ENCORE, ENCORE! WestJet Encore, our regional airline, marks its fifth anniversary this month and Canadians across the country are reaping the benefits of increased competition, lower airfares, better connections and the creation of jobs in their communities. Launched June 24, 2013, WestJet Encore had its genesis in the birth of WestJet some 17 years earlier. WestJet was purpose-built to introduce more competition and lower airfares for Canadians. It was designed to change air travel forever by eliminating silly rules (like having to stay over on a Saturday night to get a lower fare) and stripping away costs to make air travel affordable to all. The Ontario provincial park system turns 125 this year, and Ontario Parks is celebrating with a series of art and music festivals, camping under the stars and plenty of guided wildlife tours—so there’s never been a better time to visit. SEEK PLAN AHEAD

ART & FESTIVALS Artists, including the Group of Seven, found their inspiration in Ontario’s parks—and so can you. ALGONQUIN (WHITNEY) Algonquin Provincial Park (1) opened in 1893 and was Ontario’s first designated park. Its glassy lakes and rivers, fiery autumn leaves and howling wolves have inspired a treasure trove of iconic Canadian art over the years. Highlight: The Algonquin Art Centre pays homage to famed artists, including painter Tom Thomson, who died mysteriously on Algonquin’s Canoe Lake in 1917.

KILLARNEY (KILLARNEY) This rugged park captivated Group of Seven masters who were inspired by Killarney’s glacier-exposed pink granite and white quartzite along the shores of Georgian Bay. Hiking

and sea kayaking are some of the park’s top pursuits. Highlight: Killarney’s 125th anniversary celebrations include a Group of Seven Festival (Aug. 18 to 19). GRUNDY LAKE (BRITT) Grundy Lake Provincial Park is a favourite among photographers thanks to a patchwork of pretty lakes, sand beaches, evergreen trees and spectacular sunsets. There are also rugged campsites located within 20 minutes (by canoe) from the park’s gateway. Highlight: On July 15, Grundy plays host to children’s musician David Archibald, who is embarking on a travelling concert series to honour the anniversary.

COMFORT CAMPING Yurts, cabins and beginner camping courses are popular at parks close to urban centres.

SIX MILE LAKE (PORT SEVERN) Located south of Muskoka, just off Highway 400, Six Mile Lake is easy to reach from Toronto. Its gentle waters are ideal for watersports and canoeing and dock space can be

reserved for power boats. Highlight: Six Mile Lake Provincial Park offers guided programs to teach novices how to camp and also teaches them to fish. RIDEAU RIVER (KEMPTVILLE) Rent canoes, kayaks and power boats from nearby marinas at this historic park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—that lies along the Rideau River (2). Its level, well-shaded campsites with nearby amenities (water taps and vault toilets) make it a popular option with families. Highlight: With Ottawa only a 40-minute drive away, Rideau River is a convenient base for exploring the nation’s capital—especially during Canada Day celebrations.

BRONTE CREEK (OAKVILLE) The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is graced with Bronte Creek, a family-friendly recreation hot spot with hiking trails, farm animals, an outdoor pool and overnight programs that teach beginners essential camping skills. Highlight: Bronte has three yurts for rent featuring bunk beds, electric heat, barbecues and decks where you can sit back and enjoy the afternoon sunshine.

BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES Birders and butterfly-lovers flock to Ontario’s southern parks year after year for rare spottings and magnificent migrations. PRESQU’ILE (BRIGHTON) Lake Ontario’s shores come alive in spring and fall when more than 300 species of birds migrate to the region. Hang out around Presqu’ile’s (3) marshy boardwalk and pristine 2.5-kilometre beach—with binoculars in hand—to catch a glimpse at some of the birds, or even migrating monarch butterflies. Highlight: Tens of thousands of swans, geese and ducks stop by each March for Waterfowl Weekend in Presqu’ile Bay. RONDEAU (MORPETH) As one of the system’s oldest parks, Rondeau has enjoyed many rounds of monarch butterfly migrations. This Lake Erie park is also home to

11 km of beaches and is a popular destination for windsurfing. Highlight: Rondeau hosts a Monarch Migration Festival each September with monarch tagging demos and guided butterfly hikes. LONG POINT (PORT ROWAN) Situated within a World Biosphere Reserve, Long Point is another lively Lake Erie spot—it’s among North America’s top destinations for birders. But it’s also known for its fishing, boating and beach-going opportunities. Highlight: The water is calm for canoeing on Long Point Bay’s sheltered marsh and bird sightings abound with numerous species migrating to the park.

