Mourning Service Debuts This Month Paul Collier Red&Black Editor-in-chief

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Red & Black was invited to view a rehearsal for Nathan Walter’s honors project play, “Mourning Service.” It was my first experience in Olin 102, a room with black acoustic panels on its back walls and a small stage surrounded by chairs on all sides. The set was simple and to the point: a single gray door mounted on a recycled part of the stage from the musical “Western Civilization,” and a used couch that sat on the opposite side of the stage. It was also the first night of offbook rehearsal, one of the most important nights of any production as it takes a major step towards being performance-ready. The rehearsal showed me that the cast of “Mourning Service” was ready to perform in a way that’s even more essential than memorizing every line: they understand the soul of the show, their characters, and the people they’re working with. Whenever a cast is off-book the first time, acting can be rough as they attempt to recall the minute details of each line. However, this did not keep me from gaining a full understanding of each character. Even when a scene broke, stage director Katie Krise was quick to remind each actor about lines, and the actors were quick to snap right back into character, or even had enough of an understanding of who they were

playing to adlib through in ways that felt natural to a viewer. Rowan Angstadt ‘24, who plays Gavin Aster Jr, discussed this with me when he was not on stage: “I have a good grasp of character motivation. Throughout the show Nathan has talked with us about who our characters are and has asked us what characters might do or wear, so we’ve also had a lot of ownership in bringing everyone to life.” This was obvious before we even discussed this point. Every character is distinct and interesting, and they work together in a lot of exciting ways. It also comes from a sincere care for each other. Playwright and director Nathan Walter ‘22 said “I’ve worked with toxic directors in a toxic environment, and I don’t believe actors are a means to an end. I believe they’re people, and they shouldn’t be treated like objects.” This was also obvious throughout the rehearsal. Nathan and Katie support the actors and encourage them throughout, telling them to keep confident and know they’re more than capable of performing even the more difficult scenes in a show that explores themes like self-worth and the nuclear family. The actors are also committed to supporting Nathan’s vision by being the best they can be. Chris Sonnenberg ‘22, who plays Gavin Aster Sr, told me that they feel “stressed with this as an honors project, but we also feel like we can and want to make this as good as possible because of that.” I specifically noted one instant when an actor successfully delivered a complicated and emotionally charged speech, after which Nathan hugged them and spun them around in a circle. The emotional connection between actors is there,

Actors reheasre for Mourning Service.

and this is going to be obvious when the play is debuted. Another part of this relationship comes in the focus on the audience. This is a play that can be criticized as nihilistic and defeatist, and Nathan welcomes this: “Some people will be mad, and I’ll tell them they’re right. I don’t want to restrict my audience; I want them to come and think about what they’re seeing. It’s more beautiful when someone says they hate the work. You have to be invested to be angry.” Nathan says he does not want to make the audience mad, but he is not afraid of engaging in a dialogue with them, and the rehearsal again made that clear. The set is minimalist and intimate so the focus can be on the actors and the dialogue; the staging was checked at every angle as Nathan continuously moved around the room to ensure the

Courtesy Mourning Service

audience was always engaged. This was my favorite part of this play’s process. Nathan says he cares about completing the Honors Project, but much more important to him is being able to fulfill a dream of putting his own vision on stage. He cares for all the people involved and all the people involved care for each other, and their primary goal is to work together to create something beautiful and difficult. They hope you’ll join them in Olin 102 on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at 7 pm to be engaged in what I find to be a morally and emotionally challenging play, but one coming from a needed dialogue and a place of deep devotion from the cast. Also be sure to show up early: because the seating is so intimate, audience members cannot be let in long after the 7 pm start time, and seating is limited.

Current Events China Commits Act of Aggression Against Taiwan Michael Burke Red & Black Contributor

Tensions again have arisen in the Far East as Taiwan reports 39 Chinese warplanes flying over Taiwanese airspace on Sunday Oct. 3. This is just another chess piece moved in China’s quest for domination of the Asian seas. The fall of democracy in the 40’s led to the communist People’s Republic of China that we see today, and the subsequent democracy fled to the island of Taiwan. This island of 23 million people proves to be a continuing thorn in the foot of the big red mainland, and western governing ideals like those of Taiwan are completely rejected, chastazied, and suppressed. Most western nations as well as quite a few in the pacific have banded together and determined that China is the enemy. Democratic regions in East Asia such as Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Australia are all beginning to become under threat as

