Always A Cool Summer Night I remember those cool summer nights back in the 70’s. I used to hurry my diner so I can meet my friends on the corner. On any given night the corner would have 20 to 30 kids all dressed differently, some looking as though it was Friday night and had a sudden urge to dress to impress. We spoke about everything, sometimes loud enough that the people 10 houses down could hear. That corner became our part of the world that we were able to enjoy among ourselves without worrying about parents, just the girl your staring at, or the boy you felt was someone you could take home and introduce to mom and dad. It didn’t matter how hard you worked or how hot and humid the day was, that corner was cool. Another thing that was cool was to wash your car before you took it to the corner with you. Never ever take a dirty car to hang out with you. Girls

never liked leaning against a dirty car, and worst was when they would ask, “Whose car is this anyways?” The corner is still there, the memories are still there, but I’m not there. My friends are not there. The cute girl everyone was in love with is not there anymore. As I drive around to and from work and doing the daily chores we all have, I see the same kids gathering around getting ready to enjoy the cool summer night. In Parks, on corners or by your local 7-11, their there. You could here the laughter, the music playing, and the intimate talk. What you will see there are kids getting to know each other in yet another step in life we all take as we look forward to enjoying another Cool Summer Night. Oh, by the way, the cars are still clean and sparkling.

When the school bell rang for the last time this year, some of us did not anticipate the luxury of a great summer. Page 6

An American Hero My name is April Armanno, a Marine Park resident. I am writing you today to tell you about my fiancee, SGT. Nicholas Castellane from upstate New York, who is currently deployed in Iraq. Nicholas has been in the US Army Reserves for four years, stationed presently with the 411th Engineer Brigade. He has been away from home since April, 06 and has been in Iraq since August. His position is head designer on an architectural team, he also serves as a gunner on a convoy security team. He works everyday with the architectural team and only goes out on missions on certain days with the convoy security team. He is due to come back home in August, at which time his plans are to continue his career as an architect. During his career with the Reserves, Nicholas has received the honor of being chosen Soldier of the Month and has received two certificates of achievements from a US General. He has also been nominated for a Bronze Star. Nicholas is the sweetest, bravest person I have ever known. The past 14 months have been very difficult for me; but if I had to do it

all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat. The world’s safety and betterment is priority. I am happy that I will be spending the rest of my life with a hero. Although I face the thought of losing him every day, I know our country needs him and he is doing a lot of good in Iraq. My sacrifice is nothing in comparison to all Nicholas has given for our country. His experiences are unimaginable; but he knows he is doing the right thing and so do I. Of course I am anxiously awaiting his return and welcoming our wedding day. I would like to thank the staff at Brooklynville Magazine for taking the time to understand the feelings of our soldiers and their families. Nicholas is always happy to hear of the support for him and his Brothers and Sisters in Arms. Sincerely, April Armanno

A Very Loud Tradition The residents of Marine Park are getting somewhat annoyed at the consent ringing of bells by their local church. St. Thomas Aquinas installed their new system back in November 2006. They began ringing their bells every hour on the hour from 9 a.m. in the morning till 7 p.m. in the evening. I myself enjoy the ringing of church bells, however I must sympathize with the local residents. I remember watching a classic movie once and I remember one of the town’s youngster ran to the church to alert everyone in the village the bad guys were coming. This kid hung on for dear life as he pulled the rope with all his strength. People in the village stopped and stared in the direction of the church, those closest to the church heard the bells ring, while those in a distance still heard the bells ring but faintly. St. Thomas Aquinas must ask itself if

July 24, 2007

amplifying the bells is of any value to the community. I believe the bells must ring, but ring true to their sound. These church bells must not be amplified thru massive speakers. Tradition is very important in any culture, ringing of church bells is tradition, But that tradition comes from ringing the bells, not placing a mike on bells ringing, that carries the sounds of real bells thru electronic equipment. Neighbors say they’ve contacted the diocese, and Community Board 18 not to mention the 63rd Precinct to no avail. They are currently collecting signatures for a petition and plan to ask the City Council to void the church’s exemption from a new noise Photo By Rachel Berger ordinance. Lets not ask the church to stop tradition, lets ask them will they put away the 4 gigantic speakers and let a local resident ring the bells by pulling on the rope, just like tradition has it.

