The Board looks over all of the Greek life organizations that happen on this campus, and is managed by the Greek Life Coordinator Ashley Broskey. “Some think that hazing is just getting kicked around a little bit, but there is more that goes around into it. Hazing is degrad-

Club: W&J Harvard Model UN Monti’s Directors: Hard Work and Changes

Siddhanta Bista Red&Black Staff International: That is the word that comes into ones mind while thinking of the Model United Nations. For the past sixty years, the Harvard Model UN has been an important conference where over 3000 delegates from 70 different countries participate. The Harvard Model UN stands for its high level of competition as delegates debate on a myriad of relevant international issues. Its sixty-first session will be held in downtown Boston from Thursday, Feb. 12, through Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015. As in the past, Washington & Jefferson College will also be participating in the Harvard Model UN this coming year. With a strong team led by Paige Alderson, Jarred Hoffman and Jonathan Tripi, it will be interesting to see the outcomes of the conference. Dr. Gai and Dr. Misawa are the current advisors of the club, and ensure that things run smoothly. “The HMUN educates next generation of leaders in international affairs, and indeed brings together students who are outstanding leaders. I look forward to the conference and meeting new people,” says Jack Myint, a

current junior who has been involved with HMUN in the past as well. Simulating the international organization, United Nations, the Model United Nations (MUN) is where students assume the role of an ambassador to the UN. During this time, the students represent their positions and values of assigned countries, adhering to the official protocols while speaking, negotiating and drafting resolutions. The goal of the conference is to arrive at an innovative solution to the global problem that is presented, therefore teamwork and consensus among delegates is necessary. “As the years have passed, we as a college have been doing better at the conference every year and this year I am excited to see what W&J students are able to achieve. I have high expectations for this years conference,” said Dr. Misawa. The HMUN club at W&J have already begun their preparations and are underway refining their debating and critical analysis skills before the month of February. They have a huge role of putting their best foot forward because they will be representing the college at a high-level conference.

Above are the 2014-2015 Monticello’s Directors, in order, Mackie Jakobs, Seth Rimdzius , Paras Rad, Ben Rozzi, and Emil Ihnat.

Shannon Adams Red&Black Staff Nearly every student on Washington & Jefferson’s campus knows about Monticello’s, more commonly known as “Monti’s.” Located on the lower level of the Hub, Monti’s is open every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. until midnight. For those who may not be familiar with Monti’s, student workers serve milkshakes of every kind, pizza rolls, soft pretzels and nachos free of charge. The wonderfully friendly volunteers, headed by five students, provide the delicious snacks to both the sober and inebriated crowd alike. Although three of those students are newcomers when it comes to being Monticello’s directors, they have volunteered their time on numerous occasions during

the previous school year. On why he decided to apply to become a Monti’s director, Emil Ihnat ’17 said “I worked Monti’s a lot last year and it seemed like it would be easy and fun to do.” While being a Monticello’s director may not seem easy, many students have confessed that working behind the counter could be fun, as the volunteers and directors are usually seen smiling as they serve milkshakes and snacks. Being a Monticello’s director is not solely focused on working behind the counter on the weekends, however. “We have to shop for the food that will be used that coming weekend, calculate how much it will cost, plan what snacks will be served, find volunteers to work and, of course, run Mobile Monti’s,” said Ihnat as he talked about the various other responsibilities that come

with being a director. Mobile Monti’s, used for events on campus such as Big Bingo, which recently occurred on family weekend. Though it is worth all the hard work, the Monti’s directors have a handful of responsibilities. On what the future on Monticello’s might hold, Ihnat said that he and the other directors plan on getting rid of the metal cabinet behind the counter, as it is outdated and not as functional as it could be. There are also plans to remodel the entirety of the area behind the counter to make it easier for the volunteers to serve snacks. While most students enjoy Monti’s because of the free food and inviting atmosphere, it would not being about to run smoothly without the help of the five Monticello’s directors, Paras Rad, Mackie Jakobs, Ben Rozzi, Seth Rimdzius and Emil Ihnat.

History of the Football Program at W&J College

This is what the football team used to look like back in the day, when it just started out and before all of the safety equipment we know today.

Catherine McADoo Red&Black Contributor Football: Noun; A game in which two opposing teams of 11 players each defend goals at opposite ends of a field having goal posts at each end, with points being scored chiefly by carrying the ball across the opponent’s goal line and by place-kicking or drop-kicking the ball over the crossbar between the opponent’s goal posts. (dictionary.com) You may enjoy football, the field and fans and excitement.

Or you may, like freshman Christopher Aguirre, find it to be “very noisy and unpleasant.” Either way, it is hard to deny the impact that the sport has had on our school. How many people are here specifically because they were recruited to join the team? How many pep rallies have, for a time, united the student body in supporting our players? It would be hard to imagine life at Washington & Jefferson without football games, and more importantly, football

wins. But for almost the first hundred years of the school’s existence, there was no football team to speak of. Throughout the second half of the 1800s, college football began slowly rising in popularity. The students of W&J College took notice, and in the late 1880s a small group of students petitioned for the Board of Trustees to do something “to provide for the physical culture of the young men assembled.” They responded by giving the students an option. If every member of the stu-

dent body paid a small sum, they would purchase a small field that had opened near the school and, perhaps, establish an official team. Students reacted with enthusiasm, more than willing to pay a bit more money if it meant a chance to play. One example of this enthusiasm can be found in the Washington and Jeffersonian, a student-run magazine that was published monthly. The issue for the month of October 1990 clearly expressed the general attitude of the student body: “It is a mat-

SAB Takes Students to Kennywood Fright Night Julia Price Red&Black Contributor

On Friday, Sept. 26, the Student Activities Board, more commonly known as the SAB, hosted an off-campus trip to Kennywood for the opening night of the park’s annual Phantom Fright Night event. The trip required a refundable five-dollar deposit in order to secure a spot. Just over forty students attended the trip, which left on Friday at 6 p.m. and returned Saturday at 2 a.m. For those not familiar to the surrounding area, there is a classic amusement park about an hour from campus called Kennywood. It is

known for its roller coasters, and this last weekend it was transformed, as it has been every Halloween season for the past 13 years, into a frightening environment, known as Fright Knight. Fright Night guests not only enjoy riding classic Kennywood favorites such as the Phantom’s Revenge and the Thunderbolt, the park also goes all-out by dawning just about every available space with ghoulish decorations, fog machines, and olored lights as well as various other ghastly props. The park is also teaming with costumed-clad actors ready to give unsuspecting passersby a good scare. The park boasts several Halloween-themed attractions only

found during Fright Night. This includes The Villa of the Vampires, Mortem Manor, BioFear, Dark Shadows and Voodoo Bayou among others that are sure to startle the feint of heart. Jordan Dinsmore ’16 is the Student Activities Board’s offcampus director. About her thoughts on the event she said, “This event had the biggest response from the student body for any SAB offcampus event in the last two years. With over sixty people wanting to attend, I unfortunately could only take about forty students. The trip was a huge success for the SAB’s offcampus trips in regards to the large amount of interest, participants and overall enjoyment.” While many students

were unable to attend Kennywood’s Fright Night trip this year, it seems likely that the SAB will be looking into repeating the successful event in the future. Dinsmore agrees that it is likely future SAB off-campus directors will be interested in repeating the trip. To find out about other events the Student

Activities Board will be hosting both on and off-campus this year, join the SAB at their weekly meetings on Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Hub Fireplace Lounge. There are multiple opportunities to get involved and perhaps be in charge of planning similar off-campus events with Dinsmore.