the Red Dragon’s sphere of influence continues to grow closer. These 39 warplanes were not the first, but simply 39 more warplanes that encroached on Taiwanese seas. The Chinese have been flying military aircraft since September 2020 over their little democratic brother. In lieu of these shows of force, the U.S. state department warned Beijing to put an end to the flights in hopes of preventing further destabilization

in the already tense region. America also pledged to continue their support of Taiwan’s military, since the U.S. is the largest supplier of weapons and defense systems to the island nation. Napoleon Bonaparte had once referred to China as the “Sleeping Giant”, because it has largely remained a neutral powerhouse throughout history, free from quarrels in Europe and America. Now, it seems the giant has awoken, and it has become

aggressive. China is now flexing its muscles, showing the United States, President Biden, and the rest of the world that it is no longer afraid and it will take whatever it wants. Between the fall of the USSR to the 2010s, America was the sole superpower on Earth. The 2020’s have ushered in a new decade and a new foe to democracy, this time not in the form of a bear, but a dragon.

Biden’s Address to UN Sets High Goals Michael Burke Red & Black Contributor

For the first time in his fledgling leadership, President Biden was tasked to give his address to the United Nations General Assembly. The majority of the content in his speech was a battle plan of sorts on how to

tackle the various issues that continue to plague both the U.S. and the world. Coronavirus was one of the issues that got a large portion of the President’s time in the speech. Biden’s plan to “vaccinate the world” was outlined by lofty goals such as achieving a 70 percent global vaccinate rate by the Fall of next year. In order to achieve this, the President will send 500 million more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on top of the already-promised doses abroad in an attempt to help finally snuff out the virus. The U.S. had already made the commitment of 580 million doses, even though only 160 million, or 27 percent, have made it out of the country. Foreign Relations also inhaled a significant portion of

President Biden addresses the United Nations.

Biden’s address. The American leader explained that the United States was resuming relations with the European Union under his administration, even though that information conflicts with other current events. America still has not opened travel to fully vaccinated European Union citizens even though the E.U. has opened the gates to vaccinated American tourists. As China begins to obtain a stranglehold on Southeast Asia, Biden claimed the counter-alliance of India, Japan, Australia and the United States served as a strong defence. On paper, as the President claimed, the alliance is there to “take on challenges ranging from health security to climate to emerging technologies.” However, the four democratic Pacific

countries seem to be more so in an alliance to stonewall the rapid spread of the Chinese’s political influence and dominance. Lastly, the Commander-and-Chief briefly discussed the climate issue. Biden pledged $11 billion dollars to nations under the poverty line who are combating the effects of climate change in an effort to slow and maybe even reverse its effects. This UN General Assembly address served as a way for President Biden to redeem himself from the Afghanistan catastrophe as well as quell the negative backlash from France and other nations amidst the controversy surrounding the AUKUS agreement. He made big and ambitious promises, but only time will tell if they are acted upon.

ASAP Prevents Sexual Assault on Campus Sydney Hirst Red & Black Contributor

Founded in 2018, Advocates for Sexual Assault Prevention (ASAP) is a student run organization whose mission is to provide information about the prevalence and harm of rape culture and sexual assault on college campuses nationwide. We also provide resources and support to survivors. In previous years, ASAP has hosted events such as ‘Take Back the Night’ and Bystander Intervention Trainings. Historically, Take Back the Night began as an organization in the 1970s with the goal of ending sexual violence towards people of all genders. The name itself centered around the idea that women deserve the right to walk alone at night without fear of being harassed, raped or otherwise harmed. This organization led to events on college campuses across the United States, all in hopes of providing support for victims and additional awareness of sexual violence. This, as previously stated, includes a similar event held on

W&J’s campus in the past. Additionally, ASAP has also hosted a series of Bystander Intervention Training events in the past. These events served as a way for students to learn what it means to be a good bystander. This includes but is not limited to being aware of your surroundings, noticing those around you and intervening if necessary. Bystander training can be especially useful on college campuses for those who may want to help in a particular situation but are unsure of how to do so. Being a good, active bystander gives someone the potential to help someone out of an uncomfortable situation. Not only were these trainings a way to educate new advocates on the matter, but an opportunity for anyone on W&J’s campus to educate themselves as well. With the COVID-19 pandemic, ASAP was unable to accomplish many of its goals last year. This year, ASAP is hoping to better educate the W&J campus on Title IX, consent, and how to be a good bystander on a college campus and beyond. ASAP also hopes to provide a safe space for survivors and provide them with any resources and support they may need. If you have any questions regarding ASAP or are interested in joining, please reach out to ASAP President, Sydney Hirst via email at hirsts@washjeff.edu.

Jojo Siwa Champions LGBTQ+ Representation

Jojo Siwa dances with her partner.

