diy p r o j ects cut GRass PRoPeRly If the lawn is overgrown, mow it in two or more cuttings then add clippings to your compost bin or pile. Always use sharp mower blades and don’t cut a lawn when the grass is wet. Cut no more than 1/3 of the grass length at a time.

how to maintain a lawn

wateRiNG youR lawN A deep watering twice a week is best for your lawn as it encourages healthy root development. Repeated light watering brings roots to the surface and makes the lawn less drought-resistant. Water your lawn to a depth of at least 2 inches in the early morning or late afternoon rather than midday. Sandy soils require frequent watering than rich heavy soils. Be sure to use an efficient watering system or a trigger spray gun.

a lush and healthy lawn is a beautiful part of a home landscape, and worth looking after. to maintain your lawn you must tailor a program suitable to your local conditions - your soil and grass type and the amount of rainfall you get.

aeRate youR soil PRePaRatioN Just like plants, grass needs light, water and air to grow and stay healthy. To improve the efficiency of these factors we recommend aerating. For minimum aeration you can clean the lawn well at the end of Autumn and give it a good raking every Spring. To further aerate the soil and root system, systematically poke holes in the ground. You may choose different aerating methods depending on your lawn size and involved expenses. The options are a garden fork, aerated shoes or a core aerator for large areas which can be hired. Feed youR lawN Choosing your fertiliser is a personal choice as there are many brands to

choose from. We can recommend a slow-release or organic fertiliser based on your soil’s needs and total area. Using organic fertiliser also will improve the health of your soil. To measure your grass area, divide your lawn into rectangular sections, multiply the length by the width of each section, and add the results. You can do this simply by stepping out the area. Feed every 6-12 weeks, depending on the type of fertiliser you choose. PatcH baRe sPots Loosen the surface, then mix seed and lawn starter together. Rake into the surface and water regularly until you find sprouts beginning to emerge.

use weed aNd iNsect coNtRol chemicals responsibly. The best time to apply chemicals is when the weeds are starting to grow, before they seed or when insects are active. Apply it with ready to use hose-end sprayer, which mixes liquid chemicals with water from your garden hose, with a garden spreader if you use granules, or mix the concentrate at the recommend dose & apply using a garden sprayer. Hints and tips The best time to fertilise is Spring. You can broadcast your fertiliser by hand, but you may get a more uniform coverage with a spreader. Once applying the fertiliser, water thoroughly, unless the directions state otherwise.

how to protect a garden There is a wide range of highly effective and innovative products available for gardeners to care for and protect their plants against insects, snails and slugs. These pests can be combated in the garden by breaking reproduction cycles, getting good insects to eat bad insects, getting other animals to eat pests, and making your vegetables unpalatable to pests. Safety When using pesticides wear protective clothing, gloves, face shield and a respirator where indicated on the pesticide label. It is important to protect skin areas and the eyes at all times, especially when handling the concentrated chemical. Take extra care when in a confined space such as glasshouse. Wash thoroughly in warm soapy water immediately after spraying and always before eating, drinking or smoking, making sure to scrub all skin areas exposed during spraying, or better still, have a shower. If poisoning occurs, follow first aid instructions printed on the label and seek immediate medical attention. Always keep tools and materials away from children. Read the instructions before beginning your project. SnailS and SlugS Snail and slugs are your garden’s worst enemies due to their excessive breeding and rapid destruction. They can be particularly damaging to flower and vegetable seedlings. leaf eaterS Leaf eaters are caterpillars, grubs, leaf-eating beetles, grasshoppers and borers. You know you’re in trouble when you can see holes and missing portions in branches, stems, shrubs, buds, flower petals and fruit. It is important that the problem is dealt with as soon as possible before the damage is irreparable.