WINTER WONDERS

Skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, even camping— there’s a winter full of activities in Ontario’s parks. ARROWHEAD (HUNTSVILLE) Arrowhead’s 1.3-km ice-skating trail snakes through pristine Muskoka woods, and special torch-lit skating is scheduled throughout the winter. There’s also a snowtubing hill and about 40 km of groomed crosscountry ski and snowshoe trails. Highlight: Arrowhead’s log cabins are cozy and outfitted with heaters, kitchenettes and bunk beds so they can be rented year-round. FRONTENAC (SYDENHAM) Four-season backcountry camping is Frontenac’s forté, along with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (4). Trails meander through tall pine forest and across barren granite, a signature of the exposed Canadian

Shield in this region of the province. Highlight: Frontenac’s proximity to Toronto, Kingston, Montreal and Ottawa offers accessible winter adventure to city-dwellers. SLEEPING GIANT (THUNDER BAY) Sleeping Giant on Lake Superior is known for a massive rock formation that resembles a giant snoozing on his back. efore Shane Airoll became a bespoke trouser-maker on Savile Row—a central London street famous for its tailoring of men’s clothing—he was a banking and finance lawyer. Airoll switched careers in 2008, learning the trade under master tailor Shamim Karn at the storied firm of Gieves & Hawkes. Three years later, Airoll became the head trouser-maker at Huntsman, a Savile Row institution that has been making suits for high-profile clientele—including royalty and celebrities—since 1849. Today, he is considered one of the best trouser-makers on the Row and took time to chat with us about his passion.

How did you get into the world of bespoke tailoring on Savile Row? It came about by chance—an acquaintance of mine was friends with a Savile Row tailor and I asked to meet him.

Did you go to school to learn the trade? I learned on the job and trained at Gieves & Hawkes on Savile Row. They weren’t in a position to offer me a full apprenticeship, so I worked part-time to support myself and spent all my free time learning the trade.

How does it feel to be part of a storied trade? I feel a responsibility to pass on the knowledge I have and to keep it as pure as possible. [Karn] taught me very traditional methods and I want to pass those on to the next generation of tailors.

What goes into trouser tailoring and how long does it take? There’s a lot of handwork that goes into the construction. For example, all of the internal

construction of the trousers is sewn in by hand, like the pocket bags, the hooks and bars, and buttonholes. From start to finish, it can take anywhere between 12 to 20 hours.

Is there a material you prefer to work with? I enjoy working with heavierweight cloths, like flannel. The end result comes out nicely. I always try to achieve a natural shape that compliments the customer’s unique figure.

Where do you look for inspiration? I like the [style of the] 1940s to 1960s era—the high-waisted trousers, the wide leg, the glamorous look. I find a lot of my inspiration online now—on Pinterest and Instagram.

What is the most rewarding part of being a tailor on Savile Row? Teaching apprentices is a highlight. I’ve taught students who had never worked on Savile Row before and I’m proud to see them working on [the Row] and being very successful. —Karin Olafson

The Olive grove t first glance, the sunny, southfacing, gentle slope planted with rows of short trees could be mistaken for any stone fruit orchard or vineyard on the island, but this is The Olive Farm, Canada’s first large-scale olive grove. Set in Salt Spring Island’s Fulford Valley, the farm is the passion project of George and Sheri Braun. The largest and most populated of the southern Gulf Islands between B.C.’s mainland and Vancouver Island, Salt Spring has long been known for its vigorous local food scene. The Brauns moved to the island from Kelowna after years spent searching for a piece of land with the right conditions to grow olive trees—one with the right micro-terroir; warm, with good drainage and plenty of sun exposure. In 2012, the couple trans-

planted 1,000 seedlings imported from California on seven of their 72 scenic acres. The farm quickly bore fruit—two years sooner than they expected. The olive trees bloom in June, with clusters of off-white flowers hinting at the fruit that will follow. Harvest and pressing take place in November, giving the olives ample time to soak in the sun’s rays before being hand-picked. In December 2016, the couple enlisted friends and family to help with the inaugural harvest. The first 1,000 pounds of olives were pressed into 32 litres of pure, emerald green, 100-percent Canadian olive oil—the first of its kind. “Demand has been overwhelming,” Sheri says of the oil they describe as having a wonderfully buttery, clean, fruity taste. An initial batch of