Theresa Kinkley Red & Black Contributor

JoJo Siwa has recently been in the news for being the first contestant in Dancing With The Stars to have a partner who is the same sex. Of course, this has happened with others in different countries, but this is the first in the American version of Dancing With The Stars. Both JoJo and her dancing partner, Jenna, seem very happy to be experiencing this, and they are both very excited to see what comes of it.

Courtesy Monsters and Critics

All of us queer folks hope this will mean more same sex couples in future seasons of Dancing With The Stars. Of course, Siwa has been in the news a lot lately, as she came out as queer, and has talked a lot about her girlfriend. Her girlfriend, Kylie Prew, is very accepting and excited for Siwa. “Every single thing that I talk about, mention with the show, Ky is right there so supportive,” Siwa stated. “Just literally like my number one cheerleader, always gives me the hype up, and then always give me the cuddles.” She continued. Siwa and Prew have been in the news a lot recently, especially for the young LGBTQ+ community that feels they are getting a lot of new role models. This is very good for the community, as it has influenced more

young followers of Siwa to speak out on their sexualities. Many fans of Siwa believe that they can be more open now, as their role model is now out safely. As for Dancing With The Stars, the show is currently on it’s 30th season, and this is the first time we have seen a same-sex couple. This brings hope to the community that it will make other shows realize that it is okay to be progressive and do things that some might not agree on. Of course, who someone loves should never be a disagreement, but unfortunately, many people do not see it that way. Dancing With The Stars is taking a huge step forward by giving Siwa a female partner. In the past, it had been fully limited to a male and

female partner. This shows that ABC and other networks are taking a step towards helping everyone realize that being in the LGBTQ+ community and having a same-sex relationship should not be discouraged or feared. Siwa is more than the best candidate to be the first contestant to be in a same-sex partnership, as she has been a major influence lately. Her coming out video was a headliner for weeks, and her and Prew are still a constant topic of discussion. Prew and Siwa seem very happy, and that happiness is spreading onto others. Siwa, after years of being hated for no reason online, is finally getting good publicity, and a healthy relationship that many fans adore and envy. We cannot wait to see JoJo succeed in this season of Dancing With The Stars.

Animal Farm Defied Its Banned Status in USSR Michael Burke Red & Black Contributor

Banned Books week began on the last week of September. In the spirit of the holiday, it’s vital to look at and discuss these novels that have been censored in some way shape or form. Political books have a tendency to be banned by the various institutions they criticize. All Quiet On the Western Front was banned and infamously burned by the Nazis due to fear of dissent against the war effort and German Nationalism. Napoleon silenced over forty newspapers during his reign over France. The political book that has gained arguably the most notoriety for falling victim to censorship comes in the form of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. On the razor thin surface, Animal Farm is just a short but excellent novel about a few animals that kick out their human farmer and run the farm on their own. But a simple story like this should most certainly not be banned, let alone sell millions of copies, right? Orwell’s novel was primarily banned in the Soviet Union, not be-

cause of the literary farm animals, but how these farm animals portray the people they represent. Each character as well as their actions served as an analogy to some sort of Soviet leader or member of their society. In an effort to not spoil the events of such classic literature, the simple synopsys is that these animals’ actions and personality traits are very closely related to the actions of Communist leaders and Communist Party ideologies. Through Orwell’s writing, these actions and traits are portrayed in a very negative and criticism-fueled light. Being that the USSR was very quick to suppress and censor any literature or media that even possibly made the reader think poorly of the state, as one can guess, Animal Farm was not to be sold or bought in the country until restrictions were loosened in the 1980’s. The novel did not just become a classic because it attacked Red leadership. Orwell’s writing style and the fascinating plot make it quite the page turner. The book can easily entertain as well as it informs and it’s truthfully a downright excellent read. Even better, it can be finished on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Literature has the power to open minds, broaden horizons and bring on different perspectives unlike anything else. In some cases, it can bring readers and consumers to question established beliefs, institutions and practices. This is exactly what Orwell’s magnificent Animal Farm could have done if it were allowed to circulate in Red Russia. Say it had not been banned, there is no telling how Eastern Europe and the rest of the globe would be different today. Maybe even for the better.