The transition from high school to college is one of the most important steps your son or daughter will make in becoming an adult. College is a time of new friends, new classes and new responsibilities. Often, the college years are the first time young adults are required to manage their own money and live on a budget-but they don't have to go it alone. You can arm your student with the financial management tools to help him or her plan every detail of campus life-from dorm decorations to biology books and beyond. Educating your student about ways to handle new financial responsibilities will help set him or her on the path to success. The hardest part can be figuring out where to begin. Fortunately, there are resources available to help guide these important conversations from companies. Talk to your partner and child and seek help in planning a

brighter future for your child. Have your child create a budget for the school year and stick to it. Help them track their budget on a monthly basis to make sure they are within their spending limits. As a student learn how to stay within your financial means. For example, buy your textbooks used or check them out at the library, if possible. Use important resources, such as credit cards, responsibly by planning and keeping track of all purchases. In order to avoid late fees and build a solid credit history, always pay bills on time. Request and learn how to read your credit report and rating. For more information, visit www.annualcreditreport.com. Learning to manage finances responsibly is one of life's most important lessons for young adults-and you can help by starting the lesson off on the right foot.

Pothole Just Ate My Car! How many bone-jarring potholes or other road hazards has your vehicle encountered in the past year? Even one severe road impact can affect a vehicle's wheel alignment or damage safety-critical steering and suspension components such as shock absorbers, struts and tie rod ends. If you take a ride by Avenue Z and Hubbard Street you will be able to see a small open pothole ready to turn into a large one in a matter of weeks. I don't expect this pothole to be fixed any time soon. That's why it's important to have a vehicle's steering and suspension inspected for signs of damage and wear on at least an annual basis. Most automotive repair shops can quickly perform a thorough undercar inspection, and many will do it as a free service for new and existing customers. It may be hard to find

such a garage, but trust me they are out there. They can identify any worn parts that might affect vehicle steering, stopping and stability, and check for tire-wear patterns commonly related to wheel misalignment. Shocks and struts play a significant role in driving safety, according to automotive industry experts. These ride control components help promote consistent, firm tire traction by absorbing road-induced impacts and reducing vehicle pitch and roll. The condition of a vehicle's shocks and struts can also affect the performance of interrelated safety components and systems, including brakes, tires and steering linkage parts. Take a moment this summer and have your car check and by all means remember there's a pothole on Avenue Z, and many more scattered around Brooklyn.

Amazing Race I find myself crossing the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Quentin Road often. Standing at the corner preparing myself to cross to safety has become a race for life. The corner is prepared to meet all requirements for a fatal accident. This projected accident can come in many ways, from a car speeding to pass a light that is getting ready to change to red, to the southern side of Nostrand Avenue that tells cars to make a right on Red, but does not give them amble room to do so. I stood on the corner having myself a buttered bagel and a soft drink to see how hectic this corner really is. Below I have listed the many problems I noticed to make this one of the most dangerous corners in Marine Park. 1. There is only one lane for the southern traffic

July 24, 2007

as they approach the light. If the light is Red, traffic is then permitted to turn right sometimes the car in front of them does not need to turn right. 2. Some Cars that are waiting for the red light, will move up further into the intersection to allow the cars behind them who are beeping the horn franticly the access to make that right turn. 3. Cars coming down Nostrand avenue going north, approach the corner and never notice the light that is hidden behind a huge tree. Unless the city tells one of their workers to climb the ladder and trim off the tree so drivers can see when the light changes, this will be an accident that will happen soon, lets just hope no one is crossing at the time. The mailbox is just across the corner, I can see it. The box stands there waiting for mail, just like this corner is just waiting for an accident. I see the light has given me permission to walk across, I better race across, this is my life we’re talking about.

