contemporary art world. Typically large meandering canvases tell of complex, yet fundamental, stories of ownership and land rights fused with whimsical stories of creation handed from generation to generation.R E D O T F I N E A R T G A L L E R Y in collaboration with Elisabeth Hutchinson The Spinifex artists continue to paint traditional stories and document kinship responsibilities and these works have become widely knownpresents in the fine art world as some of the most important modern contemporary Indigenous art pieces being produced today. This growing reputation is also gaining international acclaim and the works are now housed within major art and museum collections both in Australia and overseas, with recent acquisitions by the British Museum making headlines and a major show in Germany in 2013. This exhibition showcasing works by old master such as Fred Grant, Ned Grant, Roy Underwood, Estelle Hogan, Tjaruwa Woods and Lawrence Pennington, to mention but a few, opens on Wednesday, 14th May and runs till Saturday, 21st June 2014 and it is a must-see for Solo Oil Pastels anyone interested in following the Exhibition development ofof modern contemporary Indigenous art, from one of the Aboriginal art movements most remote, refreshing and innovative art centres.

Rajnish Kaur, Solo Exhibition of Oil Pastels Born in Delhi 1967, Rajnish Kaur is one of the new generation of India’s finest contemporary artists. She received her BA and MA at Delhi College of Art and was awarded the Charles Wallace Scholarship to London’s Chelsea College of Art (Postgraduate). After lecturing at Delhi College of Art (1994-1997) she decided to concentrate solely on her work. Her art has been exhibited internationally with 30 shows in India, London, New York, Switzerland and 8 solo shows in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Singapore. Her work is dually inspired by the colour palette and decorative imagery of 18th century Indian miniature painting which she studied and the vitality of her immediate environment. The hustle and bustle of the vibrant market feel from her front door with its dogs and cows moving here and there, rickshaws competing for space with luxury cars, fruit and vegetable stalls and wedding shops selling garlands and beads. She brings these elements to life in her abstract works, which burst with colour and intriguing detail. In her own words Rajnish states her intention to ‘make the work live – it should talk to me and there are moments of silence as well. And in the process of making interesting things surface, other images are buried…the happiness of birth and the sadness of death, just as in life itself.’ Her work is an evocation of experience and has an undeniably powerful draw. Brimming with feelings, memories and desires it is an homage to the exuberance of life and intensity of existence. Within the textured and generously applied layers you may recognise a moment of life: a perfect summer’s day, the embers of a dream, the smell of rain, the bustle of urban life or the wonder of childhood. The result is stunning art bursting with colour which is quite simply, beautiful. Over the past two years Rajnish has focused on using oil pastel on paper and we are very proud to present this major exhibition of over 50 of these latest works.

A Collector’s View In his 1991 movie “Until the End of the World”, Wim Wenders tells the story of a brilliant scientist, who wishes his blind wife to see. To achieve this he invents a device which when worn by a sighted person, records the biochemical event of seeing. The device is then worn by the blind person, and transmits the images into their brain. Through the genius of the scientist, the blind are able to see for the first time. RK’s artworks represent a means by which her exuberantly joyous and infinitely colourful view of the world can be transmitted into our own monochromatic consciousness. A few moments drinking in one of RK’s works and you’re not in Kansas anymore… Despite the abstract nature of the work, one may see a fleeting glimpse of a bird here or a cat there. Perhaps one might suddenly recall the long forgotten childhood memory of an afternoon’s cloud spotting on a carefree summer’s day with friends. Synapses fire, eyes dart greedily from point to point, and one is gradually forced to give in to an irresistible sense of emotional rejuvenation. The works are an antidote to the troubles of this careworn life we increasingly lead; they also possess an incredible ability to redefine themselves moment by moment. Over time one will revisit many familiar themes and emotions, but one is constantly surprised by the work’s capricious ability to challenge one’s established ideas. These are doubtless works of great artifice and erudition, with a style perfected over many years by their creator. Their magical ability to awaken a sense of innocent delight in the observer only serves to amplify, rather than undermine their artistic importance. Art doesn’t need to be difficult to comprehend to be worthy of our attention. It’s a great joy to be confronted by work that makes one feel so fundamentally happy, yet hopelessly unable to articulate why. Like a latter day Charlie Bucket, I shall be standing outside RK’s new show, clutching my Golden Ticket in a quivering hand, anticipating the wonders that wait behind those closed doors. But I have a wonderful advantage over Charlie; Unlike Willie Wonka, Rajnish really exists
