Our Island, Our Sea – an ocean away
The ReDot Fine Art Gallery is extremely honoured to be hosting the first ever international show by the community art centre known as Erub Arts, which has become famous for their production of Ghost Net sculptures and artefacts made from debris collected from the oceans around Darnley Island. Erub rises sharply from the au karem (deep sea) in the eastern Torres Strait, and their daily life is governed by the rhythms of the ocean and the seasons. As one of Australia’s most remote art centres, located in the outer eastern islands of the Torres Strait, Erub Art’s success is based on the cultural integrity and collaborative practice, which is deeply rooted in cultural traditions/stories and performance. This ongoing theme of the ocean has led to much of the art centres current work reflecting the fragility of life and connection to this ocean, using the derelict drifting
fishing net known as “Ghost Net” as the perfect and primary medium to tell this story and create their art. Erub Arts started making Ghost Net artworks in 2010 with an initial workshop by Sue Ryan from Ghost Net Australia and then subsequently under the artistic direction of Lynnette Griffiths it has blossomed, going on to make more ambitious large scale sculptures and installations and their success has been nothing short of meteoric. ‘Our Island, Our Sea – an ocean away’, will be a collection of over 40 works, crafted by 16 artists, that will travel to Singapore for the community to educate, engage and stun their international audience. A variety of skills and techniques will be showcased via the 3D sculptural installations that are making Erub Arts one of the hottest commodities in the Australian art scene at the moment. Widely collected by institutional organisations, from the British Museum, London to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne this is the first opportunity to see their magical weaving and stitching in an installation setting where predominately marine life will mingle and cohabit from the ceilings of the gallery and interact with the viewing public, thereby raising awareness to the plight of the fishing net debris and the effect it has on remote communities in Australia. There will also be a couple of other surprise installations to surprise the Singaporean public as well. The exhibition begins on Wednesday 21st October and runs until Saturday 21st November 2015 and will be attended by several Erub Islanders together with Lynnette Griffiths and Diann Lui the Art Centre manager, in what will be for some of the Islanders’, their first ever trip overseas. A must-see show for anyone interested in following the recent developments in Indigenous Art and an opportunity to better understand the work being done to protect our fragile eco-system and precious marine life in this amazing remote community.

Warab Sau Ghost Nets & Twine over Steel Frame 300 x 490 x 490cm 15-87a-m
Racy Oui-Pitt says that we are all connected. We make songs and stories and now we make arts, but all of us are from Torres Strait, New Caledonia, Lifou, Loyalty Islands, we are all under one roof, under one tree. We are all Melanesian people living across the Pacific. Christianity separated us, but also bought us together. The coconut tree is the Kanake female symbol from which new life grows. Erub people often talk about the life force within the coconut and Racy repeats the words of an elder lady Lalte Jeanne Luecilla from Lifou, “Coconuts have been central to our life. Everything you need, you can get from a coconut... They are central to Pacific life force. The missionaries were in a way like floating coconuts, they grew and spread the fruits from the tree: a gift of the coconut”. Collaborative Installation by 13 Erub Artists: Alma Margaret Sailor, Ellarose Savage, Rachel Emma Gela, Ethel Charlie, Florence Gutchen, Jimmy Kenny Thaiday, Jimmy John Thaiday, Lavinia Ketchell, Lorenzo Ketchell, Nancy Louisa Kiwat, Nancy Naawi, Racy Oui-Pitt & Sarah Dawn Gela. Saam Karem Ghost Nets & Twine over Ste Steel Frame 91 x 120 x 217cm 15-111a-b
SGD7,500 (excng GT)
This Beizam (Shark) is called Saam Karem, named after a Waer way at the back of Erub. In Torres Strait custom the Beizam is a symbolic creature as it is totemic to our cultural and traditional beliefs. belie In our dances we mimic the movements of the Beizam and create songs and dance based on this animal. Creating this artwork in ghost net sends the message of awareness about the abandoned ďŹ shing nets which is destroying the marine environment and most of its inhabitants. Sea debris is a global environmental issue, we create these creatures out of the materials that are effecting and killing them. Around the Australian coast sharks are perceived as dangerous predators but the marine debris that man is creating is equally lethal. Collaborative Installation by Jimmy Kenny Thaiday & Lorenzo Ketchell. For the CV of Lorenzo Ketchell, kindly refer to the artist’s corresponding page.

Birth Date Language Place of Birth Skin/Clan
July 1961 Kulka Gau-Ya Thursday Island Samu Clan, Poruma
Florence was born on Thursday Island and grew up on the beautiful island of Poruma (Coconut Island) in the central Torres Strait, where her family originates from. She has six sisters and three brothers. Florence was engaged in 1984 and moved to Erub in 1986 where she got married in 1987. She has five children, three boys and two girls. When she was young, her favourite hobbies were crochet, bead making and sewing. Weaving was a family activity conducted mainly for celebration using coconut palm fronds. Everyone wove such things as laulaus (woven plates for food) and decorations such as fish, grasshoppers and flowers. Ever since she joined Erub Erwer Meta Arts, she learnt other art skills such as drawing, screen printing, lino printing, etching and ceramics. Her weaving now incorporates ghost nets and in 2012, her handmade ghost net woven figurative sculpture was exhibited in Musée du Montparnasse, Paris in a show called Le Point de Papunya. Florence is an aspiring artist who enjoys her artworks and looks forward to learning more new things and sharing with others in the future.

