Historic Church Hill

One of Richmond’ s oldest communities, Church Hill is a historic neighborhood featuring gas lit cobblestone streets, period architecture. Overlooking the city in the East End, the district draws its name from St. John’ s Episcopal Church, which was built in 1742 and is where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death" speech, by the founder of the city, William Byrd II. This historic area is home to celebrated restaurants and shops, parks and notable landmarks, all within walking distance of Downtown Richmond. Church Hill been featured in articles in The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today as one of the top up-and-coming neighborhoods in the country and a culinary destination.

Parks & Historic Sites CHIMBORAZO PARK Chimborazo Park encompasses a city park and a national park. The national park (Richmond National Battlefield is home to the "hospital on the hill," a former Civil-War hospital open to the public as a museum. The city park provides a 180° view of Richmond and features two dog parks, one each for small and large dogs.. Chimborazo Playground, located one block west, includes a community garden, petanque, tennis and basketball courts.

LIBBY HILL PARK As noted in the New York Times by John L. Dorman, “Created in 1851, Libby Hill Park is one of the first parks established in Richmond.

On

the

by

beautiful Italianate, Federal, Greek Revival and Queen Anne houses situated on many of Richmond’ s original blocks. First called

influential landowner Luther Libby. The view of the James River from Libby Hill Park is said to have inspired the city’ s founder, William Byrd II, to name the city Richmond, since it reminded him of the view from the Thames River in Richmond Hill in London.”

TAYLOR’S HILL PARK Located at 23rd and East Franklin Street, Taylor Park is home to one of the best hillside views of the City!

Festivals & Events PATRICK HENRY PARK Across from St. John’ s Historic Church, at the corner of Broad and 25th Street, is a small park dedicated to Patrick Henry. Each year, the Irish Festival is held in and around the park.

ST. JOHN'S HISTORIC CHURCH Completed in 1741, St. John’ s Church was a central site of activity during the American Revolution. Over 100 Virginia colonial leaders, including Patrick Henry, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson, met there in March, 1775, to avoid the wrath of the Royal Governor Lord Dunmore in Williamsburg. Patrick Henry delivered his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech inside the church on March 23, 1775. Today, the church offers guided tours, and every Sunday during the summer months, actors portray ten delegates, including Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington in historical reenactments of the Second Virginia Convention.