Theatres Are Superior to Streaming Services Michaela Shellem Red & Black Contributor

Movies are an integral part of our culture. If you miss out on the most recent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, chances are you’ll be missing out on all the memes, YouTube reviews, and movie references that are trending all over social media for the next few months. So in late 2019, when the Covid Pandemic forced us to stay inside, it was vital that we still had ways to access movies. For a while, production

An empty theatre waits for viewers.

companies attempted to postpone the release of their films so that they could be released in theaters. However, as the pandemic raged on into 2020, the chance of a quick conclusion became less and less likely. The film industry needed to find a way around the constraints that Covid had created, and what better way than to utilize all of the popular streaming services that were available? It was perfect; people could still enjoy movies while remaining in the comfort and safety of their own home. As a result, there has been a recent surge in streaming releases. This surge of releases, which include popular films like Disney’s Soul and Warner Bros’ Godzilla VS Kong, has people asking if theatrical releases will soon be made obsolete. While these streaming services have certainly helped movies remain at the forefront of our culture

throughout the pandemic, are they really how we want to continue to go about our movie watching experiences in the future? As Imari Berkley ‘25 puts it, “The theater experience just adds a flair to watching movies.” As Imari is saying, when you’re in an actual theater, the stakes are simply higher than they would be at home. When you’re in the theater, there is less temptation to pull out your phone and scroll instead of watching. The screen is bigger, the volume is louder. The trailers are more exciting. The atmosphere in general is so much greater. And let’s admit it: movie theater popcorn just tastes so much better. All of this is without mentioning the poor quality of original films from streaming services. Sure, sometimes there’s the odd gem, like Hulu’s Palm

Springs. However, unfortunately, the great majority of these films end up missing the mark, like the Kissing Booth trilogy. These streaming service originals simply do not compare to films made specifically for the theater. However, as Paige Tudi ‘25 points out, “I do prefer theaters, but streaming is definitely more convenient.” Paige has a great point; streaming is undeniably more convenient. But watching a movie isn’t always supposed to be about convenience. Sometimes, it’s about escaping yourself for a little while. Sometimes, it’s about getting lost in a fictional world of adventure. Sometimes, it’s about putting in a little extra time and effort to leave the house so that you can really appreciate the experience. And in these cases, it is evident that theatrical releases are far more valuable.

Tom Brady Overcomes Unpopularity Sofia Jenkins Red & Black Staff

Tom Brady returned to play his old team of the New England Patriots on Oct. 3, 2021. In the most watched Sunday night football game since 2012, Brady left his return to his previous home with a win of 19 to 17. Tom Brady has been arguably the biggest name in the National Football League for a long time now. He has been in the league since 2000 when he was drafted to the New England Patriots, and he stayed there until he decided to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Throughout Brady’s now 21 years in the NFL, he has created an enormous following of supporters who would do whatever he says no matter what team he is on. Yet, in those 21 years, he has also created a big group of haters and naysayers to some of his recent actions and of Brady’s image in general. W&J students had a lot to say about Tom Brady and their feelings about him in general and his recent move from his New England Patriots. College

students make up a big chunk of who watches NFL football every Thursday, Sunday, and Monday, so their opinion of players is very important when it comes to the amount of views each game receives. Through interviews with some students on campus, almost every single student that was interviewed held the same opinion about Brady: they do not like him at all. Chase Grinnell ‘24 stands strongly with his opinion that Tom Brady is a bad guy whom he has never liked. He bases a lot of his opinion about some of the more recent news coverage the Brady family has gotten, and their more unconventional way of doing certain things. Some other reasons why he does not like Brady is because of the “Deflategate” scandal from the 2015 Super Bowl. Even students from farther away from W&J, like Gabby Galla, hold strong opinions against Tom Brady because of how she believes that “while the Patriots were actively pushing Tom Brady out, I think he ultimately made the jump to actively leave which I think also showed that for him it was not always about the organization and the fan base.” Brady always portrayed in the news how he was “all about his fans,” but according to the students

on the W&J campus, was it all a lie? In alliance with Grinnell and Galla, Madeline Heiser ‘24 believes “Brady is a great football player, but he is too full of himself for me to like him. There are so many other quarterbacks who are just as good as Brady, and yet he somehow always gets all of the attention from the press.” But the biggest question formulated from these interviews is: why exactly do people not like Tom Brady? The amount of different answeres received was astonishing. It honestly proposes the question of how does Tom Brady have such a big fan base and is so widely renowned when he has so many scandals and errors throughout his career? Paul Collier ‘23 thinks that it all comes down to winning. “Regardless of how many faults Brady has, or the fact that he has always been surrounded by a great team, he has won seven super bowls. It’s like Michael Jordan vs LeBron James. People will always think Michael Jordan is a better player just because he has won more championships.” Winning is a quick and easy way to determine who’s the best even if other factors go into that argument. With how much Brady has won. even if you hate him, he’ll still be respected by many.

