A Hermannsburg Christmas
The ReDot Fine Art Gallery extremely honoured to be hosting our first ever show by the community art centre of Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra, better known as Many Hands Arts, which has become famous for its production of sublime watercolours of the Australian outback in the style known as the “Hermannsburg School”. This continues the tradition of the great Arrernte artist, and possibly the most famous 20th century Australian watercolourist, Albert Namatjira. Many Hands Arts started operating in 2004 as a non-for-profit making art centre and now boasts the support of over 300 artists as it tries to provide a platform for the development of Indigenous culture from its Alice Springs headquarters. Of these artists roughly 20 are practicing the new Hermannsburg School of painting – recreating some of the icon desert renditions made famous worldwide by Albert. In a salon hang which promises to be a spectacular finale to the 2015 exhibition programme at ReDot Fine Art Gallery’s new Old Hill Street Police Station premises, ‘A Hermannsburg Christmas’, will be a collection of over 40 delicate watercolours,

crafted by nine of the more senior artists of the cooperative, all direct family descendants of the great Albert Namatjira. The exhibition begins on Wednesday 25th November and runs until Thursday 31st December 2015 and will be the perfect opportunity to find your loved ones that “special” Christmas present. Your way of saying thank you for being there to the ones you love. Hell why not treat yourself too for seeing out yet another challenging year and looking forward to a better, brighter and fun filled 2016! This is a must-see show for anyone interested in following the recent developments in Indigenous Art and an opportunity to better understand the work being produced by one of Australia’s finest community based Indigenous art projects. Marie is the daughter of Arthur and Katie (nee Uburtja) Abbott. She grew up in Hermannsburg. Her brother, the late Clem Abbott, was a highly respected watercolourist from the Hermannsburg School. In her earlier works, Marie used watercolours to paint the landscape, until her brother suggested that she should paint in her own style. From this, Marie developed a naturalistic style of landscapes using acrylic paint on canvas, eventually combining dot painting into the landscape very successfully. During the period 1993 to 1996, Marie focussed on painting birds of the region in her landscapes. Since 1996, the subject of her work has been illustrating bush foods and women gathering using symbolic designs and dot painting, although she has also begun to paint the landscapes once again. Marie painted a large mural at the Aboriginal Birthing Centre in Alice Springs. She is a registered Aboriginal Health worker and studied Aboriginal Health at Batchelor College.

1969 Arrente Alice Springs Jangala
Rienhold was born in Alice Springs. His mother and father were both from Ntaria (Hermannsburg), and thus Rienhold’s father’s dreaming and his own are Mt. Hermannsburg. As a young man, Rienhold was an ace AFL football player, but an accident resulted in a brain injury that stopped him from playing. Rienhold is married to Cathy (Jennifer) Wirri and has two daughters with her watercolour artist Kevin Wirri is his father in law. Rienhold taught himself to paint by drawing first. He loves to paint and draw his father’s country. He paints beautiful landscapes with great technique and unusual and interesting uses of colour. Hid grandparents, the Pareroultjas, taught Rienhold to paint when he was a school child, using pencils. Artist Ivy Pareroultja is like a mother to Rienhold. Rienhold was featured on the cover of Tjukurrpa Calendar (by IAD Press) this year and has created a circular landscape which is to be projected up into the cupola of a dome at the University of NSW in Sydney.

Lenie is Albert Namatjira’s granddaughter, daughter to Oscar Namatjira. After an absence from Hermannsburg to attend the mission school and complete three years of service in the Army Labor gang, Oscar returned to his family at the Hermannsburg Mission and took up painting like his father. For a period of twelve months, Oscar became Albert’s truck driver, driving Albert and his supplies to different painting locations. Oscar learnt how to paint from his father and became a skilled practitioner in his own right. Oscar raised a large family, Lenie being one of ten children. Lenie and her siblings (Euphrene, Reginald, Saleen, Wallace, Albert Jnr, Marcia, Donald, Rosabelle, Gwenda and Bessie) were all raised at Hermannsburg. Lenie paints in the tradition of her father and grandfather. Her watercolour paintings focus on the landscape west of Hermannsburg. Many of her paintings are drawn from childhood memories of her country. Lenie’s paintings are held in collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).