160 (200 mL) bottles were quickly snapped up by locals and chefs, one of whom raved that it reminded him of the olive oil of his childhood in Northern Italy. “We haven’t been able to keep up with demand.” Three or four years from now, the couple hope to produce 300 to 400 litres of oil in a season—around 2,000 bottles—enough to go a little further. But, this burgeoning olive oil business has seen its share of struggles. Early 2017 brought the harshest winter conditions Salt Spring had experienced in 30 years, a situation compounded in November of the same year when frost damaged much of the fruit just before harvest time. Still, the Brauns remain optimistic. “We’re undeterred!” says Sheri about the challenges

they face bringing their Canadian olive oil to market. She says all the trees survived, and, with plenty of new growth, they appear to be making a full recovery. With plenty of requests to visit the farm, the Brauns plan to introduce guided tours and are tossing around the idea of adding a small café and gift shop. But, for now, they are busy keeping up with the demand for their olive oil—in addition to the initial 1,000 trees, there are 1,500 more that are still a few years from maturity, a handful of experimental varieties growing, and plans to plant even more. In the meantime, George and Sheri grow berries and greens, squash, tomatoes, herbs, garlic and even melons, as they slowly pioneer a whole new industry. —Julie Van Rosendaal

he Negroni is beautiful in its simplicity: it’s made with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and Campari (a bitter Italian aperitif). Its origins can be traced back to Florence in the early 1900s when Camillo Negroni, an Italian count, asked the bartender at Caffe Casoni to add gin to his Americano cocktail instead of soda water—he was in the mood for a little more oomph. He liked the result. So did his fellow Florentines, who began asking for their Americanos “the Negroni way.”

The botanical notes of gin and sweetness of quality vermouth soften the Campari’s bite and help this sipper seem downright refreshing, if on the strong side. With more imbibers acquiring a passion for tastes that make them pucker, the cocktail is becoming a fashionable swill to swallow. With the surge in popularity, bartenders are starting to take liberties with the original recipe by swapping out the gin and subbing in an alternative spirit, or otherwise adding their own twist. And then there is the colour. The drink’s ruby

hue first caught Calgary cocktail aficionado Tony Migliarese’s eye growing up in an Italian family— he was drawn to the cocktail’s vermillion colour, but didn’t like its bitter flavour. Over time, the taste grew on him, and now the humble Negroni is one of his favourite drinks. “We’re gravitating toward bitter cocktails,” says Migliarese, noting the Negroni is the topselling drink where he works at Tavernetta, a casual Italian dining spot in northeast Calgary. “You challenge your palate with a Negroni.” —Lisa Kadane

was about 10 years old when I attended my first powwow. The women dancers were so beautiful, they took my breath away. As the fancy shawl dancers’ soft moccasins crushed the dry summer grass beneath their feet, a feeling of pride rose in me and I fell in love: with my people, with our incredible stories and with our resilience. For many Indigenous nations, dancing is a ceremonial responsibility, a living emblem of thanks and demonstration of national dignity. Finding the strength inside of me to dance was another story. I was in my late teens when I started powwow dancing and I felt like I was trapped in a bubble of shame and self-consciousness. Our dance classes were held in the basement of an old residential school, the Mohawk Institute in Brantford, Ont. The school my dad went to. Maybe it was the history of the building, but I wasn’t prepared for the emotional challenge powwow dancing presented to me. I wanted to dance, but my spirit was resisting. Each time I began, I would freeze. My teacher explained it to me. “It’s like we’re carrying generations of shame for our culture,” she said. “When you dance—especially for the first time—you are working through that grief. But, push through it. Dance through it.” So I did. I danced past my wounds, beyond the trauma of our collective intergenerational pain and forward to the hopes of a good future for my people. It was an empowering spiritual victory. Now, whenever I dance I know how important it is to bring my spirit along. And, how powerful it can be when people bring that energy together at the same time. This is the power of powwow.

Je dansai en oubliant les blessures, le traumatisme de notre douleur intergénérationnelle collective et en pensant à l’espoir d’un bon avenir pour mon peuple. Ce fut une victoire spirituelle qui m’aida à m’assumer. Depuis, lorsque je danse, je comprends l’importance de le faire avec l’esprit, et combien la danse est puissante lorsque tous apportent cette énergie en même temps. C’est la force du pow-wow. Men’s Grass and Women’s Jingle Some say the Men’s Grass style imitates grass swaying, symbolizing nature’s healing potential or of preparing a new village by stomping down tall prairie grasses. The Women’s Jingle dance has light footwork. It is said the dance and dress design were given in a vision to help heal a young girl.