SolutionS Snails and Slugs: Fig. 1 Snails and slugs are most active just before or as soon as the rain arrives and at night. Here are a few methods to control these two: Removing the snails and slugs by hand best done at night with a torch. Using a container with a small amount of beer which attracts slugs and snails to fall into the dish and drown (Fig 1). SolutionS: Snail traps are also available through retail outlets. Sprinkle snail bait around under the bushes, walling and rock outcrops where they hide. using snail pellets is effective, but potentially harmful to wildlife, pets and children. iron based snail killers are the safest alternative. leaf eaters: Some eco-friendly preventative measures can be taken to protect your garden from these pests. Several insect and animal predators are extremely effective at naturally counteracting some pests. These are lace wings, lady bugs, hover flies, caterpillar parasites, parasitic wasps and praying mantis. The pests that they pray on can include mealy bugs, mites, moth eggs, caterpillars, whiteflies, cabbage loopers, thrip, leaflopper, flea beetles and scale insects. To get these

insects into Fig. 2 your garden use companion planting. Start by growing herbs like coriander, fennel, parsley and other flowers such as daisies, dandelions, marigolds, sunflowers, thistle, and yarrow (Fig 2). SolutionS: Their flowers encourage these insects to lay their eggs into grubs, aphids and other pests in the garden. once the eggs hatch, the larvae feast on the host. a healthy garden is less likely to succumb to insect attacks. Keep plants well fed, watered and mulched and apply seaweed extract as a preventative measure. insect traps are also an option to use as a preventative measure. Spraying unwanted pests: Some gardeners make their own organic pesticides that taste so terrible that your pests will move on. Two examples are mixing garlic, chilli and onion or mixing kelp and neem oil. Pyrethrum sprays, which are made from flower extracts, are effective but tend to linger, therefore they can damage new arrivals of good insects. There are many eco-friendly and chemical sprays available to remove all of your garden pests. It is advisable to confirm what your pests are and then ask your Bunnings Team Member. Always follow dosage rates and safety instructions.

ivid Sydney is set to enthral audiences once again with the largest program of light, music and ideas in its six year history, NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner announced today. The 18 day festival, named Australia’s Event of the Year in 2013, is on from 23 May to 9 June. Vivid Sydney is a signature event in the Sydney and NSW Events Calendar, and welcomes back Vivid Sydney partner Intel, with major supporters for 2014, Canon, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, City of Sydney, Sydney Opera House, NSW Trade and Investment and North Sydney Council. “Every year Vivid Sydney brings 10

a bigger, brighter vivid sydney.

“Every year Vivid Sydney brings something new, bigger and brighter to wow the hundreds of thousands”. something new, bigger and brighter to wow the hundreds of thousands of people who come to see the event. Vivid Sydney 2014 promises to be nothing short of amazing, with creative industries events, eclectic music performances and spectacular light displays that will transform Sydney’s harbour foreshore and surrounds,” Mr Stoner said. “In 2013, over 800,000 people came to Vivid Sydney, which is owned and managed by Destination NSW, the www.homesguide.com.au

Government’s Tourism and Major Events agency. The event contributed over $20million in new money to the NSW economy, and shone a spotlight on the State’s creative industries, establishing new connections and opportunities across the many areas of business that Vivid Sydney spans. 2014 is set to be even more successful.” Visit www.vividsydney.com for further detailed information and videos.

music & lights VIVID MUSIC With music events a favourite in the Vivid Sydney line up, Vivid Music is expanding in 2014 with an exciting line up of performances and talent as well as expanding into new venues, with new and bigger programs and more content to be announced in the coming weeks. “The core of Vivid Music, Vivid LIVE at the Sydney Opera House curated by Fergus Linehan, will see another fantastic line-up including Pixies, Giorgio Moroder, and Timeline, a special collaboration between the Australian Chamber Orchestra, led by Richard Tognetti and electro-pop duo The Presets – in which they present the history of music in two hours,’ Mr Stoner said. “Expanding into Redfern, a new event has been created for Vivid Sydney this year - Modulations at Carriageworks (6-8 June). Modulations, curated by the extraordinary Steve Pavlovic, brings together the best talent across music, light installations, design and food. It will be headlined by multi-award winning electronic pop legends Pet Shop Boys their performance a rare opportunity to experience a spectacular multi-media production in an intimate and immersive

environment, and their only Australian performances of their 2013/14 Electric World tour.”