Diabetics and Summer In recent years, the United States has seen an sharp rise in people suffering from diabetes, the condition in which a person's body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use insulin the right way. We certainly need it: insulin helps our cells use blood sugar (also called glucose) for energy. Diabetes can generally be classified as Type 1 or Type 2. In Type 1 diabetes, the body makes little or no insulin. With Type 2, the body makes some insulin but can't use it properly. Most adult diabetics (95%) have Type 2. Blood sugar always needs to be monitored, as over time, high levels damage eyes, nerves and kidneys. “It is always a challenge for diabetics to maintain their blood sugar at an appropriate level, but never more so than in the summer,” says Edmund Giegerich, MD, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at Long Island College Hospital (LICH) of Brooklyn, and an endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) by training. “The more ‘laid-back’ attitude we have towards life during the lazy months of summer can be very harmful to the diabetic.” Dr. Giegerich offers tips to help diabetics enjoy the season without compromising their health: Continue to eat a balanced diet rich in fresh produce, but be aware of the high sugar content of seasonal fruits such as watermelons and

grapes, when eaten to excess Quench summertime thirst with water, not juices or other beverages high in sugar Beware the backyard bar-be-que: hot dog and hamburger buns, as well as starchy vegetables such as corn, can mean too many carbohydrates. Not sure what’s on the menu? Bring along your favorite dish – they’ll understand. Lifestyle changes are common during the summer. Some people increase activities through bike-riding, hiking or swimming, while others decrease theirs, spending long, lazy afternoons watching TV. Diabetics should monitor their blood sugar very carefully if their daily routine has changed Do I take insulin at 6:00 o’clock my time or their time? If you’re traveling, you should consult with your physician about your insulin requirements and time zone differences. You should also look into obtaining emergency supplies in another state or overseas, just in case your luggage gets lost or the extreme cold temperatures in a cargo hold – or the heat of a car’s trunk – damages your medication. “By taking just a few extra precautions, concludes Dr. Giegerich, “diabetics can and should enjoy the summertime with no adverse affects upon their health.”

Seniors and Heat Did you know that each year, more people die from heat related events than from natural disasters we hear about in the summers, such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes? A single heat wave in Chicago in 1995 killed more than 500 people. Additionally, temperatures in the City may be 10 degrees higher than in rural areas. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Normally, the body cools itself by increasing blood flow to the skin, causing sweating. But when the body cannot cool itself, its core temperature rises, causing heat stroke. This condition can lead to severe permanent damage to vital organs. What can seniors do during Brooklyn’s hot, humid summers, particularly if they reside in older, non-air conditioned buildings or homes? Dr. Tucker Woods, Vice Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Long Island College Hospital (LICH) of Brooklyn, offers the following tips: Spend as much time as possible in “cooling centers.” These can be malls, public libraries, or

training your child, but helping your child to become a better person. This is the place you go to when you want your child to be in good hands. Jaime's husband James trained under Jamie's father Bruce Hodes for 28 years. Bruce Hodes is head of AAU Karate for the Metropolitan area. Mr. Bruce Hodes has over 40 years of teaching as well as training. He is also a retired public school teacher. James Esopo's competitive career Highlights include...Junior Olympic Bronze Medallist, 6-Time USA Amateur Athletic Union National Champion, WKC World Championship Bronze Medallist, 2-Time AJKA Euro Cup Bronze Medallist, 10-Time AAU Regional Champion. James Esopo is also a Certified Personal Trainer as well as a Certified Nutritionist. Mr. Esopo also has a B.A. in Economics from St. Francis College. So give your child the summer he or she deserves. You will walk away knowing you did something positive for your child. Parents can also take interest in the class and join with their child to grow and learn. Experience something wonderful together, while bringing you closer to your child. Summer is still here, so talk to your child and to your partner. Then call Shotokan Karate Center at 718.253.0303. Someone will be there to answer all your concerns.

Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of the soldiers fighting overseas for our freedom? I have and if you haven’t, it’s time to do so. Week in and week out we given bad news about U.S. soldiers killed in the line of duty. The rigorous training the soldiers go through just to prepare for battle is one that should be looked at as not only courageous but just plain brutal. At times when you want to be the best or have the best it requires that level of commitment and tough work ethic. When you are going into the gym do you have that same level of commitment and work ethic? I’m in no way saying that preparing for war is easy or similar to the battle of losing weight but there are some comparison you can take with you to be ready for success. Getting into shape is no easy task, if it was then we would all be in shape. The reality is we aren’t even close. Obesity continues to rise in adults as well as young children and it’s spreading like wild fire. The battle of obesity is a war in itself except we don’t look at it that way. Too often it’s not taken seriously, until it’s too late. Recently a TV show started with Shaquille O’Neal working with overweight children helping them lose weight. This show definitely is what

we need to see because it’s really a big problem. There are two things we need to do in order to fix the battle of obesity. Number 1 we must take full responsibility for our own actions. Gaining weight is not the fault of fast food restaurants; it’s your fault. This is hard to swallow, but it’s true. McDonald’s doesn’t have to be in your everyday plan, but you have a choice on whether it is or not. Secondly you need to be committed and consistent in your approach when you’re battling weight gain. The military does not go into Iraq without a strategy. And while I am not for the actions that are taken place there you cannot deny the commitment the soldiers have to help us live freely without fear. I know you’re thinking that this does not really relate to getting in shape but it does. If you can practice the commitment, the work ethic, and accept responsibility for your own actions you too can find success and courage in your fight with obesity. Allow me to finish this off by saying thank you to the men and women who risk their lives to ensure our safety and hope to see you home soon. Stop Athlete’s Foot in it’s Tracks! By Nemaan Ghuman, DPM Summer is officially here, so let talk about a very common foot problem that can affect all of us. It’s the condition most of us are familiar with and it starts with a burning and itching sensation on your feet. Chances are if your feet are feeling like they are on fire you may have athlete’s foot. Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus. Although you can have the problem on other parts of your body, when it appears on feet it is called tinea pedis. Fungus likes warm, dark and damp areas. A sweaty foot inside a closed dark sneaker is the perfect environment for it grow. As such, the humid and hot summer weather brings on most of the common symptoms are burning and itching on the bottom of your feet. Sometimes you can have the infection in between your toes, and the skin becomes macerated, appearing white. In severe cases, the skin can break and bacteria can enter the foot leading to infection. This problem is most prevalent in diabetics. Other symptoms include scaling on the bottom of the foot, blistering with clear fluid, and raw red skin exposed. There are several effective over-the-counter antifungal treatments for tinea pedis in your pharmacy’s foot care aisle. They come in a

July 24, 2007

variety of forms including creams, sprays and powders and can cure most athlete’s foot and relieve you of the itching and burning. Treatments need to be used one to two times per day for a period of one to four weeks. Even though the itching and burning effect of athlete’s foot is annoying to most people, if you are diabetic, or suffer from circulation problems, this condition can be downright deadly. If you have diabetes, or over-thecounter medications are not helping you, it may be time to take a trip to the podiatrist’s office. Sometimes it becomes necessary to use a more effective antifungal medication, which is only available by prescription. The foot doctor may also offer other tips to alleviate the problem or prevent it altogether. Some of these tips include, wearing cotton socks, and changing them often. Also try to avoid sneakers so as to allow your feet to breathe. Your doctor has other solutions as well. Finally remember that because tinea pedis is a fungal infection is it contagious, so you can spread it to others. Early treatment is most effective and will also prevent others from contracting the disease. See your podiatrist today to help keep your feet their best this summer.

Is This The Last Parade I have to admit, it was a wonderful day Saturday June 23, 2007. For the first time in my life I attended the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade. The amount of people there were beyond my own expectations. Police officers were as friendly as I have ever seen, and I saw neither crime nor mischief among the thousands of people who attended. There were guys dressed up as mermaids and girls dressed up like the kind of mermaids I wish to encounter if left at sea. The costumes created by the many parade goers were something to behold. Our photographers captured some moments we wish you enjoy. I’m hoping next June brings us the 26th Annual Parade, I’m sure it will be bigger and better than ever. The Brooklynville Magazine would like to extend a heart felt thank you to all those who participated in making the day one we will soon not forget.

