A
cclaimed author Andrew Harvey first went to Ladakh on a trip that changed his vision of life and the direction of his work in 1980. Ladakh – a gorgeous and stark world of mountains, valleys and monasteries, and one of the last places where the ancient world of Tibetan Buddhism could be seen in all its peace and spiritual glory had just been opened to travellers. Andrew was one of the very first to enter it. At the centre of this world, in a half ruined shrine room in the now famous She monastery he met His Eminence Thuksey Rinpoche, then in his late 60s, a living Buddhist Master revered by the Tibetan diaspora and an important teacher of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. In Thuksey Rinpoche he met a Buddhist teacher whose presence

His Eminence Thuksey Rinpoche died in 1983, shortly after Andrew Harvey’s meeting with him. Andrew continued his work to further the Buddhist
message of Compassion and a life dedicated to service. Then in 2014 he went back to Ladakh, this time for a meeting of a different kind. His Eminence, he was told had not only reincarnated again but agreed to meet Andrew once more. In his young face, Andrew saw the old Rinpoche in an amazing reunion that brought tears to his eyes. When he met Rinpoche they agreed to make a film together about Buddhist values in Ladakh that would transform Buddhist practice so it can be applied and rooted in practical, compassionate action. FILM SYNOPSIS This is the story of author Andrew Harvey’s return to Ladakh to meet the reincarnation of the revered Buddhist Master, His Eminence Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche who was his teacher in his last life and who is now 29, living again and in charge of the state of Ladakh – which he governs courageously using Buddhist principles. Approaching Ladakh is a major journey. At 10,000ft elevation it is akin to entering the timeless, magical world of a lost horizon. Within its gorgeous landscapes one enters the last place on earth where the ancient world of Tibetan Buddhism still exists in all its magnificence – untouched for nearly 2,000 years. This film will celebrate the spectacular physical and spiritual glory of one of the last still-intact sacred Tibetan places on earth. It will give audiences a sense of the importance of human life and what you do with it. This message is at the core of Thuksey Rinpoche’s teaching. The film will offer a rare and unprecedented glimpse into the treasures and secrets of the Buddhist world and culture, exploring the meaning of success and happiness within a paradigm that exists in dramatic contrast to the cult of celebrity and the modern day consumerism of the western world. The last time Andrew met with the Rinpoche he banged his hands on the table and said, “In my last life you were my spiritual son and now in this life, you must be my spiritual father.” Quite a responsibility. Andrew has pledged to do whatever he can in the name of all he received throughout his life from meeting with Thuksey Rinpoche in Ladakh and to support the new young Rinpoche’s vision and pioneering work and to share it with the world. FILM SYNOPSIS Using the latest digital photography and some of the best professional film crew in the world the film will depict the radiant beauty of Ladakh and what Buddhism can do for the world, responding from within its deepest core. The Rinpoche, with Andrew’s explanations will begin to help redefine the role of Buddhism in today’s worldwide ecological and spiritual crisis. In a carefully crafted section the young Rinpoche will guide the film into moments of sublime stillness and teachings as we receive his instructions in Buddhist meditation practices and the profound Tibetan Tonglen “giving and receiving compassion ritual” that can be performed by anyone and can contribute to a more peaceful world. With this deep access into Buddhism and sacred activism the film will also offer specific insights into Tibetan Buddhist culture for teachers and children around the world to use in their daily lives – showing examples from the Rinpoche’s own vision of active compassion being applied in pioneering school and animal welfare projects… all whilst preserving the ancient nature of Ladakh as a gift for the future. Because it lies in a politically sensitive area foreigners were forbidden to visit there until 1974. The documentary film RETURN TO LADAKH will follow Andrew Harvey, the author, religious scholar and teacher of mystic traditions, as he returns to the place that inspired his life-long mission of Sacred Activism. The film will capture the reunion with Andrew and the reincarnation of his spiritual teacher, Kyabje Thouksey Rinpoche, in the very same Monastery Andrew began his spiritual transformation over 30 years ago, a transformation that Harvey documented beautifully in his first book, Journey In Ladakh. This reunion will not only be a moving portrayal of enduring friendship, and the relationship between student and Teacher. It will also bring to the forefront a discussion of one of the most important cornerstones of the Buddhist religion, Reincarnation. A religious belief that puzzles many non-believers is central to the faith of millions of Buddhist followers. The film will explore reincarnation with a very open and non-biased lens, with the hope that through the time we spend with Andrew and the Rinpoche further understanding of this religious foundation will be revealed. The area of Ladakh India is one of the last regions of true Tibetan Buddhism in the world, a land of extreme devotion and rugged landscapes. Set in a desert plateau at over 10,000ft and surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, the film will also highlight the beauty of Ladakh itself an area that many refer to as Shangri-La. Through interviews, archival footage, and beautiful cinematography we will explore how Andrew Harvey has become a pioneer in Sacred Activism, his dedication to the betterment of humanity, and how this work was inspired by a great Buddhist teacher many years ago, who has returned in a new body to continue the work of his previous life.