VIVID LIGHT “This year for the first time, the harbour will join in like never before, with Harbour Lights – ferries and vessels decked out in LED lights, their colours computercontrolled by satellite navigation as they pass through the world’s most beautiful harbour. The new CBD precinct Martin Place will dazzle audiences with giant light installations, and new Vivid programming at Carriageworks, the Seymour Centre, Sydney University and The Basement will take the event and its music content, into more locations than ever before,” said Mr Stoner. “Of course, Lighting the Sails of the Sydney Opera House is one of the festival’s most anticipated highlights, which I am pleased to announce will be designed by the award-winning creative agency 59 Productions, renowned for their work on the London Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremony and the Westend show War Horse. The Sails are set for a stunning arrangement of

3D-mapped projections.” “The sandstone facades of Customs House and the MCA will once again be bathed in light through collaborations with local and international artists, and new light installations are set to utterly absorb every visitor, including for the first time, five works commissioned by Destination NSW. And after the huge success of last year, the Sydney Harbour Bridge will once again be lit by visitors with a stunning colour palette, making this a very special coat hanger indeed. Darling Harbour will be transformed by a spectacular water show with fountains, water jets and lasers as Aquatique, the French pioneers of dancing fountains, return again to Vivid - this year with a water show twice the size of last year, spanning two-thirds of the Bay. The foreshore running from East Circular Quay right around to Campbell’s Cove and Walsh Bay will become both a playground and a gallery, with over 50 new light installations, in a program full of both interactive installations and stunning works of art, curated by Vivid Light Festival Director Anthony Bastic,” Mr Stoner said.

Sandra Chipchase, the CEO of Destination NSW, said the event generates extraordinary interest which transforms the city not only for visitors, but for its hundreds of small businesses. “Last year’s festival attendance was unprecedented, and it is testament to the popularity of Vivid Sydney and the significant marketing, promotion and travel packaging activity delivered by Destination NSW for this ‘only in Sydney’ www.homesguide.com.au

event. In 2013 more than 11,000 visitors came from overseas travelling on Vivid travel packages. Aside from giving visitors a spectacular experience, Vivid Sydney is also fantastic news for the retail stores, restaurants and cafes that have fallen in love with the festival for the huge crowds it brings and the happy, joyful atmosphere created.” Vivid Sydney Creative Director, Ignatius Jones, said, “Vivid Sydney continues to grow exponentially. Every year we are overwhelmed by the excitement that Vivid Sydney generates, and this year is really building on what’s come before. New precincts, new installations, new music, new ideas and new business all play a leading role in creating Vivid Sydney, and really give our city and everyone involved in Vivid a huge chance to shine. PIXIES SYDNEY EXCLUSIVE WHEN: 23 May - 26 May WHERE: Opera House In a tradition of Australian premieres, one-off commissions and residencies with contemporary music’s most influential artists, Vivid LIVE now welcomes indierock luminaries the Pixies for a rare series of exclusive, intimate performances – finally bringing ‘the cornerstone of modern rock’ (the Guardian) back for a fiery festival opening in 2014. Renowned as Kurt Cobain’s favourite group and worshipped by generationdefining artists such as Radiohead, PJ Harvey and Pavement, the Boston band’s surrealist bend on noise, psychedelia and surf-rock has proved peerless for a near 30 years. Introducing the iconic voices of primary songwriter Black Francis and beloved bassist Kim Deal in songs such as ‘Here Comes Your Man’, ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’, ‘Debaser’ and ‘Gigantic’, the quartet have shunned scene-easy categories since becoming one of 4AD’s defining bands of the ’90s – enrapturing misfit nations with themes of space, sex, dysfunction and pure pop culture voyeurism. Featuring the signature dynamic shifts of founding members Joey Santiago 16