An Outside Living Room Whether trying to disconnect from technology, reconnect with nature or simply wind down from the everyday bustle, more of us are doing so in our new living room...the backyard. According to the American Institute of Architects, the outdoor living trend continues to gain traction as Americans invest in upscale landscaping and outdoor amenities. In fact, this trend has become a way of life for many of us. We're looking to bring the indoors out and to do so with as little fanfare as possible. In other words, we want a beautiful space, without the upkeep. If you are getting in on outdoor living, a good place to start is with a solid fence. More than an outdoor accessory, a well-built fence is the best way to gain a little privacy and define your personal outdoor space. The look of wood is one way to create warmth for a privacy fence, but with wood comes maintenance.

Vinyl privacy fences with the authentic look of wood, unlike natural wood can withstand the element of rain and shine because it is designed with exceptional impact strength and UV resistance. What's more, who has time to repaint, restain or generally maintain a fence that ultimately degrades over time? Maintenance is among the top reasons for designing your outdoor living room. Many homeowners want a traditional-looking fence, yet wood is often less desirable because of the high maintenance and replacement costs. By combining easy-care vinyl with a true-to-life wood-grain texture, homeowners can have their cake and eat it, too. Or, in this case, have their outdoor living space and enjoy it, too. The idea behind this outdoor living revolution is about winding down and taking time to enjoy life. By opting for a lowmaintenance vinyl fence that emulates the warm look of wood, you can get the best of both worlds and will likely be the envy of your neighbors.

Hazy Days And Air Pollution Learning more about air quality and how you can improve it may help you breathe a little easier. Poor air quality can be bad for your health. A sky that seems more brownish than clear blue is one warning sign that air is polluted. This pollution is caused when tiny particles or pollutants from cars and factories and other sources combine with the sunlight. These tiny particles can aggravate asthma and allergies. Before you go outside, check the Air Quality Index at www.airnow.gov/. This index is like a weather forecast, but it tells you how healthy or unhealthy the air is outside your home. Days when the air quality is at its worst are known as code red days. On these days, people sensitive to the air should remain inside. In addition to cooling your home, running a

portable air cleaner will help trap small particles that you may otherwise breathe. A portable air cleaner that has been given a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) seal may reduce the level of airborne pollutants in a home. 57 percent of air-cleaner owners believe that their air cleaners have had a large impact on the quality of indoor air. Compare the CADR information on different air cleaners. First look at the suggested room size. Then refer to the dust, tobacco smoke and pollen CADR numbers. The higher the numbers, the faster the unit filters the air. If the room size and CADR ratings are the same across two products, the airfiltering performance is similar. You can then weigh the importance of product features, such as noise levels and design.

Romeo and Juliet in Central Park The cover of the program for the Public Theater’s latest show for its Shakespeare in the Park series is incredibly fitting. It has a simple pink background with the words “Shakespeare in the Park Romeo and Juliet” in bright red. It indeed sets the tone for the evening- simplicity coupled with bold, romantic choices. Shakespeare in the Park has become, rightfully so, a tradition here in New York City. Every performance I have seen has always been enhanced with the park as its backdrop. More theatre should be produced outside actually- it harkens back to the Grecian amphitheatres where theatre was first performed. Out of doors, in the cool night air the actors seem a bit freer, the audience a bit more jovial and relaxed. The night I went with some friends there was a threat of rain and even under those conditions the house was still packed. And there is a cross culture of people in the audience. From patrons who donate thousands of dollars for tickets to the people like me who wait online every year for 5 or 6 hours for free tickets. The set for “Romeo and Juliet” is pretty simple in form. A large wrought iron bridge over a small pool of water only about 2 inches deep completes the set. The actors trudge through the water in almost all of the scenes and although it was an interesting choice it didn’t seem to have a real purpose. An enterprising conceptual choice by the scenic designer Mark Wendland, but in the end it did not add to the story. Bold choices are needed in theatre but when they do not have a sharp, clear purpose, or move the story along, then it seems to be just for show. When we first meet Romeo (Oscar Isaac) he is grief stricken over the fair Rosalind. Whoa is Romeo; he feels he will never ever ever love again. Of course, until the following evening when he meets the lovely Juliet- wonderfully played by Lauren Ambrose of “Six Feet Under” fame. Their eyes lock on their first meeting, but not with the pop and dazzle one comes to expect from these two “star crossed lovers”. Shakespeare definitely wrote this scene as an ode to “love at first sight” but Ambrose and Isaac miss the mark a bit. But they more than make up for it in the rest of the show. They have an ease in playing these young characters. They both capture the impetuousness of youth, the drama that comes with one’s first love. Lauren Ambrose especially captures teenage longing-flurrying around the stage with the flightiness of a butterfly who wants to escape her parents’ cage. The famous

