Artificial Intelligence: Blocking or regulation?

By Ismael Cala

Last weekend the networks burned with opinions for or against the request of more than a thousand influential people in the field of technology (led by Elon Musk) to pause for six months the exponential advances in the implementation of artificial intelligence. .

In parallel, it was announced that Italy was the first European country to block the use of the ChatGPT tool, considering that there is not enough regulation to guarantee the rights of users not to be victims of fake news.

A series of images of Pope Francis wearing Balenciaga designer outfits also circulated and which turned out to have been generated by another tool named Midjourney. The truth is that it seems that the effects of artificial intelligence are out of control.

Although it is true that the ideal is for laws to be one step ahead of technology at the regulation level, reality should also make us think about the effects of the exponentiality (or speed) of adoption of new technologies compared to previous times. .

In a world in which we will not know when a video is real or generated by an AI (Artificial Intelligence in

English), it is necessary to be more aware, awake and prepared to discern the stimuli that reach us and that can begin to make us doubt even our name.

And if we go to other areas such as academics, we are already beginning to talk about the effect that these new technologies will have on education. Every day it will be more difficult for teachers to be able to measure to what extent an assignment is fulfilled by the student or used an AI tool to do it.

Neither the blockade in Italy, nor all the obstacles in the world will stop technology from advancing, so now more than ever we must bet on critical thinking and our ability to adapt and get out of this revolution.

Only those who understand that change is here to stay and who are flexible and agile enough will be the ones who take best advantage of technology and thus be one step ahead to use it for what it is: a tool that can save us time, effort and hours of life that we can dedicate to other much more productive activities.