council watch News and updates by the hills shire council UNCLOG OUR ARTERIES! MAYOR CALLS FOR ACTION ON MAJOR ROADS Sydney’s main arterial road network is designed to move people throughout Sydney and The Hills – but it’s too clogged and needs to be thoroughly looked at by the RMS according to Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne. Traffic gridlock on major arterial roads is spilling onto local streets and roads that aren’t designed to cope with the traffic volume. Mayor Byrne said that local residents and ratepayers are footing the bill. “We’ve been inundated with complaints about traffic throughout the Sydney Hills since school returned in late January,” Mayor Byrne said. “Every year people expect the traffic to increase in that last week of January or that first week of February - but what we’ve seen this year is a big increase in traffic, more so than in previous years.” “Some of it is explained, but I have noticed Windsor and Old Windsor Roads are not coping.” “For the most part, residents don’t know and don’t care about who manages certain roads. They just want to see action.” “As a result, Council is often blamed for traffic on roads managed by the NSW Government and RMS.” “The main arterial roads in our Shire are making it difficult to get to and from work or home on time. This creates a lot of frustration and a lower quality of life.” Mayor Byrne said motorists have now resorted to using ‘rat-runs’ along local roads to get home faster. “It’s basic human nature – people will always take the fastest route home. At the end of the day, people are tired, frustrated, hungry and they want to get home to their family.” “But unfortunately this is placing unexpected pressure on local Council roads.” “I’m asking for Senior RMS Traffic Engineers to come out and have a good look at why the arterial road network isn’t operating in the way it 24

should. Something has happened over the Christmas break. We haven’t had that many new residents move in over the break.” “Whether it is a light phasing issue – I’m not really sure. But something has happened over Christmas and something needs to be done.” “But more needs to be done before the population of Sydney increases by more than 1.1 million – 100 thousand of which we expect in the Sydney Hills.”

PREVENTION IS THE MESSAGE FOR ‘APRIL FALLS’ MONTH Did you know that more than one in three people aged 65 or over fall at least once a year? Many fall more often. Falls are even more common among residents of aged care facilities, up to half of whom fall at least once a year. As part of April Falls Month, The Hills Shire Council is holding a free seminar with Council’s Occupational Therapist, discussing measures that can be taken to prevent falls. Topics will include safe footwear, eye checks, care with medications, healthy eating, identifying hazards in the home, simple exercises to keep yourself strong and ways to deal with falls when they happen. The seminar will be held on Wednesday 23 April at 10am at The Hills Shire Council, 3 Columbia Court, BAULKHAM HILLS NSW 2153. Residents interested in attending can contact Council on 9761 7600. FACTS ABOUT FALLS: Fall-related injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for older people • In 2009, 26 per cent of NSW residents aged 65 years or older fell at least once. • In NSW each year, falls lead to approximately 27,000 hospitalisations and at least 400 deaths in people aged 65 and older. The rate (agestandardised) of hospitalisations for falls is over three times higher among residents of aged care facilities than among the other older people. • Age-standardised rates of fallrelated hospitalisations among older people have been increasing for www.homesguide.com.au

more than 10 years. • Even non-injurious falls can have negative impacts, such as loss of confidence and activity restriction. • Falls are the most commonly reported adverse event among hospital inpatients. Information about Falls Prevention is from the Clinical Excellence Commission’s Falls Prevention Program www.cec.health.nsw.gov.au

