Jesus Says Hunger and Thirst

I know I skipped 'meek' but that was discussed in April. I have no money again. I go through the same bleak period at the end of every month and I am seriously burdened by it. Somehow, for years now, God has seen me through time and time again. Yet as month-end approaches I am apprehensive. I send out the invoices but am never sure who is going to pay on time. Some customers promise payments and then months go past before they make it happen. So this period is always a bit of a lottery for me. Checking my account every day to see whether I have won. Talk about a lack of faith. Its Monday the 3rd and my customers have paid. One day I will learn. Strangely our sermon on Sunday covered todays topic and so I will pinch a few of the concepts that Justin so excellently shared with us. When we are hungry (not having eaten for a while), we have a hunger for food. The more hungry we get the more we will accept almost anything as nourishment. Hunger is a strange animal. If you ignore it long enough, by decision or by circumstance, it starts fading. There will always be a nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach but the ravaging growl on the second day (my worst day) of a fast, is absent. The same goes for God's Word. If we tone down our daily Bible Study (by decision or circumstance), a stage will be reached where we have a nagging feeling we should do something but the desire is gone and we end up satisfying the little hunger we have with a token reading or two. We use our circumstances as an excuse. We replace spirituality with busyness. When you don't feed the soul it will stop being hungry. I have loved motorbikes all my life. I had a few when I was younger. I fell off them regularly. I tried to replace a patch of skin on my knee with a piece of jeans material but discovered skin works much better. My last one was stolen in 1985 when a prospective buyer went for an infinitely long test drive and never returned. Welcome to Johannesburg. Then the children started growing up and the needs were different for a decade or two but my desire never waned. There was always a hunger and I salivated whenever we passed a fine two wheeled specimen. Eventually desire overcame reason and we bought a secondhand BMW RT 1150. At last the itch was scratched. The point however is that our hunger to grow in Christ needs to have the same unquenchable fire within our hearts. David will always be an example for the rest of us in this regard. He could describe things in ways that leave the rest of us breathless. Breathe the following oxygen giving words: PS 42:2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. PS 63:1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you... PS 119:20 My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times. PS 119:81 My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word.

PS 143:6 I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. David understood where we all need to be when it comes to getting to know God. Any other attitude leads to starvation and a lessening of our need. God will never force us to love Him. He does however teach us by example. Look up Bartimaeus in Mar 10:46, he was hungry. He did not let circumstances or his position in life stop him. Get hungry, stay hungry.
