Sara Slade, Senior Interior Designer at Clement Joscelyne, reveals the must-have look for the summer months
W
ith the first signs of the warmer months finally arriving, I have certainly been walking with more of a spring in my step. I am absolutely loving the sunshine, albeit still needing to wear my huge padded winter coat outside. With the promise of summer just around the corner, the lighter evenings are putting me in a brighter mood that has inspired my latest love...

Spring is most definitely in the air...
As everybody has been doing wallpapered ‘feature walls’, why not try something more creative? Search through your local antique and charity shops to find different plates in blues and whites, and group them above your sofa or bed to create an interesting focal point. Take care not to be too regimented with how you hang them; just make sure they aren’t too far apart from each other. I know this can all sound a bit of a traditional way to dress your room, but if you mix this with some funkier furniture, such as the Kartell ‘Eros’ Swivel chair by Philippe Starck, or the Content by Conran ‘Wave’ chest, you
With so many different hues, from the softest Delft blues to the more striking cobalt tones, there will most definitely be one that will fit your home perfectly. When I think of the first waves of summer, I think of crisp white linens and vibrant azure blues. With so many different hues, from the softest Delft blues to the more striking cobalt tones, there will most definitely be one that will fit your home perfectly. The easiest way to achieve this light and airy look is to adopt a fairly neutral background with your flooring, walls and furniture, before adding hints of blue, so as not to make it feel too heavy. By making cushions with small amounts of fabric in checks, stripes and even florals, you can achieve this look in a more cost effective way, but still achieve maximum impact. Try not to be too pedantic about making sure the blues all match, as it should look effortless and comfortable rather than formal and tailored. VELVET
can create a much more eclectic mix and sharpen up the look no end! I always find a rug completes the look of a room. If you’re finding it difficult to make a room feel warm, visit the wonderful world of OKA (www.okadirect.com) who have some amazing designs, including their fabulous Masai dhurrie rug in blue and cream (and at £269, it won’t break the bank!) Or, if you’re anything like me, I always prefer to go for the complete knockout option. Create a real talking point amongst your friends with the Fired Earth Encaustic tiles at £8.50 each (www.firedearth.com). Make sure you catch me next month as I head to London Design Week to check out the new collections! 83

Sara Slade, Senior Interior Designer at Clement Joscelyne, looks at the latest designs coming out of this year’s Milan Furniture Fair

Foliage Sofa by Patricia Urquiola for Kartell

ith the beautiful weather we’ve been having here, why would anybody think of going abroad? Well… plenty of designers who attended the Milan Furniture Fair this spring would certainly disagree even after the previous year’s dramas with an ash cloud preventing us all from coming home. There has been a clear sign of change, with contemporary furniture designs featuring at all of this year’s fairs, especially in Milan. Gone are the straight lines and simple shapes we’ve all grown to know and love, giving way to curves and textures. A designer who is seemingly flooding the market with her designs is Patricia Urquiola. This Spanish architect, who’s based in Milan, is really making waves, with Kartell, Moroso and Cassina taking on her woven and quilted designs. These weird, yet amazingly wonderful, designs can make such a great contrast against the simpler designs that most of my clients like to use.I’m sure we will start to see this trend emerging on the high street in the next six months. If you want your own slice of this look without spending thousands, try Surface View who have ready to roll wallpaper murals by Chae Young Kim. These three dimensional knitted designs will completely transform a room and, as they’re monochrome, will work perfectly with any colour. A thriftier way to bring this look into your life is to take up knitting... no, seriously! My very crafty colleague Lucie told me about a blog named Pickles, where you can buy jumbo wools to make an amazing chunky knit pouf, which they name Puff Daddy – it even

gives you full instructions on how to make it! One of the most anticipated debuts in Milan was the iconic fashion house Hermes, showing its collection of beautifully crafted furniture. With superb attention to detail (as you would expect), and the finest materials from bull calf leather and exquisite geometric marquetry,it’s fair to say you won’t see this furniture everywhere.Yet it’s great to see these sophisticated fashion houses stretching into the interiors market without cutting any corners. Another fashion house making waves within the industry is the British company Mulberry Home. Their new wallpaper book has everything from paisleys and stripes to florals, and presents the perfect way to create a typical English home, but the paper I’m particularly lusting over is their ‘Flying Ducks’ wallpaper. This design was originally hand blocked onto linen, but has now been translated onto a paper and re-coloured, giving it more of a contemporary edge. I’ll definitely be using this paper in the blue colourway and setting strong coral reds against it to make a bigger statement. Considering that it dates back to 1928 when it was purchased for 15 guineas, you can really appreciate the timeless quality of this classic design. I think it’s fair to say we’re very lucky that new designers are keen to challenge our expectations when it comes to home design – it certainly makes life more exciting! UNTIL NEXT TIME… SARA VELVET

The Future Is Bright… At Last ARTICLE BY Sara Slade
hese past 12 months have seen many of the design houses presenting their most commercial collections in a long time. Although this gave them wider appeal, at times, unfortunately,it also meant that a lot of what we saw was quite 'safe'. With little to no colour as well as a lack of experimentation, interior designers were begging for more inspirational pieces that they could ‘wow’ their clients with.Well,I can safely say that London Design Week certainly delivered. Walking around Chelsea, it was clear to see spring was in full flow, and the kaleidoscope of colours from all of my favourite companies was enough to make me re-think schemes that I was putting together for my own clients. The fairly young company Zinc (www.zinctextile.com) normally known for their muted tones and textures stopped everyone in their tracks by bringing out their Miami collection last month. This collection is bursting with vibrant colours in velvets and silks, creating a true carnival vibe. I particularly loved their velvet designs with a zig-zag of colours which I could find a number of places to use. One of the nicest aspects of going to the Design Week is seeing some of the grander companies like French weavers Lelievre (www.lelievre.eu) giving others a run for their money. Not only did they launch Sonia Rykiel's first home collection last year, but they are also pushing their way forward with colour and design. Their new Signature collection blends their usual high quality cloth with geometric patterns and incredible colours. The design has an almost luminous quality and although it features mainly geometric designs, it still manages to look soft. A company I had not discovered before my

visit to Chelsea Harbour last September, was Ann Sacks (www.annsacks.com). I’m not sure how,as its showroom is probably one of the biggest there. It has the most jawdropping selection of tiles I have ever seen, from Persian ceramic patterns to leather and wooden tiles; even their bathroom accessories are exceptional. One of my greatest finds, in the Osborne & Little showroom on the King’s Road, were some pieces by emerging young designer Zoe Murphy. There has been a lot of talk amongst those in the know that with her upcycling of mid-century furniture which she has the ability to put her own stamp on,she’s the one to watch over the coming years. clear to see Peter Osborne can still hunt out the best. His decision to commission her to make some pieces to work with the new collections in the showroom, shows how the two companies blend seamlessly together. There’s so much to now get excited about that I think you’ll all agree with me that things are certainly starting to look a lot brighter! See you next month!