Being a Torres Strait Islander, Kathleen is grateful for the land and sea around her. It provides food for her and her family and she does what she can to protect it. She enjoys being outside on the reef mostly. One of the good things about working in the art centre is our local rangers take ghost nets from our reefs and they use it to create beautiful pieces. That way, she know their reef is safe. What she tries to express in her artwork is what is important to her. She likes to be creative in her spare time.

Ged Norr (Home Reef) Ghost Nets 300 x 110cm 15-18
“As a child, my father treated me more like a son than a daughter, teaching me in the ways of hunting and ďŹ shing, we would swim together over Ged Norr (home reef), diving for trochus and other things. The reef was like my garden or playground. I remember the colours of the different kinds of coral as I put my head under the water creating small ripples and pools. The beauty of the reef encourages me to make things that represent it, hence I want to share its beauty and my childhood memories with others. I enjoy working with ghost nets creating something as beautiful as the reef, out of the harmful waste net that threatens the fragile reef, destroying and killing animals that we depend on as food. Ghost nets are abundant in our waters as it drifts for miles to end up on our shores. I want to spread the message that the reef is for everyone to enjoy and use, for me it is our life source, this problem of the net belongs to all people.â€?

Waumer (Frigate Birds) - Pirates of the Air Ghost Nets & Twine over Steel Frame 30 Ghost Net Birds of Various Sizes 15-112
“When I watch the waumers, I can tell what the weather is going to do. When they fly high in the sky you know the weather is fine - they fly in spirals with their wings stretched out riding the thermals, hardly flapping at all. When they come over land at coconut tree height you know there is strong wind coming. I like to watch them as they glide through the air. I call them pirates of the air because they are quite lazy often stealing fish from other birds. There are three different types of frigate birds all of them fly near our island. I have tried to capture them in flight as I see them flying overhead. The frigate bird with the red under its neck is my totem.” – Jimmy John Thaiday Individual Dimension Large Birds: 85 x 47cm Small Birds: 56 x 44cm Can be sold individually or in smaller groups. Marion GAEMERS
Marion Gaemers considers herself a basket maker, continuing the traditions of women using traditional techniques and plant fibre to create her work. She mainly uses plant fibres collected from Townsville gardens but she has been influenced by our contemporary life style introduce manufactured waste materials (beach and urban flotsam) into her work. Also her baskets are not traditional shapes but are more sculptural forms. In her work, she is interested in the relationships of humans and other animals with their environment and often her baskets are modelled on things she sees in nature. As Marion mainly uses plant material, she enjoys the fact that the works will not last forever and will eventually deteriorate and be returned to the garden. Marion has been active within the art world since 1988 being involved in exhibiting her work in local and national exhibitions as well as conducting workshops for various organisations. Lynnette GRIFFITHS
Lynnette Griffiths holds qualifications in graphic design, ceramics and education from the Queensland College of Art, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Monash University. She has lived in indigenous communities for more than 20 years as a TAFE teacher, arts worker and is currently managing artistic development on Darnley Island (Erub). Lynnette plans programmes and conducts workshops with artists to develop their arts practice through research and material innovation. She has spoken extensively at national and international education and art conferences on practical and creative ways to build literacy through the arts and has co-developed a framework and pedagogy catering to indigenous learning styles. She is currently interested in methods and practices to diversify art production and engage young people within current art centre models. Lynnette strives to facilitate creative connections and learning which steps outside formal educational systems. Lynnette’s artistic practice has developed from graphic image-making, towards manipulation of materials, construction and installation. Her present work uses imagery from the marine environment as metaphor for human exploitation and environmental degradation.

Sue RYAN
Sue Ryan was born in Cairns and as a small child, she loved making art. She now lives with her partner Greg and their dog Ralph on a property near Tumoulin on the Atherton Tablelands. Sue’s interest in recording dimensions of psyche and life in general have led her to record eccentric, sometimes haunting or metaphysical, aspects of life in the deep north. Humour features extensively in her art, vacillating from dark to whimsical, within a wide range of metaphoric social and personal observations. Her love of animals and the natural world is evident in her work. Employing a wide range of mediums she delights in experimenting with new materials. A graduate of Queensland College of Art where she majored in printmaking, Sue has worked as both artist and arts worker. From 2001 to 2007 she was art centre manager in the indigenous community of Lockhart River where she worked with the artists developing their skills and promoting their artwork both nationally and internationally. In 2008, Sue was appointed to do a scoping study for Arts Queensland and the Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme (later re-branded GhostNets Australia) on the prospects of ghost nets being used as the basis for art and craft in the indigenous communities where it was being collected. Her scoping study report was a blueprint for the development of what was to become ghost net art and after handing in her report Sue was invited to take on the position of Director of the Ghost Net Art Project for GhostNets Australia. She continues to work with indigenous and non-indigenous artists to facilitate environmental community arts projects, exhibitions, workshops and cross collaboration projects.
