older sisters for inspiration when flying down the ski slopes. Ben was born with cerebral palsy hemiplegia after he received a lack of oxygen to the brain during his birth. Growing up in Sydney, he took up snowboarding in 2009 and competed for Australia for the first time at the 2013 European Cup, finishing sixth. Like any teenage boy, Ben loves the movies Anchorman and Zoolander and listens to Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ before going down the mountain to get himself in the zone. He also loves wakeboarding and hanging out at the beach with his friends. Apart from competing at the Winter Paralympic Games, Ben’s ultimate goal is to be a professional snowboarder and inspire other young people with a disability to pursue sport.

ameron Rahles-Rahbula’s interest in skiing began when he attended a Challenge weekend ski camp at Mt Buller. He loved to ski and found he had quite the talent for it and was encouraged to enter competitions. His first breakthrough performance came at the National Championships at Mt Hotham in 2001 where he came second to Paralympic gold medallist Michael Milton in the slalom. Cameron was later named in the 2006 shadow Paralympic squad, and when he made international qualification at a European Cup in Austria, won a place in the 2006 Paralympic Team for the Torino Games. Some of Cameron’s greatest results came at the 2004 World Cup where he won gold in the downhill and super-G events and silver in the slalom. At the 2007 World Cup, he won silver in the super-G, and in 2009 he became a world champion with victory in the slalom at the IPC World Championships in Korea. Less than a month later, he picked up gold medals in both the super-G and super combined at the IPC World Cup Finals in Canada. He won bronze in the slalom and the super combined and just missed out on bronze in the downhill, narrowly edged out by fellow Australian Marty Mayberry who shared the silver medal with a Swiss competitor. That same year Cameron was named Australian Paralympian of the Year for his fine performances on the snow.

n athlete’s journey to a Paralympic Games can often be filled with many twists and turns. Christian Geiger knows this all too well. Christian is a sighted guide for the vision impaired members of the Australian Paralympic Winter Team and is responsible for leading them down the course by communicating directions, snow conditions and tactics while skiing at high speed. It is a highly specialised, high risk job, for which he is highly qualified. Although born in Australia, Christian grew up in Austria and began skiing when he was two-years-old. He returned to Australia with his family when he was eight-years-old and soon became one of the best junior skiers in the country. He won numerous Australian Championships throughout his teenage years and represented Australia at the 2008 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships. Christian went on to excel in the senior ranks too, by earning selection on the Australian Alpine Ski Team for the 2009 World Championships in France, and by pushing for selection on the 2010 Australian Olympic Team for the Vancouver Games.

n 2010, Jessica Gallagher created history at the Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, becoming the first Australian woman to ever win a Winter Paralympic Games medal. With guide Eric Bickerton, Jessica claimed bronze in the women’s vision impaired slalom, capping an amazing rise in the sport after joining the APC’s alpine skiing program in 2009. And to make her momentous Paralympic medal even more special, she won it on her 24th birthday. Hoping to become the first Australian Paralympian to win a medal at both the Summer and Winter Paralympics, Jessica competed in the long jump and javelin at the London 2012 Paralympics however she sustained a serious knee injury in the weeks leading up to the Games which hampered her results. She finished fifth in the long jump and sixth in the javelin. Now back on the snow, Jessica won her first major alpine skiing medals on home soil with two silvers in giant slalom and slalom at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Thredbo, just weeks after joining her new guide, Christian Geiger. Jessica loves watching her favourite sporting team the Essendon Bombers win, and spending time with her family and friends as well as travelling to new places. In 2010 she was named Female Australian Paralympian of the Year for her bronze medal performance in Vancouver. www.homesguide.com.au

riginally from South Africa, Joany Badenhorst was involved in a severe tractor accident in 2005. While playing with a group of friends on her parents’ farm, a group of labourers were busy with a tractor, clearing firebreaks. Joany’s pants were caught in the power take-off shaft of the tractor, amputating her left leg below the knee. Unbelievably, the man driving the tractor died in the same vehicle one month later due to a bushfire. Prior to the accident, Joany was already a successful athlete and had won provincial colours in high jump and modern dance. Since moving to Australia with her family and setting up home in Griffith, Joany was first identified as a track and field athlete with serious potential and she set her sights on the London 2012 Paralympic Games. However, after just missing out on selection for the 2012 Australian Paralympic Team, she was approached by the Australian Paralympic Committee to transfer to its new Para-snowboard program ahead of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. With Para-snowboarding making its debut on the Paralympic program for the first time in 2014, Joany is set to become the first female from Australia to compete in the sport on the world’s biggest stage.

