Creancey Mornings - Aaron Kinnane Solo ReDot Fine Art Gallery is honoured to be able to showcase a new series of works by the very hip and the very happening Aaron Kinnane, one of Australia’s brightest contemporary artist. 19 works, executed during a recent overseas residency in the beautiful Burgundy region of France, in a magical castle in the idyllic town of Créancey are a testament to Aaron’s growing talent, which has seen him have sell-out shows consistently over the last few years. Those of you familiar with the gallery will know that we have steadfastly championed and focused our attention on Indigenous art for many years now. This journey, however, has recently bought us to a new crossroads.

An extremely exciting one at that, a crossroads where we have been able to carefully merge and nurture a dialogue between old and new, Indigenous and Contemporary, traditional and modern… Aaron seamlessly fits into this dialogue, adding context to complex artistic discussions. Whilst his oeuvres are stunningly pleasing on the eye, they are also deep in meaning and sub-plots – insisting attention from the viewing public to understand the world Aaron sees and paints. The residency in late 2017 to me signals a fresh turning point in Aaron’s progression as an artist. The works continue to build on the maturity of the quietly spoken and very respectful man that he is. Parisienne paints, rural canvases, cheap local wine, new friendships all seem to have influenced these works, now seemingly more bold, extra release and passion in the gestural strokes. Increased awareness and self-confidence perhaps, or maybe I am just reading more into them than I should? Who knows…? Perhaps he has found a place where the harmony envelopes the very core of his artistic practice and guides and encourages his bold strides forward, towards an inevitability of greatness. We are very proud that Aaron has chosen us here to help expand the “gospel” that is Aaron Kinnane and we are very excited too to share these striking and breath-taking works with an audience that will quickly, I believe, come to realise why Aaron is now amongst Australia’s most important and collectable young living artists. I look forward to our mutual journey forward from here.

Aaron Kinnane engages with painting in its purest form to perpetuate his effervescent vision of the natural world. Visceral layers of paint form sublime and atmospheric landscapes that are at once sullen and savage, bleak and beautiful, heavy and, desolate and wildly alive. The resulting aesthetic equilibrium spawns a purification that pushes the viewer beyond a physical and visual appreciation of the works into a metaphysical meditation. The artist gives significance to form through a palette knife, eliminating, synthesising and ultimately modelling his abstractions. A restricted palette of hand-mixed mauve, grey-green, bone, violet and black form the visual language of the works, becoming both surface and object: their sides, their corners, the weight of the paint are as much a part of the work as the image itself. Through the multitude of topographies tacitly evoked, the works incite an ambiguous mixture of reverie and nihility. Lavish layers of midnight navies, hand-mixed mauves, icy blues, arctic greys and army greens reconstruct impressions from the artist’s subconscious. The images appear as hazy recollections, revenant visions lingering in the liminal space between form and formlessness. Tempestuous, wintry folds of oil conjure stormy seas, snowy fields, rugged cliffs and grassy wilderness – atmospheric landscapes that oscillate between abstraction and representation. Bruised and scarred topographies exude feelings of isolation, yet it is a contented solitude that speaks not of despair but of hope. Aaron’s long-time love of music is embedded in his work, the artist having grown up in Newcastle with the guys from Silverchair and travelled through India with Ben Lee and Missy Higgins. His new works continue this interplay between the visual and the audible, not only literally (Aaron always paints to music), but also tropologically – his palette knife like a conductor’s baton orchestrating different tonalities, from sonorous bass through to the feathery stokes of tenor. This lyrical language leaves the viewer to speculate their own truth based not only on what they see but what they feel. For Aaron, the process of creating these paintings layer after layer was like traversing his own emotional landscape, since according to him ‘‘every emotional nuance felt during that time is now on each canvas.’’

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness... I have witnessed the rapid seasonal change from summer greens, rich red earth and blue cobalt skies to flushing gold red Autumn forests. One last boast of beauty before the country slips into a melancholic mist of grey. Romance… thick fog and thicket fences, castles perched and chateau’s abandon fill their stone walls with winter breath, whispering tales and tragedies of Bourgogne. The people are kind and accommodating… not at all the stereotype. I drink with local farmers and even the police. Lacking in French but fluid in gestures and smiles, we communicate well enough. The police have even escorted me to sites around the area for ‘inspiration’… I thank them with bottles... a bottle for this… a bottle for that. This seems to be a good exchange. The piano echo’s through the rooms and corridors of the chateau. The Grand old Lady of the misty fields.