Asian Cultural Association Holds Water Gun Battle on Campus Joshua Dewaine Red&Black Contributor On Thursday Sept. 25, the Asian Culture Association, ACA, held a water gun battle. Club members were treated to a beautiful day which allowed the water gun fight to go off without a hitch. Everyone was given a weapon and essentially infinite reloads from a giant bucket of water as chaos ensued. The battle lasted more than twenty minutes and when the mist finally cleared, nothing but smiles were to be seen. Strategies of participants ranged from charging into the fray and spraying wildly

to sitting far away and going for the long range artillery and sniping headshots. At the end of the day, strategy meant nothing, however, as everyone took their fair share of the watery punishment. None were spared as absolutely everyone was drenched during the battle . And to finish off the day, ACA president Haotian Guo ‘16 had the remainder of the bucket of water dumped on her not just once...but twice by board members. After the battlefield was cleared, I got to sit down and have an interview with the vice president of the club, Jonathan Tripi ‘16. When asked why the ACA decided to host

the battle he said “We decided last year during the SAB street fair, when we found some water guns and it broke out into battle, that a water gun fight would be really fun for all students involved. We try to make events as fun as possible.” The water gun battle definitely did not disappoint. With events planned to be as fun as possible, I asked the VP what the future holds for the ACA. “In the spring we are going to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in DC when all of the cherry blossom trees will be blooming and beautiful.” The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual event held by the Japan-America

society of Washington DC that represents the enduring friendship of the United States and Japan. In 1912, 3,000 cherry trees were gifted to the

United States by the mayor of Tokyo. The blooming of the trees is also considered one of the most beautiful events in the country.

Simply Irreplaceable:

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Refuses to Retire

ISIS... or Al Qaeda? Sarah Peterson Red&Black Contributor

While the world focuses on Syria and ISIS, the people who like beheading Americans, one person might ask, “What happened to the Al Qaeda?” One of the last times the militant group was in the news was when its leader, Osama bin Laden, was killed by the U.S. Navy SEALs in 2011. U.S. intelligence forces have discovered a plot, devised by veteran Al Qaeda members in Syria; to attack U.S. and British planes. Afterwards, the group went “dark” and, over the summer, the plans broke down and the group disappeared. Since 2012, the U.S. government has kept tabs on several Al Qaeda leaders; the Islamic radicals who masterminded the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The group that attempted the most recent plane attacks calls themselves the “Khorasan Group” and are based in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and

Iran. U.S. officials have often spoken about Al Qaeda’s relationship with ISIS. ISIS is a splinter group of Al Qaeda formed in 2006. “The relationship is very competitive since both want a stake in the overall Jihadist leadership movement” said the state department. The U.S. Government also confirmed that they have been closely monitoring non-metallic bombs inside American and European Airliners. The state department also believes that the Khorasan group is planning a larger scale version of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the west; which would yet again involve airliners. According to the U.S. intelligence officials, this group is more sophisticated than ISIS. The Khorasan group was found to have been working with an Al Qaeda group affiliate in the Arabian Peninsula. The U.S. attempts to cripple ISIS before they hurt more people. The other major terrorist group is still planning to hurt Americans in silence rather than in public.

It is a scene right out of the famous NBC political drama “The West Wing:” Chief Justice Roy Ashland, a liberal icon on the bench, was being urged to retire by (the fictional) Bartlet administration because of health problems. Ashland, however, refused to retire saying that there was no worthy successor who could be confirmed. A replica of the situation is now being played out in real life. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a reliable liberal vote on the bench, has been encouraged to retire by the very liberals whose rights she has been protecting. The reasoning is simple. If the 81-year-old Ginsburg retires while President Obama is in office, he will be able to

appoint another liberal in her place. The left is in a hurry because of the possibility that a Republican is elected president in November 2016. Ginsburg, however, will not step down; she is worried President Obama will not be able to appoint a worthy successor. Speaking to Elle magazine, Ginsburg said, “Who do you think President Obama could appoint at this very day, given the boundaries that we have? “If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court…So anybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they’re misguided. “As long as I can do the job full steam…I think I’ll recognize when the time comes that I can’t any longer. But now I can.” Justice Ginsburg also wants to stay on the bench because

of two people in particular: Justices Kagan and Sotomayor. She enjoys being on the court with two other females, a luxury she did not enjoy for years after Justice Sandra Day O’Connor retired. Justice Ginsburg, later in the excerpt from Elle, said, “When Sandra left, I was all alone…Now Kagan is on my left, and Sotomayor is on my right…we’re here to stay.” Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Clinton and confirmed by a vote of 96-3. A champion of women’s rights and a favorite of the political left, Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993. She was named one of the 100 Most Powerful Women by Forbes in 2009. She attended Cornell University, receiving a degree in government before graduating from Columbia Law School.

Jane Goodall Criticizes “Lack of Empathy in Modern Science” Jake Humes Red&Black Staff

In a new video, part of NOVA’s web series “The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers;” Jane Goodall speaks out against the normal paradigm of science: objectivity. The revered, 80-year-old primatologist is most wellknown for her work with chimpanzee behavior and for her work in conservation and animal rights. She was criticized early in her career for naming her subjects. “I was told you have to give them numbers because you have to be objective as a sci-

entist, and you mustn’t empathize with your subjects.” Most scientists agree that being objective is the proper form of scientific conduct because it prevents any bias or interaction by the researcher from confounding data; which can result in a failed experiment or useless data. Goodall shares a different view. While many scientists told Goodall that human beings are the only animals with personality, she has always felt them as being a part of her life. She argues that, since there’s human beings, there are “chimpanzee beings, and dog beings, and I like to talk about them as he and she…. Why wouldn’t I name them?