After he was involved in a car accident at the age of two, which resulted in the amputation of his lower right leg, Toby was just 10-years-old when identified by talent scouts while skiing with his family near the ski lodge. By age 11, he had been invited to join the Australian winter development team, and at 17, was a regular member of the Australian Paralympic squad. In the lead-up to the Vancouver Paralympic Games, Toby performed brilliantly at the Paralympic super-G venue at Whistler in Canada, winning a bronze medal at the 2009 World Cup. After a break from sport, Toby returned to the slopes at the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships and won a bronze medal in the slalom after posting a string of frustrating fourth places. During the 2011/12 World Cup season, he won another bronze in the giant slalom and during the 2012/13 season, won a gold, two silvers and a bronze medal at the 2012 North America Cup and then followed up with bronze in the giant slalom in the World Cup series. Just before the Sochi Games, Toby achieved a career goal and won his first gold medal at an IPC World Cup. Winning the super-combined in what is likely to be his final World Cup, Toby was ecstatic and now heads into Sochi in excellent form.

n 2011, Para-snowboarder Trent Milton lost his lower leg and injured his brain in a traumatic motorcycle accident. For the keen sportsman who was a regular surfer, snowboarder, stand up paddle boarder, motor-cross and mountain biker, the injuries were devastating. Coached by snowboard specialist Peter Higgins, Trent worked hard and used snowboarding as a rehabilitation tool. Just 18 months after his accident, he made his international debut and recorded fifth and sixth place finishes to lift his world ranking inside the top 20. He believes just being alive and fortunate enough to be able to snowboard is his career highlight and lists relearning how to do his old adventure sports post-accident as the hardest and greatest thing he has ever done. Trent says making his first Paralympic Team for Sochi is a major milestone in his recovery, with his snowboard competition set to take place three years to the day since his accident. Trent loves going to the beach and embarrassing able-bodied surfers out in the waves, and admires vision impaired skiers and snowboarders for their courage on the slopes.

s a child, Victoria ‘Tori’ Pendergast was on a family holiday at the snow when Disabled Wintersports Australia spotted her on the slopes. Having opened her and her family’s eyes to the world of Paralympic ski racing, Tori attended a number of camps with the APC development squad and in 2010 made her competitive debut at the New Zealand Winter Games. Born missing the lower part of her spine, Tori is suited to sit-skiing and embraced the idea of hurtling down a mountain at top speed in a custom built sled. Most recently she won a silver and bronze medal in the slalom and super-G at the 2013 North America Cup as well as a bronze medal in the giant slalom at the 2013 IPC World Cup in Thredbo. Tori’s life is firmly focused on skiing and when she’s not training, she loves to free ski. She admires some of the top sit-skiers in the world including Americans Alana Nichols and Laura Stevens. In Sochi, Tori will become the first Australian woman to compete in a sit-ski at the Paralympic Winter Games. Away from skiing, Tori also enjoys kayaking as well as catching up with her friends and enjoying good food. On the slopes though, her ultimate goal is to win a Paralympic medal or win the World Cup Globe title and she continues to train in the northern hemisphere to reach her goal.

Athletes in alpine skiing events must combine speed and agility while racing down the slopes at speeds of approximately 100km/h. Two alpine skiing events (slalom and giant slalom) were introduced at the first Paralympic Winter Games in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, in 1976. Downhill was added in 1984, and super-G was added in 1994. Until 1998, alpine events were only for standing classes – athletes with a vision impairment, limb loss, cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury etc. Mono-skiing, for seated skiers, became a medal event at the Nagano 1998 Paralympic Winter Games. In 2012, Para-snowboard was introduced to the Paralympic program as a discipline of alpine skiing. Snowboard cross competition at the Paralympic Winter Games is currently only open to athletes with a physical impairment in their lower body. Paralympic competition accommodates male and female athletes with a physical impairment such as spinal cord or nerve damage, cerebral palsy, limb loss or deficiency and vision impairments. Athletes compete in three categories based on their functional ability and a times factoring system allows athletes with different impairments to compete against each other. The rules of the International Ski Federation (FIS) are used with only a few modifications. Skiers with a vision impairment are guided through the course by sighted guides using voice signals to indicate the course to follow. Athletes with a physical impairment use equipment that is adapted to their needs including single skis, sit-skis or orthopaedic aids.