FOOTPATH PROGRAM BROUGHT FORWARD The swift completion of the 2013/2014 footpath construction program has been welcomed by Hills Shire Councillors, who have voted to bring next year’s program forward. Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said it was a fantastic result that would help Council achieve its goal of connecting the community. “The Sydney Hills isn’t an area that has traditionally had a lot of footpaths, but residents have called for them so we will deliver them,” Mayor Byrne said. “The 2013/2014 footpath program was completed well ahead of schedule so we’ve decided to move some money around in the budget to make next year’s construction program commence now.” “Seven footpaths have been brought forward and work will commence on them between now and June 30, 2014.” In 2013, Councillors set aside more than $8million in the four year plan to construct 47km worth of footpaths throughout the Sydney Hills. “The easier it is to walk around, the more likely residents will be to leave their cars at home,” Dr Byrne said. “Our footpath plan prioritises footpaths around schools, transport hubs, shopping centres and nearby residential areas.” “We’re going to strive to make moving around the Sydney Hills as easy as possible for our residents.”

or people with dementia a visit to the emergency department can be highly stressful due to the noise and chaos of a hospital’s emergency department. Many sufferers then experience a level of confusion or delirium- this is where Westmead Hospital’s HOPE OPERA unit steps in... Delirium is an acute disorder of attention and global cognition (memory and perception). In the past delirium or people in distress were often sedated or restrained which is the complete opposite of what is needed to treat it. To prevent this delirium and care for dementia patients Westmead Hospital created the HOPE OPERA (Healthcare for Older Persons Earlier / Older Persons Evaluation Review and Assessment) Unit. Located right next door to Emergency, the unit www.homesguide.com.au

aims to provide specialised care by nurses and doctors trained to be sensitive to the emotions of someone with dementia. Westmead Hospital’s HOPE OPERA unit provides the environment that is needed for patients: activities for patients to do during the daytime, a quiet and dark environment at night and equipment or tools such as visual, hearing and orientation devices on hand. “Delirium can make people very disruptive and it’s often managed by sedation or restraint, which can only add to the confusion and agitation,” says HOPE/OPERA Nursing Unit Manager Russell Roxburgh. “This way we can provide a safer physical environment for the patients and the best possible opportunity for us to manage patients and get them moving out of the ED to get the care they need.”

How westmead medical ReseaRcH Foundation Has Helped Westmead Medical Research Foundation is the primary fundraiser for Westmead Hospital. Together with its generous donors, they believe that everyone deserves access to the best possible treatment and care. To support the HOPE OPERA unit, the Foundation purchased specialised beds and safety mats, to ensure patients are safe when they’re being cared for and activity boxes and aprons with items that provide diversional therapies to help patients cope. Generous donations to the Foundation have enabled us to purchase: • Specialised beds and safety mats to ensure patients are safe while they’re being cared for • Activity boxes with items that provide diversional therapies to help patients cope These activity boxes suit a wide range of interests such as fishing, sewing, crafts and hardware. Patients can take the box that they like and look and touch the items, often bringing memories to the forefront of their minds – it really is a special and simple way to care for these patients. The Foundation has also donated Activity Aprons which have special textures, buttons and materials attached to help calm the patient and help with diverting their attention. The HOPE OPERA unit is just one department of a very busy Westmead Hospital, and these items are just some of the ways generous donations towards Westmead Medical Research Foundation have been used to help. Beyond this, generous donations from the community have recently funded research projects across ovarian cancer, leukaemia, liver disease, cardiology and more plus urgently needed equipment and services for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, adolescent health, the cancer care centre, palliative care and much more. How You can Help Chances are that one day you, or someone you love, will benefit personally from the work at Westmead. The

westmead medical Research Foundation helps westmead Hospital provide the best care possible to our communities newest members all the way through to the precious elderly of our community. Foundation gives you a chance to say thanks, or make a difference for another family when they need it most. You can make a difference today and support health care and research at Westmead by donating to a cause that’s close to your heart. Become a regular donor, hold a fundraising event, give through your workplace or volunteer. Did you know that Westmead Medical Research Foundation helps by raising funds for the hospital to: • Care for 1 million patients annually across many diseases • Welcome nearly 6,000 babies every year • Care for babies born prematurely or suffering life threatening complications flown to Westmead from across NSW • Treat up to 321 cancer patients each day • Provide up to 46,000 chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments a year. Support hundreds of researchers looking www.homesguide.com.au