Any animal I’ve ever had had a name… "I couldn’t remember them if they had number. And, thanks to National Geographic, people got to know the chimpanzees as individuals… "If they had been number one, ten, fifteen, nobody would have had a clue including me.” She was also criticized for empathizing with the chimpanzees. Goodall feels that a lack of empathy is what leads to “unethical behavior” in modern science. “Moreover, why deny a perfectly respectable tool, she adds, I think those two are behaving like that because that’s how I would behave if I was in

that situation. That’s empathy. Once you work out why you think they’re doing, then you can start testing it.” Goodall feels that a healthy combination of both schools will lead modern science to

the most success. She finishes by saying, “I think empathy is really important. I think only when our clever brain and our human heart work together in harmony can we achieve our full potential.”

since then with his holy rank stripped from him until the Vatican’s promoter of justice took him in and incarcerated him on charges of sexual abuse. Allegedly, he walked lowincome areas of Santo Domingo where children would work for small amounts of cash. Disguised in track pants and a baseball cap, he searched for his victims and offered money in exchange for sexual favors. He appealed the previous charges but they were upheld in light of new, pending charges. This is the first time a prelate has been arrested inside the Vatican City-State. Considering Wesolowski was loved by the late Pope

Saint, this event is considered highly controversial and has received much media attention. “The initiative taken by the judicial departments of Vatican City State is a result of the express desire of the Pope,” a Vatican spokesperson stated. The fact that he is being held accountable by the Vatican shows that Pope Francis is taking the sins of pedophile priests quite seriously. Unfortunately, a bit of dissent has risen over this case. Some feel that, rather than express the severity, the Vatican is actually trying to protect the priest. The Survivor Network for those Abused by Priests (SNAP), who is happy that action was taken, says that it

didn’t come soon enough. By denying him justice in a court of either Poland or the Dominican Republic, his protective status in the Vatican while being tried in a Vatican court will likely soften the blow. Rather than face fifty or more years in a secular prison, he would likely only face seven when charged by the Vatican City-State. A trial date has not yet been announced. Whether or not details of the trial will be made public remains to be seen.

What Employers Want to See on Your Resume Siddhanta Bista Red&Black Staff

College students are constantly worrying about what future jobs they will get, particularly when they are thrown from the academic bubble they live in after graduation day and into the big adult world. They worry about what future employers will think of them and worry over their resumes; almost like worrying about how an outfit looks when going on a first date. According to a study performed by the Chronicle of Higher Education, employers are looking for internships on their future employees’ resumes. The second most important is employment during college. Surprisingly enough, the lowest two considerations on that list are one’s college’s rank and GPA. That’s right! Most employers do not care if your college or university made it to the Top 40 schools of 2014. They do care about students who go out and find an internship opportunity and stick to it. To be hired after college, you might have to go through a little-to-no pay internship which includes running around grabbing lattes and coffee for people who do not even know your name. They want you to slave away for 8 hours a day in

mind numbing boredom so they know you are capable of handling what their workplace is going to throw at you. Before students start to have a panic attack about their grades not counting, think about how internships are awarded. Internships are given to students with outstanding grades and a high GPA. Students, who sit around watching Netflix all day, are not handed internships when they do not deserve them. Internships require work and dedication. This means, in a roundabout way; future employers do care about your grade, major, class work and so on because you need those things in order to snag that internship you have been eyeing up all semester. Even though these employers are going to be concentrating on your internship, they are assuming you got it through good grades and hard work. To make your future employers happy, the best thing any student can do is continue their hard work and studying so they can be rewarded with an internships and a future stable job to brag about in Christmas cards. An internship will give you the practical experience you need to thrive in a fast-paced workplace. It will also show your future employers that you took the initiative to seek out learning opportunities.

Are You the One that They Want? Sarah Peterson Red&Black Contributor

As a student who is interested in becoming an engineer and going to graduate school for chemistry and physics, I was interested in reading an article about what employers are looking for when they are hiring people who have recently graduated from college. The answer given in the article was surprising to me. According to the article in The Atlantic, employers pay a lot attention to what internships, volunteering, extracurricular activities and jobs students perform. I would naturally believe that employers wanted to know about my grades and overall GPA in college. Who would want an engineer who

took Calculus One four times before passing it with a C as a grade? But the article is also quick to point out that internships can depend on your grades in college, so it is still important to study, not “blow off ” your classes and still expect a good job with high pay. The Atlantic also states, “Media and communications companies are gaga for internships and uniquely indifferent toward your classes. “Health care companies care the most about your major, and the white-collar businesses care the most about your GPA. “Ironically, education employers care the least about grades.” The article is also quick to point out that employers really do not look at the “elitism”

because the overall population of graduates from the top 20 Ivy League schools is so small in the overall pool of the applicants. Job applicants from colleges like Harvard or Yale make up a small amount of the graduate pool because they emit only 1,600 people per class whereas state college such as Penn State or Pitt emit over 15,000 people per graduation class. So before you moan and groan about applying for an internship, whether it is paid or not, think about your job resume and graduate school applications and a future high-paying job. Even though it might not be useful to you if you are not getting paid for your time, the internship might just help you get a better job than before.

Mission to Mars: ISRO Spacecraft Reaches Red Planet

Josh Dewaine Red&Black Contributor

On Tuesday Sept. 23, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced that their spacecraft known as Mangalyaan, which means “mars craft” in Sanskrit, had successfully entered orbit around the Martian planet. The ISRO was the first organization to successfully enter orbit of the Red Planet on their first attempt. The ISRO was the first Asian nation to reach the red planet and only the fourth entity behind the United States,

The Soviet Union and the European Space Agency. The ISRO kept the mission close to home with almost no outside influence on the project. The orbiter was designed with more than two-thirds of the resources coming from domestic companies such as Godrej & Boyce and Larsen & Toubro according to Reuters news. Overall, the orbiter was also the most cost efficient spacecraft to successfully achieve the mission as well, with a budget of only $74 million, $226 million less than the production cost of the movie Avatar, according to Wikipedia. The mission is mainly a demonstration of technology

for the ISRO. The hope is that, with a successful mission, more budget will open up to the space agency. The probe is designed to take photos of the Martian surface along with the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. The probe also has numerous instruments such as a photometer. This will allow scientists to study the loss of water from the surface of the planet. There is also a methane detector that will allow for mapping of the pockets of methane and a Thermal Imaging Spectrometer. This device will allow for the complex mapping of the

mineral deposits on the surface. The first photos were released by the ISRO on Sept. 25 showing the atmosphere of the planet along with a backdrop of the blackness of space. The second photo released was of the surface of the planet, showing numerous craters on the rocky surface. The ISRO reports that they expect to be receiving data from the orbiter for six to ten months. Mars now hosts five man made craft in orbit, NASA’s Mars Odyssey probe, MAVEN, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Europe’s Mars Express craft, and now Mangalyaan. There are also two

active rovers on the surface of the planet, NASA’s Opportunity and Curiosity, according to Space.com.