balcony scene moves quickly and smoothly – we really do believe these two are falling in love. Near the end of the scene the two are practically crawling towards each other- helpless to their own passion. The rest of the cast is in fine form with a few minor exceptions. The first great monologue of the night comes from the effervescent Christopher Evan Welch. He plays Mercutio with an intelligence and frivolity that befit this playful character. He lights up Central Park with his “Queen Mab” speech. He is the only actor who makes the small pond that is the stage useful. It is his veritable playground and he uses it to his full advantage to make his words come to life. The Nurse, played by Camryn Manheim, is quite good. She is funny and sweet and we believe she loves Juliet with all her heart. The one flaw in her performance is a ridiculous fake snort she adds to her laugh to get a few cheap laughs from the audience. It is an old trick which sadly cheapens her performance a bit. Another really impressive, strong actor is Saidah Arrika Ekulona who plays Juliet’s mother, Lady Capulet. When she finds her nephew Tybalt dead after another altercation with the warring Montague family her performance is awe inspiring. I rarely see a performance of grief so strong and so true where I feel I am witnessing real life. The play ceased to exist and I felt that I was watching the true account of a woman who lost a family member. Theatre is a mere reflection of life and it is a true rarity to find a performance that transcends the stage and makes me feel I am witnessing actual life. The one misstep was the casting of Austin Pendelton as Friar Laurence. This is a pivotal role and he has two levels to his acting- boring or loud. He tends to fly through his monologues, making no sense along the way. The costumes are well fitting for a production that leans towards simplicity. Juliet is seen in mostly white, virginal attire while the hot headed Tybalt is outfitted in a flaming red vest. The death scene at the end of the play follows the path of being dramatic yet simple. The stage is covered in small lights giving it a soft candlelight glow. The two actors bring a depth of emotion to the scene that comes from an honest, grief induced turmoil. How can Romeo live without Juliet? How could Juliet live without her Romeo? If you are looking simple pleasures- “Romeo and Juliet” in Central Park is your ticket. A night of theatre under the stars, watching some great acting which, for some reason, sounds so even more melodic coupled with the singing of the crickets in Central Park. “Romeo and Juliet” is produced by The Public Theater in association with Bank of America. Purple Heart for 1.5 Million Americans Exactly 225 years ago in August, General George Washington created a medal for his brave Colonial soldiers. With very little to work with, he had his wife Martha cut out some purple velvet and sew the word “MERIT” on the middle of the heart-shaped cloth. That was the birth of the Purple Heart medal. Three soldiers received the Badge of Military Merit, as Washington called the award. The ceremony took place in Newburgh, N.Y. on August 7, 1782. On that day, records show General Washington wrote the following: “The road to glory in a patriot army and free country is thus open to all.” During the ensuing years, records were misplaced in the archives until General Douglas MacArthur revived the medal and had it redesigned. In a huge celebration on Washington’s birthday, February 22, 1932, the newly designed Purple Heart was shown to the world. With a bust of General Washington in gold

Page 12

surrounded by purple with a gold edge, the medal is one of the most attractive in existence today. The Purple Heart is also the oldest military decoration in present use in the world. Over 1.5 million Americans have been awarded the medal. An estimated 500,000 wear it proudly today across America. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin, in the name of those killed in action or who die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration. An organization known as the Military Order of the Purple Heart was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all those who have received the decoration. Composed exclusively of Purple Heart recipients, it is the only veterans service organization composed strictly of combat-wounded veterans.