for answers to a wide range of deadly diseases and is focused on translating discoveries made in the lab to treat patients as quickly as possible Other outcomes that the foundation has been able to achieve with the help of generous donations: • Four state of the art transport systems for critically ill babies in intensive care or suffering life threatening complications flown to Westmead from across NSW • A cutting edge portable ultrasound for the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Care Centre within the Hospital • A new and innovative blood pressure machine in the Intensive Care Unit • Support for adolescents with severe behavioural problems and mental health issues and caring for their families. nine ways to loose the flu fast

38

homesguideliving

www.homesguide.com.au

W

e all have to deal with the dreaded cold and flu from time to time, but these nine quick tips will help you get well faster.

1

Have a cHuckle Dr Paul McGhee, author of seven books on the impact of humour on health, says laughter increases concentrations of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the body, which aids in preventing upper respiratory infections.

2

Get lots of sleep If you are suffering from a cold or flu, get at least eight hours of snooze time each night to help you get well fast. For extra benefit, have a long, warm shower before bedtime the steam breaks up congestion and relieves a runny nose. Also elevate your head with an extra pillow as it drains nasal cavities.

3

Have a Herbal cuppa Immune-fortifying yarrow, elderberry and peppermint helps with the early flu stages of aches and pains, sore throat and fever, says Leah Hechtman, president of the National Herbalists Association of Australia. Infuse a cup of hot water with one and a half combined teaspoons. If you can’t get these herbs from a health store, a blend of ginger, honey and lemon is just as powerful. Slice fresh ginger root, add honey, lemon juice and hot water to make up one litre, and drink throughout the day.

4

sip some cHicken soup Researchers at the University of Nebraska have shown the healing properties of chicken soup are the real deal. In his research, Dr Stephen Rennard discovered chicken soup may contain an anti-inflammatory mechanism that eases the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections

5

reacH for tHe spices If you have a sore throat and like spicy foods, eat up. According to the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University, spicy foods promote airway secretions, which calm an inflamed throat.

6

stay snuG “The old adage that if you get chilly you’ll catch a cold isn’t true. It has to be transmitted from another person,” says virologist Dr Alan Hampson from the Influenza Specialist Group. “However, if you are infected with a cold or flu, rest and warmth are important for recovery.”

7

take a deep inHalation Eucalyptus is an antiviral that eases the symptoms of colds and fever. Lavender alleviates congestion and gives the immune system a boost. Together they pack a mighty punch,

www.homesguide.com.au

particularly when combined in an inhalation with peppermint oil, says herbal medicine practitioner Maria Mitchell. Add two cups of boiling water, two drops of eucalyptus oil, one drop of peppermint oil and one drop of lavender oil to a bowl. Drape a towel over your head from the nose down (don’t cover your eyes, as the peppermint will irritate them) and breathe in deeply over the bowl.

8

eat Garlic and onion Don’t underestimate the power of raw garlic and onion, Hechtman says. Both of these foods have antiinflammatory properties, and garlic is also a proven antibacterial and antiviral. You can make raw garlic more palatable by crushing a few cloves into mashed sweet potato. For an onion-based recipe, chop one Spanish onion then cover with raw honey. Leave covered in the fridge for 24 hours and have a teaspoon of the mixture a day.

9

embrace H20 Drinking water, herbal tea and diluted juice thins congestion, keeps your throat moist and helps prevent dehydration. Try to drink two litres a day and stay away from any caffeinated beverages.

exercise and your brain

Y

ou know that exercise helps you stay fit and toned and can help you slim down. But that’s not the only reason to hit the gym—it’s also hugely helpful for your psyche. Here are the top ways that it helps your brain, not just your body..