Brides Won’t Let This One Go Fall Fashion Forecast Emily Biting Red&Black Editor

Brides will no longer have to let dreams of looking like Elsa from “Frozen” go. “Frozen,” a heartwarming tale that centers on the royal sisters Anna and Elsa, was the 53rd installment in the Walt Disney Animated Classics. The film was praised by audiences and critics alike, earning over $1.2 billion in worldwide box office revenue and the place as the highestgrossing animated film of all time. The film raked in rewards as well as money, winning two Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and two Critic’s Choice Awards. Since the movie’s release in November 2013, Disney has released a wide variety of “Frozen” merchandise, including dolls, clothing, stuffed animals, wands, figurines, binders, phone cases, plates and mugs. The “Frozen” merchandise line will

soon be expanded to wedding gowns as well. On Sept. 17, 2014, Disney announced that the Alfred Angelo bridal label would be releasing an Elsa-themed gown on their Disneyweddings Instagram.

Courtesy hero.wikia.com

The picture is a sketch of the gown with the caption, “The rumors are true- meet “Elsa”, our Frozen-inspired wedding gown with @ AlfredAngeloBridal!” An Anna-themed gown is also rumored to be in the works for the company. The Elsa gown was created by

Michele Piccione, the Chief Creative Officer of Alfred Angelo, in part with Disney Consumer Products. “A character like Elsa is a huge inspiration for any designer. She is beautiful and elegant, and her inner beauty shines through when she is ultimately not afraid to embrace who she is with confidence and poise,” Piccione told InStyle. The dress was inspired by the “Let It Go” scene in the movie when Elsa finally embraces her cryokinetic powers, changing her normal royal garb into an icy gown that she then wears for the rest of the film. InStyle described Piccione’s real-life version of the dress as “an ice blue softly-flared sheath gown with a sweetheart neckline made with layers of satin, tulle, glitter net and organza,” complete with “allover beading in swirling patterns” and “a Watteau train.” The dress will be available for purchase at Alfred Angelo stores in January 2015 and will come in both ice blue and ivory, reindeer and snowmen sold separately.

After New York Fashion Week, all people talk about is what is going to be in-style for our generation this fall. There are quite a few different and new trends coming out whereas things such as legwarmers are making a huge comeback. One of the big looks this season, is the black western look. This basically includes western-inspired boots, hats, lace-up denim, duster jackets, fringed capes and harnesses. It makes the casual western look seem edgy and give it that kind of mood. Another look is all about the LEGS. Girl, show off those legs with mini-skirts, minidresses or even short shorts! Pair these minis with over the knee boots, socks or with a large slouchy cardigan to make the outfit perfect. Metal embellishment is also a great hit. Whether it’s something small like on a moto-jacket or a sheer dress covered in it, it is sure to make you look awesome. Even adding metal jewelry is another great idea. It gives

you this rock’n’roll vibe but all the while keeping it very casual. However, it seems a lot of fashionable clothing this season is kind of manly. Rugged and ripped denim is always in, but now it’s more. Tailored trousers, blazers and over-sized, slouchy jackets and coats are just a few of the examples. While a lot of this is very modern, there is vintage look from the 90’s coming back. This is the slip-dress and it looks great paired with a large shirt, jacket or coat. Don’t forget to add a choker to make the outfit complete. One of the last trends is the faux fur. They tried to bring this back last year, but it is for sure a hit this season. Whether it’s a short crop jacket, a long duster or even a sweater with fur, it is sure to not only make you warm but also make the outfit even greater. A few other great things for the season are long sweaters/ cardigans, kimonos, leather, scarves and shorts with leggings underneath. Adding any of these trends to your closet will surely make you look fantastic this season!

Destiny: Best Game Since Halo Jake Humes Red&Black Contributor

Destiny, Bungie’s latest release since Halo: Reach, was released Sept. 9 for the Xbox One and Playstation 4, as well as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Bungie, who has been working on the product since 2009 at the earliest, hinted at in the game Halo: ODST. The hype for the upcoming game grew when Bungie sold rights for the Halo franchise to Microsoft and dedicated itself to the Destiny project. It opens with a group of near-present-day astronauts on the Martian surface. After scaling a cliff, they see a large hovering object in the distance: a being known as the Traveler. It’s existence brought about a new golden age for humanity, propelling their influence across the stars. However, a force called the Darkness, which has hunted the Traveler since the dawn of time (as far as we know), started the Collapse, signaling the end of humanity’s new-found glory. Humanity was wiped out save for one city, Tower, sanctified by the now-weakened Traveler. Anywhere

outside is fraught with danger and certain death to all but the strongest. The game cuts to Old Russia, where the player is awakened by a Ghost (voiced by Game of Throne’s Peter Dinklage), a hovering mechanical AI sent directly from the Traveler. The player is a Guardian, destined to save humanity from Darkness and has been revived from death to carry out this purpose. Destiny is an RPG (Role Playing Game) shooter, which is becoming very popular as of late. Fans of the Borderlands series will find very similar elements. There are many options for customizing the character, including three races and classes. The Titan is a defensive front-line juggernaut, while the Hunter is a sneaky duelist reminiscent of a classic bounty hunter. There is also the Warlock, which focuses on spell casting via powers granted to him/her from the Traveler. Control-wise, Halo fans will find the game smooth and easy to pick up; the control are essentially the exact same. From here the player takes on missions,

accompanied by their Ghost AI, on various places across the cosmos, from Earth to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Players grow stronger as they level up and gain access to wider degrees of customization, such as new and augmented abilities, plus the traditional acquisition of new weapons and armor. The game’s setting and music have all been heavily praised. Also praised is its competitive multiplayer, which is recognized as having well thought out maps like its Halo predecessors. Unfortunately, it has also been criticized for its lack of storytelling, being relatively open-ended and not really separating itself well from other competitors, like the Borderlands series, which accompanies decent storytelling with a brand of humor that is unforgettable.

Batman Begins... The Beginning Julia Price Red&Black Contributor

For any DC comic fans out there, if you love Batman and his villainous foes, surely you are familiar with the crime-plagued Gotham City. This series chronicles the origin story of Gotham City before Bruce Wayne dawns his cape and cowl, an origin of villains and vigilantes, and how they get their start. It all starts when a young Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents one fateful night in a dark alley. However, while the series does feature a young version of the future Dark Knight, this is no Batman story. The official synopsis released by FOX confirms this, the show plans to cover the “circumstances” that lead to the creation of Catwoman, The Joker, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Penguin. The series turns its attention to rookie detective Gordon who is set to

purge Gotham of its corruption and crime and to restore it to the pure version he remembered as a child. Gordon is partnered with Gotham’s rough police legend Harvey Bullock and is assigned to investigate the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. It is there that he first meets the survivor: Bruce Wayne. The series is intended to follow Gordon’s rise from rookie

detective to the commissioner that Batman fans are familiar with, along with the unlikely friendship that forms between Gordon and Wayne. While Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin) have already been casted for season one, it is likely that fans will have to wait a while to get a glimpse at other Batman villains such as gang boss Fish Mooney and Oswald, who are taking center stage. So whether you’re a hardcore Batman fanatic, a casual comic fan or someone who is hoping to get more of the caped crusader before Batman vs. Superman releases, this series is an excellent addition or start. Gotham has been summarized as a chronicle of the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.Watch Gordon try to clean up a corrupted city, citizens of the city go from minor thieves to super villains and the development of a scared child to Batman as he seeks to avenge the loss of his parents.

