Foreword The ReDot Fine Art Gallery is honoured to present, Two Stories, a major exhibition of 6 recent steel sculptures and one installation comprising 13 individual Australian Jarrah hardwood poles by renowned Australian artist, Greg Johns. Ever since he started making sculptures in 1976 Greg says he has ‘felt largely alienated from the art world.’ He says that much of what has been produced from Pop art onwards frankly bores him! Despite being viewed as an outsider, a slightly eccentric maverick of his chosen profession, this hasn’t stopped him becoming one of the most celebrated and collectable sculptural artists Australia has ever produced. His achievements read almost like a novella with pages and pages of accolades. Over 50 invitations and awards can be attributed to him since his first solo show in 1977 and the list of collections and commissions he is held within or undertaken run into the hundreds, such has been his appeal and connection with the Australian and global public. This is all the more impressive given the often super-sized mediums of his oeuvres in both steel and wood, which are not always manageable in normal spaces. His astonishing work has indeed not gone unnoticed even in the Lion city, with significant works in the Wing Tai Collection, Singapore and a major sculpture commission for REDAS, Singapore between 1993–95. Greg has refused to allow the comparative isolation of Adelaide to limit his career! According to Robert Lindsay, the former Director of McClelland Sculpture Park, much of Greg’s early work revolved around the use of simple interlocking, reciprocal geometric patterns where an apparently continuously interwoven pattern appears

to form visual conundrums. However, within his early use of repeating triangular and later semicircular shapes, which he refers to as ‘waveforms’, there is a consistent overarching interest in the interconnectedness, as he says, of ‘patterning, of symbolism and timelessness, and the unfolding of subtler and more complex systems; as well as questions of spirit, physical systems and randomness, that all exist in an integrated manner’. His interconnection extends to Indigenous culture and the Australian outback too, referenced repeatedly in his work, giving a soothing juxtaposition to his sometimes confronting works. This latest collection, which will be shown within the context of a backdrop of Indigenous hardship and conflict via David Kelly’s ‘An Unconfirmed Number’ will open challenging but hopefully rewarding dialogues for the viewer, bringing this enormous talent to the forefront of the Asian art scene exactly four decades after commencing his career. The exhibition begins on Wednesday 3rd August and runs until Sunday 28th August 2016. It will be attended in person by Greg Johns for the official opening on Wednesday 17th August 2016 at 6:30pm.

“Greg Johns prefers not to be classified simply as a contemporary sculptor, one of the many throughout the world, merely a small part of our increasingly homogenized society. Rather he wishes to make statements that reflect the fact that he is Australian, that he is an inhabitant of an extremely old continent, which the Indigenous people of Australia have inhabited for millennia. His oft chosen material, Corten steel, with its permanent rust relates superbly to the colours of the Australian inland Ken Scarlett OAM, October 2014 Australian writer specialised in Australian Sculpture

Greg JOHNS Birth Date Place of Birth

1953 Adelaide, SA, Australia

Greg Johns was born in Adelaide in 1953 where he attended the South Australian School of Art from 1975-78. Since graduating with a Diploma of Fine Arts in 1978, he has worked continuously in Adelaide for close to 40 years as a full-time sculptor, completing major commissions in Australia and internationally, as well as exhibiting annually in solo and major group shows in Australia, New York, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. At art school, key influences were sculpture lecturers such as Bert Flugelman, Max Lyle and Owen Broughton, who introduced him to the use of Corten steel, a material to which he has maintained a career-long allegiance, equating its rich self-protecting rust surface with the colours and geological ethos of the Australian outback landscape. In the decade following his graduation from art school, Johns’ main focus was on interlocking geometric patterning, initially from the triangle and square to the circle, from concentric semi-circular elements to single, vertical mandala forms, which over time evolved into increasingly articulated chain-like, quarter-circle components, linked in a fractal-like relationship. In 2001 he acquired 400 acres of land at Palmer in South Australia, to establish an independent sculpture landscape, and address environmental issues and in 2013 a major work “At The Centre [There Is Nothing]” was installed on Sydney Harbour. As a person Greg Johns is genuinely concerned about the environment and is working with like-minded individual to restore the farmland at Palmer: as an artist he is exhibiting on the world stage. He is both a committed environmentalist and a dedicated, highly successful sculptor.

SCULPTURES IN SOLID MILD STEEL

Greg JOHNS Vortex Mandala 2010 Solid Mild Steel 81 x 98 x 62cm GJ201607004_3/9

A piece which changes dramatically as you move around it, a dramatic vortex form can be seen in the centre of the sculpture. On a large scale, at least six metres high, this would be a dramatic sculpture. Edition of 9

Greg JOHNS Llaida Mandala 2006/2016 Solid Mild Steel 75 x 75 x 30cm GJ201607005_1/9

This work was influenced by the wonderful stained glass window in the cathedral at Llaida, in Spain. I have looked at many of these wonderful windows in my travels across Europe; they are rich sources of symbolism. Edition of 9

Greg JOHNS Whirling Mandala 2014 Solid Mild Steel 63 x 60 x 20cm GJ201607001_1/9

These round forms are one motif central to my work. The notion of the older highly developed perennial philosophies co–existing with developments in areas such as contemporary physics and technology interests me. Stillness and movement co– existing. The waveforms of contemporary physics and the bow forms of the slow moving rivers of the Australian landscape are both sources for the form of this sculpture. Edition of 9

Greg JOHNS At The Centre (There Is Nothing) 2012 Solid Mild Steel 63 x 63 x 48cm GJ201607002_3/15