Cardinals Defeat Dodgers in Wild Card Game Michael Burke Red & Black Staff

The St. Louis Cardinals might have just been the hottest team in baseball going into the postseason. A below .500 first half of the season was put in the rear view mirror as the Cardinals rattled off a historic 17 wins in September to jump into the second Wild Card spot and make the National League playoffs. While the Redbirds came into the game with an impressive

second half (92-70), they had to face a formidable opponent on Tuesday Oct. 5, that opponent being the Los Angeles Dodgers (106-56). While the Dodgers finished second in the NL West, they are not a team to scoff at, given their incredibly talented roster and having won 14 more games than their opponent. Cy Young candidate Max Scherzer took the ball for the Dodgers, while grizzled veteran Adam Wainwright was griven pitching duties for St. Louis. The first inning was highlighted with excellent defensive plays. In the top half of the frame, LA right fielder Mookie Betts ran and hung over the foul territory fence to make a stellar catch to collect an out.

Trea Turner celebrates during the Wild Card game.

Not long after, a passed ball resulted in the Cardinals picking up their first run of the game. Wainwright himself made an excellent play, spearing a hard-hit line drive to end the bottom of the first. The third inning brought on a scare for the Cardinals, as Wainwright loaded the bases with one out. He’s a seasoned pitcher though and kept his cool, getting Trea Turner to ground into a double play, leaving the score at 1-0. Third Baseman Justin Turner got the Dodgers on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the fourth, but from then on, the game became a pitchers duel. Scherzer was lifted in the fifth in favor of a bullpen arm, and the Cardinals followed suit by plucking

their starting pitcher in the sixth. Both bullpens fared well, as the game entered the ninth inning at a 1-1 tie. St. Louis wasn’t able to make any noise in the top of the ninth, but the other half was a different story. Chris Taylor came to bat with Bellinger on first, and became a hero in the most exciting fashion. Taylor took pitcher Alex Reyes deep to walk-off the game and launch the Dodgers into the NLDS. While the Cardinals fly home for the year back to St. Louis, LA moves on to play the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS, with the first game being Oct. 8 at 9:30. This will be the first time these rivals ever clash in the postseason.

Boston Beats New York in Wild Card Game Michael Burke Red & Black Staff

Oct. has just been ushered in. Leaves will change soon, the air will get crisp, and playoff baseball is underway. MLB’s first playoff game of the 2021 Season featured one of the most famed rivalries in sports. Tuesday Oct. 5 held the American League Wild Card Game, pitting the New York Yankees (92-70) and the Boston Red Sox (92-70) in a winnertake-all grudge match. The results of the pitching were night and day. Nathan Eovaldi started on the hill for the Red Sox and hurled 5 ⅓ innings, while ex-Bucco Gerrit Cole only survived 2 full frames. Right away, the Red Sox put on theatrics for the fans at Fenway in the first inning. Xander Bogaerts took Cole to deep center, launching a home run and scoring Rafael Devers to make it 2-0 after the first. Cole threw well in the second, but couldn’t contain Kyle Schwarber the next inning. In 2015, when Cole was in a Pirates uniform, Schwarber sent Gerrit Cole’s fastball into the Allegheny River at PNC Park, essentially ending

the season for Pittsburgh. Reminiscent of that game 6 years ago, Schwarber blasted another home run off of Cole to put Boston up 3-0. Shortly thereafter, the Yankee pitcher was taken out of the game. Eovaldi threw a gem through 5 ⅓, retiring 11 straight batters until Anthony Rizzo (acquired from the Chicago Cubs) took a 79 mph pitch out over the short fence in right field. Aaron Judge in the next at bat legged out an infield single, finally honorably discharging Eovaldi from his pitching duties. Ryan Brasier came on in relief for the starter, and Gincarlo Stanton shot a double off the top of The Monster Wall in left, and Judge attempted to score. An excellent play from center fielder Kike Hernandez stopped the Yankees in their tracks, as Hernandez picked Stanton’s ball off the wall in deep left center and gunned out Judge at the plate. From then on, it was the Alex Verdugo show. His double in the 6th inning and base hit in the seventh brought around three RBIs for the Sox, making the score 6-1. Yankee slugger Stanton hit a solo home run in the 9th inning, but it was of little use other than to make the score more respectful. Final score: Red Sox 6, Yankees 2. The Yankees have been sent home, but the Sox have won their spot in the ALDS. Boston takes on the American League’s top seed Tampa Bay Rays, with game one’s first pitch at 8:00 PM on Oct. 7 at Tropicana Field in Tampa.
