NSW MINERALS COUNCIL LETTER OF ENDORSEMENT The NSW Minerals Council is pleased to support the 2014 New South Wales Mining & Engineering Exhibition in Newcastle. Mining is a big part of the Hunter, thriving for more than 200 years alongside other important industries in the region and providing jobs and prosperity for the thousands of people living in the region’s mining communities. The scale of the contribution being made by our NSW Miners shouldn’t be underestimated. Coal accounts for around 35% of all merchandise exports, much of that through the Port of Newcastle, where exports are up by 11 percent, making coal the state’s most valuable export. The NSW Government receives around $1.3 billion a year in mining royalties, enough to fund 11,000 teachers in our schools every year. Mining is also integral to the local community, contributing to around 35% of the Hunter’s economic activity. Last year our mines spent $4.6 billion with more than 4,800 local businesses, an investment that is good for local jobs and well worth celebrating. With so many people being part of the local mining sector, the 2014 New South Wales Mining & Engineering Exhibition is a great opportunity to network, share ideas and recognise the hard working men and women of the Hunter’s mining communities who are our most important asset.