The larger version of this piece won the McClelland Sculpture Award, the foremost sculpture prize in Australia. One of the mandala forms. The notion of the older highly developed perennial philosophies co–existing with developments in areas such as contemporary physics (waveforms used reflect waveforms of contemporary physics) interests me. Edition of 15

Greg JOHNS Fractal Figure 2004 Solid Mild Steel 130 x 25 x 20cm GJ201607006_3/9

In the late seventies I began to use these Y shapes to build sculptures, this was long before the term fractal appeared. Underlying structures that repeat in nature to create form interest me. To create figurative works which are contemporary in form is a real challenge, this is my intention here. Edition of 9

Greg JOHNS Guardian Figures 1978/79 Solid Mild Steel 36 x 60 x 20cm GJ201607003_4/15

Is one of my favourite early forms. Two figures which become one from the side view. A male and female form – the creative forces of world mythology. The waveforms of contemporary physics create the form. The old and new together, a major theme in my sculpture. Edition of 15

SCULPTURES IN AUSTRALIAN JARRAH HARDWOOD

Artist’s Insight Landing, Landlines, Songlines The Australian landscape is an extraordinary place, the open space one walks through is often relatively silent; the constant click of the computer keyboard is not to be heard. One can also escape from the constancy of task which is so much a part of the Western technological cultures. Here contemplation within a magnificent landscape is possible, but contemplation can also be challenging, you come into contact with the inner world, the inner psyche. I remember recently being on my four hundred acre property at Palmer with a curator from the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) when she expressed a sense of unease at the lack of city noise. To her the hum of the city was comforting. In the cities around the world which worship technological development the hum, the activity, is constantly present during the work day. It is no accident that the cultures of the world which evolved a developed sense of wisdom in terms of living with the environment, each other and questions of spirit did so through significant engagement with silence. The Buddhists through meditation, and the Australian Aboriginal people with the great silence and void of the interior of Australia. Traditional Aboriginal culture was in terms of living with the environment, each other and questions of spirit one of the great wisdom cultures, highly evolved over tens of thousands of years. It was critically injured by the incoming English invaders who believed in ownership, domination and extraction from a landscape, and simply did not “see or understand the complexities of a culture which had evolved to deeply understand that everything was interconnected in the environment, and as such it had to be cared for. It was clearly understood that if it was not cared for/respected all would perish. The functionality of contemporary Aboriginal culture, in terms of whether the traditional structures have sufficiently survived for the culture itself to survive draws a number of opinions. I personally believe a number of red hot burning embers, cultural hot spots have pulled through, and the camp fire will re-ignite, glowing to enlighten the recent arrivals on the critical importance of caring for place. European arrival in Australia had an enormous

impact on shaping contemporary Australia. That is undeniable. The recently arrived, incoming cultures to Australia settled along the coastal areas and have drastically modified the landscape. When one flies over it today what you see is a patchwork of paddocks – it appears as if a European quilt has been thrown over what was once bushland. For the first of the new arrivals, the English, the conditions on the coast were and still are far more palatable to European sensibilities. The incoming culture was a technological, seafaring culture, sea dreamers. They were and remain a stark contrast to the land dreaming Aboriginal culture which understood, and still understands at its core, the importance of connection to place. The new arrivals also brought their cultural values. In sculptural terms an appreciation of the wonderful classical sculpture of Greece, and of sculptors such as the extraordinary Michelangelo. Currently nearly all Australian sculptors live in this protected/safe zone, particularly in the large cities of Sydney and Melbourne. They are urban based artists. Their work comes out of the European tradition (Anthony Caro is a major influence on Sydney sculptors), or the current international style, where place is considered virtually irrelevant to sculpture making. The European tradition is one influence on my work. I am a maker who considers work in the round; I have spent time admiring the subtle three dimensional decision making of Michelangelo. Conceptually and formally Brancusi too is a significant influence on my work. The installation “Landing, Landlines, Songlines” draws on the influences of both Aboriginal and European cultural understandings. Both of these have impacted on the shaping of contemporary Australia; in terms of the physical and cultural landscape. As such I welcome them as valuable participants/contributors/determinants in Top: ‘Land Mandala’ Being Installed at Cammeray Square, Sydney, Australia, 2008 Corten Steel, 600 x 600 x 350cm Left Page: Greg Johns in the Studio, 2002 Source: © Photo Courtesy of Greg Johns

shaping my sculpture. While European paradigms clearly plays a far more significant role in shaping contemporary Australia, beneath the surface Aboriginal culture’s understanding of connection to place is a wealth/resource which no mining company can extract. To engage with this is precious. My sensibilities are far more connected with it than with European concepts of ownership, extraction and attempted control of the environment. I am an Australian sculptor whose work grows out of the European tradition of sculpture (Brancusi, Moore, Chillida etc.), but at the same time much of my work has been hybridised by the influences of the Australian landscape and Aboriginal culture. The installation “Landing, Landlines, Songlines” shows both of these influences. The sensibilities expressed, in terms of feelings of protection/spirit figures, clearly align with Aboriginal culture. The carved, eroded like forms have the Australian landscape at their heart. The figures overall have a feel which is Australian figurative, at the same time there are a few individual sculptures in the group which, in parts of the carved form, deliberately refer back to Europe (the head shape of a bishop). Both cultures, as mentioned, currently shape Australia and as such both impact on my work. This is I believe a very contemporary approach to making sculpture.