Caipirinha The Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail. The caipirinha is a blend of sweet and tangy, with an aftertaste that both warms and bites. The word “caipirinha” literally translates to “a hillbilly woman,” which isn’t the best image conjured when bellying up to the bar. But like any well-mixed spirit, a couple caipirinhas can transform any baldheaded Britney into a sumptuous Scarlett.

Ingredients Old-fashioned glass, 2-3 limes, 1-3 tablespoons of sugar, 2 1/2 ounces of cachaça (Sagatiba preferred), Ice Cubes

Cut limes into wedges. Muddle wedges and sugar with a pestle inside the old-fashioned glass. Add ice and cachaça. Stir and serve. (Makes one serving). If you’re an incurable herb and can’t find any cachaça around, feel free to substitute it with vodka for a caipiroska, rum for a caipirissima, or sake and tangerines instead of limes for a caipisakê.

Where’s Your Ideal Weight First, Spain’s Fashion Week banned models sized 0 to 2 from walking the runway during the shows. Next, the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan declared a ban on models smaller than size 8, and then Vogue embraced a plus-sized figure, Jennifer Hudson, by featuring her on the cover. In the past year, the fashion industry has come under increased scrutiny for fostering unrealistic images of beauty, and it’s evident that the stage is set for a major shift in cultural perceptions of how society views size and weight. And in a society where two out of every three American adults are overweight, promoting realistic expectations for weight loss is critical to helping consumers lead healthier lives. To help women achieve realistic and healthy weight loss, Based on the guiding principle that there is no one ideal weight or size that suits everyone, and that each individual should set her own personal weight-loss goal that is realistic and achievable. We have always tried to be our own person

July 24, 2007

and live up to our own definition of an ideal size that feels right for you and for your body. When I heard about the Find Your Slim campaign, I thought it was refreshing for a weight-loss company to deliver a message that was empowering—it’s freeing to be encouraged to set and achieve your own personal weight-loss goal. That is a message worth spreading. Slim-Fast has an approach to reaching personal weight-loss goal and is encouraging consumers to do the same by setting a simple, doable weight-loss goal of between 10 and 20 pounds. “Over the years, we’ve come to realize the impact unrealistic expectations of size can have on quality of life,” stated Dr. Denise Martz, practicing psychologist, professor and expert in the area of body image and size. “If women are not happy with their size, it creates avoidance behaviors and they don’t engage in life.” To learn more about Slim-Fast meal replacement products and the “Find Your Slim” campaign, visit www.slim-fast.com.

High Beaming Is it I or are most drivers on the road driving with their high beams on. I drive on streets and highways and I find those fancy cars with the clear blue annoying lights. I’m sure they love driving at night so everyone can see that their lights are different. A lot of these cars are new ones, which come with the nice blue lights. We also have the other drivers who don’t have a new car, but from a distance that can tell, I can. The new cars have good nice blue lights and the older models have the cheap blue

lights. They don’t seem to give more visibility, just more annoying light. The driver doesn’t care; he’s behind the wheel, feeling like he has a new car. The last time I checked, driving with your high beams on was against the law. Then we have the moron brigade, those who drive around at night with their high beams on. Some drive older cars with dual headlines on, some drive around with the high beams on, and then others don’t have enough bright lights so they go over to a local auto parts store and purchase another set of lights to go under the ones they already have. When nighttime comes they all come out to show everyone, “hey look at me, I can blind other drivers” Lets all thank the lord, we are able to flip our rear view mirror to nigh vision.

The last time I checked, driving with your high beams on was against the law.