Men’s Fancy Feather and Women’s Fancy Shawl A contemporary expression of traditional dance genres, Men’s Fancy Dance is energetic and includes flips and cartwheels. The Women’s Fancy Dance may have emerged as women wanted to dance fast like the men, with the cloth-fringed dance shawls signifying the wings of a butterfly.

There are various dancing styles, with each region and nation sharing its own origin story and description. Within each style, dancers are divided into age categories such as golden age, adult, teen, kids and tiny tots.

powwows two ways There are two kinds of powwows: Competition and Traditional-style. Competition powwows bring out some of the best dancers, drummers and singers from across the country who train year-round and invest thousands of dollars into their regalia to compete for top titles and prizes. Traditional powwows are usually smaller community celebrations with dancing, games and ceremonies—much like a family picnic, but with drumming and dancing, storytelling, and a community feast.

The nations that make up the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois people of Six Nations—Cayuga, Mohawk, Onondaga, Tuscarora, Oneida and Seneca—host the Grand River Champion of Champions Pow Wow (July 27 to 29) at Six Nations, located about an hour southwest of Toronto. Try a bowl of Haudenosaunee Corn Soup, made by simmering shelled Iroquois white corn, kidney beans and salt pork. Enjoy the soup with a slice of fried ham and a buttered scone, a fried buttermilk biscuit found on most Iroquois dinner tables. Follow up with a glass of strawberry juice, a ceremonial drink made from mashed and sweetened strawberries, and don’t leave without tasting the popular Indian Taco—a frybread topped with chili-seasoned meat, kidney beans and taco toppings. When it comes to powwow food, find the longest line and join it.

Drumming and Singing

The drum is the heart of a powwow, and the sound of the drumming is referred to as the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Every drum is handmade—usually from moose hide and cedar wood—and each has its own unique thunder or sound. Drum groups consist of men singing as they beat the drum often with women standing and singing behind them. The combination of drumming and singing creates a powerful energy and the drums resonate through the air, creating a dynamic and mighty sound. Both expressions have changed over time, yet they remain rooted in history. Within the span of a three-minute song, connections are made with ancestors, the earth, each other and the faces yet to come.

Storytelling

The powwow is a great place to learn about each host nation. Often the powwow organizers, also called the powwow committee, will invite local elders to come and share teachings. In between competitions, community elders share stories with the crowd. Sometimes, the stories tell the origins of the dance styles, or the roots of how the people came to be in that area. These stories can’t be found in books or on the Internet. Sharing oral history is an expression of welcome from the community’s elders to the guests in attendance—it always feels like a gift.

Rich in Irish culture, the Aran Islands offer a tranquil escape. This trio—where Gaelic is still spoken—is seemingly a place time forgot. But, the islands, home to about 1,200 people, are filled with fascinating archaeological remains and maintain strong traditions that lure visitors from far and wide. Here’s what you need to know about these idyllic islands.

u cinquième siècle, le moine Saint Enda fonda un monastère dans cette île solitaire et battue par l’océan. Il se disait qu’il était tellement difficile de se rendre à Inishmore que le voyage en soi serait une pénitence. C’est justement cet isolement qui préserva le mode de vie traditionnel de l’île qui, avec ses 762 habitants, est la plus peuplée de ces trois îles minuscules. On y parle le gaélique. C’est la langue que l’on entend dans la poignée de pubs et de boutiques à Kilnoran, le principal village portuaire, accessible tous les jours par un traversier pour passagers seulement. Lors d’une visite de l’île, à pied, à vélo, en minibus ou charrette tirée par un poney, vous trouverez des fermiers au visage rose travaillant dans les champs de pommes de terre aux murs de pierres, des maisons peintes en blanc, des algues séchant sur les roches, des pêcheurs ramant dans les currachs traditionnels (genre de chaloupe en bois) et des vaches dociles dans les pâturages près de ruines anciennes. Inishmore n’est pas en manque de ruines préhistoriques. Le fort massif de Dun Aengus de l’âge de bronze et de fer, situé au sommet d’une falaise de 100 m de haut, surplombe le violent Atlantique. Les amateurs de sensations fortes sont attirés par The Worm Hole, grand bassin rectangulaire naturel, creusé dans le calcaire par la force des vagues et site de la compétition de plongeon de falaises Red Bull depuis plusieurs années. Le contact avec les gens de l’île est facile. Fermez Google Search et trouvez Thomas Faherty au Seacrest B&B, où sa femme, Géraldine, sert un vrai petit-déjeuner irlandais comprenant boudin blanc, paillassons de pommes de terre et pain brun maison. Prévoyez une visite personnalisée de l’île en charrette tirée par un poney et demandez à Thomas de s’arrêter près de Kilmurvey Beach pour y voir la colonie de phoques. Pour un souper accompagné de musique, allez au Joe Watty’s Bar pour y déguster le poisson du jour, des moules et du crabe. Terminez la soirée avec du whisky à The Bar près du quai.