1

It Helps allevIate depressIon research shows that exercise is so effective at chasing away the blues, it can even help treat major depressive disorder. In fact, last year, researchers at the University of texas southwestern Medical Center came up with clinical guidelines for the necessary exercise “dose” doctors should recommend to patients to reap the antidepressant effects.

2

It Improves YoUr memorY Getting your heart rate up improves blood flow to the brain, which helps boost memory and overall brain function. In one study that looked at brain structure pre- and post-workout, researchers found increases in brain volume in a number

of areas after participants got sweaty. the effect is pretty noticable: patients in the study did 10 to 15 percent better on a variety of memory and attention tasks after they’d exercised.

3

It Helps YoU de-stress When you’re stressed, it’s often because your to-do list is a mile long—so you probably feel like it would just be more nerve-wracking to try to squeeze in a workout on top of everything else. But here’s why you should: A study that came out last year from the University of Colorado at Boulder found that even forced exercise can help protect you from anxiety and stress. So stop making excuses, and get to the gym when you’re feeling frantic.

4

It MAkeS you More foCuSed After evaluating more than 100 studies on exercise, university of Iowa researchers concluded that strength training helps your focus because it requires focus: after all, it takes some serious effort to eek out those reps without sacrificing the correct form, all while

remembering to breathe and tuning out the distracting guy huffing and puffing beside you.

5

It helpS you StICk to your goAlS In the same university of Iowa study, researchers concluded that, since cardio requires such long and consistent effort, doing a lot of it may help you develop an ability to follow through with tasks. that, in turn, can help you stick to other (nonexercise-related) goals that require longterm effort. sydney’s top spots for dogs The best spots to play, stay and explore with your pooch

S

ydney is a great city for dog lovers. Whether you’d like to treat your four-legged friend to a gourmet meal, spoil her with the latest and greatest canine couture or simply let her run amok in an off-leash park, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the harbour city. But where should you go to give your dog the best Sydney experience? Here’s a guide to the three best places in Sydney to take your pooch. There are plenty of cafes and other eateries in Sydney with a positive attitude towards dog owners at outdoor tables, and they’ll go out of their way to make sure your pooch is well catered for while you sit down to a meal. But the best place to take your dog when you’re hankering for some cafe fare is Leichhardt’s Cafe Bones. This inner west institution is open seven days and promotes itself as the world’s first truly dog-friendly cafe. Cafe Bones is a vibrant meeting place for people and dogs, serving up highquality food and beverages for both humans and their pets.

46

homesguideliving

You can enjoy a cappuccino while your furry friend enjoys a Pupaccino; you can enjoy a light lunch while Rover tucks into the Cafe Bones range of gourmet dog biscuits. And you don’t have to worry about any non animal lovers being offended by the sight of your pooch - this is a place for dog lovers, so you’re sure to be surrounded by like-minded people. To top it all off, Cafe Bones is found in Hawthorne Canal Reserve, a hugely popular off-leash dog park. So, once your pooch has finished chowing down, he can go and make a host of new doggy friends and run off his lunch. Perfect!

Play Whether you head north, south, east or west, Sydney is home to some beautiful and well-maintained off-leash dog parks. Perhaps the best park, however, is found right in the heart of the city in Centennial Parklands. Centennial Parklands offers a massive 154 hectares (43 per cent of its total area) of off-leash space. With so much room for dogs to roam free, it’s no great surprise that this park is so popular with the city’s dog owners. If your dog loves running,

frolicking, socialising and generally just being a dog, this is the place to take him.

Stay How great would it be to pamper yourself for a night or two in a luxury hotel? What about if you could take your pooch along for a night of indulgence as well? Well, that’s exactly what you can do at the Hughenden Boutique Hotel. Located in leafy Woollahra, the Hughenden is a boutique hotel which also features pet-friendly rooms. The elegant Hughenden has seen everything from poodles and terriers through to golden retrievers through its doors, and the staff ensure everything possible is done to make the stay comfortable for you and your pet.