Bro-Country: Why Country Music Has Changed Nathaniel Kanuch Red&Black Staff

The past two or so years in country music have seen an incredible change in the genre. Since the release of Florida-Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” country radio has been dominated by the sound of “bro-country.” “Cruise,” a mindless and badly written song, could have been a flop. Maybe that would have killed bro-country before it even took off. “Cruise,” however, became one of the best-selling singles of all-time, in any genre and bro-country was born. Jody Rosen, a culture writer and journalist for New York Magazine, coined the term in a derisive way. Rosen wrote, “In short, ‘Cruise’ is bro-country: music by and of the tatted, gym-toned, party-hearty young American White dude.” Artists like Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan cashed in and became stars by copying the format of “Cruise.” Bryan’s “That’s My Kinda Night” is probably the worst offender, mentioning everything bro-country is about in three minutes including a weekend, a river bank, a jacked-up truck and the “good stuff.” According to bro-country artists, it is always a summer Friday or Saturday night, and all a girl really wants is a little bit of alcohol to make her happy. Guys

don’t screw up or have their hearts broken, and all life revolves around is drinking on the tailgate of truck. Thankfully, it seems country music is moving on (despite what Tyler Farr or Chase Rice may say) from this insulting view of life. Artists are maturing and realizing life is not always filled with sunshine and happiness. Country music has always been a refuge for those who break their backs day in and day out, for those who screwed up and need someone to relate to, and for those who just need a friendly word of advice when things turn bad. Jake Owen, known for his beach songs, recently released a single called “What We Ain’t Got,” filled with regret and sorrow. Kenny Chesney has acknowledged the objectification of woman on country radio recently and pointed out that life is not always easy. Florida-Georgia Line has even released a poignant single, “Dirt,” dealing with a man’s connection to the ground he grew up on. With both Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood coming out of retirement, country radio can definitely be expected to be filled with a lot more meaning in the coming months. Country music has room for both partying and reflection. Like life, however, there needs to be a balance of both in Nashville. It seems most artists are starting to remember what country music is really about. And that is certainly for the better of anyone who loves or is connected to country music.

“This Is All Yours” Debut Album from Alt-J Nathaniel Kanuch Red&Black Staff

On Sept. 22, Indie Rock band Alt-J released their long awaited second studio album entitled This Is All Yours. Taking on somewhat of a different sound, Alt-J slows down the pace but includes some new songs that are more rock rather than psychedelic. After having success with their first album An Awesome Wave, which was released in 2012, Alt-J continued to form their own sound. Similar to their original album, This Is All Yours, begins with an “Into” which, in this case, incorporates lyrics from Wu-Tang’s song “Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off),” thus making it the only explicit song on the album. “Arrival In Nara,” the second song on the album has a slow instrumental portion in the beginning which encompasses the majority of the song. Following, “Nara” continues the mellow interlude and picks up the pace towards the end of the song in anticipation of the next song. Previously

released as a single “Every Other Freckle” is similar to Alt-J’s original album with its beginning vocal solo and hook reminiscent of “Taro” or “Fitzpleasure.” Along with “Every Other Freckle,” “Left Hand Free” was released as a single, having more of a rock sound; Alt-J still sticks to their sound by combining a horn section and using synthesizers for a more “funkadelic” sound. Having a more folklore sound “Garden of England -- Interlude” incorporates the use of many wind instruments and is different from the other songs on the album. Slowing down once again, “Choice Kingdom” is one of the most haunting songs on the album, and with the use of bells creates a feeling of uncertainty. The next song, “Hunger of the Pine,” samples Miley Cyrus’s song “4x4” from her album Bangerz. “Warm Foothills” is one the most instrumental songs on the album, and shows the vocal range of lead singer Joe Newman. Inspired by the film “Alien,” “The Gospel of John Hurt” is a song dedicated to John Hurt’s most famous scene in the film where an alien comes out of his chest; this song

Courtesy codcourier.org

is similar to “Matilda” from “An Awesome Wave” by basing the lyrics off a movie. “Pusher” is more of a ballad and includes more of an acoustic sound and many harmonies between Newman and Gus Unger-Hamilton. Continuing from “Bloodflood” on the first album “Bloodflood pt. II” picks up from where the original left off and samples lyrics from “Fitzpleasure.” Taking on a more techno sound “Leaving Nara” is similar to the sound we expect from Alt-J. The last song on the album is a bonus track entitled “Lovely Day” which is reminiscent of the folklore sounds from “Garden of England -Interlude” with a strong emphasis on the vocals. The album is a newer sound for Alt-J but still includes the elements we love from “An Awesome Wave.” Fans of Alt-J should not be disappointed with the new album.

Maze Runner Catches Huge Success Among Young People Sarah Peterson Red&Black Contributor

From The Hunger Games to the Fault in Our Stars, movies based off of young adult books have been found everywhere. Some of these movies have been hits, like the Hunger Games and Harry Potter, while others such as the Host and the Giver have been flops. Some movies such as the Vampire Academy are so unlike the book that the fans will not even go to see the movie because the filmmakers did not stay true to the book. The latest movie to stem from the young adult book called the Maze Runner has been a box office hit, and sometime next year will have a sequel, Maze Runner: Score Trials. The movie stars Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf- MTV) as Thomas. Google.com states that the movie is about “When Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world, only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape.” So somewhat like Hunger Games in terms of suspense. The movie is based off of the books by James Dashner and is the first book in a trilogy. And the movie

Courtesy showbiz411.com

comes from Fox studio, the same as The Fault in Our Stars. The success of the movie comes from the way a wide range of audience members are able to relate to it. Young or old everyone can can see parts of themselves in the movie. MSN entertainment states that 64% of opening weekend attendees were in the 25 to 35 year range. It brought in 32.5 million dollars, while every other movie brought in not even half that. So if you are in the mood for another adventure thriller or just want to go see another movie and avoid doing homework, the Maze Runner might be for you. If you like the books and are interested in the movie, it is now in theaters. So grab your friends and make a movie night to go see the Maze Runner in a movie theater near you.