But Helena, Shakespeare’s most resourceful heroine, succeeds where all else fail. She knows that luck is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, and there are no lengths to which she will not go to win this game. If the end justifies the means, then all’s well that ends well! “They say miracles are past…” You’ll be surprised by Shakespeare in this rarely performed but astonishingly bold play, brought to life with the clarity and inventiveness we expect from Sport For Jove Theatre Co. See an ‘unknown’ Shakespeare, one where you don’t know what happens next, and where fate is not written in the stars, but in the hands of an ordinary girl with a plan! “A young man married is a man that’s marr’d…”

Courtyard Sessions brings you Sydney’s best emerging live bands, playing in the dappled sunshine of the Seymour Centre Courtyard every Friday night this summer – and it’s all for free! The 3rd annual season of the popular outdoor gig series, Courtyard Sessions, runs every Friday 6pm-9pm until March 28, in the courtyard of the Seymour Centre. It’s time to reclaim Sydney’s reputation as a hotbed for live music, one Summer sunset gig at time! Showcasing Sydney’s most talented up-and-coming musicians, the free sunset gigs are a great way to usher in each weekend this summer, a chance to discover a new band… maybe even the next big thing (Courtyard Sessions alumni include Donny Benet, Panama, Jenny Broke The Window and Sures). The performance space, nestled under the trees in the dappled sunshine, comes with its own pop-up bar, gourmet BBQ, roaming performers and vintage games. Courtyard Sessions is kid and pooch friendly. We ask that parents keep an eye on their children and note that alcohol is served at this venue. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times, and cleaned up after. The Seymour Courtyard is fully licensed. No BYO food or alcohol allowed.

Back to Back Theatre’s internationally acclaimed work Ganesh Versus the Third Reich comes to Carriageworks for its Sydney debut. This uncompromising production follows the story of Hindu god Ganesh traveling through Nazi Germany to reclaim the swastika, an ancient Hindu symbol. The depiction of Ganesh’s journey is interwoven with a second narrative: the actors themselves facing the responsibility of performing a play on this subject. As the group battle under the leadership of an overbearing director, the actors question their own ethics. Ganesh Versus the Third Reich invites the audience to consider who has the ‘right’ to create art from history’s darkest chapters. Back to Back Theatre creates new forms of contemporary theatre imagined from the minds of a unique ensemble of actors, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people. Ganesh Versus the Third Reich has won numerous awards including the 2012 Helpmann for Best Play. ‘A vital, senses -sharpening tonic for theatergoers who feel they’ve seen it all.’ The New York Times LUCKY

LUCKY will see some of Australia’s most exciting artists and designers including Tanja Binggeli, Rachel Buckeridge, Priscilla Bourne, David Capra, Eddy Carroll, Julie Green, Leah Jackson, Lyn & Tony, Kate Mitchell, Kevin Murray, Sarah Read, Marilyn Schneider, David Sequeira, Rena Shein, Andrew Simpson, Tiffany Singh and Paul Yore developing new works for Carriageworks. Keepsakes, charms, and talismans will abound, embracing diverse cultural and social interpretations that exist surrounding luck. Submit your wish to the ‘Luck Bank’ for a free fortune. Be brave and take a lucky dip, make a wish, or try your luck at the CHARM SCHOOL workshop with Kevin Murray to discover how charms bring luck and develop a prototype on which someone can pin hopes. ate Miller-Heidke has announced that her 4th album, ‘O Vertigo!’, is due for release in March next year – her first independently-released album. The singer-songwriter, renowned for her direct interaction with her fans, has used the direct-to-fan platform Pledge Music to launch a campaign to fund the recording of the album. The campaign has broken records and achieved its target in 3 days, making it both the fastest and all-round most successful direct-to-fan campaign by an Australian artist to date. But although the campaign has achieved and even exceeded it’s initial target, there are still lots of exciting perks on offer. With every pledge to Kate MillerHeidke’s ‘O Vertigo!’ campaign, fans instantly receive a download of a free 11-track live album recorded on Kate’s extraordinary ‘Heavenly Sounds’ tour conducted earlier this year in churches and cathedrals around the country. All pledgers will also receive a download of the new album ‘O Vertigo!” on release day, currently expected to be 14 March 2014. In addition to the basic pledges which pre-order the album, and a huge variety of merchandise items and fan bundles, Kate is also offering some unique experiences, including your name in the www.homesguide.com.au

liner notes, happy birthday phone calls, acoustic house gigs, the chance to be on the guest list for every Kate MillerHeidke show for life. One lucky fan can even pledge for her Wurlitzer piano, used to create all the new material for ‘O Vertigo!’. And now that the campaign is successful, Kate has added the opportunity for fans to visit the studio during recording, hear the tracks in progress, record hand-claps for a new song, and be credited as a performer on the album. In addition to funding the recording of the album, 5% of everything raised will go to the WWF (World Wildlife Fund for Nature) to support their work to save the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. Kate will be touring capital cities in March-April 2014, performing brand new songs from ‘O Vertigo!, old favourites, and a few special requests from fans who have helped make the album a reality through the Pledge site. The shows are all-ages (although under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the Brisbane show). Further updates, bonus tracks and video updates from the studio will continue to roll out as the ‘O Vertigo!’ pledge project continues. To check out what Kate is up to and what’s up for grabs, go to http://www.pledgemusic. com/projects/katemillerheidke ‘O Vertigo’ is expected to be released on Friday 14 March, 2014. homesguideliving