he monk St. Enda chose this lonely island battered by the Atlantic Ocean to establish a monastery in the 5th century. His thinking: reaching Inishmore was such a hardship in itself, the journey qualified as a form of penance. That very isolation has preserved the traditional way of life on Inishmore, which, at 762 people, is the most populous of the three tiny islands. Gaelic is widely spoken; it’s the language you’ll hear in the handful of pubs and shops in the main harbour village of Kilronan, where passenger-only ferries let off visitors daily. Tours of the island—by foot, minibus, bike or pony-and-trap—reveal ruddy-faced farmers tending rock-enclosed potato fields, white-painted cottages, foraged seaweed drying on rocks, fishermen rowing their TK TK TK traditional currachs (a type of wooden boat) in the ocean, and docile cows grazing in pastures next to ancient ruins. Prehistoric sites are plentiful on Inishmore. Chief among them is the massive, Bronze and Iron Age fort of Dun Aengus, which sits at the very top of a 100-metre cliff, looking down on the thrashing Atlantic Ocean. Thrill-seekers are drawn to The Worm Hole; this large, naturally formed rectangular pool, carved out of the limestone by the fury of the pounding waves, has been the site of the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition for several years. Connecting with islanders is easy. Turn off Google Search and track down Thomas Faherty at the Seacrest B&B, where his wife, Geraldine, serves a proper Irish breakfast of white pudding, hash browns and homemade brown bread, and settle in for a personalized pony-and-trap tour of the island—ask Faherty to stop near Kilmurvey Beach to visit the resident seal colony. For supper and live music, head to Joe Watty’s Bar for locally caught fish, mussels and crab. End the evening with an Irish whiskey at The Bar down by the pier in Kilronan.

C’est le cas de Caomhán, ou Kevin, le saint patron d’Inisheer, qui serait arrivé sur l’île au relief karstique de calcaire exposé aux intempéries avec de nombreux trous et petites grottes, au sixième siècle. Teampall Chaomhán, ruine de l’église médiévale du même nom, fut construite en dessous du niveau du sol, et on doit y déblayer régulièrement le sable qui risque de bloquer l’entrée. On trouve d’autres personnages intéressants parmi les quelque 280 habitants qui se partagent six noms de famille. Le clan Flaherty dirige Óstán Inis Oírr, l’hôtel principal depuis presque 40 ans. La famille O’Conghaile exploite High Ruairí (Rory’s) sur la route Baile An Lurgain. Rory O’Conghaile, l’homonyme du pub, est l’un de ceux qui secoururent les marins (ensuite la cargaison) du Plassey, navire qui s’échoua en 1960. On dit que c’est à ce moment-là que la première toilette moderne arriva à Inisheer. L’épave rouillée du chalutier à vapeur est devenue de nos jours un site touristique à l’extrémité est de l’île. La meilleure façon de découvrir cet îlot d’à peine cinq kilomètres carrés est à pied. Consacrez un avant ou après-midi au sentier pédestre Inis Oírr de 10,5 km pour en voir les attraits principaux. Il commence au Cnoc Raithni, tumulus de l’âge de bronze, et continue par le fort Dún Formna de l’âge de fer et les ruines du château O’Brien du 14e siècle, un tombeau de l’âge de bronze et le puits sacré de Tobar Éinne (dédié à Saint Enda).