The Most Memorable Songs from Our Childhoods Delta Omicron

Everyone knows that there are generational groups when it comes to music. Genre, appearance and fans are constantly changing, or at least the ones being focused on by the media are. But we don’t have to look to the media and its ever-watchful cultural lens to see this. It’s something we’ve all experienced close to home. Our parents know a completely different set of artists than we do, mostly from the era in which they grew up. Sure, some older folks keep up with more modern artists, maybe even the ones in this list, but no matter who is hot and who is not, everyone who is currently in college should remember these songs. The first is called “All The Small Things” by Blink-182. It was release in January of 2000 and made it onto the top song charts in at least a dozen different countries. The music video for the song amplified its popularity as the band parodied other groups

such as the Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync. Speaking of the Backstreet Boys, their song “As Long As You Love Me” is second on this list. Before your mind goes to the Justin Bieber song of the same name, know that this one was released in the fall of 1997. It is about a man who loves a woman and can put aside the past as long as she loves him back. Nothing is better than a sappy, forgiving love story, right? Except for perhaps Britney Spears. Her song “Baby One More Time” has the additional words “hit me” in the lyrics. But the song (released in 1998) was never about abusive love or S&M. In fact, the meanings in many of her songs really don’t matter as much to everyone as the fact that she was in a revealing Catholic schoolgirl outfit for this music video. That alone is enough reason for all of us to remember Spears and her songs (that, and her weird skin tight red jumpsuit-type outfit from “Oops!...I Did It Again”). “Bye, Bye, Bye” by ‘N Sync was released in January of 2000 as the group separated from their manager and record label. The lyrics could have been referring to that experience in some way, but mostly the catchy

tune just illustrated a romantic relationship coming to an end. In any case, this was another chart topping song. Lastly, “My Heart Will Go On.” I don’t believe I know a single person at least twenty years old that has never heard this song. Celine Dion released it in December of 1997 and it flourished from all the attention. It topped charts at number one all over the world and became the best-selling single of 1998 for the entire world. That’s crazy! The song continues to be remembered today in the film Titanic, which is seen by viewers of all ages (especially as a television re-run) and also serves as a go-to karaoke song for many people. So what have we learned? Well, so far all of the songs that are memorable have been about relationships or love (in one way or another), but our hearts will go on as we find songs to reflect our other life experiences as well. Look for the next installment of this to find out about some more memorable tunes from the past as I’m going to be crossing all kinds of lines and delving deep into the gigantic world of genres and themes expressed through music.

New York’s Egalitarian Clown Posse Takes on College Admissions Thomas Marcotte Red&Black Editor

New York and California are beyond help. These two states, two of the most well-known and loved cultural capitals, have taken egalitarianism and run with it to truly absurd degrees, in the face of every possible warning to stop. Now, New York has set its sights on college admissions. Apparently, colleges in the Empire State aren’t letting in enough criminals to suit Those Who Know Better, and there are currently laws in the works to solve this. Both houses of each state’s legislature have bills that would change the entire edu-

cational system, which was somehow horrendously bigoted in a way that has just now been discovered. These new laws would force colleges to discount the criminal convictions of applicants until their academic merits are assessed. The New York Times, in a move that everyone and their mother expected, has come out in favor of the change, saying that over 70 million Americans have criminal records, and “since criminal records are often inaccurate and misleading, these screening systems are inherently unfair.” It also adds that since most of these convictions are just youthful indiscretions, like underage drinking or traffic violations, applicants are being unfairly penalized for offenses that posed no threat to anyone’s safety. Now is should

be apparent that nobody thinks that minor mistakes, like getting caught drinking or running a stop sign, should ruin someone’s chances of going to college. But there’s no need for colleges to throw the baby out with the bath water and discount criminal records entirely. Unless, of course, you’re a pious egalitarian determined to eradicate bigoted, probably-racist notions of “criteria” and “standards” from higher learning. After all, doesn’t everyone deserve a college education? No. A college campus is a community dedicated to learning, and every community deserves to be able to decide for itself who is allowed in and who is not. Checking criminal convictions is an important part of

that process. Not just for its own sake, but because criminality is an important marker for other things—time preference, aggression levels and respect for others—that are very important for determining how well someone will fit into that community. Colleges should be able to give an applicant’s criminal record however much importance they think is appropriate without deferring to the government to make that choice for them. If these really are just typical youthful mistakes, colleges will likely not pay too much attention anyway; law or no. But if a college does feel that an applicant’s crimes make them a poor fit, they should be allowed to act on that. That’s the most basic level of freedom of association. Now it may be that the bill’s

supporters are just especially tone-deaf New York leftists on the fringe of modern liberalism. But that’s the thing—the “fringe” of liberalism only remains that way for so many years, before it becomes the next big social issue we didn’t know we needed. Then the editorials come, then the court cases and within 20 years not even the conservatives will contest the issue for fear of being called heartless monsters. We’ve seen this before, and we’ll see it long after bills like this get passed in every state once more and more state governments jump on this bandwagon to signal what doubleplus goodthinkers they are. Hopefully this bill will die in committee, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Are Hidden Traffic Cameras for Safety or Money? Sarah Peterson Red&Black Contributor

As a motorist, you know to be cautious with the speed limit. You do not want to get a speeding ticket and get pulled over by the police. This can be embarrassing, especially if you have to call your parents over why the insurance card isn’t in the car and ask them to locate it. You

know the police will pull you over if you get caught speeding. Drivers often learn where the police like to sit and watch for speeders commonly referred to as “speed traps” with the intension of catching speeding drivers. But in some areas, such as Washington D.C., motorists are being caught speeding with hidden cameras and being notified of their speeding via the fine in the mail. Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker had a

$200 fine for speeding by one of these hidden cameras. She brought up a question regarding the hidden cameras to catch speeders that could anger some people. “Are the cameras designed to increase public safety, or are they just a means to trap citizens in order to make money?” said Parker. Her evidence claims that Wash. D.C. is more concerned about raising money rather than concerned with public safety. Parker quotes the inspector general of Wash. D.C.,

who said, “One of the beauties of parking, it’s like the IRS. If you get a ticket, you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent… And that’s worked well for us.” Parker also states that in 2013 camera-issued speeding tickets amounted to 666,275 and raised $82.5 mill dollars across the entire country. In Ohio, courts are fighting the idea of hidden camera speeding tickets on the bases of a person’s constitutional right regarding due process. I think that hidden cameras for

motorists are a bad idea and it is another way that the United States government can check up on people. For me, it is all about the money and not a safety catch since everyone who speeds will get a ticket. The tickets could stem from the range from one mile to twenty miles over the limit. As a driver, you literally have to watch out for everything from people and animals to hidden cameras and police. Good Luck.

Is Climate Change Really the Most Pressing Issue of Today?

Courtesy abc.net.au

President Obama addresses the Climate Summit at the United Nations Headquarters and refers to climate change as “the most important issue of the 21st century.”

