In October 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old university of Wyoming student, was found tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. how to design a formal garden Planning and planting a formal garden can transform your outdoors. With their simple geometric designs and defined edges, you arrange your plants, hedges, and walkways symmetrically in in circular, rectangular, or square designs. This guide shows you the kinds of plants to use, how to look after them and the importance of having a focal point. STEP 1. PLAN YOUR FORMAL GARDEN Start with a sheet of paper and sketch out the area you want to turn into a formal garden. Consider which plants and trees you’ll use and where you’ll put them. Also think about pathways, the use of pavers and walls. Remember, a formal garden is all about symmetry, repetition and structure. STEP 2. CHOOSE THE PLANTS When choosing the plants to use in your formal garden, make sure the climate is right for them. Choose three to five different plants for your garden and repeat the order their planted in, to create a symmetrical pattern. STEP 3. EASY TO GROW PLANTS FOR A FORMAL GARDEN. If you’re just starting out, there are three plants that are ideal for creating a formal garden - English Box, Standard Lilly Pilly and Lavender. They’re easy to grow and simple to maintain. STEP 4. pumpkin scones Beneath this pumpkin’s thick, mottled skin is a bright orange flesh that becomes deliciously sweet when baked, or boiled and mashed for our fluffy scones. INGREDIENTS • 600g Kent pumpkin, seeded, peeled, coarsely chopped • Butter, at room temperature, to grease • 450g (3 cups) self-raising flour • Pinch of salt • 60g chilled butter, cut into 1cm pieces • 250ml (1 cup) buttermilk

METHOD Step 1 Cook pumpkin in a saucepan of boiling water for 10 minutes or until very tender. Drain. Use a potato masher to mash until a coarse puree forms. Set aside to cool. Step 2 Preheat oven to 240°C. Rub a baking tray with butter to grease. Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Rub
the butter into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add pumpkin and buttermilk. Use a flat-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until evenly incorporated and the mixture just starts to hold together. Step 3 Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Use your hands to press out the dough until about 2cm thick. Use a round 5.5cm pastry cutter to cut 15 discs from the dough. Place, about 1cm apart, on the prepared tray. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden and scones sound hollow when tapped on the base. Source: www.taste.com.au

INGREDIENTS • 250g strong (baker’s) plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 50g unsalted butter, chilled, diced, plus extra to serve • 50g caster sugar • 1 punnet (125g) blueberries • 175ml buttermilk
in the sugar, blueberries and buttermilk, and mix to form a dough. Step 3 Dust your hands with flour and form the dough into a 20cm round. Mark 8 wedges in the dough with a knife.