aomhán, also known as Kevin, is the patron saint of Inisheer and reportedly arrived on the island—a landscape of weathered limestone with plenty of sink holes and small caves—in the 6th century. Teampall Chaomhán, the medieval church ruin that bears his name, is halfunderground, requiring caretakers to regularly clear away the beach sand that threatens to bury the entrance. Memorable characters can also be found among today’s 280 or so islanders who share six family names between them. The Flaherty clan has been running the main hotel, Óstán Inis Oírr, for almost 40 years. The O’Conghaile family operates High Ruairí (Rory’s) on Baile An Lurgain road. The pub’s namesake, Rory O’Conghaile, was among those who rescued sailors (and later the cargo) from the shipwrecked Plassey in 1960—it’s rumoured this is how the first modern toilet appeared on Inisheer. The rusty hulk of the steam trawler is now a tourist site on the most easterly point of the island. The best way to discover tiny Inisheer—it’s only about five square kilometres—is by foot. Devote a morning or afternoon to the Inis Oírr Walk Way Trail. It starts at the Bronze Age burial mound of Cnoc Raithní before continuing to the Iron Age fort of Dún Formna, the ruins of the 14th-century O’Brien’s Castle and the holy well of Tobar Éinne (dedicated to Inishmore’s St. Enda).

INISHMaan rish playwright John Millington Synge was seduced by the landscape of Inishmaan in the late 1800s: a jagged coastline of cliffs and sandy beaches, rolling hills and farmers’ fields crisscrossed with a latticework of stone walls. Oh, and the blessed quiet. His restored cottage, Teach Synge, is located in the middle of the island and there’s also a stone structure atop the limestone cliffs called Cathaoir Synge (Synge’s Chair), where the writer would while away the hours. Today, Inishmaan (population: 183) is a one-pub island and the least-visited of the Arans. The five-room Inis Meáin Restaurant & Suites, an award-winning retreat house and restaurant, was opened in 2007. Down the road is the Inis Meáin Knitting Company, where locals make (and sell) hand-crafted knitwear. The handful of ruins on Inishmaan include a clochán (a beehiveshaped stone building from the early Christian period) and vestiges of the 8th-century Cill Cheannannach church. A pair of Iron Age ring forts, Dún Conchúir and Dún Fearbhaigh, can be visited while walking the 13-kilometre Lúb Dún Fearbhaí trail—just follow the white and purple arrows. Rough weather is the optimal time to witness the Puffing Holes along the clifftops; the force of the ocean sends seaspray bursting up through tunnel-like channels in the cliffs.

Designed and built by Gustave Eiffel for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 (World’s Fair), it is one of the most-visited monuments in the world. By day, the tower (hand-painted every seven years by a team of 25) draws crowds to its lawns and three levels; by night, more than 20,000 lights create a truly magical sight— especially viewed from the Arc de Triomphe.

For visitors who think “let them eat cake” is a tribute to Paris’ superb bakeries, Versailles is the place to learn about a particularly gilded age in France’s history. Take a stroll back to the 17th and 18th centuries with marvellous sculpted gardens, unbelievably ornate interiors (chandeliers galore!), and all the trappings of privilege enjoyed by kings and queens—including extravagant Queen Marie-Antoinette, who allegedly uttered that famous quote about eating cake.

Visitors can wander in the park-like environment and leave a small bouquet of tulips at the shrine of a beloved hero of yesteryear.

Designed by a trio of architects, this contemporary art museum has a distinctive façade covered in colourful pipes and external escalators. The permanent collection focuses on 20th- and 21st-century art, including works by Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol and Wassily Kandinsky. The Pompidou has a massive public library and a chic restaurant, Georges, with terrific views over the nearby rooftops.

Housed in the magnificent 17thcentury Hôtel Salé, this museum is dedicated to the works of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. The museum reopened in 2014 following a renovation which doubled the size of the exhibition space. View sketches, studies, engravings, photos and sculptures—as well as works Picasso collected by artists such as Paul Cézanne and Joan Miró.

MUSÉE DU LOUVRE The Louvre’s massive collection includes work from Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations, and is famous for masterpieces you’ll recall from textbooks, like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. A former royal palace, the Louvre has been through many modifications in its 800-year history.

European contact. As interest in Indigenous culture grows, so, too, do the number of experiences available. “Our tourism experiences are landscapes and stories,” explains Quinton Crow Shoe with Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO

World Heritage Site in Southern Alberta. From the annual Kamloopa Pow Wow in British Columbia to the Indigenous Arts Festival at Fort York National Historic Site in Toronto, check out these summertime Indigenous experiences across the country.