ean-Paul a graduate of the National Film & Television School, UK. Since graduating from the NFTS he’s been producing new feature film, television and live event projects that seek to explore the wonders of the natural world, ancient perspectives and cultural traditions.
ndrew Harvey is an author, religious scholar and teacher of mystic traditions, known for his popular nonfiction books on spiritual or mystical themes, beginning with his 1983 A Journey in Ladakh. He is Founder Director of the Institute of Sacred Activism, an international organisation that invites concerned people to take up the challenge of our contemporary global crises by becoming inspired and engaged agents of change.

He’s worked with retired BBC Director Alan Ereira since the beginning of the ALUNA film, made with the secretive Indigenous Kogi Indians in Colombia. In 2016 he worked with the United Nations on the “Harmony with Nature” program that aims to align human activity with nature. The white paper produced by over 127 experts in diverse fields of environmental law, ecological economics, education, holistic science, humanities, philosophy/ethics, the arts, media, design and architecture, theology & spirituality became the keynote address in the September 2016 UN General Assembly and helped encourage the city of Mexico to adopt the Rights of Nature in their constitution in January 2017. Jean-Paul also produced the Migrate Charity Auction for Refugees with Christies (London) in October 2016 as a creative response to the Refugee Crisis. In 2016 he worked with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Grammy Nominated Gyuto Monks during their UK & Scotland “Pure Sound Tour”. This included their performances at the opening ceremony of Glastonbury Festival in front of an audience of around 100,000 people and recording the historic visit on film. He was also a lead venue project manager during the successful London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games in London.

Sacred activism is a form of compassion-in-action that is born of a fusion of deep spiritual passion with wise radical action in the world. He works to encourage the large-scale practice of Sacred Activism, which he feels can become an essential force for preserving and healing the planet and its inhabitants. Andrew Harvey has taught at Oxford and Cornell University’s well as at various colleges and spiritual centers throughout the world. He has written over 30 books including ‘Dialogues with a Modern Mystic’, ‘Hidden Journey’, ‘The Return of the Mother’, ‘Radical Passion’, ‘The Celebration of Rumi’ and ‘Journey In Ladakh’.

G
regor’s passion for Cinematography started while working as a PA on Searching For Bobby Fischer. He was so inspired by Conrad Hall’s work that he decided to pursue cinematography as a career. He jumped into the lighting department at his next opportunity to learn from some of the best DPs in Toronto. Since 2000 Gregor has been working full-time as a DP. Recent TV credits include: Sunnyside (City/Rogers), Beauty and the Beast Season 1 (CW), The Yard (HBO Canada) and Pure Pwnage (Showcase). Recent Features include The Bequest (Jeff Kopas), Go Jump In The Pool (Vivieno Caldinelli) and The Dark Stranger (Chris Trebilcock). Gregor has won 2 Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards for the docudrama Close Encounters and the short film Artist: Unknown. He’s also had 5 other CSC award nominations, amongst other cinematography awards.
ROBIN CRUMLEY
R
obin Crumley has recently wrapped production on his directorial debut Mystery of the White Lions, a feature documentary filmed in Timabavati, South Africa. The film focuses on the mythology and conservation of one of the most rare animals on the planet, the White Lion. He has also just completed a TV documentary entitled Rhythmic Roots, which was filmed in India and Israel about the accomplished Israeli musician Yossi Fine. Feature Producing credits include After The Ball starring Lauren Holly and Chris Noth, and The Entitled starring Ray Liotta and Kevin Zegers. Most notably he was the lead producer on the rock’n’roll vampire film Suck starring Malcolm McDowell, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, Moby, and Jessica Paré written and directed by Rob Stefaniuk. Documentary and short film credits include the feature length documentaries: Marion Woodman: Dancing in the Flames, based on the life of Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, and Global Groove Network, which examines the history and culture of EDM (Electronic Dance Music). He Produced the Genie nominated short film, The Answer Key, and the acclaimed web-series for Sphinx Productions and Apple Canada This Week On Movies, hosted by acclaimed film critic Richard Crouse. In 2016 he completed two short films with director Joe Kicak, Must Kill Karl and Frigid, for Bravo, and the Canada Arts Council. Before Producing and Directing, Crumley worked up through the ranks from prep through post in a variety of positions within film production. He spent 5 years with Urban Post Production to hone his understanding of the complex world of post- production, and has acted as Post Supervisor on two feature films, After The Ball and The Entitled. Throughout his career he has had the privilege to work with such directors as David Cronenberg, Clive Barker, Norman Jewison, Deepa Mehta, Vincenzo Natali, David Gordon Green, and Terry Gilliam.