Timothy Hite Red&Black Contributor With easier access to media and social networking in today’s society, we are more exposed to politics on a day to day basis than ever before. With this exposure, it is hard to find someone who has not heard about climate change, or global warming, as it is sometimes referred to. This issue has become more mainstream, especially within the last year, since President Obama has added it to his agenda of things to do. Last week at the U.N. Climate

Summit, President Obama reiterated that climate change would “be the biggest threat facing the world in the future.” To curb the danger of climate change, President Obama has taken action in cutting down carbon emissions. Along with the Environmental Protection Agency, the president has been adamant on redefining emission standards so that carbon emissions would be cut down by 30 percent by 2030. President Obama also encouraged poorer nations to

aid in the fight against climate change as well. Under his plan, these underdeveloped countries will be given access to improved weather risk assessments as well as new global elevation data. A strong action by the commander and chief, unquestionably. The only issue I have with the announcement made by our president is the timing and the circumstances surrounding his statements at the U.N. Climate Summit. It’s not that climate change is a lesser problem that is

unworthy of the president’s time, rather, the escalating fight in the Middle East should have the undivided attention of our president. I’m indifferent when it comes to intervention in the Middle East, but if we, as a country, are committed to taking on the cancer that is ISIL, we must not let our attention distract us from the task at hand. President Obama may have plenty of issues to concern himself with, but airstrikes and military intervention should be at the top of his list. When a president orders

airstrikes of the magnitude that President Obama has, his statements the next day should not be condemning climate change as the biggest threat to society. Addressing climate change occurs over time with the passage of legislation. ISIL is currently an immediate threat to many people in this world. The United States must take care of the immediate dangers in the Middle East, or at least minimize their presence, before we publicly focus our attention on other issues at hand.

Hold Your Reindeer: Winter Holiday Ads Starting Too Soon Sara Gaskill Red&Black Contributor

Oh the Holidays! Most people get way too excited for them. I understand the splendid hype; like stuffing our faces full of food, receiving gifts and enjoying one another’s company. What I don’t get is why stores get over-excited about them! For instance, we are already in September and Halloween is being pushed on us to the fullest. I must admit, I do love Halloween and pumpkin flavored things, but it gets old way too fast. Everywhere you look, its pumpkin here and pumpkin there and pumpkin everywhere. I’m sick of it! Halloween isn’t just about pumpkin flavored things. Historically, it was meant to keep the evil spirits away. When I walk into a Halloween store, why is there a pretty princess costume? What’s that going to scare? These Halloween stores need to get with it. Traditionally, Thanksgiving uses pumpkins, too. That basically means two whole months of us consuming pumpkin. Somebody please save us! Unless you’re a Halloween baby, you’re pretty much programed to eating pumpkin flavored things all day, every day. Right after Halloween is over, Christmas bells are a ringing. I

work in a mall where I’m from and, the day after Halloween is over, Christmas music starts

"People get sick of it and I know I’m not the only one. The reason holidays’ come about is so that we can celebrate them when the time comes; that’s what makes them so special. Today, commercialization in this day and age is outrageous! Holidays are now celebrated two months in advance and are expected to still be exciting when their day actually arives. I wish, in some way, that we could go back in time and fix this mess because I know I’d enjoy holidays a lot more if they would be celebrated when the time's right." to play. Avoid the malls and stores at all cost until you’re ready to look for present ideas or food to make. We forget about Thanksgiving; although, the only

thing it’s good for is the food, and no one really cares about the true significance behind it. Literally, listening to Christmas music at work and in the car just kills Christmas for me. You feel like being Jack from the “Nightmare before Christmas” and ruining everything “Christmas-sy” for other people. You can buy anything for Christmas, people, so why force it upon yourself and everyone else so early? Also, you can buy Christmas trees so far in advance that, by the time it’s Christmas day, the trees’ are already dead. I literally feel like Scrooge by this point. In short, stores are way over their heads for pushing holidays products way in advance. People get sick of it, and I know I’m not the only one. The reason holidays come about is so that we can celebrate them when the time comes; that’s what makes them so special. Today, commercialization in this day and age is outrageous! Holidays are now celebrated two months in advance and are expected to still be exciting when their day actually arrives. I wish, in some way, that we could go back in time and fix this mess because I know I’d enjoy holidays a lot more if they would be celebrated when the times’ right, or, at least, during the month they occur.

When you advertise for holidays early, you end up with terrible ads like this (above). Instead, you should celebrate holidays when they are in the proper season, like carving pumpkins or going to a haunted house.

Quiz Corner: Freshman Term Paper or James Joyce? Kyle Sossi Red&Black Editor Welcome to this first-ever edition of the Superburger Quiz Corner! Today we’ll be playing “James Joyce or Freshman Term Paper?” The game works exactly how it sounds, where you have to decide whether the following quotes come from James Joyce, the early 20th- century stream-ofconsciousness poet and novelist, or a W&J freshman writing a term paper at the last minute. Think this will be easy? Well, you might be surprised. The answers are in the bottom right corner of the page. Good luck, everyone! And remember: like everything in the Superburger, all of the quotes in this article are completely real.

Round 1: A) “A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun” B) “Two summers, the summer before last, my father who is father took me fishing by a river.” Round 2: A) “While the argument supports the theory, it does not. However…” B) “Let us leave theories there and return to here's hear.” Round 3: A) “Interpretations of interpretations interpreted.” B) “What can we interpret from critics’ interpretations of other critic’s interpretation?” Round 4: A) “Thus the unfacts, did we possess them, are too imprecisely few to warrant our certitude...” B) “Can readers guarantee the truth of authors or? Not knowing intent means we can’t find truth, always.” BONUS ROUND! In this round we are switching up the game. Instead of a quote from a college freshman’s paper, we are instead looking for quotes from discussions on the second day of class: A) “Have read little and understood less.” B) “bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk!”

A Friendly Note From the Superburger Editor Thomas Marcotte Red&Black Editor We here at the Superburger like to have fun. But sometimes we have to address more serious topics. The Superburger seems to be causing some of our readers no small amount of distress. I am of course referring to the response some of our readers took to our story two weeks ago, retelling the chilling tale of a serial killer wandering into the basement of Whitworth Hall and being scared stiff by its darkness, tunnels to

nowhere, and its general overall creepiness. Upon reading the story, several people contacted us in a fright, demanding to know whether the story was real. I can’t even tell you how disappointed I am in myself. I have failed in my responsibilities as an editor. My job was to make sure that we were all on the same page here, and that we all knew going in that this section was not meant to be taken seriously. This my own fault. I should have done more to make it

clear. I should have picked the most ridiculous topics possible to write about, things that couldn’t possibly have been real. I should have filled these article with as many silly jokes as possible. I should have written “It’s just a joke” in big letters on the top of the page. Oh, wait. My point is, if you thought the Superburger was meant to give you serious news, the joke was on you. Don’t worry, it’s all in good fun. Although I would suggest you go see a trustworthy optometrist soon.