Secwepemc Museum and Kamloopa Pow Wow Kamloops is home to the Secwepemc Nation, a collection of 17 bands that settled along the region’s rivers and lakes during the winter, and lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle during the summer prior to European settlement. There are a number of ways to learn about and experience Indigenous culture here. Start with a visit to the fascinating Secwepemc Museum, where displays convey the importance of storytelling—especially around the fire during winter—as a means of teaching oral history. Then, set foot inside a 2,000-year-old winter village where the nation’s stories were passed down. “For us, it’s a sacred place. It’s very special,” says cultural educator Sabrina Thomas. Plan your visit for early August to coincide with the Kamloopa Pow Wow, running this year from August 3 to 5. Watch the Secwepemc Nation’s stories and legends come to life through song and dance when

more than 1,000 dancers dressed in traditional regalia—face paint, ceremonial headdresses, elaborate beadwork, animal skins and even antlers and skulls—literally make the ground shake in time to the beat of drums.

Piskun, The Buffalo Jump Take part in a smudging ceremony with a Blackfoot elder inside a tipi to cleanse your

spirit, body and mind. Then, don a wolf or buffalo skin to reenact a buffalo hunt at HeadSmashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where First Nations hunted bison for millennia by driving them over a cliff. Both the smudging ceremony and hunting reenactment are part of the three-hour Piskun, The Buffalo Jump tour, an immersive experience that takes place Mondays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. during July and August.

There, inside a trapper’s tent, you’ll learn about the spiritual, cultural and commercial life of the Métis families who settled the land along the river and worked as guides, interpreters, canoe men and fur packers. You’ll then board a canoe and paddle downriver to Victoria Settlement, the site of a Methodist mission and the Hudson Bay Company’s Fort Victoria, established in 1864 as a fur trade base. You’ll carry a trapper’s pack using a traditional leather forehead strap, learn how to set a beaver trap, and be rewarded for your efforts with homemade licorice and tea. A member of the Blackfoot Nation leads the tour from the tipi to the edge of a sandstone escarpment, all the while narrating the hunt and its importance to the tribe, which used every part of the buffalo, including the hide, bones and meat. Complete the trip back in time by throwing an atlatl—a traditional spear—at a fur-covered target shaped like a buffalo. Written by Indigenous playwright Josh Languedoc, the play is about a young boy trying to write a great story with a little help from his 103-year-old grandfather. Languedoc workshopped the play while attending The Banff Centre’s Indigenous Team Storytellers and Spoken Word Residency.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park As you eat fresh-baked bannock (traditional flat bread) and sip muskeg tea around a campfire on the open prairie near Saskatoon, gaze up

at the night sky and try to count the millions of stars visible where there’s virtually no light pollution. This is just one moment sure to stick with you after sleeping overnight in a tipi on the grounds at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a gathering place where First Nations hunted bison and collected plants and herbs dating back some 6,000 years. You can learn more about the site’s history during a daily Archeological Dig Site Tour where you’ll see pottery fragments, animal bones, tipi rings, and a 4,200-year-old stone oxbow bi-face knife, all of which were uncovered on-site at Canada’s longest-running dig. Or, join a guided Medicine Walk to learn how everyday plants were used for practical or medical purposes—cattail fluff became an absorbent, biodegradable diaper, while powder found on the bark of poplar trees was rubbed onto the skin as a sunscreen. Indigenous Arts Festival Stare in awe at Rhonda Doxtator as she takes to the stage in a blur of hoops and elaborate moves during the Indigenous Arts Festival, which runs from June 21 to 24 at Fort York National Historic Site in downtown Toronto. The famous hoop dancer is just one of many impressive performers who will be featured during the four-day celebration of traditional and contemporary Indigenous dance, music, storytelling, crafts and food. The free festival kicks off with Education Days on June 21 and 22, when school groups and the general public are welcome to come learn about oral storytelling and the history of drumming, or participate in a hoop-dancing workshop. On June 23, join the crowds to watch Na-Me-Res Toronto’s Annual Traditional Pow Wow, which is one of very few urban pow wows. You won’t want to miss the grand entry, when dancers in regalia and flag bearers representing different First Nations tribes enter the circle to the beat of drums. In between performances, shop for beaded jewelry, silver, bone and quill necklaces, leatherwork and traditional clothing. Afterward, join a feast where everyone comes together over simple staples such as stew, wild rice and salad. The festival wraps up June 24 with a day of concerts featuring artists who are modernizing traditional sounds. Despite our very best efforts, travelling can be challenging at times (long lines, delays, etc.).