Gloria Pannka is a second generation Hermannsburg School watercolour artist, as her father Claude Pannka was one of the original Hermannsburg School watercolour artists. Like his contemporary Albert Namatjira, Claude developed an interest in painting when artist Rex Battarbee visited Hermannsburg in 1934. By 1950, Claude was painting full time and had become a highly sought after artist. Gloria’s father taught her to paint with watercolours when she was a young girl, and she continues to paint in the style of watercolour landscapes that typifies the Hermannsburg School tradition. Gloria uses fine detail and subtle tones to capture the West MacDonnell Ranges where she currently lives and paints. Gloria’s works have featured in a number of exhibitions throughout her career. In 2008, she was Highly Commended for her painting in the NATSIAA awards, which was then acquired by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT). Gloria has also had the honour of having her painting ‘West MacDonnell Ranges’ acquired by the Parliament House Art Collection Canberra. Her paintings are exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and in many private collections. Gloria was again Highly Commended with at the NATSIAA awards in 2014 for the collaborative Knara Nunaka Tjurretja – Our Big Country: the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Hubert has been painting watercolours since he was a young boy, thus following in the footsteps of his father Reuben Pareroultja, and uncles Otto and Edwin Pareroultja. Reuben, Otto and Edwin were part of the original Hermannsburg School watercolour movement and were all acclaimed artists. When Hubert was a kid, he watched the original Hermannsburg School watercolour artist Albert Namatjira and his father and uncles as they painted. Hubert paints many of the same locations that Namatjira and the Pareroultja brothers painted, in particular Hermannsburg, Mt. Sonder and James Range. Hubert lives and works in the Western MacDonnell Ranges to this day. His work is displayed in many important collections.

Her work uses bold colours successfully, creating emotive depictions of the Central Desert landscape. Ivy’s work is extremely popular, and has been acquired by instituitions such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).

Mervyn RUBUNTJA
Birth Date Language Place of Birth Skin/Clan
9 Feb 1958 Arrente Alice Springs Japanangka
Mervyn was born at the Telegraph Station in Alice Springs. His mother Cynthia (Kamara) Obitja was a Western Arrernte woman. His father was the late Mr Wenten Rubuntja Pengarte, a famous painter. His father was an important role model for Mervyn. He was a senior lawman and a respected member of his community. He fought for Aboriginal rights and protection of the land working alongside the Central Land Council and assisted in the Mabo agreement. Mervyn has followed in his father’s footsteps painting in the watercolour style that his father taught him. When Mervyn was 13 years old, his family moved to Hermannsburg and this is where he first saw watercolour paintings as he watched his uncles Maurice, Oscar and Keith Namatjira painting like their father Albert. Arnulf Ebatarinja another uncle kindled Mervyn’s painting talent when he gave him some watercolour paperboard and taught him to paint. Mervyn’s family moved back to Alice Springs in 1975 and he began to paint with Basil Rantji who taught him how to mix colours. In 2006, Mervyn was invited to submit a painting for the “Mornington Peninsular Works on Paper” Exhibition. He was a finalist at the 2008 NATSIA Awards in Darwin and in 2013, he was invited to participate at the seminar “Presences in the Art of Rex Battarbee and Albert Namatjira” at the State Library of New South Wales.

Hilary was born in Ragged’s Well, approximately 40 km away from Papunya. He grew up around this area, and as a child he and his siblings (including well known artist Kevin Wirri) spent much of their time watching well-known Hermannsburg School artists as they painted, particularly Keith Namatjira, Edwin Pareroultja and Joshua Ebatjarinja. Hilary was inspired to begin painting himself in the 1980s, and has become an established painter whose works are displayed in many private collections. Hilary paints at Ngurratjuta and is also an accomplished guitar player.