Round 1: A) James Joyce; B) Travis Roy’s freshman Composition paper about a fond summer memory. Round 2: A) Susan Wilson’s first term Biology paper; B) James Joyce. Round 3: A) James Joyce; B) Bill Reynolds’ English-190 paper, which he finished about twenty minutes before class. Round 4: This one was tricky. The Freshman paper was on the intentions of F. Scott Fitzgerald in “The Great Gatsby,” but which one is this freshman and which is Joyce? A) James Joyce; B) Tim Jenkins, English major for all of two weeks. Bonus Round: Now this was a hard one, wasn’t it? They seem like they could go either way. It’s close. Too close to tell the difference, really. Unfortunately for your score-card, both quotes are from James Joyce. Thanks for playing! If you didn’t get any questions right or, even worse, one of these quotes comes from a paper of yours, don’t fear. Take solace in one final quote from James Joyce: “Writing in English is the most ingenious torture ever devised for sins committed in previous lives.”

Spotlight: Brian Lindquist College Health: Avoiding the "Freshman 15" Lauren Markish Red&Black Contributor Brian Lindquist, a freshman basketball player for Washington & Jefferson College, is anxiously anticipating the start of his first season of college basketball. In second grade, Lindquist discovered a love for basketball after participating in Rip Hamilton’s basketball camp. He played through high school, and, during his junior year, colleges began to show interest in him. W&J was one of those schools and Lindquist claims they were one of the most persistent. “The coaches here at W&J were a large factor in the decision,” said Lindquist. “I feel pretty good about coming here, and they were genuinely excited when I committed to [the college].” His experience with the team so far has been positive and he plans to play all four years at W&J. Being a freshman, Lindquist doesn’t expect to get too much playing time, but is still hopeful that he will occasionally get some time on the court. One of the worries that many freshmen athletes have is how they are going to balance academics with schoolwork. Even though the basketball team already has a busy schedule, Lindquist says the transition from playing in high school to playing college

ball hasn't been as difficult as he expected when he first came here. The team has open gyms two times a week and they have conditioning three times a week. As a freshman, Lindquist is required to go to study halls. These are beneficial to him since they set aside time just for schoolwork. Lindquist says, “It [the study hall] helps me finish all the stuff I need to get done.” He hopes that this balance won’t be much more difficult once the season actually starts. The team’s first official practice is Oct. 15 and the PAC basketball season begins on Nov. 15 at Franklin and Marshall. Coincidentally, Franklin and Marshall is located near Lindquist’s hometown. Lindquist is very excited for the season to begin and he hopes to see lots of fans at the home opener on Nov. 29, when W&J men’s basketball takes on Muskingum University at 3:00 p.m. in Henry Gymnasium.

Siddhanta Bista Red&Black Contributor Everyone is pretty familiar with the term “freshman 15.” It is when many college students pack on 15 pounds during their first year of college. College offers many temptations. With so many food options, students are on their own and free to eat what they want. You could pile on the portions of food in the dining hall, eat chicken tenders all day with fries, eat tons of ice cream or snack long into the night to fuel late-night studying. In addition, you may not exercise as much as you did in high school. This is especially true if you are spending long nights awake studying. College also offers a time change with the stress acclimating to school, which can trigger

overeating in people already predisposed to eating too much. Furthermore, many people sometimes eat in response to anxiety, homesickness, long distance relationships, stress or even sadness. So what are some ways to stay fit on campus and ensuring that the freshman 15 does not hit? Here is a list of eight sports, habits, and activities that could help: 1) As tempting as the elevators are, avoid using them by taking the stairs instead. Just a little extra activity every day can make a difference. 2) Join a fun sport--the school has plenty of varsity teams and, if you don’t have much time or aren’t a serious player, you can join an intermural sport. 3) Hit the gym. accessible -make use of this opportunity. 4) Be active with friendsgo for walks, runs or bike rides to stay active. 5) Take a fitness class or take a gym class for credit-. Elective classes such as swimming are a great way to remain active while also earning credit as part of a P.E. course. 6) Sign up for an adventure trip - get in touch with the Outdoor Club for some fun trips. Hiking is an excellent way to excercise. 7) Work a healthy diet into your lifestyle. At W&J, eating at G&T’s is quite common for students. However, ensure that you are eating a balanced diet. 8) Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day. Water keeps you hydrated and promotes optimal metabolic activity. It also helps counteract a lot of the extra sodium in junk food,

Presidents’ Football Clocks in 700th Victory

W&J’s victory over CMU is a historic moment in the college’s history; only 24 other college teams have ever reached 700 total wins.

Lauryn Halahurich Red&Black Editor On September 20, 2014, the Washington & Jefferson football team defeated long time rival, Carnegie Mellon University, 48-30 to become only the third NCAA Division III football program and only 25th program in the history of the NCAA to reach 700 wins. “This win was huge for our team and program. It shows that this program is top of the line,” said wide receiver Jess Zubik ’18. W&J has now joined the ranks of well-known football colleges, as given by NCAA’s Statitude website, with Notre

Dame ranked second on the list with 878 wins, Harvard in ninth with 839, LSU in 15th with 756, and Penn State 16th with 734, along with a great many others. And only two other Division III schools, Wittenberg with 727 and Mount Union with 729. The Presidents won this game under the leadership of their head coach, Mike Sirianni, who is currently in his 12th season with the college with a 103-24 record at W&J. For quarterback, Pete Coughlin ’17 “[the game] didn’t really feel any different from a normal game until

after we won then the idea of winning the 700th game in the program really set in and it was a really cool thing to be apart of.” The game began with the Presidents gaining 15-yard play which lead to a 75-yard that ended with a touchdown pass between Pete Coughlin to Max Creighan ’15. Another touchdown soon followed thanks to a 17-yard run by Ryan Ruffing ’16, followed by another Coughlin to Greighan connection for a 70yard touchdown. The Tartans retaliated with a drive at the end of the quarter to make the score 14-7.

Early in the second quarter, Coughlin threw a third touchdown to Jesse Zubik. CMU brought the score to 21-14 due to a 39-yard touchdown, but a six-yard pass to Greighan gave the Presidents back their 14 point lead. In the third quarter, CMU pulled off a second drive, which lead to a fumble that was picked up by Justin Bauer ’16 and gave Ruffing an opportunity a few plays later to reach the end zone on a 32yard run. Ruffing also added another touchdown later in the quarter to make the score 42-14. The beginning of the fourth

quarter led to the Tartans scoring and then recovering an onside kick which didn’t end in any points, but lead to W&J getting the ball on the 38-yard line. The game ended with Coughlin connecting with Daniel Lis ’16, but Blake Davis’s extra point kick was blocked and returned by CMU for two points, with CMU later scoring with just nine minutes left, driving the final score up to 48-30. But that was still not enough to stop the Presidents’ drive to their groudbreaking 700th victory. Whichi-Coax!
