An Earthworm farm is a farm that breeds earthworms and they are very easy to make. But why would you want to create an earthworm farm? Most of these farms are done by professional earthworm breeders. They breed, and sell earthworms to fishing stores, and fisherman. In some rare cases, earthworms can be sold to food processing companies, typically in the organic food industry. Most of those types of breeders do so on a major scale, which does not take too much room. You don't need a factory or major plant to produce and breed large amounts of earthworms, but there certainly are secrets to breeding them on such a massive scale. Earthworm and their farms are also used by schools, and children for education and fun. I remember having an earthworm farm as a kid, and from what I recall, seeing those earthworms move around in the soil, through the glass, was very "cool", then again, as a 6 year old boy who liked dirt, why would that not be the coolest thing around? Earthworms have also been called a Farmers Best Friend! The reason is because they are naturally aerate dirt, and also their waste is food for nutrients in the soil for plants and whatever crops the farmer is growing. If you have never had the opportunity to see a earthworm farm, I have to admit, they are really super ugly. Seeing brown things crawling around in the dirt is not really that appealing to the eye, but they are really good for the eco-system we live in. What an Earth Worm Farm is not, is a farm to create vermicomposting. You need a certain worms for that process, and the worm you should use is called the Red Wiggler. Some people call this a type of earthworm, like night crawlers would be for fishing, but the red wiggler is prime for compost because they feed from the top of the soil. You would have to purchase and then make a Worm Farm to create the final product: compost. These worms eat kitchen scraps, and vermicomposting becomes a science to the experienced worm farmer. I mentioned this to show the difference between various types of earthworm farms. So the bottom line is, when asked what an earthworm and what is the farm for, well the answer is depends. It depends on what your goals are and what type of earthworm (there are over 4000 worms types) you are wanting to farm. The Night Crawler is a great worm for fishing, and very easy to breed (there are secrets too doing that) and then there is the Red wiggler, or Tiger Worm (and other names) for creating a very nutrient filled soil.
